Unable To Cleanly Shutdown / Sleep Asus G75VW

Apr 8, 2014

It's an Asus G75VW-BBK5 I got in November of 2012 (refurbished) running Windows 8.1 x64.

It always plays coy with shutting down/sleeping. Whether I am closing the lid, shutting down/sleeping from the menu/tapping the power button, it will always log off, give me the message that it is restarting/sleeping/shuttingdown in the center of the screen for a few seconds, turn off the screen, and then continue to run, such that if I tap a key or use the touchpad, it will instantly turn on the screen and give me a logon prompt as if I had never turned it off (but only logged off).

The only way to shut it down is to hold the powerbutton for a few seconds or remove the battery while it is unplugged.

Other than this, I can't complain of any outstanding issues.

I have attached the diagnostics usually requested for a BSOD troubleshoot.

If I remember correctly, you can ignore the dump file. That was from a BSOD caused by the secondary SSD being jarred loose when I wasn't gentle enough with it.

Other than this issue, there is no problem this laptop. I have, of course, run powercfg -requests to see if any processes were causing it. Nothing showed up.

How to get it to start shutting down/sleeping properly? I'm getting tired of finding it still running in my backpack an hour or two after I packed up. Sometimes I will only know that something is wrong when the backpack is hot or when I see it show up in my list of active computers on Teamviewer when I am using a different computer.

Windows 8.1.1 Won't Sleep Or Shutdown?

Jun 29, 2014

Something changed in the last week or so that has caused the system to sometimes not automatically go to sleep and when it does not go to sleep after the selected time it won't shutdown either. When this happens and I try to shutdown the system it shuts down but then immediately reboots on it's own. This has only happened two or three times in the last week but I never had this issue until recently! It appears like I can either turn off the power via the power supply and restart to make the problem go away or if I manually put it to sleep and wake up it will power down - at least that is what worked the last time this happened. I did install update KB2962409 around the time the problem appeared?

System Won't Sleep Or Shutdown After 8.1 Update

Serious problem after 8.1 update from windows 8. My Dell notebook won't sleep when idled or lid closed, nor will it shutdown. The screen turns black, and the LED blacklight and fan are still on and cannot revert to normal mode unless I do a hard reset.

Updated to latest drivers and windows update, to no avail. Checked sleep and power options, and they're still the same as before.

Windows 8.1 Refuses To Sleep / Shutdown

Jul 14, 2013

Windows 8.1(full fresh install) will not go to sleep/shut down etc. This has been happening since I installed 8.1 a few weeks back. It works/worked fine in Windows 7 and windows 8.0 till this install. I have narrowed it down to the Ethernet Chipset ( on board Realtec RTL8110 SC )

All the settings in the device manager the powercfg commands etc etc. Disabling in device manager does not work either ...

Then today I have found out that when you take the Ethernet Cable out of the computer............it goes to sleep. Why did I not try this before? ? ? When I remove the cable from the router, it stays awake when plugged in at the computer end.

Once asleep it stays that way and if I get it to sleep by other means - PWR ButtonSleep Option in W 8.1, it stays sleeping.

Hardware Drivers :: Win 8 RTM - Can't Sleep / Hibernate Or Shutdown

Aug 26, 2012

I just upgraded to Windows 8 Enterprise x64 RTM yesterday, and have noticed an annoying problem that wasn't present under Windows 7 Enterprise x64 (which I was running previously). Specifically, the machine will not sleep, will not hibernate and will not shut down. When any of the three are attempted, they appear to succeed, but then the computer will immediately wake up again. In the case of a shutdown, the computer will actually power completely off and then start right back up immediately. I never used to sleep the machine in Windows 7, but I know the hibernation used to work and certainly shutting down did as well, as I shut the machine down every night.

In the event viewer, I have a Power-Troubleshooter event (ID 1) every time the machine wakes back up from an attempted sleep, hibernation or shutdown, but it always indicates that the wake source is "Unknown." I have tried unplugging every single Ethernet, USB and eSATA cable from the PC until nothing was left plugged in but the monitors, audio out and AC power -- just in case a device was sending a magic packet or some kind of wake-up signal. Even so, I still experienced the same immediate waking problems on shutdown, hibernate or sleep.

I was able to solve the inability to shut down by disabling Windows 8's "Fast Startup" option, which as I understand it uses a kind of hybrid hibernation. Hibernation is not working properly on my system. At least with "Fast Startup" disabled, I can actually shut the machine down. It's a pity though because I really liked Fast Startup's performance.

I've tried installing the authentic manufacturer drivers for my chipset (Intel 975 / ICH7 series), onboard LAN adapters and so forth in case the generic Microsoft drivers were at fault. The specific driver installation seemed to work fine but my problem remains.

Full system specs are in my profile, but it's kind of an old box I put together in late 2006. Core components of possible relevance to this issue are an Asus P5W DH Deluxe motherboard and Seasonic S12 600W power supply. The motherboard is running the very latest BIOS revision (3002). My Windows 8 installation was an in-place upgrade of my previous Windows 7 installation; everything seems to be working fine except for the weird power stuff.

