I recently upgraded to 8.1 (actually, made a clean install), and everything seems to be working as designed. Except, on the Start Screen, although all the other apps show live tiles, the Weather app does not, showing only a plain blue background with the word "Weather" on it. The live tile feature is definitely turned on for this app.
If I Right Click on the Photos app on the start menu the option "Turn live tile on/off" is missing. I used Windows 8 before upgrading, and I remember it had the option. I wanted to have a small slideshow of my photo gallery on the live tile.
Other apps (such as mail, weather, store etc) are not missing the option and are working fine. I know that the preview version didn't have this problem.
I updated windows 8.1 pro with wmc from store.I had NO problems, received no error messages, had no dc's, the power didn't shut off, the download didn't stop .. literally nothing went wrong. After update everything worked fine. All the apps are downloaded and were working fine.
But,After 2/3 months since updated, I suddenly noticed that every live tile / folder / app / game / setting etc. which were working fine, now not working. When I clicked on any tile, nothing happened. It just went to a blank green screen because my background color is green. It appears on the left upper corner as opened but doesn't run. When I click, I am send back to Start Screen or Desktop. Even Store and Windows Setting stopped working. So, naturally i started checking the web for answers, but couldn't find a solution to the exact problem i was having. I saw countless posts of people saying "Just uninstall / re-install the apps" but at first, I couldn't get my App store app to run. Again, it was just blank after several minutes of waiting. I was able to download it after using the search bar menu on the right side of my computer, and was able to start installing some apps.
So i thought that everything was going to be ok, but then I ran into another problem where some of the apps wouldn't install, and I received an error message with the code/number of 0x80070002.
So, at this point, only a few of my apps are working due to the simple fact that I was able to re-install them, but the others I can't re-install because of this error message.
FIRST SOLUTION:I found a thread online that someone had created with a simple fix to about 2-3 errors on the tiles. This is a simple powershell script to re-register some apps so that they can run again. This worked to fix my app store app and setting, but only that apps. The app update is still not working.
I have another windows live ID, and when I log in with that Id, all my apps works normally! I am out of sorts now.
Ok, maybe I'm missing something but accessing the pictures (live pictures tile) folder from the start menu shows my photo's but not in the order I'd like them to be in. As such, to my horror I've found I can't move them around (re-arrange them).
I can obviously re-arrange them if I access the "My Pictures" folder through explorer, in fact they're actually arranged differently than what is displayed accessing it through the Windows Start Screen.
Anyway is it possible to arrange them there because trying to manually move them around proves fruitless.
Also, how do you take a snip of the stat screen using the snip tool? Win 8 can be annoying at times.
I am new to Windows 8, and on the tile display, when I touch a tile, i.e. the weather tile, a black screen appears with Accuweather.com in the middle; this lasts about a second, then the tile window display reappears. I would expect that the Accuweather.com website would appear, but it never does. Other tiles act the same way, but some apps are executed when the tile for them is touched.
A user provided the OP with a Desktop.ink file, and nothing was said about what to do with the file that was provided. I'm having the same problem, where I deleted the file by accident and now there is no live tile for the desktop anywhere on the start screen, not even in the All Apps category. I can't find it in the Windows Store either. What do I do? Here is a screenshot of the folder that I *think* held the original desktop file.
I have upgraded from Windows 8 to 8.1. After doing so and making sure my accounts are all setup, I have found that I can not get the mail tile to act "live". I have verified it is set to live by right-clicking and seeing that link state "turn live tile off". I tried doing that and then turning it back on. I have tried rebooting. But the tile just isn't live. My other live tiles (news, finance, weather, store, etc) all seem to be live. It is only mail that I am having a problem with.
We are deploying several hundred win 8.1 enterprise tablets and I'd like to set the default location to our local city when users first sign in. I can't find any information on the internet about how to do this programmaticly or via the registry (or even better via group policy)
Where the weather app location / city data is stored in the registry or in an ini file or something somewhere that I can modify via a script?
