ASUS Vivobook / Windows 8 - Black Screen When Waking From Sleep
Sep 15, 2013
The laptop is an ASUS Vivobook, running Windows 8. Once I woke up it from sleep, and the screen was blank. The backlight was on, but the screen was black. So I held the power button, and then started it up again.
When it got past the BIOS screen, it then said "Configuring Windows Updates". It then got stuck at ~50%, rebooted, and then gave a black screen again.
After a force shut-down, it resumed the "Configuring Windows Updates", this time from 60%, and booted normally. Is this normal, or should I ask for a replacement?

My system is old : MSI Neo2 Nforce3 + HD4650 Radeon AGP + 2 GB mem + AMD Athlon 3000+
However, I wanted to try Windows 8.1 Enterprise Evaluation for it and was able to install it successfully with 32 bit version (64 bit didn't work). I installed Radeon legacy AGP Hotfix 12.6 drivers that seem to work for the old AGP card giving Youtube HD playback! Not too shabby for a single core beast.
So I have been happy with the system performance (faster to boot than XP etc.).
However, I have encountered two problems that I haven't been able to resolve:
1 - Realtek Gigabit Ethernet (8111) fails to initialize the Internet on some boots, requiring enable/disable driver to make it work. I have installed newest drivers from Realtek website but no effect.
2 - When the system goes to sleep, it wakes up with black screen and no way to get picture back except resetting the computer. I have tried to change my MB BIOS setup (I have the latest BIOS installed) to disable S3 and use only S1 mode but to no avail. Black screen awaits in every wake up. I have also experienced once the driver_power_state_failure error..
So, I see there are many posts about black screens and sleep modes but I haven't found the solution for Nforce3 motherboard AGP setups yet.

Seen as my Windows 8.1 installation may be completely useless, I am going to booting up from BIOS. I have been putting Windows 7 (32-bit) on my USB drive and when I boot it with my laptop it shows up and says "Reboot and select proper device or insert boot media and press key". I have some important exams coming up and I need to do some revision - plus this is my only laptop!

I just bought an ASUS VivoBook S551LB laptop which comes with Windows 8. It has a 1TB harddrive and an extra 24GB SSD which is used for cache i guess. I wanted to reinstall Windows 8 because I didn't want to use the OEM version. Doing that took enough work. But after reinstalling i decided to check if the cache drive was still working. The Disk Management interface showed that the SSD was empty when previously it was completely full, so I guessed that the cache needed to be set up again.
I installed everything from my laptop's driver page and ran windows update until there were no more updates left. I looked in every ASUS and Intel application installed on the computer for options regarding the cache drive but there was nothing. The Condusiv ExpressCache program had no gui and the command line didn't work, and the Intel Rapid Storage Technology program wasn't showing most of the options which other people have.
I read lots of threads and everything seemed to point to the need for RAID. I tried the registry edits, BIOS options (and with safe boot), and looking for RAID drivers for my laptop. The BIOS only has the option for AHCI, and there are no RAID drivers that I can find for my laptop. I installed different versions of the IRST program, tried deleting the SSD volume, formatting it, etc. The fixes people talk about in other threads don't work for me because my programs, BIOS, etc seem to be missing options. Is RAID my problem?
Here are some pictures of my OS:
Installed programs:
Drives/Volumes:
ExpressCache:
Intel Rapid Storage Technology:
Just rechecked BIOS settings for the 20th time and the only SATA configuration option is AHCI, and there are no extra options in the BIOS regarding either of the Intel IRSTs

I have an ASUS VivoBook X200CA that is running a Windows 8.1 Upgrade. For about 5 months, this laptop has been running perfectly without any problems and I have managed to reset the computer many times due to certain errors and problems that have arisen from software and hardware compatibility.
Recently, I went to reset my laptop, it restarted and then it took me to the WinRE screen. I went into Troubleshooting > Advanced Options and I clicked on the Reset option. It then took me through each of the various warnings and making sure that my data was backed up and then, once I had clicked on the "Reset" button, it hung for a bit and then said "Reset has failed - Required Partition is Missing".

