Flashing BIOS Firmware Update Has Lost Windows 7 Boot Record?
Nov 30, 2012
I wanted to install more RAM, but Supermicro support told me I needed to update BIOS (flash it) to enable it to accept higher RAM.After I did this, the BIOS seems to have lost the record that boots my Windows 7 installation. After going through the checks, it just comes up with "Operating System not found."So I thought that, since I have two SATA drives, I could try installing Windows on my redundant disk to see if that might generate a dual boot menu.I was able to successfully install a fresh copy of Windows on the 2nd disk, but it will only boot into that one. It seems my system has completely forgotten about my other, working, installation. Is there a process for recovering the boot information and setting it up such that I can go back to using my other installation?

I have a desktop using a Gigabyte GA-Z68X-UD3H-B3 (revision 1) motherboard. Using the Gigabyte @Bios utility, I updated the Bios to F12. After rebooting as @Bios suggested, I can no longer get Windows to boot. I've noted the following:
1) I have issue accesing the Bios setup. Sometimes I can access it, sometimes I cannot;
2) When I am able to access the Bios, I can confirm the disk Boot Priority, however it's is now showing the drives as SCSI (I only have SATA drives);
3) There is a new setup screen displayed after the Gigabyte logo screen shows. This screen now shows 'Serial ATA AHCI, Version iSrc 1.20E.
Copyright (c) 2003-2008. Intel Corporation.
**This version supports only Hard Disk and CDROM drives. **
Please wait. This will take a few seconds.
Then shows Controller/Bus/Function/Port/Device and lists all harddrives. At the end of the drive list it shows 'AHCI Bios installed'
4. After step 3, it shows the prompt 'Loading Operating System' - the boot hangs at this point.I DID backup the existing Bios before updating it. I have not gone in and copied that file to a floppy to try and flash the Bios using the backup (don't know if this is possible).

I have an ADATA S510 120gig SSD, i tried downloading the Firmware upgrade tool seen on this page S510 SATA 6Gb/s Solid State Drive, Download, S510, 500 Series, Solid State Drive, Welcome to ADATA
I opened the tool and it didnt find my SSD drive. I then downloaded the file itself to try and manually install it but it is a "VIC" file, i dont even know how to open it.
Does anyone have experience with updating their firmware on these SSD drives?
edit: after digging around on my machine i found that i have firmware 3.3.2 which is apparently the latest firmware out there right now (i didnt know that till i just found this info out, this machine is 2 weeks old)

I have an Acer Extensa 5620 laptop, which came with an Intel Core 2 Duo Merom T5250 processor (1.5GHz). I'm upgrading the CPU to a Core 2 Duo Penryn T8300 (2.4GHz). Did a bit of research beforehand to determine that my mothorboard supports it, and it does, but only if I upgrade my BIOS (PhoenixBIOS) from version 1.16 to 1.23 or later. So I downloaded the most recent version from Acer's website (Acer Europe - Service & Support, Drivers & Utilities, Downloads, Notebook, Extensa 5620), and got a .zip file containing the following files:
ACERACDC.EXE
CLB-135.bat
CLB-135.ROM
CLB-135.WPH
HFB135US.bld
phlash16.exe
[code]....
It seems there are several options in this download for flashing ones BIOS. The simplest one, from a bit of googling seems to be to run CLB-135.EXE as administrator from within windows. Before I do this though, I want to know if I've got everything right, since a failed flashing could brick my laptop. One thing that sets off alarm bells is that doing it this way uses the winflash32 utility. Although my laptop came with 32 bit Vista, I'm currently using 64 bit Windows 7. My question is: will this work? Or will I need to track down winflash64? Or, is this a terrible way to flash my BIOS and should I do something else completely?

Earlier I was trying to fix a DCP latency issue and latencymon suggested I update my BIOS. I got the BIOS from Asrock directly. During the update I was given a BSoD and memory dump. The dump froze at 15 and I eventually turned off the computer. Upon rebooting I was unable to get a display.
So far I have reset the cmos, switched between gpu and integrated graphics, removed the gpu and other adaptors, let the computer stay off for 30min; all of which has not worked. When resting the cmos I used both the jumper switch, quick clear, and battery removal.
Dr. Debug shows no errors when starting the computer and it appears to continue cycling boots, despite the lack of error.

