Booting Up - Coloured Screen Of Half Circles
Apr 27, 2014
Although I have now configured W* to my liking, which is to boot up WITHOUT need for password, on the odd occasion, depending on which way I closed down, I am still asked for it.
If I want to ignore the request, I need to c/o restart, and it boots up without request.
When it open up with the coloured screen of half circles.
As I went through the correct/advised process of Unchecking need for password, I find it strange it can still happen.

A few weeks ago my start screen was suddenly different. Instead of the apps being visible across the whole screen it has been shrunk to fit only half the screen. I've had a kitten stepping all over my keyboard and this may or may not have to do with it. I've looked for a menu option to change it but can't find anything. I've tried just zooming out but it doesn't affect it. How can I make the start screen how it originally was?

Would really like for windows apps to open 50% view by default instead of forcing me to manually do this each time.
Edit: I'm talking about Metro apps, not everyday 3rd party programs that run on desktop version.

This just randomly happened today while I was moving around files on an external drive. This is what the first few rows of icons should look like, but it's like everything under the word "Start" was moved down and partially off the screen. I don't know how to get it back, or which process to attempt restarting (is the Start screen handled by the explorer.exe process?). Also, the right - click menu (which is usually on the bottom) is completely hidden, so I can't use any of that functionality.

I have a laptop where my LCD is broken on the left side, but the right side works fine. Is there a way I can change my display to only show on the right side? I've managed to make the display horizontally smaller, but I can't figure out how to change the center to the right side. This is annoying because I have to re-size every window every time I open it, and then I have to constantly scroll back and forth on web pages. I'd rather be able to maximize and have it only on the right side. See the attached picture to see what I'm talking about.

Toshiba laptop. My son tells me ever since he went on you tube, he has pictures coming up Like wallpaper, with a field to type in where he wants to go, like the address bar in IE.
This worked for a while, but now the computer will boot it shows - welcome Glenn and the circle is spinning, but it will not display the start page. It stays black.
BTW he is running win 8. After about 5 minutes I am able to hit alt-Ctrl- Del and I managed to bring up task manager.I found that the CPU usage is at 98%. I shutdown the windows defender module, and it dropped to 48%. After exiting task manager it still does not display the desktop.
After several tries it is now a little faster and I can get to task manager without a long wait, and the cpu usage is down to 10-20 % , but still no start page.
After the computer sits for a while it goes into standby, I know that because after I move the mouse, I will see the space needle picture. After I click on the picture, it goes back to black.
Since I cannot get to the desk top, I cannot run anything, so I don't know how to proceed.

I had to reinstall the whole machine from scratch because old HDD has been playing up. This is what I did:
1. Imaged old (faulty) drive to new one - just because I needed some data out of it and the old one was very slow and freezing.
2. run the system with new imaged drive - all working except sometimes it was playing up, so I decided to upgrade to another drive with Windows 8.1 from Win7
3. have plugged in new HDD to SATA0 port and the imaged drive to port SATA2
4. installed Windows 8.1, copied data over, reinstalled applications and so on.
5. all working perfectly. Now every time I boot up the machine, I'm offered options if I want to boot to Windows 8.1 or Win7. No problem there.
6. Now I wanted to remove the imaged HDD from SATA2 port, so I did - and here comes the problem:
All I get now is the black screen with flashing cursor in top left corner. How is this possible ? When I plug the second drive in all works as before. I just have to remove the second drive. How can I do this? In the attached image you can see my drives from Windows 8.1 the Disk0 is the one I need to keep - that's a Windows 8.1 ( C: ) Disk1 (imaged HDD) is the one with Win7 on it and needs to be removed.

3 days ago i turned of my computer and left it turned of over the night. Then when i tried to turn it back on again, i get the windows 8/8.1 boot logo, then when it dissapears i just get a black screen, however, i get the windows tone after a while indicating that the system is running, and that the only problem is that the screen is not displaying anything.
I have tried booting in safe-mode, that worked. But no matter what i changed (start-up programs and resolution) nothing worked. I have tried connecting another screen to my laptop, but that screen also displays the black color.
I should perhaps mention that my laptop originally came with Windows 7, but i upgraded it to Windows 8, and later on 8.1.

