Apr 5, 2013
i Am trying to build my first PC with a Asus P8Z68M motherboard I have managed to get it all going but when I start it up its says - Using PCIE Gen 2 - cant find any device. What does this mean? Also, why does the PC beep at me whilst booting up?

In the device manager, under memory technology devices, I have Realtek PCIE CardReader Properties displayed twice. The two locations are: PCI bus 2, device 0, function 0; and PCI bus 2, device 0, function 1. Dell offered a driver update for the cardreader which I installed. Only 1 of these 2 actually updated.
My question is do I need to update both or is one enough?

I have a newly home built MSI AM1i motherboard and have it running fine with Windows 8.1. I am trying to expand the number of SATA ports it has (comes with only 2). The mobo has a mini-PCIe card slot.
I purchased a AsMedia 106x, 2-port, mini-PCIe card (had to use a ribbon-cable extender to get it connected).
That all appears to be fine. I struggled a bit with drivers, but eventually found a Windows 7 AsMedia 106x driver set. Loaded that, seems ok.
Problem: When I go to device mgr, it does not see the added 2-ports. When I first boot up, during the black-screen phase, it does report that the AsMedia device is loading and will actually find/name a hard drive that I attach to one of the new ports. It then almost looks like it will load windows, give the nice little blue windows 8 flag and just sits there. I can hear a drive cycle every 2-3 seconds, but nothing.
I eventually have to hit the power button to shut down. If I disconnect the drive added to the new card, it will start up. The AsMedia device looks to load during a black-screen phase, but reports no device found, and then loads Win 8 Correctly. When I get in, again, no SATA ports shown for the new device.

Last part of the message, (Device Descriptor Request Failed). I get this, in Device Manager, and I have searched for an answer on the net. Also it is a Code 43. I went through my laptop, with an HP Technician this morning, I might add at a cost of 5p/minute, for 30 odd minutes. He has said that because I had gone over to Windows 8.1 and the recovery discs I made will not load, to put back in Windows 8. I have to send the laptop back for re-installing the OS, because Windows 8.1 do not have the update for my problem. Also the R.H. USB socket has a failure ID:0GAPTK-6T7716-MFPWWK-8D1Q03. I personally think that this is all what the problem is. a duff USB. Is this a cop-out???
Does Windows 8.1 having driver WHQL problems?
I only found out the problem with the usb when I tried to download a Mobi file to a Kindle for my wife. The other usb's work OK.

I have never used 'Bluetooth' before. I want to transfer a file between my laptop and Android tablet. I turned Bluetooth 'on' (which I have installed the latest driver) on my Windows 8.1 laptop. I turned Bluetooth 'on' on my Android 4.1.1 tablet. I had my laptop search for 'Bluetooth' devices, but my tablet is never found. Is there something I am doing wrong?

How can I find express cache drivers for Windows 8.1 ? I've been searching for long time but cannot find any. I assume it's already installed with Windows or what? I just want to use my SSD(24GB) as an express cache. I have an Ideapad y410p.
Sometimes my SSD disappears like unplugged from the system or shutdown itself, why this is happening?

I am unsure whether I should enable "Automatically get device drivers, apps, and info for new devices" when installing Windows 8 Pro?
What exactly will it do?
If I enable this, will Windows then automatically install software packages/drivers from the manufacturer, like for example the Logitech Setpoint software for their keyboards and mouse and similar software for other devices? I don't want or need that. Or will it behave like in Windows 7?
On my other PC with Windows 7 I see in Windows Update that there are a couple of optional updates, including that Logitech stuff, as well as some driver for a BenQ monitor I have and also nvidia video drivers. This kind of stuff I don't want or need installed automatically as important updates in Windows Update - so I am worried if enabling this automatic driver stuff in Windows 8 is different than Windows 7? Meaning that it will get installed secretly/automatically?
However, it's fine that Windows finds them so I can manually go and check if I want to install any of it.
The key is that the updates are optional in Windows 7, but I have seen a few people complain about Windows 8 installing stuff like video drivers and mouse drivers automatically.

I've installed Microsoft Windows 8.1 Version 6.3.9600 Build 9600 on my HP 430 Notebook PC with 1 GB RAM and Pentium CPU @ 2GHz 2 Cores.
Display drivers are not working properly (i.e., everything appears bigger and unclear), earlier I'd successfully updated the display drivers and made it work using Device Manager. making a backup of the drivers (may be in .inf format) from the installed drivers so that I don't have to update it every time I re-install it.