Windows 8 installation. Apparently, my PC now randomly decides not to boot properly either from sleep or hibernation. It will go into sleep just fine (though managing to keep it sleeping for more than 5 seconds has been a chore itself), but sometimes it won't be able to come back from sleep properly: it will either black screen on me (very uncommon), or it will keep restarting several times, until either the "Automatic Recovery" pops up, or I manually reset it.
In all my years working with computers, I haven't seen anything like this :/ Services look fine, running apps also look fine, no virus found on a complete check of all almost 10TB of data...
Right now, I'm just about ready to drop the whole thing and go back to Windows 7.

Windows 8.1 ... When I close lid of my laptop and open it again the screen is black. Nothing works to get it out of this. I have power options set to "Do nothing" for both On battery and Plugged in.
So I press power button which sends the laptop to Sleep. Then I press it again to wake it up. And this is when I see the BSOD and laptop restarts.
In minidump I see athwnx.sys and ntoskrnl.exe reported.
athwnx.sys is driver for Dell Wireless 1515 minicard (Wifi and BT). Current driver is from Microsoft, version 3.0.1.155, dated 03/05/2013.

Asus Vivobook. It was running fine last night, but today it was a bit slow to respond. I eventually restarted it and it told me I have disk problems. Now I'm stuck on a black screen with the Asus logo that reads "Repairing disk errors. This might take over an hour to complete."
It's been this way for multiple hours now. I'm going to leave it overnight and hope it repairs, but, if it doesn't, is there anyway to recover my files? I have some important stuff backed up online, but I haven't backed up in a bit over a month and I don't want to lose my files. Most forums tell me to reinstall Windows 8? Would that make me lose my files, though, and how can I do that if I can't get past this error page?

Since upgrading from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 the computer is not always waking up from sleep and hangs.
The only solution I have found is to turn off the power and reboot.
The wait cursor shows and the computer will not respond to any keys such as Ctrl Alt Delete or the Windows Key.

I had a problem a few months ago on Windows 8.1 I was unable to solve so I reinstalled windows 8 and was able to put my computer to sleep and wake again. Upon re-updating to Windows 8.1 I once again have the problem of a crash when trying to come out of sleep.
I tried Windows 8.1 again because of hardware changes that allowed me to uninstall a few outdated drivers, but that did not fix the problem. What may be causing it to crash when trying to wake?

I'm getting no sound after resuming from S1 sleep mode in Windows 8 and the only way to fix this is to either physically unplug the audio cable and plug it back in or restart the computer. I tried the audio troubleshooter and it could not find any problems and there is nothing to fix. I need to reconnect the audio cable every time the computer wakes up from sleep unless I restart the computer. I have an EVGA X58 motherboard with a Realtek ALC889 audio chip. I'm using the latest R2.70 audio driver from EVGA which is the same version as on the Realtek website.

The following is the best way I can describe whats wrong with my system.
1) Boots up normally, use laptop normally for work, play, nothing is wrong at all
2) Put it to sleep either by power button, right-clicking windows button OR closing lid, and yes, it is Sleep
3) Laptop seems to go to 'sleep' state - the fan sound disappears quite quickly (5 seconds), and the power LED blinks - I've had laptops before and this is very very normal 'sleep' activity so i don't think anything is wrong here
4) 'Wake' laptop by either power button, or opening lid:
- power LED stops blinking and becomes a constant 'on', processor LED starts blinking like normal - at this point it looks like a normal wake
- after about 1-2 seconds, system POWERS DOWN, yes powers down - no sound, hard drive stops, no lights, for about 0.5 seconds
- system boots up again, taking the normal amount of time to power up, from fresh, ie, as if I have just shut down the computer, and started it up again.
5) enter Boot screen
6) sign in to Windows, and all my previous programs, windows, work, will be gone, but otherwise everything will work properly, just like if you started from a fresh boot up
When going to sleep, system will not 'sleep' but just go into a black screen with the power LED 'on' and no processor LED or any other light, fan still moves tho, and there is no way to fix it other than force restart. Fixed by installing latest Intel drivers for GPU
Tested solutions - disabling 'hybrid sleep', saying never hibernate, definitely checked that 'lid' and 'power button' actions are for sleep (not hibernate or anything else), cmd prompt > powercfg -h off, reinstalling all my display drivers to older versions, Windows troubleshooter (selecting power)