After flashing the bios, my computer could not find the OS. The options displayed recommended that I try to repair the OS, so I made that selection with no joy. I went into the bios setup and found that it was no longer setup for my raid 1 drives, so reconfigured. When I did this, I missed setting the SATA 4/5 to IDE and went through the process again of trying to repair the OS. Once again, that did not work.
I went back into the bios and discovered my oversight, fixed it, but the computer still does not recognize my raid drives. The raid bios setup utility still shows a valid array. At this point, my assumption is that it doesn't recognize the array drive because the driver isn't loading, so I've tried to reload the drivers. The motherboard manual only describes how to do this when installing a new operating system and I do not want to lose my programs. Do you have any suggestions?

My Samsung series 3 laptop has been sending out popup messages telling me I need a bios update, I go to the Samsung software update site and this bios update has been failing, I have made several calls and chats to techs at Samsung who tell me to do what I have already done, they tell to ask for tier 2 tech, who can go in my computer and fix it , When I finally got a tier 2 tech, they told me the same thing, I told him what I had been told about him and what he could do, He said, is it working , I said yes, but settings on computer change on their own, like wifi turns itself on and that concerns me. Anyway, He said that it didn't need a bios update, even the Samsung website said this computer needed a bios update. I posted this on hardware, firmware concerns, and they told me to post here, I was going to go to a site ,that had a download that checked drivers,

i never flashed bios before and have recently noticed there is an update on the Acer web site. The bios mine is running on at the minute is R01-B3 and the new one is R01-B4.
Is it worth updating to the new one?
Will Win 7 take to it?
What will be the benefits of the newly released bios over the one I have?
How do I go about doing it and are there any safety precautions I could take so I can roll back incase I F it up?

I've spent my whole day trying to figure out what is going on with this to no avail What I've Done:Installed Windows 7 ultimate 64-bit OS on Crucial M4 drive that was acting up and freezing Continued freezing after installing drivers, stable for 10-30mins then freeze, requires hard reset every time updated FW to 000F as recommended, same deal swapped ports with platter drive, same deal took drive in to where I bought it from, they said all stress tests etc went fine Pretty much at my wits end. I'm fairly convinced its nothing else since I am running on the seperate mechanical drive fine.
Specs as follows:
Acer Aspire 8943G-5636
Intel Core i3-350M processor @ 2.26GHz, 3MB L3 cache
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650
8GB memory
500GB Western Digital mechanical HDD
128GB Crucial M4 SSD

I have an HP Pavilion G6-1d40ca. It crashed the other day while I was using it, and when I restarted it, it went to BIOS update. It froze while updating, and died in itself (I think the battery died, it wasn't plugged in. I never knew about BIOS update, so I wasn't expecting for the battery to die during the update, so I didn't plug it in.) Second time, booted it up (it was plugged in this time), and went into BIOS update once again. All's good, was able to use the laptop for about five minutes, then it crashed once again. Now, when I boot it up, nothing comes up on the screen. No nothing. The power button is on, the wi-fi is on, the LED light is blinking non-stop, more than 6 times than what is referred to the HP website.
I tried doing the remove battery and adapter, press power button for 30 seconds, plug it in without the battery, but to no avail. I also did the whole win+B, but doesn't work either. I tried pressing f11, but nothing comes up on the screen. I don't remember where I put the recovery discs that came with the laptop. I thought I put it on the box together with recovery discs for our other computers at home, but I guess I didn't. The thing is, I don't know where to begin, since I don't have anything on the screen itself. Not even a start-up logo or something.

I have a HP Touchsmart 300-1060a (Home Premium Windows 7 64 BIT) which I bought few years back. Now for the last 6 months or so I started getting issues with my machine was not displaying anything at all after turning it on. So I had to hard reset my power from the machine and then was able to see it started displaying again. At first I suspected graphic card (NVIDIA GEFORCE) but then I did my diagnostic test and nothing was found. One day, I started re-imaging my machine as a fresh and then after this it never came back ONLINE. I read all HP forums & even HP Online support was unable to help me to find the cause.Because when I turn on my machine I can see the power light was on and could hear big fan noise but mo HDD activity at all.So at this stage, I suspected either motherboard or BIOS but wasn't 100% sure what could be the real cause because I was sure it was not due to graphic card.So first I re-setted by my BIOS to see if it helps but it didn't came up at all. So then I took my machine to a Computer repair shop (a friend of mine) and we detected it could be due to the regulator which supplies power to the CPU and motherboard. So we replaced that part and now my HP Touchsmart is running fin since then. But I have lost my HP Startup logo with options such as below: [code]