I'm running a custom build PC on which I clean installed a (legal) copy of Windows 8.1
My system works fine except it can not install drivers for ANYTHING non-standard. Keyboard, mouse, memory sticks, HDDs all work fine, however when I plug in my phone/tablet/camera etc via USB, it fails to install drivers and I can't use my device.
Here's what device manager looks like with my (android) phone plugged in
And when I select Update driver software, I get this error:

first off this is a new fresh install of windows 8 i had to download and install 8.1 via updates. This computer is fully updated.
It is an older computer but I only use it for my TV to store Movie/Videos
ASUS M3A78-EM
AMD Phenom 8450 @ 2.1ghz
2gb gskill ram
blueray drive
3tb seagate
2tb wd
kingston 120gb SSD
after a fresh install everything worked fine until i tried to connect to my local network the onboard NIC has an error (code 10) it is a Realtek PCIe GBE Family NIC. after finding this i uninstalled and went to Realteks website and got the newest windows 8 64bit drivers. ran the install and it updated the drivers... but the device still cannot start so i uninstalled again and picked the drivers manually and that didn't change the issue either.
So i checked the back of the computer and noticed that non of the activity lights were lighting up on the NIC so i pulled the ram and battery AND power cord and let it sit. (ive delt with a similar issue before where a NIC would stay asleep and not wake up) after a wait i turned it back on and noticed that i had an orange light glowing again on the NIC.
After setting up the bios i booted back into windows only to see that as SOON as the driver were automatically installed the lights in the back go out and of course..... the device cannot start error.....
At this point I cant think of anything else to do. I do have a wireless card in the pcie slot that works fine. could that cause the onboard not to work? or... am i Just SOL and this is just a Windows 8 issue? should i just go and buy a PCIe network card?

I am using Windows 8 Professional. I am using a Dell XPS 1510 and am using a PCI Express Realtek PCIe GBE Family Expresscard.
I have already downloaded the latest driver from Realtek from 09/26/12. I have ran Windows Updates. No matter what the Realtek PCIe GBE Family Local Connection loses internet connection.
This card worked fine for months in Windows 7 Pro. The card works fine in Windows 8 Safe Mode. However, when logged into Windows 8 in normal mode, the card will allow and have internet connection for 1 min 12 secs to 1 min 32 secs, at which point the internet connection drops. The wifi and internal NIC (10/100) connection work fine. I've changed the NIC binding order. I've disabled the internal NIC, and Bluetooth (just in case) in the BIOS. I've tried uninstalling the WiFi to force using the Realtek PCIe GBE Family card.
I have ran procmon in order to try to figure out what if any application runs within the 1 min 32 sec timeframe that may interrupt the Realtek PCIe GBE Family card and have uninstalled any suspected applications. I've tried disabling services one at a time to see if it makes a difference.
I have tried DHCP and Static IP addresses.
The problem seems to be something within Windows 8. Something with Windows 8 disables the Realtek PCIe GBE Family internet connectivity. I've tried everything to keep the connection alive, internet works fine, I get perfect gigabit level speeds up until the 1 min 12 secs to 1 min 32 secs then all I get is no network connectivity.
The Windows 8 Troubleshooter is useless. Even though it is setup with static IP it says it can't find the default gateway. The issue is not with the router, somehow not being compatible with Windows 8 or something else. The card worked fine with the same router in Windows 7 and the internal NIC card works with the router in Windows 8 so its not that the router has problems with Windows 8.
I've also already disabled the "Allow the computer to turn off this device" option in the cards Power Management tab (first thing I tried). I've set the Power Management options on the laptop to be set to Maximum Performance.
Everything else with the laptop in Windows 8 seems fine, only this PCI express card that enables gigabit connection is failing. Don't want to use the slower WiFi or 10/100 connection those are too slow for what I need.

I have purchased from a local electronics store, an after market HDD drive housing to enable me to use a surplus 450GB IDE hdd from a now defunct computer.
Once assembled I plugged it in ( it comes with its own power pack , and uses a USB cable to connect to the computer)
Windows 8 knows it is there and installed a driver called - USB to IDE bridge. there the problem starts
I am unable to see the drive in explorer or anything . either as a mass storage device or an external drive.
Do I have to register the drive or anything , and if so how - shouldnt Windows 8 do this automatically ?? I have another HDD ( more modern one ) and windows see's that straight away.

