Windows 7 Backup Tries To Format Blank Disks
Oct 12, 2011
When trying to backup to removable media ( CD or DVD ) Windows tries to format blank disks. I believe this will not work, look at the following link. Windows Backup does not back up to CD-R, CD-RW, or DVD-R devices It would appear this type of medium is not supported.

Almost every Windows application that tries to deal with my new Blu-Ray drive via a Windows dialogue insists on trying to format the BD-R disk first.
You can't format a BD-R disk, it's write-once and formatting would effectively destroy the disk, at $4 a pop.
BD-R disks don't need formatting, those applications that can handle them properly and independently do just fine without formatting.
If I tell it "no, don't format the thing", then Windows insists there's no disk in the drive.
How can I tell Windows 7/64 SP1 to quit trying to format BD-R disks, and recognize them correctly?

I have a new computer build where I have Win 7 Pro 64-bit installed on a SSD. Then I have a pair of 1TB drives that I setup as mirroring drives in Disc Management. I proceeded to setup my windows backup to the mirrored drive, but it is giving me the warning: When restoring a system image from this volume, the disks on your computer cannot be formatted to match the layout of the disks in the backup. To have full restore functionality, select a volume on basic disk as our backup location. I am not really sure I even need a backup for the SSD.
It is a small 64GB drive strictly for the OS and surfing the net, minor games (card games, etc.) and a few other minor things. I mirrored the 1TB drives because they are going to be our music server on our network for our laptops, as well as we planned to backup our laptops to the 1TB drive. I figured I would mirror the 1TB in case one crashed we would have the backup. However, if I am having issues with not being able to setup windows backup on these from this computer, I assume I will run into the same issues with the laptop backups. Is there no way to use windows backup to a mirrored drive?

My fiance has a Dell Inspiron 15" laptop with Windows Vista Home Premium currently on it. She got a trojan (heur.html.maliframe) and instead of trying to go through the hassle of removing it, I thought it'd be a good time to wipe the HDD and go to Windows 7.
1. I have Windows 7 Professional backup disks that I purchased from Microsoft. Would I be able to use that DVD to do a clean install on the Dell? I would obviosly need to purchase a key from MS, but in terms of the actual software, would that be feasible?
2. If that even worked, would getting the drivers for the Dell be an issue? Or would Win7 automatically find them?

I'd seen many USB card readers advertised, and I ordered the SanDisk MicroMate (a SDHC device), thinking I could connect this to my android tablet and quickly have additional (using a new 8GB SDHC card) storage for reading and writing. When the connection was made, however, the message was "Blank USB storage; USB storage blank or has unsupported format" I offer this to indicate that the reader does seem operational. The card couldn't be accessed using the tab's file managers. In an attempt to figure out the problem, I tried using it on my two Windows PCs (both Win 7-64b computers, a desktop and a laptop) and found what are to me confusing results:
1. If I insert the new 8 GB SDHC card into the internal card reader of either of my computers, it is immediately accessible. I was able to copy a file to it. Format is FAT32.
2. If I connect the reader to a powered USB port on either computer, the reader device is shown with no errors in Device Manager, but when the card is inserted into the reader, the error "the drive must be formatted" appears.

I want to backup my PC's data files to an external HD using Windows 7 backup & restore utility. If I use the recommended default option that also includes a back mirror of Windows 7 will the PC automatically backup only New data since the backup at the scheduled option chosen? Will the backed up files on the backup drive appear as windows file folders (My Pictures, My Documents etc.) or be in an encoded file format?

I am acquiring a 1.5TB external drive. I will be basically have a single 1.5TB file on this drive. It will be a Truecrypt encrypted archive.
Given that the entire hard disk will be occuppied with one huge file, what is the best way to format it? Is NTFS still the way to go? Does it make sense to increase the cluster size above the 4KB default?
I am concerned about both performance and not wasting space, but the performance is the lesser concern.

Is there a repair with these disks? I am getting a BOOTMGR missing but I checked the hard drive and it is fine. I do not want to lose anything because I have a lot on it.I cloned my image about 5 days ago and I may go that route, however, I have done things since then and don't want to lose the data. Before I load the HP Recovery disks (4 of them, and I had to order them for free except pay for shipping), is there a repair option?

