I was watching a football game on firstrowsport.eu and my computer (a hp pavilion desktop) just shut down uncommanded. I waited for it to restart, and after the BIOS screen, it just had a flashing cursor. I used the disc version of PartedMagic to get into my computer and ran the fdisk-l command. [code]
View 10 RepliesMy computer was working fine a couple days ago and all of a sudden got a terrible Trojan that would spam me with random IE ads. So I ran ad-aware and it got rid of the problem. I went to bed relieved but woke up to my computer in a black screen with just a single cursor "_" flashing. I figured it was a fluke and restarted. same problem.
So I decided to open up the computer and check the SATA drive connections. Everything looked fine but the problem still persisted. I decided that it could just be slot number 1 and moved it to slot 3. The computer would start up and go to desktop but all of my icons disappeared and the computer would just hang if I tried to open any file or go on the internet or any program.
Obviously, it was because the SATA drive was now in a new slot?? I'm not sure. But I put it back into slot 1 and went into the BIOS setup and sure enough, it was a "not detected" for slot 1. The main HDslot.
I tried to reset the BIOS using the jumper method and it still just hangs on black screen with cursor "_" flashing...

- Intel duel core @ 3.2ghz
- 4gb RAM
- Asus P5Q-PRO motherboard
- geforce 8800 GTX graphics card
Wonder if anyone could help or provide some ideas.I'm trying to get my spare laptop to work.Every time I turn it on it just boots to a flashing cursor on a black screen.The hard drive in it is new - without windows 7 installed yet.I've tried booting from my windows 7 disk. Set optical drive to first in boot order. Just goes to flashing cursor, does not say "press any key to boot from cd" Tried booting from usb. OK the other night I shut down my system and all seemed fine until next day. I went to reboot and got the normal Dell splash screen with both the Set Up (F2) and Boot (F12) options. After the Dell screen finished it then went to load Windows, but instead I got a Black Screen with Flashing Cursor. Can't move cursor at all.
On the Dell screen I can access the Set Up (F2) bios pages. I can also access the Boot Options (F12) Page. What I can not gain access to is the Restore (F8) menus.
I did not know to make any sort of boot disk or boot repair disk so I do not have either of these and I do not know of anyone who is using windos 7 that could make me one to use. Also Dell puts the rstore on the hard drive so onlyhave a MS Works CD and a Drivers & Utilities CD l ran the diagnostics utility but forgot to plug in my computer so when it was almost done the battery must have died so will redo the test later as tired tonight as been up half the night with this issue. But for memory the first 6 of the 8 memories areas it was scanning tested fine. Will post an update later today when Iget chance to run the whole thing again!!
I know others have had this screen. Is there a solution as have spent the last day or so googling it and seems very mixed results depending on the user and their own case with this black screen w/cursor.Some have said bad hard drive (I HOPE NOT THE CASE FOR ME AT LEAST!!!) Some have said bad mother board. Some have said virus or malware Some have referenced a software update both Microsofts and also specific computer companies. So what can I do to get to my files at least to back them up that is providing the drive is OK! I do know from the boot menu my hard drive is showing in the boot menus. Does this mean that the drives OK but maybe a corrupted boot area or something?
Ive had this computer for about 5 years and recently it has started to boot up really slowly
It goes through post like normal and then hangs on a black screen with a blinking cursor in the top left for up to 3 mins (maybe more, i didnt actually time it) before the windows 7 splash screen comes up I rarely re-start my computer, but now when i do im always afraid that it wont start up with how long it sits at that screen
The stuff ive found in searching about it has been about computers that dont boot at all when they have this screen, so im worried that will happen to me Ive also found that it might be the MBR being damaged, but in all those cases the people with that problem have more than 1 OS installed, i only have 1 installed
I would just do the steps to repair the MBR but i want to make sure there isnt another/better solution before i do
The computer runs fine other than this problem I've never formatted it (i know i probably should after 5 years but i dont want to) I didnt know where to post this sort of thing, debugging seemed like the best choice
I have an Acer aspire 5733-6607 with Intel Core i3 CPU 2.40GHz.
