Toshiba laptop. My son tells me ever since he went on you tube, he has pictures coming up Like wallpaper, with a field to type in where he wants to go, like the address bar in IE.
This worked for a while, but now the computer will boot it shows - welcome Glenn and the circle is spinning, but it will not display the start page. It stays black.
BTW he is running win 8. After about 5 minutes I am able to hit alt-Ctrl- Del and I managed to bring up task manager.I found that the CPU usage is at 98%. I shutdown the windows defender module, and it dropped to 48%. After exiting task manager it still does not display the desktop.
After several tries it is now a little faster and I can get to task manager without a long wait, and the cpu usage is down to 10-20 % , but still no start page.
After the computer sits for a while it goes into standby, I know that because after I move the mouse, I will see the space needle picture. After I click on the picture, it goes back to black.
Since I cannot get to the desk top, I cannot run anything, so I don't know how to proceed.
3 days ago i turned of my computer and left it turned of over the night. Then when i tried to turn it back on again, i get the windows 8/8.1 boot logo, then when it dissapears i just get a black screen, however, i get the windows tone after a while indicating that the system is running, and that the only problem is that the screen is not displaying anything.
I have tried booting in safe-mode, that worked. But no matter what i changed (start-up programs and resolution) nothing worked. I have tried connecting another screen to my laptop, but that screen also displays the black color.
I should perhaps mention that my laptop originally came with Windows 7, but i upgraded it to Windows 8, and later on 8.1.

Although I have now configured W* to my liking, which is to boot up WITHOUT need for password, on the odd occasion, depending on which way I closed down, I am still asked for it.
If I want to ignore the request, I need to c/o restart, and it boots up without request.
When it open up with the coloured screen of half circles.
As I went through the correct/advised process of Unchecking need for password, I find it strange it can still happen.
I had to reinstall the whole machine from scratch because old HDD has been playing up. This is what I did:
1. Imaged old (faulty) drive to new one - just because I needed some data out of it and the old one was very slow and freezing. 2. run the system with new imaged drive - all working except sometimes it was playing up, so I decided to upgrade to another drive with Windows 8.1 from Win7 3. have plugged in new HDD to SATA0 port and the imaged drive to port SATA2 4. installed Windows 8.1, copied data over, reinstalled applications and so on. 5. all working perfectly. Now every time I boot up the machine, I'm offered options if I want to boot to Windows 8.1 or Win7. No problem there. 6. Now I wanted to remove the imaged HDD from SATA2 port, so I did - and here comes the problem:
All I get now is the black screen with flashing cursor in top left corner. How is this possible ? When I plug the second drive in all works as before. I just have to remove the second drive. How can I do this? In the attached image you can see my drives from Windows 8.1 the Disk0 is the one I need to keep - that's a Windows 8.1 ( C: ) Disk1 (imaged HDD) is the one with Win7 on it and needs to be removed.
After sorting out my problem installing multiple Hard Drives and getting past that I am now faced with another problem, which is that no screen is displayed on start-up to allow selecting other drives to boot from.
I can select other drives to boot from if I boot up into the default drive and select "Change PC Settings" but that is very slow and allows mistakes if one is tired.
I think the reason for the problem is because I installed all the drives on their own separately (took out the other drives) and they are now all installed properly except for this problem.
I only need to boot from the default drive when I need to do something with that particular drive or to boot from "Windows 7 Ultimate" I tried to fix the problem with Drive Freshen (I think its called) but that didn't work.
Is there a way to fix this problem and have the screen that offers to allow booting from another drive added to the default drive, without doing a total re-install?
On a multi boot system it is the first screen to display before booting the OS, and shows all the installed Drives in boxes with their names (labels) on, so that you can choose which Drive to boot from..
In Windows 8.1 do the on screen notifications only show on the Start screen?
I'm talking about the big ones I see with the black bar, such as low battery warning.
Twice I've been on the desktop and I never got a low battery warning. To test I made sure I was on the Start screen and sure enough the warning popped up. Also, when I switched over to the desktop the battery icon showed the exclamation point where I don't think it ever did when always on the desktop.
I've tried just about everything, but can't seem to find a setting to stop this action. The screen on my laptop (Sony Flip 15A, intel4400/geforce735) seems to increase and decrease in brightness between screens. It's rather annoying not just because of the change, but also because it takes several seconds to occur and it occurs in discrete steps. I'm running the latest drivers from both intel and nvidia. I've tried turning off adaptive brightness and disabling the sensor service, and all effects (fade in, UAC, etc) have been turned off. A video of the condition is shown below:
(Vimeo was taking forever to process)
It even happen when no programs are opening/closing - for example, if I view a dark background web page and then a lighter background, the brightness shifts. I can't imagine how awful this will be in photoshop.
As I understand it, when I it the Windows key or mouse-click lower left while in the desktop, it is supposed to take me to the Start Screen. Indeed, it did work this way for some time. However, now, when I do either, it takes me to the Apps Screen and I have to do something (one of several) to switch to the Start Screen. Once there, if I hit Windows key or click lower left repeatedly, it goes Start Screen -> Apps Screen -> Desktop -> Apps Screen -> Desktop, etc. I think this is wrong. It is certainly not what I want; but my searching has not run across any other mention of this behavior. I don't want it to go to the Apps Screen when I hit Windows key or click in lower left. I only want to go there if I specifically do something to get there from the Start screen. (E.g., little arrow, Ctrl-Tab) How do I get back to the Start Screen being the default choice between these two?