After sorting out my problem installing multiple Hard Drives and getting past that I am now faced with another problem, which is that no screen is displayed on start-up to allow selecting other drives to boot from.
I can select other drives to boot from if I boot up into the default drive and select "Change PC Settings" but that is very slow and allows mistakes if one is tired.
I think the reason for the problem is because I installed all the drives on their own separately (took out the other drives) and they are now all installed properly except for this problem.
I only need to boot from the default drive when I need to do something with that particular drive or to boot from "Windows 7 Ultimate" I tried to fix the problem with Drive Freshen (I think its called) but that didn't work.
Is there a way to fix this problem and have the screen that offers to allow booting from another drive added to the default drive, without doing a total re-install?
On a multi boot system it is the first screen to display before booting the OS, and shows all the installed Drives in boxes with their names (labels) on, so that you can choose which Drive to boot from..

There should be a way to do that because I dont want my roomate to see my files on the (local disk) which is what it's called right now.

I have a new HP Pavilion 15 e073sa laptop with a 750Gb HD. I would like to mimic my Win7HP setup on my old Toshiba laptop which is to partition the C drive to around 150Gb and have the rest as a data partition. (Currently my new HP's C drive has only 30Gb used).
Looking at Windows' inbuilt shrink volume tool, it will only let me shrink the HP C drive to half the size (around 348Gb) due to immovable system files. This tool has a note to see the defragmentation report for more details though I can't discover more...
So: Using inbuilt Windows tool, can I shrink my C drive, then shrink the shrunken C drive again (and again?) to achieve my desired 150Gb C drive? (and of course then consolidate the resulting empty spaces into one partition)
Or is it better to go for a 3rd party software solution? I have emailed the support team at Minitool Partition Wizard and they tell me there is no difference between installing their program onto my C Drive to manipulate it, and using a bootable CD to resize and partition my drive, - thought they say that the change will be irreversible?

I just got an Asus Zenbook UX31A.
It has a 128 GB of SSD. but when I went to Desktop > File Explorer > Desktop > Computer.
Where it says Hard Disk Drives (1), it says that I have 65.5 GB free of 93.9 GB.
I bought this laptop cause it has a 128 GB SSD, and I know that I won't get all 128 GB of space, but the fact that HALF is already taking space?!
How can I find out what it is, and how do I remove it?!

One of the biggest complaints about the Windows 8 start menu/screen, is the fact that it takes up the whole screen, unnecessarily blocking everything a desktop user is currently working on.
I've been playing around with Windows 8.1 Preview, and am getting used to snapping the start screen to the left side, like you can with metro apps, using Win+Arrow.
Because Windows 8 treats the Desktop like an app, it can be displayed on the right half of the screen, while the start menu is snapped to the left half of the screen.
So I'm just wondering whether there's a way to force the start screen to always open at half the fullscreen size? In other words, always snapped to the size.
This would be a great way to meet the fullscreen-start-menu-haters half-way.

I have a strange problem in that my network speed to my laptop appears to be halved. I have a 152Mb/s service which comes through on my xbox one being on a gigabit network. My laptop is limited to 100Mb/s due to the speed of the network card.
The speed I obtain however, is ~40Mb/s through normal use, via ethernet cable or wireless. But, when I use safe mode with networking, the speed becomes ~90Mb/s as I would expect.
I have gone into Safe Mode and taken pictures of the then currently running processes and tasks. I tried comparing to the processes running on a regular use and decided to end specific tasks that didn't match. However, I was unable to solve the problem and determine which program (if it is one) that is causing this slow down.