My mom was on it playing a game on the internet and stepped away to wash dishes when she came back it was on the black screen with the blinking cursor in the top left corner. I tried system repair disc, the recovery disc that it had me make when I first got the laptop and windows defeender offline nothing worked. I tried F8 and it goes to the black screen with acer and where I can press F2 or F12 and then back to screen with blinking cursor. I tried restoring default settings in the F2 menu also.
System is Windows 7 home 64 bit with amd athlon II 255 Processor 3.10 GHz and 4gb of ram. Avast anti-virus. I have windows firewall on, but haven't really made any other changes.My cursor flashes the busy symbol about once every 4-5 seconds, and it does so whenever the mouse is on the desktop or anywhere it shows the regular icon. When inside this text window it changes to the text cursor and ceases to flash, however. I changed the icon only to have the new one act the same.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm having an issue with my mouse's cursor constantly flashing the loading sign (blue circle) over and over. It only ever stops if I mouse over something that changes the normal cursor picture.
It started happening after my computer just froze randomly while playing Dota 2. I had to manually shut down the computer and when I turned it back on that is when this problem started happening.
Also, I can't do a system restore (as far as I know) because I had savepoints turned off before the issue so there is nothing to restore to.
Have my Dad's Fujitsu Esprimo laptop to uninstall Searchqu, Bandoo etc for him which were causing problems. That went fine, computer shut down and tried to install Windows updates. Now won't restart.Hangs on Fujitsu screen with options for "<ESC>: Diagnostic Screen, <F2>:BIOS Setup, <F12>: Boot Menu" and Blue progress bar. Progress reaches about 75% complete VERY slowly (hour) but then hangs on black screen with white cursor in top left corner. Been like that for 2 hours now.Have tried solutions from Google - click F2 then re-setting boot order in Bios to "default order", click F12 and choose different options, tried F8 for safe mode, but F8 doesn't do anything.I don't know if it's related to Searchqu, to the updates or if it's just a creepy coincidence and the computer itself is actually broken. He doesn't have a Windows7 installation cd.
View 5 Replies View RelatedEarlier this week my HP desktop forced shutdown while browsing the Internet using IE9. Upon reboot the HP screen loaded, afterwards a black screen with a flashing cursor appeared. I had used CTRL+ALT+DEL function in which my computer rebooted.Showed the HP screen and immediately showed the black screen with a flashing cursor. Again no mouse cursor was available. I performed a diagnostics check in which the CPU, HDD, etc. checked out, restored BIOS to factory settings, even placing the HDD as priority 1. I inserted the Windows recovery disk and attempted a start up repair, and a restore point with no favorable results. Through the recovery disks command prompt I accessed all my music and documents, so I assume the hard drive is still functioning. I'm thinking as a last resort of performing a repartitioning of my hard drive and performing a clean install of Windows 7.
View 2 Replies View RelatedToday I started up my pc and after the BIOS screen (the place where you can press f8-f11 for various options) it went to a black screen with a blinking underscore in the upper left corner and stayed there indefinitely. It did this even after reboot.
I tried using the diagnostic tool and everything it tested passed (including HDD). I did this test twice and the same results were produced.
I also googled for similar problems (one topic mentioned that the op disassembling his computer and physically tapping a chip on the motherboard caused it to work) but I have no experience with taking apart my computer and i do not want to break it accidentally. I did however chance upon a topic advising him to do a CMOS reset which apparently helped that op, so i looked through the various options on the BIOS page. There was one option (f10 I think) mentioning CMOS on its fourth sub-window, so i pressed the reset option but I'm mot entirely sure if I used the right function.
I uninstalled kaspersky pure and replaced kaspersky pure for kaspersky anti-virus yesterday, dont know if this was the cause. I am using windows 7 64 bit.
Can't get into windows, black screen with blinking cursor for some reason I can't even get into windows 7, after I get pass the screen that says "asus", my laptop brand, It goes into a black screen with a blinking cursor in the left hand corner like this: Click this bar to view the full image. I'm unable to do anything at that point, it just blinks. I can't even boot into safe mode now, the only think I'm able to get into is the Bios Setup Utility menus and Asus' express gate, which is just a media/internet/gaming/skype thing that doesn't allow .exe files to run. This came factory installed so I don't have a windows 7 disc to run fixes.