I have about a week experience (pulled out some hair) with windows 8/8.1, but I consider myself pretty comfortable with Windows in general.
When my Windows 8.1 laptop is in sleep mode, I can wake it with a mere touch of my external bluetooth k/b without any issues, as long as the lid is opened. If I close the lid, I can continue to use it as its connected to a big Samsung plasma tv. But if I let the laptop go to sleep (or put it to sleep myself thru the menu), I am unable to wake it back; I need to pull it out from a/v furniture, open the lid and press the power button.
Is this a Windows 8 thing, an Acer Aspire thing, or worse it can't be done? Able to wake from sleep their Windows 8 laptop w/closed lid?

So I have searched for answers, updated drivers the best I can and disabled certain things (such as setting the SSD to never sleep) yet I still have intermittent problems when waking my new build from sleep overnight.
I find it simply wakes and the network connection icon says disconnected and the whole thing is froze before it just powers down, loosing all the things I left open.
Here is a zip from win 8 file collector logs: download
(i7 pc, based on an Asus P8Z77-V LX with Intel SSD..)
Here is the log entry for restart just before extracting the logs:
"Event[2719]: Log Name: System
Source: EventLog

Keyword: Classic
User: N/A
User Name: N/A
Computer: ideal-server
Description:
The previous system shutdown at 15:01:00 on ?09/?02/?2013 was unexpected."
Not sure where to go from there as it froze without error??

When I first installed Windows 8 my system used to go to sleep after 30 minutes of inactivity and then resume on pressing any key. Recently, without any apparent changes to settings, it will not resume and the power button has to be actioned requiring a loggin. what setting controls all of this. I also am confused by difference between sleep and hibernate!

This is a strange issue that started happening to me a few weeks ago. On my laptop, I put the computer to sleep, then close the lid. To wake it up, I just open the lid. Recently, about 1/4 of the time I wake up my computer, the lock screen does not appear, but instead it seems that my computer crashes then restarts. I don't have any USB devices plugged into my laptop, just the power cord.

I took my computer to a computer repairs to get my fan fixed and when I got it back I found that my computer kept crashing when waking from sleep. It happens every time and is inconvenient as it just resets. It also takes longer to turn on, it has a black screen for a short amount of time, it was not like this before, I can put up with the added turning on time but I need to be able to sleep and wake my laptop without issues.

I am facing the issue that after waking my new Lenovo X240 (with 8.1 installed on SSD) from sleep mode it takes up to 50 seconds until the lock screen appears. After setting up Windows to bypass the lock screen altogether waking from sleep mode now only takes a couple of seconds, which is how I would expect it to be.
However, I would actually like to keep the lock screen for security reasons, but haven't figured out what could be the cause for this massive delay?!

Have attached the SF diagnostic zip.
My system is Windows 8.1, Samsung notebook, i7, 8gb RAM and 1tb hard-drive.
I updated the Intel Rapid Storage Driver but no improvement in situation of BSOD on waking up from sleep. Basically, the screen/desktop is visible and I can move the cursor and try to double click on programs, before getting the BSOD (collecting errors and restarting) screen.
I always do 'full shutdowns' /have disabled fast startup. Have also disabled some startup apps such as google updater and a couple others but the laptop is still taking around 3 minutes to boot with no HDD light activity for a couple of minutes (is this normal when fast startup is disabled???). Shut downs /entering sleep mode are swift.
On another note, Synaptics driver isn't installing and I was told that would work (for some reason) but that may not be relevant.

I've been having 3 different BSODs the last while. SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION, KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR, and SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED. The bug check codes are 0x1000007e or 0x0000003b for the system_service_exception.
My laptop is running windows 8.1, it is an Asus G46vw. I've updated my video drivers, both intel and nvidia. I've updated other drivers that i can find updates for. I've run memtest 86+ 5.01 on both sticks of ram individually, and they both pass multiple passes. I've also updated my Intel SSD to the newest firmware.
The crashes happen when the computer is waking up from both sleep and hibernate. They have been more frequent lately (4 crashes the last 9 days). I've attached the files from sf diagnostic tool.
