Clicking OK or CANCEL allows me to go on - but something is wrong.Sometimes I just get a WINDOWS SCREEN but the items in the TASK BAR are blue boxes rather than Start, etc. and at other times the "Blue Screen" shows up.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm getting an error message at startup and when I run a couple of programs, An exception "unhandled win32 exception has occurred in programname.exe" However no debuggers are registered that can debug this exception. Unable to jet debug. I contacted Microsoft support who advise to do a repair install of xp, but I did this once before, on a different pc, and lost all the startmenu shortcuts to my installed programs, so am a bit loathe to do this, also as a test I created another administrative account and I don't get this issue. The simple solution (but not the most convenient) would be to use this other account, but is there another way around this?

I don't know why it's searching for some removable media (I think) when my thumb drive is still inserted. I have been having similar problems since the stupid Geek Squad told me I needed a new hard drive and then named it the "H" drive for some reason; now from time-to-time when I try to run programs which (I think) used to be based off my C drive I'll get one of these or a C+++ runtime error window.How can I make this stop? I ran setup.exe to install Visual Studio 6.0 using DVD. It crashed. I thought DVD is bad or corrupted and used some other CD. Still Visual Studio6.0 installation wizard is crashing. View 1 Replies View RelatedIn the past few months I've added a 512 stick of RAM and replaced the hard drive in my five year old laptop with a brand new Seagate Momentus. The laptop itself is a Pentium M 1.8 running Windows XP Home (Service Pack 3). Also in the past few months I've started receiving BSOD's for Machine Check Exception errors. The numbers tend to vary, though I can never catch one long enough to write them down, as the system flashes the error screen and then shuts off or reboots.
I've run MemTest as recently as this afternoon and the results came back with no errors found in the memory. I ran a SMART test from SpeedFan on the new HD and it was deemed perfectly fit. Still, I can't shake the feeling there's something going on with the new hardware in this laptop, as I had never even heard of a Machine Check Exception since I never got one until some time after installing the parts.
I notice I get this specific error when playing a computer game (Diablo 2, for Christ's sake, so the game isn't particularly taxing!) or watching video, ie intensive activities. It never happens while just browsing the net. I am not overclocking the processor. In fact, I'm undervolting it to keep heat down, though I've turned off Notebook Hardware Control to go back to normal voltage setting and I still get the Machine Check Exception errors with the same frequency.

Also, there is a "service.exe" application error that occurs a split second before the computer turns off, so on the "windows is shutting down" screen. No page opens, the IE logo on the top right corner of the page doesn't move but IE doesn't hang up, if I close it, it closes normally. Also, when I click on System Restore a window opens up with nothing on it - it is completely white and blank. On the top left corner (where the system restore logo is shown) I see a logo of Windows XP's 'Unknown Application'.

I have checked everywhere and cannot find out what this file is associated with. In addition I have gone through my system and purged all files associated with this executable from the registry. They pop right back in there with a system restart. I'm lost and confused now because I don't know what application uses this file.2. When closing down I receive the same Norton error message another user gets."ccaps.exe" at signoff. I will try and remove Norton to see if that works. 3. After I enter a series of keystrokes and stop, I get the chimes sound. This
is quite annoying but I can't find a setting to turn it off. The only way to

Does anyone know what this sound artifact is and where it is coming from? It has been in windows for as long as I can remember in XP on 3+ computers and may also have occurred in previous versions.It occurs at random times and it is not very loud (though the first one is louder than the second, each lasting for maybe a 1/4 of a second with maybe a 1.5 sec silent interval in between) but it is somewhat annoying and makes me wonder what the h3ll it is.If anyone knows anything about it please post here. Also if anyone else has heard it, please post to this thread too. I would like to know how many other users out there are aware of this problem.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI noticed that my screen saver was never running ever after I left my computer unattended for several hours. This is not the problem, but a sympton of what I believe is the main issue. Every couple of minutes a box pops up on my task bar for about a second and then disappears. There is no text in the box so I have no idea what it is. I assume it is some application that is either trying to run or set to check for something periodically. That's why the screen saver is not running I guess. I there anyway to find out what is causing this. I've run Norton Antivirus (clean) and Microsoft Anti-Spyware and Spybot (also OK). I've look at my Task Manager and didn't see anything unusual there. I ran MSCONFIG and disabled any applications (other than system apps and ones that I was familiar with). I cleared out my "Startup" folder. I don't know what else to do to track down this rouge application.
