I'm using a Compaq Desktop PC. Would you suggest that I enable either Standby or Hibernate mode? BTW, do you put your desktop at a place where there's ventilation to keep it cool?

My computer was having a personality disorder so I decided to save all my files from the hard drive and do a system restore back to the original factory settings. I don't have the installation disks anymore and would like to avoid having to order them. When I started the process, the desktop locked up on me. The keyboard wasn't recognized and I couldn't mouse to any programs or functions. It didn't even complete it's startup sequence, and the icons on the right side by the clock never showed up.
So I restarted the computer in safe mode and saved my files. When I tried to do a system restore from safe mode, I got an error stating that system restore was disabled and couldn't be enabled in safe mode. I'd have to restart in normal mode and change the settings. Therein lies the problem: when I start in normal mode the computer locks up immediately, and I can't change the settings

My computer had a problem when it would turn on and turn off randomly, or it would start and shut off automatically. I took it to the repair shop and told me it could be power supply. They had the power supply changed and now every time it turns on I get a "Press a Key to Reboot", and even when I press a key it would still go back to that message. They told me the solution would be to reformat the computer, but important files and programs are on there and there is no back up so I can't have it formatted. Anyone has any solution to this? The computer was fine before, it just wouldn't start up sometimes but when it does it runs smoothly

I have not tested this with any version of Windows XP besides XP Pro. It might work in Home Edition or other versions. If you do this, then you will get the "Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete to begin" box when you turn on your computer, before it asks for your username and password. It also asks for you to press Ctrl-Alt-Del before you can unlock your computer if you lock it. This is done by default in Windows 2000 Server or Windows Server 2003.

I have a computer that I just put a new hard drive into with fresh install of Win XP home. It's an Intel board and the start up always pauses after the messages that it's detected a keyboard and mouse and
usb. Then it pauses and just says press F1 to continue. Pressing F1 makes it continue to start up normally.
I have reset the Bios values to defaults and tried to change several of them, with not effect at all. If I unplug the keyboard it sometimes skips the F1 pause. The intel website has not proved helpful. They don't have any discussion groups either.

I got problem with his desktop XP SP2 , when he starts the PC it boots normally till it reaches where it shows windows XP logo then the screen gets blank (i.e he can not see the login name for users). What he used to do: is press the sleep button on the wireless keyboard, then after that press the hardware switch on/off button (not the reset button) on the tower of the hard box. After pressing switch on/off button, he gets directly (pay attention to this) to the login screen where he can see the usernames for all users. He has to do this procedure every time he would like to boot the desktop

I was on my friends computer looking for viruses, spyware, adware, etc. It was pretty clean since he had recently reformatted. I randomly tried to open up a text file and it brought up the screen where you select a program to open it with. Well, notepad isn't there. I goto browse and select it in the Windows dir and press ok and it still doesn't show up in the list. Whats going on? He has Windows XP Pro with SP2.

I have had several customers who have had shutdown problems. The error message offers 2 choices: "End Now" and "Cancel." I think this is caused by part of the program being stuck in memory, but I'm not sure memory leak? more RAM, adjust VM or disk cache, ...??

I am trying to reformat my computer... I had some alzheimers issues with it.. it lost some files etc etc. So I figured why not a better time to completely wipe it clean.I have done this before on other computers and its gone so smoothly with the "press space bar" deal as it boots from the XP disc. I reordered all my boot config so the cdrom is first then the hdd then something called an fdd then floppy.BUT when I exit bios and restart the boot it never asks for the space bar press...

I've tried several times to install Windows XP now on a new Maxtor drive bought just the other day. When I have the disc in, it loads to the blue install screen without asking me to press a key to boot from cd, I choose to install, partition the drive and format. It copies the files and then restarts, but when it loads again it still doesn't ask for me to press a key (which you aren't supposed to press the second time), and it loads back to the first menu, where I can start all over again.

this is the best way I know to explain all of this. I am running a 3 yr old Gateway with Windows xp and Sp 1 & 2. I have always stayed up to date with my Windows updates deleting cookies, defrags and so on. I am running Avast anti virus and Armor 2 Net firewall. I have noticed over a period of about a mth that my system has been getting pretty slow to boot up and load up web pages. Now I am having to manually start my PC and I have to do it in safe mode F8 and click on debugging mode. If I don't do it this way then everything loads up and then my PC just turns itself off. I have PC doctor and I have done a complete diagnostic test and I have gone to antivirus.com and did a virus scan there as well as with my Avast. I am thinking that I may have to totally take everything out and reinstall everything back in. The only thing is -is that I don't know what to type in to get the whole thing going. Also I have been getting a message but only sometimes that says RTL cannot locate HPOIPMO7.exe (HPOIMO7.exe) I haven't a clue what this is. Might it have anything to do with what is going on. I don't mean to write a book here but there is one other thing, the other day I had a window pop up that said that windows needed me to reinstall my xp software and when I tried it said that the version that I was already running was newer than the cd software I was trying to install and wouldn't accept it.

I just reformatted my 20G HD. I have an Intel D845GLLY motherboard with a Pentium 4 processor. When I try to load Windows XP Pro from the installation disk it says "NTLDR is missing", so either it is not on my installation cd, or most likely the files are corrupt. I got my XP Pro from the MSDAA; I am in school to be a Computer Forensic Specialist. So, I got a floppy disk and copied NTLDR, NTDETECT, and boot.ini to it. When I put the floppy in my computer though, it says that it is not bootable. How do I get those (3) files on my computer that has been formatted? Are there other files that I need on my floppy.

My computer will not shut down. When I hit the "start" button and then select "shutdown" it goes through all of the motions, but then it reboots. It is almost as though it thinks that I am hitting the "restart" button instead of the "shutdown" button. When I followed the checklist in Windows, it suggested a restore point. I tried that but it said that I had made no changes to the computer since that restore point and therefore I could not use the restore point technique.