My weather app keeps telling me the conditions & forecast for Helena, Montana. I am sure it is a wonderful place, and I am thrilled to know it is now 32 degrees F outside, however I live in New Jersey. I cannot find a "change location" function in its settings. Where does the weather app get its location info from, and how can I correct it?
I have The Weather app permissions set to allow it to display the weather on the lock screen. This has been working fine for some time -- up until now.
I have a Windows 8.1 and a problem with my apps. When I try to open weather, finance and other apps, They show their start-up screen and in a couple of seconds they're gone - I am brought to my metro screen... Tried to reinstall the apps, but hadn't got any luck...
But wait, it get interesting: Even though the weather app crashes, I have a live tile option on for that app, and it shows me weather nicely.

For more than a week now, the above situation have been occurring. I have "scoured" the web and tried a lot of "solutions" and none as at yet have normalized my situation.
I am suspecting that I might need a registry solution, since I cannot refresh my installation- I upgraded to win 8 from win 7 online.
Also, the Skype app crashes almost as soon as it finishes loading and returns to the start menu. But, there is a sign it is still running and whenever you click on it, it trips off again.
I have uninstalled and re-installed several times, ran the apps troubleshooters many times, checked that the time service is running, synchronized this and that, etc to no avail.
My Mail Live tile do not have the option to turn on/off live update but the Calendar and People tiles have it yet none is updating.
I right click on the .exe file in the file manager and select Pin to Start Menu. The Tile appears and works. However, the next time I log on that tile has disappeared. What's happening?
Well, last night, I had noticed that there was no desktop tile and if I typed "desktop" on the start screen there was no app for it Also, "Change PC Settings" wasn't starting. My guess is that it did that because I had a really hard time uninstalling a program so I had to try going by means of registry editing. So I ended up refreshing my computer (from the installation disc since PC settings wasn't working ) Now everything is back to normal. So all I want to know is how I can prevent this from happening again.
I'm using Windows 8.1, and I have accidentally deleted the SkyDrive App Tile and am trying to find a way to restore it.
What happened was that I deleted the SkyDrive shortcut in the start menu, only to realise that doing this also deleted the SkyDrive App Tile in Metro View.
Is there a way to restore the SkyDrive App Tile? I have tried searching for SkyDrive under Apps but it isn't there, presumably because it is integrated into Windows 8.1. I also found the SkyDrive menu that the SkyDrive App Tile is a shortcut to under PC Settings, but it doesn't look like it's possible to make a shortcut to it directly from Metro View.
Just upgraded to 8.1 this weekend. Whenever I install a new app from the Store, it says it's installed, and I can search for it and play it, but it does NOT create a tile for the new app on my Start screen??
I can search for it, then right-click on it, and click on "Pin to Start" and it creates a tile on my Start screen, but I want it to create a new tile by default when I install an app, and it has stopped doing that!!!!
I was just wondering if it is possible to select a specific folder that the Photo app will shuffle through on it tile.
Right now the folder app is shuffling through on it tile anything that is in the "My Picture" folder. Whilst I would like it to shuffle through a folder inside of "My Pictures" ....
I installed Office 2013 two weeks ago. The setup automatically pinned Office apps on my start menu. But after couple of days, the icons from some of the office apps automatically got erased from the tiles and now it looks so ugly. I tried re-pinning apps on start menu but it didn't work. I also tried sfc /scannow but it was in vein. How to fix it and get the icons back on the tiles?
Windows 8.1 tile apps, no issues on desktop, give me Internet connection errors. Apps like euronews say that I am not connected to the Internet and I am. I also get "internal error" on other apps.
I have Windows 8 and use classic live Messenger 2012, it connects good but all contacts appear offline, trough Windows 8 messaging all contacts ok, connected and talking.
I tried with built in Windows 8 messaging application connected and disconected but same result. If I connect to other account with live Messenger 2012 all works ok, but with the account that is configured like Windows 8 logging account, don't, it connects but all contacts shown offline.