This morning one of our computers started acting strangely. Any window screens we have open, whether an Internet Explorer window, My Computer screen, etc, the top bars are flashing in and out. It is similar to the flashing like when it is trying to alert you of an error message / box you have to click through to do something else. The home screen is fine, and shows no signs of flashing or flickering, it only shows on any window screens you have open. It will interrupt you when you are trying to open drop down menus etc as well. I have gone into screen resolution, but as soon as I open a drop down box, it will close as soon as the screen flashes again. However I was able to change the resolution to a lower setting, but it still flashed. I also tried to change the screen refresh rate, but there was only one option to choose, 60 hertz. The computer is an Acer Laptop, running Windows 7 and AVG Antivirus, but I dont have any other exact specs on it right now as im working from a different computer. My mother said it had updated last night with a possible new Windows update? Again the back / desktop screen appears fine, it just seems to affect any windows you have open.

I'm going to install RC1 in the next few days.
I was looking to test the stability within RC1 of an adaptec 1220SA card I have to control the system drives. I have the Vista 64bit driver for the card as this is the newest listed.
I have created a recovery disc in beta build 7000 and hope to use this to boot into a DOS shell and follow the instructions given on the adaptec site:
This is the BIOS release v6.0-0 Build 2330 for the Adaptec SATA II RAID 1220SA Controller.
This BIOS should only be used together with Driver v1.6.12086 in Windows Server 2008 or Windows Vista.
This self-extracting archive includes the flash utility, the BIOS image file and the Release Notes.
Caution: If the BIOS update fails with an error message "unable to find file" or "target controller does not match", please see ASK Answer ID 15241
Installation Instruction: This file is self extracting and will unzip to the directory adaptec1220sa. Copy the expanded files to a floppy diskette. The expanded files can also be copied to a USB device or CD-R.
Shut down the operating system and reboot to DOS from a bootable floppy disk, USB device or CD-R. Insert the media with the update files. Run the flash utility program named AFU.EXE included in this download to backup the current BIOS and flash the new BIOS image.
I'm hoping to expand the bios update file onto a cd for the second drive or alternatively stick it on a USB stick.
My question is this, when I am in the dos shell, what do I do!
I suddenly realised that i've never had a need to use the command line

Every once in a while I keep getting a flashing pop up at the bottom of my screen saying a Java update is available wanting me to click it. In the past I have done that and got a virus from it. (Bleeping computers helped me get rid of it)I run a scan with avast and malwarebytes that I have installed but they never find a virus. I am just asking if I can trust it or is it a virus thats hidden so well that it cant be detected by avast or maywarebytes?

When I get to the splash screen it just blinks. It won't boot. I've tried going into the safe mode by pressing F8 at the previous screen. I've tried booting from a start disk. It won't go into the advanced boot options, and booting from a disk made no difference. This has happened before but I was able to get in through safe mode. Once I get in I can do a system restore and it will work for a while. How can I get in to my machine?

I had a very strange problem today when I was waking my machine up from hibernation. Here's my set up:
Windows 7 x64
Windows 7 is on a SSD drive
Apple Mac Pro
I also have two other drives in, one for OSX and one with an old Vista x64 on it. I mainly work in Win 7, I never shut this computer off, I just restart sometimes. But today I put it in hibernation. When I was supposed to wake it back up the win 7 drive had just disappeared. I booted in Vista 64 and had a look in the disk manager, it tells me that the SSD drive isn't initialized (see attached screenshot).
As you may guess I can't browse this disk, and it does not show up during boot up. I did try to start from the Windows 7 CD and do a recovery, but it can't find my Windows 7 installation and so I guess I can't repair. What I could try to recover? Since I can boot my old OSX and my old Vista I'm quite sure it's not the rest of the hardware, I figure it's the Windows 7 drive or maybe its MBR.