The behavior changed some time after I upgraded to Windows 8.1; but I am not sure if it was immediately after. I suspect not. I've only had the computer for a week, so I am still becoming accustomed to Windows 8. (Coming from XP and 7 and having read a lot of negative comments, I was expecting that I would hate Windows 8. As it turns out, I don't understand the presumed problems. The functionality of Windows 7 is still there. The Start Screen is actually nicer than the Start button
I have two Windows 8 installs, one on my desktop HDD, and another on my laptop's. My laptop broke, so i took the HDD and hooked it up to the extra SATA on my desktop for extra storage. For one reason or another, my desktop install decided to stop working, and I couldn't find the disk I used to upgrade from Windows 8 to 8.1 so I could refresh/restore it. I went to boot to my laptop install to use it for a while (as safe mode wouldnt work on my desktop install anyways) and that worked for a few days, but now the start screen freezes and I have to open task manager and move it to my other screen with Win+Shift+left, and end explorer.exe. Of course, since that doesnt work, I cant use the create a recovery disc utility.
I was wondering what if any customization's can be made to the start screen. I know about pin/unpin and larger/smaller but any ways to update the background image, or maybe add shortcuts that don't appear in the actual "All Programs" listing?
I want to ask about start screen, here the screenshot.
The icons changes like box show in the screenshot. The last thing I remember before it's happen is, I installed all the font that I copied from other computer using windows 7.
When i start up the system... nothing happens ... its just blank screen no words like...pres F2 for bios options etc. Just blank idk what happened it just happen like that after i resumed the system from hibernate ....
I tried removing battery and re starting still like that. The light indicators lights up in processing ... power leds both have lights ....
Any way to add an app to the start screen, but I want to add it to the all apps view screen, not the main start screen in Windows 8.1 this i know how to do, it's pin to start screen.
What happened is an installed program does not show up in the ALL Apps view of the Start Screen. Is there a way to add it there? I only find info on how to add it to the main start screen, not in all apps view.
So basically, I was just messing around in file explorer trying to view hidden files and I done something, now most the start menu tiles are gone. I have tried a system restore with no succes. The files are not in the start folder either. I checked.
From time to time, I like to go to the Start Screen on Windows 8 and type in "uninstall" and want to go to the setting "uninstall a program." Unfortunately, it's extra steps, as I have to click "settings" on the right. In Windows 7, all I had to do was Start key + type "uninstall" and it would pop up, ready for me to hit enter.
Can I include certain settings in the search for applications, or do I need to use Windows Key + W to open "settings search" every time?
After start-up and when I click on the desktop tile, my windows 8.1 HP Envy laptop flickers between the Start up screen with all the tiles to the desktop then to a blue screen then back to the Start up Screen with all the tile and so on.
Can't seem to get off that merry go-round. HP Tech support has me hitting the F11 key to get me to recovery manager so I can back up my files.
My win 8.1 pops out the Start menu bar (dunno what it's officially called but it is a vertical bar with Search, Share, Start, Device, and Setting) when I scroll the right edge of my touchpad (Dell inspiron), and if I tap on the mouse it flips right to the Start screen. I see Microsoft is really doing everything they can to get the users to the Start screen. But this is really annoying because I have no business in the Start screen, unfortunately. i never go there and never will.
I have a weird problem on my windows 8.1 start screen. When I right mouse click on app nothing happens. This way I can't rearrange any apps, can't add any of them to start screen to, nothing.. I can only open them. There is no menu after right clicking on any icon, there is no menu after clicking empty space surrounding icons.
I installed win 8 about 3 months ago. At the first month everything was working great and i was satisfied . But somehow, the apps on the start screen stopped working . I mean, I click them and they wont open . And ONLY when I hit the store app , there's that startup screen of the store (you know , that animation when u enter the app) and then crash).
I installed win 8 32 bit from this site and download :
I am getting quite used to the start screen on Windows 8 (as opposed to a start menu (?) - this change in nomenclature is sure to confuse users...)
I followed the tip on organizing into groups - quite useful.
However, once I have my start screen organized the way I like, I find that within groups icons tend to 'shift' positions randomly - which is irritating.
Any way to 'lock' them so once they are in position - one would think MS would have thought of that already.
Noticed something interesting - I am on a dual monitor set-up and when I open the start screen on a different monitor the organization of the start screen changes. Maybe that is why it is not an option (?) ...
I am using Win 8.1 on my HP Desktop computer. I have my settings to Open to the Start Screen. However, whenever I open a Windows 8 App (like Mail, People, Games etc.) when I close them it automatically reverts me to the Desktop (Even though I was on the Start Screen when I opened it.) How can I get it to stay on the Start Screen when closing a Win 8 app?
This is rather ironic. Most people complain about booting to the new Start page and want to boot the the Desktop. I would rather boot the new Start page but my new Asus Windows 8 computer boots to the start page initially but after about three seconds automatically goes to the desktop.
Pc was running fine last night, woke up this morning and powered on pc. Windows 8 boot to the start/lock screen and does nothing more.
Some info keyboard and mouse don't work, keyboard num lock lights up but you can't turn off. Only change to pc was done 4 days ago when i brought 2 samsung 830 ssd drives and I installed a fresh copy of windows 8.
When pressing the power button pc boots down as it should (i dont have to hold the power button for a forced shutdown)
I turn on my laptop and I get my welcome screen. I type in my password to get to my start screen. But then it freezes. I can't click to access my start screen or any other tabs I have nor can I scoll from left to right. It just freezes. The only thing I can do is press ctrl-alt-del to shut down my laptop. I try again and the same thing happens. I get stuck on my start screen and can't do anything.
I have a problem I can not see more in the icon bar of the start screen of my windows 8.1 tried to explain to a previous restore point but without result ..... I do not want to reformat everything ...
The Tiles on my Windows 8 Start Screen are suddenly showing annoying thick border when I move the cursor over them, so is the user name in the top right corner. How can I stop this?