I recently bought a cheap USB Hub off eBay. I plugged it in and connected my devices and it always works.
However, about 75% of the time when Win 8 boots, I get about a dozen "USB connect/disconnect" sounds and a window that says "USB Device not recognized". (sometimes 3 or 4 of these windows)
I've searched for this issue but every post that I find provides a recommendation for a USB device that is not working. None of these suggestions applies because after all the boot noise, the hub and it's devices work. It just seems like Win 8 is having trouble recognizing the Hub but keeps trying and eventually succeeds.
The Hub is plugged into a USB 2 port with a scroll wheel mouse and a Dymo LabelWriter 400 connected to the hub.

No USB device seems to be getting detected on my machine when I plug in a flash drive or an external hdd I get the distinctive sound from my speakers that an USB device is plugged in but nothing is showing up in "My Computer". I went through the event logs and found that Windows is failing to load the USB device (check image in attachment logs.jpeg). Recently I installed iTunes, so I though it might be causing this problem but I uninstalled it even then the problem persists. I don't want to format my machine just because of this small problem. Is this a driver conflict ? How do I find out why windows is all of a sudden failing to load the USB devices ? I have uploaded a copy of the saved logs detailing this failure(logs.zip).

I have a Seagate GoFlex 1 Tb USB 3.0 drive. All worked good until a week or two ago. Now the drive will not be recognized when plugged into a USB 3.0 port, the error given is "Unknown USB Device (Device Failed Enumeration).
If I plug the GoFlex drive into a a USB 2.0 port, it works. I can plug USB 2.0 devices into the USB 3.0 port and they work. I just can't plug my USB 3.0 drive into a USB 3.0 port and get it to work.
I have tried uninstalling the Unknown USB Device in Device Manager. I've also uninstalled all other instances of it failing to be recognized.
My motherboard has a VIA VL805 USB controller. I've used the drivers on Gigabyte's site and I've used VIA's drivers, no difference. I have the latest BIOS for my motherboard.
The drive does not show up in Disk Management when plugged into a USB 3.0 port. This shouldn't be a surprise since the device is unknown in the Device Manager.
I thought the problem might be with the USB 3.0 cable or the GoFlex drive's USB interface. So I bought a new USB 3.0 docking station and...same problem. The new docking station also fails enumeration. Basically what it boils down to is a USB 3.0 storage device will not be recognized in a USB 3.0 port. But they work when plugged into a USB 2.0 port.

I have a strange problem: connecting a Canon Powershot G10 digital camera via USB 2.0 to my Win 8.1 laptop presents no problem (info pops up).
But: Using the same cable connected to my desktop PC, there is no reaction whatsoever. No device manager listing, no error message. The USB ports are all working perfectly with other devices (sticks, external hard drive, wireless mouse & keyboard). Moreover, until some weeks ago, the Canon camera was recognized normally.
Short of re-installing the whole USB controller

When I connect my DualShock 3 controller to my Windows 8.1 laptop it does not charge. I hear a beep, as in something was connected to the PC, then it seems to charge for a couple of seconds (lights flash on the controller) and then it stops. I am able to charge my phone and tablet so, it's just the DS3. It works fine on my Windows 7 computer, so it's not the controller.

I'm running Windows 8.1 on a SDD with a second HDD along side it. Inside the Device Manager I disabled my second HDD and rebooted my system.
Windows started as normal, but a few key windows programs have stopped working:
- Task Manager
- Device Manager (basically all control panel functions)
- Powershell (Command Prompt Works, but can't be opened with administrative rights)
The main problem is that I now can't enable my second HDD. Why the HDD is needed for these programs and how I can re-enable my HDD?

Recently my "PS to PC Converter" USB device, as shown in image was not recognized by my laptop. It was working fine as of yesterday, where I was playing FIFA with my friend. Then today when I plug it in, it says USB device not recognized even though I can still on the analog but the controller is not detected by the game. Other games that I use to play with controllers are also not detecting the device. I kept reinstalling the driver but still the same message. Restarting computer, turning it off for a few minutes did not solve my problem too. I'm pretty sure my USB ports are fine as my mouse, keyboard and hard drives are working in all of the USB ports.
EDIT: I check the Device Manager and found a yellow exclamation mark on Other Devices named "Unknown device", I check the properties and says Code 43 on the status. I Enable/Disable it, still the same message.
