View 6 RepliesI have upgraded to Windows 8.1 and have had trouble opening the default Windows apps. So I removed the news app. Now I am trying to reinstall it with Powershell. How can I do this? I don't have an account with Microsoft and don't want to create one just for this. I don't see it listed when I type Get-AppxPackage -AllUsers
View 9 Replies View RelatedI don't appear to be able to get videos working direct from 8.1 metro apps.
If I run videos/live streaming from within my browser everything works fine but from within metro, all I get is purple coloured dots going across the screen. I would assume that this could be a buffering issue but I might be wrong?
All add-ons - flash/java & silverlight as far as I can tell are up-to-date. The most likely problems are:
1. slow broadband (2 to 3 mbps) but from within the desktop, youtube etc works without any buffering issues.
2. I have Avast installed and I did read about problems with TV-Catch Up and I did read about the anti-virus plug in causing sites not to work. I have disabled it from within Firefox but TvCatchUp works whether its on or off from within the desktop browser but no luck direct from the app.
Everything worked fine from within Win 8 apps but not 8.1!
Since yesterday I noticed that the Bing News app crashes after I click on it. When I click on it, there's the normal animation of the tile flipping over and taking over the screen with the news icon in the middle. However, after 2 seconds the app crashes and brings me back to the Metro UI. I can still see the app open in the apps bar on the right but clicking on it keeps the app crashing. The Live tile is working properly but after I reinstalled the app (which didn't resolve the problem) it doesn't work anymore and there is no option to enable Live tile when right-clicking the app.
I didn't install any new drivers, software or updates (except for the Definition update for Windows Defender). All the other apps are working properly. Doing an SFC /scannow didn't find any integrity violations.
My specs:
Windows 8 Pro with Media Center 64x (don't want to install 8.1 just yet)
GTX 660Ti
i5-3570K
8 GB RAM
Here's the log of the error I found in the Events log:

After yesterday's Windows 8.1 Update everything else is working well but the Bing News App has become unusable. Cold started or restored from Taskbar when suspended, the app allows me to browse news only a few seconds, then suddenly suspends and returns me back to desktop. See the video:
I've done everything I know in my efforts to get News App working (everything here except not contacted the publisher, Bing (Microsoft)).
Since the latest Bing News app update came out, that can sync your settings across devices, mine wants to crash shortly after starting it. And this happens on multiple machines. I have managed to get into settings and turn off the sync of settings, turn off reading offline, and still no luck. It crashes every time. This even happens on a machine that just had Windows 8.1 completely reinstalled on it, and on my surface pro tablet which has had windows 8.1 on it for a while.
The following is in the application event log:

I have 4 Windows 8.1 systems and the Bing News app crashes after a few seconds to a minute on all four. It used to work fine so obviously, the settings (which are synced by OneDrive) must be corrupted.
Is there any way to clear the app settings? I tried uninstalling, rebooting, installing and that didn't work.
I tried turning off sync on all 4 machines, uninstalling the app, deleting sync data using the web, rebooting, and reinstalling but the settings just come back!
I can't seem to turn on live tile for my weather app. When I right click on it, there is no option at the bottom of the screen to turn it on.
Compared to the photos app, it is currently running live tile by default, and when I right click on it, I can toggle live tile on and off.
Is there something special I need to do with the weather app to activate live tile?
We are deploying several hundred win 8.1 enterprise tablets and I'd like to set the default location to our local city when users first sign in. I can't find any information on the internet about how to do this programmaticly or via the registry (or even better via group policy)
Where the weather app location / city data is stored in the registry or in an ini file or something somewhere that I can modify via a script?
Using 8.1 my weather live tile does not work if I have the option set to Fahrenheit. Once I set it to Celsius the live tile works just fine.
I tried installing the app again with no change. I really want it to display in F
My weather app keeps telling me the conditions & forecast for Helena, Montana. I am sure it is a wonderful place, and I am thrilled to know it is now 32 degrees F outside, however I live in New Jersey. I cannot find a "change location" function in its settings. Where does the weather app get its location info from, and how can I correct it?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have The Weather app permissions set to allow it to display the weather on the lock screen. This has been working fine for some time -- up until now.
Now it only shows alerts, not the temperature.
About three days ago, all new style apps stopped working. I click on the tile, get a deep blue screen, and nothing else. On the left side of the screen, I can see the app as if it is working (just the name of the app, not content), so I can close the window and get back to desktop. The same applies to the STORE app. The only tiles that work, are the links to desktop applications, which open correctly on the desktop. The fault also affects all windows system apps. For example if I search on the start screen for "windows update", I can access "Windows update" as it just opens a window on the desktop, but if I click on "Windows update settings" nothing happens. The same is true with all windows system apps that open in the new start screen system.
I've uninstalled two Microsoft updates that were installed over the past three days, no change. I uninstalled AVAST, no change, so I reinstalled it! I tried restoring the system, but found that I had only one restore, and that was corrupted. Very strange. Without access to many windows system apps, the computer is really limited. The desktop seems to be working OK. I can't refresh the PC, as firstly it is a system app that runs from the start screen, and secondly because I upgraded from win 8 to 8.1 online, this can't be done anyway, as I don't have a disc. I'm really trying to avoid reinstalling windows 8!
(Pavilion dv6, i7 processor, 6GB ram, originally win7, then I upgraded to win 8 and now 8.1. I've been running 8.1 for some months without problems, just occasionally on start-up from sleep, I get "error in non-cached memory" BSOD, and the system restarts.)
I have a Windows 8.1 and a problem with my apps. When I try to open weather, finance and other apps, They show their start-up screen and in a couple of seconds they're gone - I am brought to my metro screen... Tried to reinstall the apps, but hadn't got any luck...
But wait, it get interesting: Even though the weather app crashes, I have a live tile option on for that app, and it shows me weather nicely.

