Booting Win 8.1 Gives Black Screen With Flashing Cursor
Sep 15, 2014I had to reinstall the whole machine from scratch because old HDD has been playing up. This is what I did:
1. Imaged old (faulty) drive to new one - just because I needed some data out of it and the old one was very slow and freezing.
2. run the system with new imaged drive - all working except sometimes it was playing up, so I decided to upgrade to another drive with Windows 8.1 from Win7
3. have plugged in new HDD to SATA0 port and the imaged drive to port SATA2
4. installed Windows 8.1, copied data over, reinstalled applications and so on.
5. all working perfectly. Now every time I boot up the machine, I'm offered options if I want to boot to Windows 8.1 or Win7. No problem there.
6. Now I wanted to remove the imaged HDD from SATA2 port, so I did - and here comes the problem:
All I get now is the black screen with flashing cursor in top left corner. How is this possible ? When I plug the second drive in all works as before. I just have to remove the second drive. How can I do this? In the attached image you can see my drives from Windows 8.1 the Disk0 is the one I need to keep - that's a Windows 8.1 ( C: ) Disk1 (imaged HDD) is the one with Win7 on it and needs to be removed.
Laptop Goes To Black Screen After Booting Windows 8.1
Mar 1, 20143 days ago i turned of my computer and left it turned of over the night. Then when i tried to turn it back on again, i get the windows 8/8.1 boot logo, then when it dissapears i just get a black screen, however, i get the windows tone after a while indicating that the system is running, and that the only problem is that the screen is not displaying anything.
I have tried booting in safe-mode, that worked. But no matter what i changed (start-up programs and resolution) nothing worked. I have tried connecting another screen to my laptop, but that screen also displays the black color.
I should perhaps mention that my laptop originally came with Windows 7, but i upgraded it to Windows 8, and later on 8.1.

I can tell because I am able to reboot it while it's like this by:

The computer reboots just fine when I do this. Could it be a bad display driver perhaps? I have an AMD Radeon HD 7950 and am using the latest display drivers from AMD.

Feb 5, 2014Not sure what is going on right now. My computer was fine this morning before I left for work. My wife said it was working fine this morning, and then she left it for a while and when it came back, she was getting blank screens.
When I took a look, it was blank. I did a hard shutdown and after the welcome screen, got a black screen of death. After several reboots, it finally got to the tile screen, but froze there.
So, right now, I'm operating out of safe mode where things seem more normal. Anyway, here are the logs.

Dec 13, 2013I've recently built a new computer with Windows 8.1 and have been having some BSOD issues. Initially, I was getting a "Kernel_Security_Check_Failure" BSOD about once every day or two. After running MemTest+ (and confirming my RAM was fine), I started reading around online and began thinking it was a driver issue.
At the time, I did have a Belkin Wireless USB adapter which did not have an official driver for Windows 8.1. I had gotten it to work by installing it in Win 7 compatibility mode. So to try and solve the problem, I uninstalled that driver and software, and went to hard-line ethernet. The BSOD's went away for about two days until:
Yesterday I had another crash. Except this time I didn't get a BSOD, but instead just a hard crash to black. When I rebooted I ran the Driver Verifier (after reading about it online), and then did a restart. When it booted back up, it started saying I had a "driver_verifier_detected_violation" BSOD appear, which was pointing to "nvlddmkm.sys". This looks like be some sort of Nvidia driver. I had to boot in safe mode to get back in and turn off driver verifier.