My PC
CPU: i7 2700K
MoBo: Gigabyte Z77X-UD5H
GPU: Gigabyte GTX 670
Surround Sound Receiver: Onkyo 515
OS: Windows 8.1 Pro
My pc has been running great for about two years now, but starting a couple weeks ago I have been noticing an occasional audio "hiccup" once or twice per hour where everything seems to lag out for a half-second. If a computer could fart it would sound like this stutter I am talking about.
This audio stutter occurs whether i am listening to music, watching videos, or playing games. I have since performed a clean re-install of windows 8.1, and run the system file checker to verify the integrity of my OS files, but the problem persists. I have tried two of the most recent Nvidia drivers (including a beta) for the GTX 670, and will try reverting back to older drivers next.
I don't believe it to be a problem with the receiver because I have tested it on other inputs (TV, PS3) and the problem is not seen (heard) there.

I'm having major issues with my GPU while playing games on my MSI GT60 0ND. I've tried several different drivers, from the one that came with the computer when I bought it, the one I could download from MSI's own webpage, to the newest from Nvidia. I was wondering whether you could see something in the dump files that could indicate the source of the problem.
The problem started about a year after the buy (which coincidentally was when the warranty ran out). It started out with a few BSOD's from time to time (video_tdr_failure - nvlddmkm.sys), and has now progressed to the point where the computer will BSOD shortly after playing. The problem started after I upgraded to Windows 8.1, but still persists now that I've downgraded back to 8, although it seemed like the problem was gone for a few days. The last BSOD happened while playing Hearthstone, after about half an hour of playing (which is longer than it usually takes).
Is this a software-related problem, or is the GPU simply shot?

When I open a .pdf it uses the Reader app. I have no problem with that except when I am on a website it opens the pdf in a new half window. Meaning the original site and the .pdf each are in their own side by side window. Yes I can drag it to full but everything I read said it should open full. Or at least that's how I would like it.
I have not found any settings to make it always open full. I should say that if I just open the Reader app on its own it does open full screen.

In Advanced Startup there is the option to boot from a removable device.
It has an icon for a usb drive & a disk, which I assume means CD or DVD.
The question is, is this option the same as setting the boot order in the BIOS ?
I tried it just to test it & when restarting, the process hesitated like it was looking for a removable device. I had no device inserted.
Then my computer continued to boot like always. I was wondering if choosing this option would be a one time event or if it would change the boot order permanently ?

I'd like a feature in a Bios to enable an ISO on the HDD to be a selectable boot device.
Some MB's have a small Internet Browser built in to the BIOS which can be activated at boot time before loading the OS.
Perhaps even if loading a file system into the BIOS wasn't possible perhaps by selecting this type of option in the BIOS Windows could issue a prompt for the ISO once it could read the file system before loading the rest of its code.

My Windows 8 desktop PC was working fine up until yesterday when it wouldn't recognize my external dvd drive for some reason. I tried some troubleshooting steps such as deleting the upper and lower filters in the registry editor and everything was fine until I rebooted my PC.
Upon rebooting, I noticed an extremely long boot time (about 10-15 mins) which I found highly unusual but the computer worked fine until I rebooted it a 2nd time. The 2nd time after rebooting it, it was stuck at the HP loading screen so I left it on overnight to see if it would take longer to boot but to my surprise, it was still stuck at the loading screen when I woke up this morning!
Here are some specs:
OS: Pre-installed Windows 8
Model: Hp Pavillion p7-1459
All drivers should be up to date because I frequently run windows update.

I've made some configuration error but I can't remember what. I have a SD card with recovery drive on it which has been sat in my card reader for ever. Yesterday (I'm not sure if this is related) I was trying to make a Windows to go drive using 8.1 Enterprise Preview in a VirtualBox VM. This was to be on another USB key and didn't work as it was incompatible. This key is not in the machine.
Anyhow now when I restart I always boot to the SD card recovery drive. I have to take it out to boot normally.
BIOS shows C:/ top of boot order and msinfo shows C:Windows is the default (and only) boot entry.

Just installed Win 8 on a new hard drive. "Almost" everything works fine. However my scanner, colorimeter and a couple programs are not compatible. I do not need to use the incompatible hardware/software very often. But when I do, I would like to boot the computer into XP and use them. I've done some research on this topic. Partitioning the Win 8 primary drive does not appear to be an issue. But, can I dual boot 2 operating systems if Win 8 is now the primary and only OS on the HD?