Recently my PC is getting stuck for no reason. While browsing, watching a movie, when I leave it idle for a while its getting stuck. Screen is as it was and I cannot move the cursor, keyboard isn't working. Then I restart it manually and go to the option "start windows normally" or something. This happened previously and I thought it has smthin to do with my HDD, but I checked it n re installed win7 64bit. It was working normally for about 3 months and now it started again.
my Acer aspire 4750G uses windows 7 64 bitit boots and get stuck in the log in screen.. I have no password but I have two users, so I have to click on which to log into.the cursor is moving , but when I click on the User, nothing happens.. the cursor is still moving, but there is no indication that the computer is reading.that round moving icon that you see is not there..is there a way to fix this without reformatting? I dont know much about computer troubleshooting and repair
View 3 Replies View Relatedmy dell computer xp windows 7 when i try to boot up it will just get to blue screen but does not bring up accounts or allow to boot up any further then blinks or flashes blue to black screen and back. I can boot in safe mode and i have scanned computer with mal-ware, mcafee, and eset scanner . have not found a virus. I did lose the ability to watch you-tube videos, and the last error i got was adobe crashed. i don't know what to do from here. I have windows disk and thought about booting from it and doing a system repair but when i put that disk in i do not have the system repair option just an installation option.

I've tried booting from a start disk. It won't go into the advanced boot options, and booting from a disk made no difference. This has happened before but I was able to get in through safe mode. Once I get in I can do a system restore and it will work for a while. How can I get in to my machine?

View 2 Replies View Relatedit started over a year ago when I started to get random BSOD messages, after no specific update, installation, or hardware change whatsoever.those usually included "IRQ_LESS_OR_EQUAL". usually after a crash it took some startup attempts to boot successfuly.
more recently crashes followed those BSOD's:
"BAD_POOL_CALLER"
"BAD_POOL_HEADER"
"BAD_SYSTEM_CONFIG_INFO"
since the latest crash, the computer is failing to start - after widows logo appears, I get a black screen with a cursor. NO control afterwards - Ctrl+Alt+Del doesn't work and I all I can do is restart.
I tried:
1. safe mode (all kinds) - still get the black screen with no response
2. low resolution video mode- same
3. Windows Restore, both from the boot options dialog and from the WIN7 installation disc boot - it doesn't run, I get an error message ("the application referenced memory......... .....memory can't be read" )
4. memory check, it ran but I cant access the results.
5. Windows system files checker ('sfc'), via the repair tools command prompt - it doesn't start, says there's a startup repair pending so startup - yet there isn't
6. reset BIOS settings - nothing before the current trouble, at times, I also tried:
- reinstalling drivers for Graphic card, Network card and motherboard
- cleaning dust in the CPU cooler
- fastening connectors
- clean format (that was a long time ago but blue screens appeared even shortly afterwards)
nothing worked....

I have a Dell studio XPS desktop computer with windows 7 home premium service pack 1.The processor is an Intel i5 CPU,12gb of ram,64-bit system. I have noticed that recently when I navigate to different screens the web pages will not load up fast until I move the cursor slightly. If I do not move the cursor the page takes forever to load up. I have run scans for viruses and everything comes up negative. I have also changed out the mouse but it still does the same thing. What would cause this and how can I fix the problem.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have just bought a new ssd for my desktop and have winodws running on my old 500GB hard disk.I installed windws 7 home 64 bit on my new ssd and have winodws ultimate on my old HDD.I the booted it from my ssd and it ran fine then I formatted my HDD with the old winodws using mini-tool Partion and had to restart to format. The HDD did have a system restore Partion but my ssd did not, now when I boot from my ssd a white line just shows up In the top left corner.I have Tryed windows startuP repair but no luck.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI wanted to install more RAM, but Supermicro support told me I needed to update BIOS (flash it) to enable it to accept higher RAM.After I did this, the BIOS seems to have lost the record that boots my Windows 7 installation. After going through the checks, it just comes up with "Operating System not found."So I thought that, since I have two SATA drives, I could try installing Windows on my redundant disk to see if that might generate a dual boot menu.I was able to successfully install a fresh copy of Windows on the 2nd disk, but it will only boot into that one. It seems my system has completely forgotten about my other, working, installation.Is there a process for recovering the boot information and setting it up such that I can go back to using my other installation?