Dec 22, 2013My computer randomly shutdowns when I use it for a while maybe 2hrs or 3, reboots by itselfs and windows cannot boot back, getting a black screen and nothing happens, So i manually turn it off and turn it on again to make it work. Sometimes it doesn't even want to work, black screen after multiple reboots So i need to syster restore it, sometimes that also doesn't work and i need to reset it completely.
At first i thought it was the new drivers i installed for my nvidea geforce gt640, the 331 version. I heard it was making pcs crash like mine does, so i downgraded the driver to 306 and it works for longer but the crash happened once again after a while, and after a windows 8 reset (deleted everything and reinstalled by itself). So this is a fresh Windows 8 i believe but still does crash.
After the crash that happened tonight, i restarted my pc and realised one of my fan in my pc is going extremely fast at random times but not for long. I went closer to hear which one was doing that and it seems to be the fan on my video card, I also touched my card and its very HOTTTTTT close to burning my hand ".".
My pc has been cleaned yesterday by my step dad, had lots of dust, even in the video cards fan, but now is clean and still overheating. Using a 350W PS which i heard is not really good and that i should upgrade really soon.
CPU Temp is fine, all fans are working properly, I believe my video card is broken or my PS not giving it enough power or something?
The auto reboots are annoying, making me have to restore every time and sometimes reset Windows 8. It seems to only happen when i do lots of stuff at once like mixing via audacity and having x2 perfect world clients up, plus radio streaming live.

Sep 15, 2014Okay so yesterday, I was using my laptop (Asus k45vm) and things started getting laggy. It got to the point were I had to restart it and after that was when everything went downhill. I loaded up to the Windows logo and the spinning dots, didn't get further than that. So I restarted again and mashed the f8 key (I later tested out all the keys), laptop scanned and "fixed" the problem. Still didn't work. So then in a fit of rage, I pulled the battery out, it loaded to the logo screen a few times after, but now right after the Asus boot screen, the screen goes black (without any cursor). F8 (and the rest) doesn't work anymore (no more boot screen). But if I wait for 5 min , a blue screen with:Recovery

So I created a bootable usb with win 8, Fat 32, uefi and all that , but it still goes to the black screen followed by the error. At this point I doubt that I can get into advanced boot options.
Even though I boot the laptop with the usb plugged in, it still says :You'll need to use the recovery tools on your installation media. If you don't have and installation media, contact your system admin or PC manufacturer.

Jan 13, 2014I've just upgraded from windows 8 to windows 8.1, via the Windows Store. Prior to upgrade i had no issues whatsoever with the windows 8, before the upgrade i ran the Windows 8.1 Upgrade Assistant. And found only 3 softwares to have conflict with the upgrade, these 3 are as followed: Apple QuickTime, iTunes and Bitdefender Total Security - Version 17.15.0.68. I uninstalled both of the apple software's and upgraded the Bitdefender to a version compatible with Windows 8.1.
I had no issues with the download & installation of windows 8.1, however the instant between windows loading screen and the switch to user log in screen is blank/black for a good 3 minutes, if not more. Normally after the shut down screen the computer would power off completely, however now my computer screen is blank/black and the computer is still powered on for about 10-15 minutes, I know that it is on as all the fans/HDD LED are active. This time fluctuates and I'm not sure why. I've checked with windows update and no updates are available, all of my softwares (and third party applications) are up to date. On Microsoft Community forum and so on, all i can say is that there are many others experiencing a issue only with a blinking cursor and their circumstances are different so i don't believe its related.
I've updated my BIOS to the current version and my display driver and chipset are up-to-date, all drivers offered on the asus website, i even installed the realtek sound driver which i wasn't using previously. Reset BIOS, removed battery for CMOS, removed all components 1-by-1, ran CHKDSK no problem found, only standard keyboard/mouse/display connected, no change whatsoever!
I've tried safe mode and its the same, only the transition to logging in and shutting down have improved slightly. Tried clean boot at the result was the same. Checked the WER and found a lot of this "DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE 0x0000009f". I've already run the SF diagnostic tool and will load the zip file here. I rather not do a clean install of windows 8 and I'm not sure if restoring my pc to windows 8 before the upgrade will resolve the issue if it is driver related.

