Any Harm In Doing A Force Power Shutdown?

Jun 6, 2014

I had to do force power shutdown it while the whole system got stuck up following Prime95 stability scan when I customised blend settings for CPU 100% load along with 92% memory usage. Next time it was when the system freezed following CoreTemp startup (when I researched it through forums i could notice that the freezing issue is a bug in their latest version still persisting while running on win 8.1 OS). The last one was when I had to do when while shutting down normally I unplugged the usb connection from the port and system remained 'on' for unusually long time while screen had already turned off.

Force Shutdown After (Plugged In / Not Charging) Now Cannot Boot?

Sep 5, 2013

Today I was shutting down my computer because I received the issue of 'plugged in, not charging...' once again. When it was shutting off everything shut down but the power was still on (the blue light on my laptop keyboard was on, it's off when the laptop is off).

I then decided to force-shut down my laptop by holding down the power button. After doing that I tried to turn it back and it refused to go past this screen:

[IMG] [URL] ......

After waiting for a while and returning from a shower it then went to a black screen which only showed my mouse icon. I installed windows 8 about 6 months ago from the official website for a fee; I didn't use a boot disk.

Win 8.1 - Cannot Force Hybrid Shutdown / Fast Startup

Jan 23, 2014

On Acer 3820TG (Win 8.1) I am trying to force system to use hybrid shutdown/fast startup function. I've already tried all steps from this topic: Fast Startup - Force Use by All Users in Windows 8 but no success - system performs full shutdown. The only solution that works for me is shutting down with command "shutdown.exe /s /hybrid /t 0". Then system shuts down in ~5 sec and starts in ~15 s.

If you shut down a computer from the right-click-left-bottom-corner menu in desktop mode, then click Shutdown -> system performs full shutdown. If you click Shutdown in charms bar -> system performs hybrid shutdown. Now my PC is starting in 8s, laptop in 15s.

Updates :: Force Updates Installation During Shutdown?

Oct 6, 2013

It seems that Windows 8 will only install some updates after a restart. No surprises here. However, since the Windows 8 "user" shutdown is not a real shutdown, but a hibernation (hence it will not be followed by a restart, and will not install updates), Windows 8 forces us to an extra restart/reboot. Is there a a way to simulate the logical behaviour of all previous Windows editions? That is, when updates that require a restart are installed, if the user shuts down, the updates get installed and the pc shuts down...Currently, my only away around this, is to select restart, wait... then enter the BIOS and turn off the pc there... Not intuitive.

Win 8 Pro- How To Force All Apps Screen To Refresh

Dec 18, 2012

I am currently running a 64 bit version of Windows 8 Pro with all available MS updates applied to it.

I have the need to change the name of one of the program groups that appear on the All Apps screen.

Let's say the group name is "Test". And I want to change the name to "Answer".

I navigate to the Desktop interface.

I go to: C:ProgramDataMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms

I rename the folder "Test" to "Answer"

I navigate back to the Metro interface.

I open the All Apps screen, but I still "see" the group named "Test".

Even if I log out and log back on. Or. if I log on as a different user.

Is there a way for me to force Windows 8 to update the All Apps screen ?

By the way ........

The above folder has a shortcut in it that points to Notepad.exe.

If I follow the same procedure (above) to rename the shortcut inside of the folder, the new shortcut name appears immediately when I return to the All Apps screen.

It's only the group name, that is not refreshing on the All Apps screen. (For some reason.)

Accounts :: How To Force Using PIN By Default At Every Login / Unlock

Mar 2, 2013

I've setup my machine to enable PIN login (I find it quite convenient as the computer is 99% of the time in my home and 4 digit PIN is enough to discourage family from tinkering with my machine but easy enough to quickly unlock - I had 3 letter pass on my win 7) but I'm facing an issue - often, even tho I've previously selected PIN windows 8 default to password after computer wake up (even after short sleep) which is annoying because of muscle memory (swipe lockscreen, enter pin - when it's password I have to remove it, change to PIN and so on).

How to force using PIN by default at every login/unlock?

Accounts :: Does Windows 8.1 Upgrade Force Use Of Password?

Oct 19, 2013

When I did a clean install of Windows 8, I simply left the password field blank. The computer is a single user and in Windows 8 mode it starts up automatically with no sign in or password required. Same when it wakes from a monitor shutdown. No sign in or password needed.

Will that remain the same when I upgrade to 8.1? Is there any way to force it to be that way?

Anyway as the title suggests I'm trying to run STEF (Star Trek Elite Force) in WinXP which I installed on VirtualBox but I keep getting a error: The virtual machine window is optimized to work in 32 bit color mode but the virtual display is currently set to 16 bit.

Please open the display properties dialog of the guest OS and select 32 bit color mode, if it is available, for the best possible performance of the virtual video subsystem." So I changed it in the control panel then booted the game still the same error so I opened the properties for the game and checked run at 265 bit color booted it and got an error which stated that it could not load the OpenGL subsystem.

Audio :: Realtek HD Audio Driver - Keep Getting Error Messages That Force Computer To Restart?