I was given a Pavilion DV9000z by my sister who had purchased a replacement for herself. She wiped the two installed hard drives and clean installed windows 7. It appears that there is a 100MB systemm reserved partiion on one disk (total size 320GB, the rest of which was unpartitioned when I got it), and the operating system was loaded on the second disk (120 GB).I had a dead Vista laptop which had a 100GB SATA drive. I wanted to reformat it to have as a sppare. If I pull either one of the original drives out it won't boot. If I take out the 320 GB drive (with the 100MB partition) the laptop either goes black screen (if I move the 120 GB drive into the primary bay) or tries to boot Vista (if I put the scavanged hard drive in the primary bay), or tells me operating system files are lost (if I pull the 120 GB drive and replace it with the scavanged drive). So it appears to me that the 100MB partition on the 320 GB drive is waht the system is booting from, but that it won't load Windows 7 unless the second drive is also there. Is there any way to move the system reserved partition to the 120 GB drive? Or the operating system files to the 320 GB drive? It scares me that if either drive dies, the system won't boot.

If I use a commercial software like Drive Scrubber to clean my HD, will a Win 7 Upgrade Discboot ? I want to eliminate any possible virus/malware. Is there any advantage to using commercial software to format, or is the reinstall format listed in the tutorials as effective? My concern is that Kaspersky Internet Security 2012 (KIS) had corrupted data bases and after removal and reinstallation did not perform well. I could not download anything, e.g. CCleaner and received Certificate Error questions on certain websites. Also, I would like a fresh registry to insure previous programs like Chrome, Firefox, KIS, remnants are eliminated.

When you wish to recover your system using this utility, do you use the Windows program at desktop or the rescue disc I created from the program? The reasn I ask is because I used to have better luck using Acronis' disc rather than the program and wonderd if the same applied here. Also, does the backup remove the existing one so that you only have one at a time or can you have more than one.

I backup 100GB of data with Windows Backup and over the time where I do all my backups there is like only 30GB of data which changed from those 100GB and also new files were added. Now my external drive is full. When I now delete the very early backup, the first one where the 100GB of data was saved, will it delete then ALL those 100 GB, or will it just delete the previous versions of the files which were modified AFTER that time, which are in this case the 30GB I talked about? Because otherwhise I would then have in the end an uncomplete, messed up backup.

I'm using Win 7 Pro and want to schedule several backups to my NAS. With Win XP, I was able to schedule multiple backup jobs, which makes things easier since I have 116 GB of data. I like to backup my documents, email files, etc. every week, but my photos, MP3s, etc. don't change as frequently so once a month is fine for that. Not surprisingly, the media collection takes much longer to backup, which is another reason I try to separate it from my "regular" backup.Unfortunately, Win 7 backup only seems to allow one backup job to be scheduled, which seems awfully limited. Am I missing something? Are there other free backup utilities that would work better, or do I need to shell out some cash?

My computer has two 1GB HDDs.Disk C: is the boot disk and is running Windows 7 64 bit upgraded from Vista 64.Can I use the same Win 7 disk (and key) to install to Drive E: as a clean install? I think the new installation would pickup a dual boot system and give me the option as to which I wanted to use.I understand that I can't use the same disk for two different machines. But can I use it for two installations on the same machine?

So, I recently bought a used computer from CL. The machine is a Dell Laptop that originally had Windows Vista installed on it. The original owner upgraded to Windows 7 Enterprise and had a bunch of new software installed on the machine. (FL Studio, Photoshop, etc.)I was able to use the computer successfully for the first day until I installed iTunes. Something went wrong, and now when I boot up in normal mode Windows will freeze as soon as i try to open anything. I can open the Start menu, but anything past that will cause a freeze. The computer works fine in all Safe ModesSo, what I would like to do is restore Windows 7 to it's original configurations and still be able to keep all those great programs already installed. However, I do not any of the Windows 7 media that was used for the upgrade. What can I do? Will creating a system image work, or will I end up just copying the freeze problem if I do that?

I am looking at reformatting my computer, the only thing holding me back is a matter of software. I have a windows 7 professional 64-bit disk which came under the OEM licence, and I purchased Microsoft office 2010 on-line (I have an installer and a disk I had shipped to me). Would reformatting my computer and reinstalling windows require me to use one of my uses of either of the mentioned pieces of software? And where could I find how many uses I have (if it is indeed limited).

My rather new Acer Predator G has been acting up lately. I tried a restore point but this doesn't seem to help. As a last resort I was going to format the disk and re-install 7, however Acer never sent me recovery disks and I don't have 7 disks (Came pre-loaded). So my question is, if I can find someone with windows 7 disks can I use them + The CD key that's on the label of my desktop? Or do I need specific ones? Acer will send me recovery disks for 20$ but If I can pull this off for cheaper, I'd like to.