why Microsoft pushed these Store Apps out and then screwed them up? I have some installed which work fine, but when trying to install others - they won't open. are being offered by Microsoft but there seems to be no solid explanation. This along with the real mess up on Update 1 for many users make me wonder who is in control of Windows.
View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen I was on Windows 8 I could install an app from the store and it would automatically put a tile for it on the start screen. After upgrading to 8.1 it stopped doing that. Now after I install an app I have to search for it and right click and tell it to pin to the start. Is there any way to have a tile automatically put on the start screen after install with 8.1?
View 3 Replies View Related Some few days ago there came a problem with my Laptop; and the problem was it starts consuming lot of battery when goes to idle mode. After Searching on internet i came to know that there is virus in My Laptop and there are only some programs which can remove it. Not even Avira, Microsoft Defender and any other. So i Just installed UnHackME software are cleaned my Windows 8.1. It worked Perfect and my problem seems to be resolved. But after removing that virus. New problem came in my Windows 8.1 and the Problem is :- When i Open Built-in Apps in my windows 8.1 Like App store, Skype, Mail, Finance, New, Health & Fitness, Weather, Calender, People, Food & Drink, Music, Games, Maps, Videos, News etc they just disappear after a single flash screen. The only apps which are in working condition are Camera, Sky drive and some apps which are created by installing some programs in my Windows 8.1.
What happens when i Open my apps :-
The app Screen Comes and after some 2-3 seconds it disappears...
What I've done so far :-
I tried to visit many communities and blogs but didn't find my problem resolved. I tried to run command sfc /scannow gave me following results after full scan Windows Resource Protection Found Corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windirLogsCBSCBS.log. For example C:WindowsLogsCBSCBS.log. Note that logging is currently not supported in offline servicing scenerios. (Problem Not resolved) I tried to run different commands in different blogs even to re-install App Store so that i can even uninstall all apps and re-install them all but .. (Problem Not Resolve)
Because i have huge collection of software installed in my Windows and being student i cannot afford to get the pain of re-installing the windows 8.1. And after some days I have exams and I've to study as well.
It's been at-least 5 months sense I've got my computer, never once have i used the app store! Every app that connects to the internet doesn't work! I've tried waiting forever, I can't even create another profile all i have is administrator.
View 9 Replies View RelatedHow do I remove (from the start screen) the text at the bottom that says, on mine "13 new apps insalled". I have opened them up, that way I was hoping it would go away, but it wont. This happened when I installed the Windows 8.1 update 1, yesterday.
Here is a picture of it : (look at the bottom)
It also says "new" at the right side of every app. I rather not have it like this at all. I know what new apps I have installed already.
3 days before my Windows 8.1 pc wasn't working during log in it showed up with "The System Event Notification Service service failed the sign in."
I posted this thread but no one replied then back yesterday I ran it into Safe Mode and used the CMD and put these "sfc/scannow" then the PC booted into Safe Mode.
But in my Start Menu many apps won't open accept Facebook, Twitter, Photos and the Store opens, and when I goto install apps it shows "This app wasn't installed"
And my Start menu is like this:
And the "sfc/scannow" command shows that there are Corrupted or Missing Files Then I also did these:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /ScanhealthDISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth But then also no luck .what to do I updated my PC from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 4 days before And this happened 3 days before And the PC started to boot from yesterday.
I do prefer a local account but when i try to install new apps from app store Windows 8.1 asks me to switch to a microsoft account.
Can I install apps with a local account? and how can i understand if I have a local account or microsoft account.
It all worked fine until tonight, some of installed app just wont start, those default apps from Microsoft are still working fine though; the problem is when you open the app, it quits to the sidebar while its still running on the background it just doesn't respond to anything until you close it, whats stranger is those apps running fine on my second monitor, when i drag them to my primary screen, they crash.
The only major thing I've done lately to my system was update my catalyst driver to the latest one, not sure if that is related; I've tried uninstall app and reinstall again, and I'm running default Windows Defender, nothing's been changed.
And I don't want to do a refresh just for that...
After showing Administrative tools they are all listed as "NEW"; how can I get rid of that word "NEW". Launching each & every one is not really what I intend to do. Isn't there a registry key for this ?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a subscription to Office 365 Small Business Premium. The install on my Windows 7 64 Bit machine went fine a has been working great for about 3 weeks now. I was at the office yesterday and for some reason Word 2013 fails on startup. It starts up, I select the blank page option and then it fails. It calls home (to Microsoft?) and tells me they will let me know when they have a solution. This is a small business how long am I supposed to wait for their solution? I need a solution now for Word 2013 now.
Everything else still works, Outlook 2013, Excel 2103. etc. I am thinking of removing this machine from the subscription and uninstalling Office 2013 and then downloading and installing it again.
Any easier way to get this Word 2013 functioning again
Skype on 8.1. When I look in the task manager->start up its not listed.
However, I then get messages and calls - so it must be running
Of course, with the tile version there are no settings that I can find to turn the darn thing off and it doesn't appear in the system tray.
How can I take control over skype so that it launches when I want it to?
A few weeks ago, after using the computer for some time, (The problem doesn't start until a few hours later) my programs won't start up unless running as administrator. All programs. Including notepad. (not sure about cmd) I have not done a full scan on my computer because it estimates more than one day and the estimated time still extends.