Aug 21, 2014

Recently I decided to go ahead and update to the Windows 8.1 version of the Realtek HD Audio Driver. I procrastinated because it told me I'd have to uninstall the original audio driver and I knew it would take a while to do everything needed. It didn't work that after uninstalling the original audio driver, then restarting like Windows told me to do, I kept getting error messages that forced my computer to restart until eventually my computer let me log in and install the updated audio driver.

However, with the updated version of this driver I had the same issue I got with the original one only much much worse. The original Realtek HD Audio Driver that I had on my computer made music and videos sound absolutely awful when headphones were plugged in. I found out that this is because the driver automatically puts on so-called "enhancements" whenever headphones are plugged in. This was a very simple fix, simply go to "Sound", then under "Playback" you click on "Speakers", then go to "Enhancements" and check the box labeled "Disable all sound effects." Then sound through headphones would return to normal.

Well, with the Window 8.1 version of this audio driver, I can do the same thing, but it never stays that way. Every time I plug in my headphones, it resets back to having enhancements. The strange thing though is that it says the enhancements are disabled but when I reactivate the enhancements(No difference in sound quality) then deactivate it again, suddenly the sound through my headphones is back to normal.

Did the audio driver not install properly? Is there something I can do to permanently disable the audio enhancements?

Network / Sharing :: Force Remapping Of Network Without Reboot

May 1, 2014

Sometimes if I bring a new Linux server machine up online and take down an old one some Windows machines cannot see the new machine but still list old computers in the Network mapping.

Is there a command to FORCE a rescan of Network computers without REBOOTING the windows machine.

I've waited 15 mins and Network still shows OLD server and not the new one.

(The Linux new server sees ALL the Windows machines once the SAMBA service starts and can access THEIR shares !!).

example -- new server is GYLFI-EXT (has Movies etc streaming data), Old Server GYLFI

Windows only sees OLD server

New Server sees Windows and can access its shares.

Nothing running on the Windows machine currently so I can't see what's stopping it getting the new machine. (I'm trying to stream my movies to it -- works fine when I can SEE the server !!!!).

A (Windows) reboot fixes this stuff but I shouldn't have to do it.

Fan At Full Speed During Shut Down And Sleep

Jul 12, 2013

I recently purchased a new desktop and it came with Windows 8 installed on it. Everything worked fine for the first two weeks. Then, I noticed my fan was running at full speed when I'd come into the room after a while. My desktop was in sleep mode, so I was like, Woke my desktop up and the fan returned to normal. Every time my computer goes into sleep mode, the fan kicks on full blast. Okay... maybe no sleep mode, but the fan will shut off when I shut down my computer, right? Nope again. When my computer is shut down, the fan is still running at full speed. The thing is, when my computer is in sleep mode or shut down, the fan runs at full speed, but when I'm using it (like now) the fan is normal.

I've been looking around trying to find something related to my problem. I've came across a few articles on the forums, like Fans still running after shutdown of windows 8. Seems like my same problem, but it was during his install he shut down Windows. However, there was talk of this "bcdedit /set disabledynamictick yes", but I don't really want to mess with the my boot.ini files... I'm not bad at small programs, but I really don't want to toy around and destroy my desktop right now.

I've read some other articles about a Windows 8 laptop in idle mode with the same problem, and they said it was antivirus related. I figured that if that were the case, shouldn't have I seen it during the first time I booted up my desktop?

I think I started noticing this problem AFTER I installed some windows updates from Microsoft... Any way to verify that everything went smoothly, I kinda assumed and left my computer running while it was updating...

Full Screen Program Crashes

Feb 5, 2014

I sometimes experience crashes when playing some games, which is perfectly normal and I can understand that no program can ever be 100% crash proof, but I have noticed some really annoying behaviour during and after a crash.

With many games, when they crash from a full screen window they often cause the window switching behaviour to stop working, starting task manager to close the program is nearly always impossible because I cant switch to it. Any error dialogues, with important information, cant be viewed because all I can see is a blank black/white window, which cant be closed or interacted with in any way.

Often I find myself struggling to close a crashed app, and resort to logging off or even restarting sometimes.

Things I try that rarely work:

-Trying to even switch window.
-Trying to use task manager.
-Right clicking on the taskbar icon to close (doesn't close the app when pressed)

How it is caused and is there anyway to get rid of it?

Maintenance :: Backup Drive Is Full?

Apr 27, 2014

Several weeks ago I installed a remote hard drive. I am using it to store automatic system backups.

In the last few days I have been notified that the drive is full.

I am using 245GB on my primary (C:) drive.

The remote backup drive has a 1TB capacity.

It's somewhat surprising to be told that drive is full. Opening the drive to look at the files, there is a long list of subfolders under the folder labelled "Backup". One has a long, arcane number, and the other sub-sub folders seem to be daily updates named C/Users/My Name/ and from one to four sub sub sub folders or file names. Clicking on the multiple sub folders or the file names causes nothing to happen.

How can I clean this up? I would like to continue to back up my system automatically, but the drive seems to be full of garbage.