Nov 24, 2013My system is old : MSI Neo2 Nforce3 + HD4650 Radeon AGP + 2 GB mem + AMD Athlon 3000+
However, I wanted to try Windows 8.1 Enterprise Evaluation for it and was able to install it successfully with 32 bit version (64 bit didn't work). I installed Radeon legacy AGP Hotfix 12.6 drivers that seem to work for the old AGP card giving Youtube HD playback! Not too shabby for a single core beast.
So I have been happy with the system performance (faster to boot than XP etc.).
However, I have encountered two problems that I haven't been able to resolve:
1 - Realtek Gigabit Ethernet (8111) fails to initialize the Internet on some boots, requiring enable/disable driver to make it work. I have installed newest drivers from Realtek website but no effect.
2 - When the system goes to sleep, it wakes up with black screen and no way to get picture back except resetting the computer. I have tried to change my MB BIOS setup (I have the latest BIOS installed) to disable S3 and use only S1 mode but to no avail. Black screen awaits in every wake up. I have also experienced once the driver_power_state_failure error..
So, I see there are many posts about black screens and sleep modes but I haven't found the solution for Nforce3 motherboard AGP setups yet.

Nov 12, 2013Okay so I haven't gotten a proper BSOD since the computer doesn't actually power down, the screen just goes black and the speakers play a buzzing sound. It doesn't happen too often and if it does it usually seems to be within a few hours of turning the computer on (I leave it running unless I go away for a day or so). Seems to me the problem could be just about anything from the PSU to the GPU to the software.

Mar 8, 2014There's this bugcheck that forces me to refresh install my Windows 8 installation. Everything was normal until I restarted my system and it takes longer time to boot. The screen stays black after boot logo disappearing, until I saw a BSOD.
Attached below is last and the only dump file generated while BSOD occured. I need to know what's the real cause so I can prevent it in the futures (this is like my third time to refresh install in less than a year...)
Note that I generated this diagnostic after refresh install so it might be irrelevant to crash dump attached...

Sep 16, 2013Windows 8.1 ... When I close lid of my laptop and open it again the screen is black. Nothing works to get it out of this. I have power options set to "Do nothing" for both On battery and Plugged in.
So I press power button which sends the laptop to Sleep. Then I press it again to wake it up. And this is when I see the BSOD and laptop restarts.
In minidump I see athwnx.sys and ntoskrnl.exe reported.
athwnx.sys is driver for Dell Wireless 1515 minicard (Wifi and BT). Current driver is from Microsoft, version 3.0.1.155, dated 03/05/2013.

Desktop Is Black After Booting Windows 8
Jul 15, 2013 I've got Windows 8 64 bit and I'm running it on a Gigabyte U2242 ultrabook on the max resolution 1 Yesterday, after booting up, I saw that the desktop is black, the icons are black/ invisible too, I can, however, see the taskbar.
On the other hand, the tile menu works just as intended.
The laptop has two video cards: Intel HD 4000 and a Geforce 650M, I've uninstalled the drivers for both under safe mode and reinstalled the latest ones.
I've read somewhere on the nvidia forums that the geforce driver can't be removed because v.304 comes with Windows 8. Is this true?
Computer Keeps Booting Into SysPrep
Sep 15, 2014My laptop was infected. So I used Malwarbytes and Hitman Pro to remove the infections. Then I updated it from Windows 8 to Win 8.1. After the upgrade finish, it rebooted and now only boots into SysPrep. I can't even boot into Safe Mode, I get an "installation needs to finish" error.
Also, once it logs into SysPrep, I log out of Administrator into my user account and use "net user administrator /active:no" command in Command Prompt and reboot, but still it boots into SysPrep.
I've also tried using msconfig and set it to Normal Boot, but again it restarts into SysPrep.
I'm assuming the Win 8.1 upgrade glitched out.
When Select Photos Tile On Screen Another Black Screen Appear With Blue Square Icon
Jul 10, 2014Just had this new laptop running windows 8 and its an Acer.When I select the photos tile on the screen it goes to another screen which is black with a blue square icon and underneath it tells me that there are no files or folders in this view.There are photos in my picture folder as I just put then in.But if I go to the other method and select the My picture folder the photos are there.