Here's one other thing I should note, which concerns me somewhat as it is related by definition. In the P5W DH Deluxe's BIOS, there is an "ACPI 2.0 Support" option which defaults to "Disabled". Back when I built the machine I left it alone so it has been disabled this whole time. During my troubleshooting of these issues earlier tonight, I decided to try switching it to "Enabled" to see if it would have any effect. It has not fixed the issues at all, but it does make me wonder. Is there any way to tell whether Windows 8 has correctly identified the system as being ACPI 2.0 compliant? I think I remember in the old days WinXP used to have to be completely reinstalled when that switch was flipped.

Additionally, and much to my consternation, I can no longer use Wake On LAN. I've actually fixed the WoL issue. I had to go into Device Manager, find my network adapter and get the properties of it -- then, on the Advanced tab, find the property called "Wake From Shutdown" and set it to "On". This must have been either a new property in the Windows 8 driver for my network adapter, or was reset back to Off for some reason when I did the Win7 -> Windows 8 upgrade.

Windows 8 Hangs On Boot / Shutdown And Won't Sleep

Mar 17, 2013

I upgraded from Windows 7 (64-Bit) to 8 (64-Bit). When I had 7 it took about 10 seconds to boot, but now it can take anywhere from 2-5 mins, also it doesn't shutdown (I have to hold down the power button) and it never sleeps (the screen goes off but the laptop remains running).

Windows 8 Sleep / Wake / Restart And Shutdown?

Jan 15, 2013

Any magic keystroke combination for "Sleep" or is there anyway to create one? I know about Win+I then Power then Sleep.

Any option to stop scheduled tasks or other triggers that "Wake" your computer from sleep? I find my computer running in the morning after putting it to sleep at the end of the previous evening! I have reviewed all 41 scheduled tasks created by Windows and installed applications and "apps" and found none that have the Wake Computer check box checked. What's annoying is the fact that once woken the computer does not go back to sleep again! I am using the supplied balanced Power plan.

Windows Time Not Synchronized After Sleep / Restart Or Shutdown

Jan 3, 2014

I started to notice a change with the clock every now and then. I finally concluded that the clock does not change during sleep, restart, or shutdown.

My computer goes to sleep often, and when it wakes up from sleep, the time is the same as when it was prior to sleeping, not synchronizing to the correct time after waking up.

I've done some research and I fell onto the official Windows thread where they explained the use of third-party-utility will cause this problem.

The big problem here is that I don't have the single clue which ones. I tried uninstalling some, not sure if I left any utilities out. The utilities I've used are the general ones for visual styles and themes.

I'm running Windows 8.1.

Windows 8.1 With Update - Asus Laptop Constantly Going Into Sleep?

I have an ASUS laptop (N53Jq, i7, GT425M, 8GB) with Windows 8.1, with update. It's being used like a desktop computer, with the lid closed connected to a monitor through HDMI and with mouse and keyboard. I have the Power4Gear Hybrid driver, to set the high performance mode in my PC, but after awhile it still goes into sleep mode (like 1 or 2 minutes). It's really weird, I checked every setting (on the driver app and control panel) and sleep mode is off everywhere.

Asus S400CA / Windows 8.1 Crashes Going Into Sleep Mode

Jan 8, 2014

I have a new Asus S400CA that came with Windows 8 and I updated to 8.1 out of the box. The computer crashes when it goes into sleep mode probably 1 out of 3 times. I have tried updating all the drivers, including the wireless driver. I have it set to make minidumps but they aren't being created anymore (last one was on 12/5). Usually I get no indication that the computer crashes but it takes a long time to boot back up, although occasionally it will say Windows encountered a problem and has to restart.

I am also getting a ton of Schannel 36888 errors, although I don't know if that's related.

ASUS Vivobook / Windows 8 - Black Screen When Waking From Sleep

The laptop is an ASUS Vivobook, running Windows 8. Once I woke up it from sleep, and the screen was blank. The backlight was on, but the screen was black. So I held the power button, and then started it up again.

When it got past the BIOS screen, it then said "Configuring Windows Updates". It then got stuck at ~50%, rebooted, and then gave a black screen again.

After a force shut-down, it resumed the "Configuring Windows Updates", this time from 60%, and booted normally. Is this normal, or should I ask for a replacement?

Hardware Drivers :: Asus PCE N15 Unable To Connect?

Mar 4, 2013

My roommate has a custom desktop PC, which runs Windows 8 x64.

It can't connect to the internet, or the local network. Windows says limited connection, but ping the router IP yields only lost packages. Solving the error with the automatic error solver, displays problems with the DNS.

The roommate says the connection has worked for a limited time, for about a 1/2 hour, but fell out from time to time.

He has tried to connect to our wireless router, a wireless n d-link dir615. It is set to WPA/WPA2 with AES cipher and PSK.The router runs the newest firmware available, which gives no issues for any other device in the house. (Including Iphones, android phones, old and new N-capable, and N-incapable laptops and desktops).

