My computer had a problem when it would turn on and turn off randomly, or it would start and shut off automatically. I took it to the repair shop and told me it could be power supply. They had the power supply changed and now every time it turns on I get a "Press a Key to Reboot", and even when I press a key it would still go back to that message. They told me the solution would be to reformat the computer, but important files and programs are on there and there is no back up so I can't have it formatted. Anyone has any solution to this? The computer was fine before, it just wouldn't start up sometimes but when it does it runs smoothly
Format the partition you are going to use for the install.Restart your computer.Go into the BIOS Change your boot order and Make the CD-ROM your boot drive.Insert the CD and restart the Personal Computer. When prompted, Press Any key to boot from CD-ROM.Make sure that your computer is boot able by CD, otherwise this will not work.
I have not tested this with any version of Windows XP besides XP Pro. It might work in Home Edition or other versions. If you do this, then you will get the "Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete to begin" box when you turn on your computer, before it asks for your username and password. It also asks for you to press Ctrl-Alt-Del before you can unlock your computer if you lock it. This is done by default in Windows 2000 Server or Windows Server 2003.
When I press the backtick key (top left) it doesn't do anything, until I press it again, when it produces two, "``", but I can never get just one. I've got all regional settings set at "English (United Kingdom). The device is listed as standard 102/103 or microsoft natural.
I have a Dell 4600c desktop. The hard drive is corrupt (ATA), so I installed a new one. (PATA 160GB).I cannot get past the error message to install Windows XP..OS mode enabled. limited memory 256GB, press F1 or 2 F2.
I have a computer that I just put a new hard drive into with fresh install of Win XP home. It's an Intel board and the start up always pauses after the messages that it's detected a keyboard and mouse and usb. Then it pauses and just says press F1 to continue. Pressing F1 makes it continue to start up normally. I have reset the Bios values to defaults and tried to change several of them, with not effect at all. If I unplug the keyboard it sometimes skips the F1 pause. The intel website has not proved helpful. They don't have any discussion groups either.
I got problem with his desktop XP SP2 , when he starts the PC it boots normally till it reaches where it shows windows XP logo then the screen gets blank (i.e he can not see the login name for users). What he used to do: is press the sleep button on the wireless keyboard, then after that press the hardware switch on/off button (not the reset button) on the tower of the hard box. After pressing switch on/off button, he gets directly (pay attention to this) to the login screen where he can see the usernames for all users. He has to do this procedure every time he would like to boot the desktop
I was on my friends computer looking for viruses, spyware, adware, etc. It was pretty clean since he had recently reformatted. I randomly tried to open up a text file and it brought up the screen where you select a program to open it with. Well, notepad isn't there. I goto browse and select it in the Windows dir and press ok and it still doesn't show up in the list. Whats going on? He has Windows XP Pro with SP2.
I was getting the message "ntldr is missing-press any key to restart". I was able to fix that through trail and error. After I restarted my computer I got the message "disc error". Would someone be able to help out. I am running Windows XP.
I have had several customers who have had shutdown problems. The error message offers 2 choices: "End Now" and "Cancel." I think this is caused by part of the program being stuck in memory, but I'm not sure memory leak? more RAM, adjust VM or disk cache, ...??
Today my computer went slow so i restarted it and from that point it kept doing the same thing: it starts, then the dialog where it asks u if to start normal or safe mode (but keyboard doesnt work) then after the 28sec it tries to load windows, but a blue screen is shown and then restart again. I put the reinstalation CD but when i get to the "To boot from CD press any key" i cant becouse keyboard is not working.
Anyone know how to automatically boot from the hard drive? Has any one seen this before? I have been in the BIOS, set the hdd as the first device to boot from.I have looked through the BIOS but I can't find anything that jumps out as different or pertaining to this Boot Message.I looked at the boot.ini file, nothing there.I am running Win2k Pro.I don't know where else to look to disable this boot interaction..
I am trying to reformat my computer... I had some alzheimers issues with it.. it lost some files etc etc. So I figured why not a better time to completely wipe it clean.I have done this before on other computers and its gone so smoothly with the "press space bar" deal as it boots from the XP disc. I reordered all my boot config so the cdrom is first then the hdd then something called an fdd then floppy.BUT when I exit bios and restart the boot it never asks for the space bar press...
I've tried several times to install Windows XP now on a new Maxtor drive bought just the other day. When I have the disc in, it loads to the blue install screen without asking me to press a key to boot from cd, I choose to install, partition the drive and format. It copies the files and then restarts, but when it loads again it still doesn't ask for me to press a key (which you aren't supposed to press the second time), and it loads back to the first menu, where I can start all over again.
I'm using a pentium3, micronpc. I'm running on xp pro. press alt+Ctrl+Del for the pc to continue start-up. I've already gone into the BIOS settings and changed the boot sequence around but it's still not conrected the problem.

Just bought my grandson a Dell ( DPH).GX280+ 15" monitor from a co. This a reconditioned unit(suppose)? CPU fan sounds akin to a euro fighter on take off,but the main problem is that the on screen message on the monitor is "power save- press any key or move the mouse "Problem is the usb ports are not supplying power to mice or keyboards .(Tried a few) The monitor is ok.as tried it on this comp.Anybody any ideas or is it just a duff buy?
Have been constructing a new pc. everything is in place, and every component is definately compatible with one another. the problem is when i try to install XP, i am able to load the windows files, including a sata driver for my 160 gb maxtor, from a floppy disk. when it prompts me to continue with installation by pressing ENTER, i press enter and the computer restarts whats all that about?
is there a way for the windows task manager (alt-ctrl-del) to appear in an instant when i press the keys? the window is taking forever to appear in front of non-responding programs.it seems like the pc is trying to solve the problem first, but i just want to end whatever it is processing quickly.
I just reformatted my 20G HD. I have an Intel D845GLLY motherboard with a Pentium 4 processor. When I try to load Windows XP Pro from the installation disk it says "NTLDR is missing", so either it is not on my installation cd, or most likely the files are corrupt. I got my XP Pro from the MSDAA; I am in school to be a Computer Forensic Specialist. So, I got a floppy disk and copied NTLDR, NTDETECT, and boot.ini to it. When I put the floppy in my computer though, it says that it is not bootable. How do I get those (3) files on my computer that has been formatted? Are there other files that I need on my floppy.
My computer will not shut down. When I hit the "start" button and then select "shutdown" it goes through all of the motions, but then it reboots. It is almost as though it thinks that I am hitting the "restart" button instead of the "shutdown" button. When I followed the checklist in Windows, it suggested a restore point. I tried that but it said that I had made no changes to the computer since that restore point and therefore I could not use the restore point technique.
When I restart the computer it POSTs fine (counts the memory, displays "the" table... etc). When It's about to start Windows it starts beeping. Continuous short beeps. The cursor just blinks on the screen and it beeps. When I press F8 to get to the boot menu, nothing happens. No boot menu appears.I did a repair install from my XP install CD - same thing happens, nothing has changed. I tried to restore MBR record through recovery console but again same thing, no change.
When I press Alt + Ctrl + Delete in my office iam getiing an option to lock the windows , but when i do the same in my house i straight away get the task manager. Is there anything that i can do in windows to get that option . I have windows XP OS .
I have been experiencing this for the last few weeks. Whenever I press the delete button to delete a file from a folder, the windows explorer freezes and then I have to go to task manager to end this.
I ran a recovery on my computer and now I get a message, "NTLDR is Compressed press atl. ctrl. del to restart." When I restart it gives the same message each time.