View 2 Replies View RelatedRecently I got this problem on my Acer Aspire 5742G where my laptop gets stuck on black screen with a flashing underscore at the top left corner right after the Acer splash screen. I can get into Bios but I can't get into safe mode (normally I could press F8 to get into Advanced Boot Options but this no longer works).
The problem started when I decided to try out Windows 8 Preview a few days ago. I managed to set up dual boot windows 7 home premium/windows 8 preview and it worked fine. But I only gave 20GB to the windows 8 partition and I decided I needed more. I thought it's a simple matter to transfer space by shrinking the volume of the win7 partition, format the new unallocated space and extend the volume of the win8 partition. But after I did this, all the partitions apart from the recovery one became "simple partitions" instead of "primary partitions". I don't know the difference between the two terms and I didn't think it was a problem so I just turned off the laptop once I finished with it. The next time I turned it on the problem started. Could this have caused problems with the hard drive? It's the only thing I can think of that caused the problem.
Unfortunately I can't find my recovery disc either.
Attempted to run chkdsk after Windows Update failed. When I restarted computer to run chkdsk, I got the black screen with the flashing "_". No pointer, if I push crtl, alt, delete, it just attempts to reboot. No other key does anything. I have removed the battery, unplugged the computer, but still get the same results. I am unable to get any boot options when pressing F8. Unable to boot from Repair disk, either. Ran diagnostics in F12, which showed all fine

View 2 Replies View RelatedSo I installed Windows 7 on my HD. The installation process went well. I chose my Username, password, etc, and then Windows prepares the Desktop for the first use, and then the PC automatically reboots.
The problem is that when the pc reboots after the final stage of the installation, Windows won't boot up and I get stuck with a blinking cursor. The only way I can boot up is when I turn on the PC and keep pressing F5 and then it takes me to a GRUB 0.4.4 Red Window like this one
When I chose the "alternative method", Windows boots with no problem. Is there a way to choose the alterative method as the default?
I used to have win xp installed after which i decided to try out the win 7 so i installed it on another HDD. After thhe install everything worked fine so i decided i can format the drive on which xp was installed before. Althought win 7 did let me format it because it was a system drive ( the old xp drive) i used some other tools to get rid of it thinking i can just do a fixboot and restore win 7 boot files. Now that the old system partition is gone win 7 wont boot, all i get isa black screen and a blinking cursor. I tried to boot from the win 7 dvd and do startup repair but still get the same issue.
i really dont want to reformat win 7 and install it again?
My laptop (Hp Pavilion dvx4 1 1/2 years old) suddenly won't load Windows 7. It turns on, fan and DVD drive run but the mute and Internet icons on the keyboard remain red and there are two flashing lights on the keyboard (one beside the caps lock key and the other is above the scroll key). That's all it does. No beeps, sounds or cursor. I had noticed a problem with my sound on a couple web sites prior to this but no error messages ever displayed indicating any problems. I bought this laptop at Best Buys and they installed a recovery disc but other then that I don't have the original Windows 7 disc in order to try to boot from CD-rom.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI thought I would start to describe this issue by telling you what I screwed up on and how I made it happen: I accidentally set my backup drive as my primary (set the partition as active in CMD, it has no installation on it). Then when I went to boot my device, it would tell me that Windows was not installed. I put my C: (main, primary) partition as my default again (with CMD on installation disk) and I was able to get Windows to boot. Then I messed with the MBR to try to fix it and now this happens:
Current problem: When I boot Windows, it give me the old Vista-looking boot scroller (Not "starting windows" with the traditional animation). This animation only lasts for about 3 seconds, then it goes to a black screen with the cursor. That is all. Nothing loads, yet no error message. I tried using a few bootrec commands to fix it using the installation CD's CMD but no luck.