His PC has an almost unused Asus PCE N15 wireless adapter installed. He says it worked on a different network (He just moved in).

I have tried to give him a static IP and dns, both in windows, and get the router to assign one to him.

I have tried to give him an alternative DNS, e.g. OpenDNS.

I have tried to update his drivers, both the ones provided from Asus, but also one from realtek, since the NIC has a realtek chip on it.

Apps / Software :: Unable To Install Asus AI Suite 3

Jul 10, 2014

I just reinstalled my windows 8.1 pro because of usb driver corruption that occurred due to windows update driver update.

So i basically installed all my drivers using DRP(Driver Pack Solution) and all went well.

Then I wanted to install Asus Utilities like EZupdate,Aisuite, usb charger but none of their setup works .

Whenever I click on setup it starts some asus com services but after that nothing happens no setup screen is popping up it just quits.

And I am having problem only installing Asus Software other software are installing fine.

My pc specs are as follows:

1)Intel 4670 K
2)Asus Sabertooth Z87
3)12 GB DDR 3 ram
4)Windows 8.1 Pro X64

I already tried enabling and disabling UAC and smart-screen but that didn't affect the setup.exe.

I tried running all exe as admin that also didn't work.

There is no unblock button for the setup so it should work as normal.

I even re-downloaded the asus tools from their website still the setup wont launch.

I am using Bit-Defender Total security but i even paused protection and tried still the asussetup.exe nothing happens when i click it except starting some Asus service in task manager.

I tried some solution from asus forums running AI suite cleaner in safemode and re-try installation but still nothing happens when i click on asussetup.exe.

Setup Installation :: Unable To Use Built-in ASUS Recovery Partition

Jan 17, 2014

Alright, so my ASUS laptop has been getting a little slow lately, so I decided to reinstall. Now I know my PC has an ASUS recovery partition, which reinstall the pc with all the tools, drivers etc, since I've used it before. But now when I restart the computer and press F9 and reset, it doesn't work. This is what I do:

This is where it was supposed to give me the option to restore whole drive or just install windows to the primary partition. But now it asks for a CD, which I don't have. This PC never used to have a recovery CD, just a recovery partition.

Then, I read somewhere I could do the same from inside Windows 8, so I tried that as well by going to the charms bar, then Settings and then "Change PC settings". Then I selected "Update and recovery" from the left, and then went to Recovery, where I pressed the button to remove everything and reinstall windows. This is what I got:

So, I tried to see if EaseUs Partition manager showed the recovery partition. I started ASUS and these are the partitions it found:

I saw it found both a "Recovery" partition and a "Restore" partition. Now I assume the Recovery partition is the one Windows 8 boots into, and the Restore partition is the one created by ASUS. So, these are the contents of the Recovery partition:

And these are the contents of the Restore partition:

As you can see outlined in red, it does contain an install.wim file, so I know the recovery data is there. However the Windows 8 recovery environment just isn't able to find it.

Start Screen Went Blank After Sleep - Unable To Add Icons?

Apr 14, 2013

I put my computer in sleep mode, as I have done many times. But this time, after I brought it back on, my Start Screen was missing all the tiles. AND, I can't put them back. When I click the "All Apps" button at the bottom, my screen just goes blank.

My desktop works, so I haven't lost anything. Just have a totally disfunctional Start Screen.

Symptoms:

1) After boot, I'm at the Start Screen.

2) The screen isn't blank. It's got the background and the START in the corner. It's just blank of tiles. There are no tiles on my Start screen.

3) If I go to bottom and right click, I see "All Apps" and if I click that, the screen then goes blank, and the background changes. The screen is totally blank and nothing works except the side menus. There are no tiles listed and no text on the screen.

Unable To Connect Two Windows 8 Laptops (dell And Asus) To Home Network

Sep 11, 2014

I have been unable to connect two windows 8 laptops (dell and asus) to my home network (and internet). At the same time I have connected 2 xp laptops and 3 kindles with no problems. My security consists of using mac addresses only and all other security is turned off.

The offending laptops will also only show the 5gz and not the 2.4gz in available networks (one laptop is brand new and the other is about 1.5 years old). I have also disabled all security on one of the laptops to see if that was the problem (it was not). When trying to connect I have two basic reactions. The first is that its taking too long (cannot connect) and the other is that there is limited connectivity. In addition to that I am sometimes told that the ip address is not right (malformed, I think).

I got the mac addresses, of the offending laptops, by the standard cmd/ipconfig /all path and choose the wireless wi ip but have also tried the other wireless as well with no better results (just making sure)

I also have an edimax extender plugged in and it works. The laptops also show fewer network connections than my asus 1000ha w/d-link dongle. My own laptop, incidentally, is clicked into the 5gz network connection directly from the router (edimax kinda redundant <g>)

I posted this in windows 8 topics as I think this is probably a windows 8 problem given the ability to connect other machines with no problem.

The router is a netgear wndr3400 and is working just fine for all but the windows 8 machine.