Everytime or almost everytime I click on an app or go to the desktop and try to get on IE 10 (desktop version), my screen flashes and goes black for a few seconds then returns me to the screen with the space needle, then I click on it and it signs me back in. When I try to use Google Chrome, the websites freeze up on me. I don't want to have to reinstall/reformat as I paid $40 for this for one, and secondly, I don't want to have to repurchase Office 2010 as my licenses ran out. I ran every update that comes up and restart, but this doesn't change this issue. . why it does this and any way to fix it without reformatting?

Windows 8 Booting But No Start Screen
Aug 27, 2014Toshiba laptop. My son tells me ever since he went on you tube, he has pictures coming up Like wallpaper, with a field to type in where he wants to go, like the address bar in IE.
This worked for a while, but now the computer will boot it shows - welcome Glenn and the circle is spinning, but it will not display the start page. It stays black.
BTW he is running win 8. After about 5 minutes I am able to hit alt-Ctrl- Del and I managed to bring up task manager.I found that the CPU usage is at 98%. I shutdown the windows defender module, and it dropped to 48%. After exiting task manager it still does not display the desktop.
After several tries it is now a little faster and I can get to task manager without a long wait, and the cpu usage is down to 10-20 % , but still no start page.
After the computer sits for a while it goes into standby, I know that because after I move the mouse, I will see the space needle picture. After I click on the picture, it goes back to black.
Since I cannot get to the desk top, I cannot run anything, so I don't know how to proceed.

Apr 27, 2014Although I have now configured W* to my liking, which is to boot up WITHOUT need for password, on the odd occasion, depending on which way I closed down, I am still asked for it.
If I want to ignore the request, I need to c/o restart, and it boots up without request.
When it open up with the coloured screen of half circles.
As I went through the correct/advised process of Unchecking need for password, I find it strange it can still happen.

Aug 25, 2014I've recently build my own computer with Windows 8, which turned out great at first. But after a day or two i've been experiencing seemingly random BSOD messages, and what triggers them. I've tried reinstalling Windows 8 and updating all drivers and installing all Windows updates, but after a short while the BSODs appear again.
I mainly get the BSOD when booting and they continue until i've tried a number of random troubleshooting options. Most of these options fail (including activating restore points) and the computer reboots with a new BSOD, and the next time into troubleshooting. The last couple of times it seems like Windows 8 will boot if i choose activate troubleshooting as a startup alternative.
At small periods of times i've also had troubles with computer going into a loop where it is turning on for a couple of seconds, then turning off, i did not get boot screen during this. I'm thinking this might be caused by some loose wiring which have been tightened, since i'm not having this trouble right now, but i thought i mention it anyway.
I've attached the BSOD data as instructed, with both tools. This includes only the files after my last install of Windows 8. My first install also experienced the 0x0000003b bug check code, but i don't have any more data than that.

- Randomly crashed one day. I believe it may have been waking from sleep mode when this happened. It cited:

- I've tried many recovery paths. BCDedit, bcdboot, fixboot, Windows 8 & 8.1 recovery media. For all of these I think I am either doing them wrongly or I get an error message that says it can't access/edit the bit where Windows 8.1 preview is.
- On a different drive I have a copy of Windows 8 that I used to clone to the other harddrive (now containing crashed 8.1 preview) over a year ago. They are unrelated I believe.
- There's a suspicious lack of Windows related folders on the D: drive containing the crashed Windows 8.1. D:windows doesn't exist and D:WINDOWS only contains one folder: "logs". The other folders such as "program files" are all locked.

Jan 19, 2014Everytime I boot my pc I get a MULTIPLE IRP_COMPLETE_REQUESTS BSOD on Windows 8.1. Upon rebooting (which takes quite a bit longer than the original boot) things work fine. From what I understand the causes of this BSOD vary quite a bit.
