Trying To Revert From Failed New MB Install Now Windows 7 Won't Boot
Jul 25, 2012
I made the naive mistake of trying to upgrade from a Biostar TH67+ MB to a MSI Z77A-GD65 MB using my existing Windows install. After I installed the new MB and the new drivers within Win 7 Pro 64 bit, the machine wouldn't boot. So I reverted to the Biostar MB and it still won't boot. I have tried Safe Mode (which just hangs) and I have run Startup Repair several times. How I can further troubleshoot/repair the boot?

I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 (2.5 years old). All my data is backed up so I have no concerns about recoverying data.First, the laptop crashed and ran several chkdsk on start up. I froze several times during this. It said it had fixed some errors then started up again. This time it wanted to do start up repair. Same thing kept happening, froze at least twenty times during this. Eventually it gave me the blue screen of death.
'Technical information
*** STOP: 0x000000F4 (0x0000000000000003, 0xFFFFFA8004C1D260, 0xFFFFFA8004C1D498, 0xFFFFF8000130DDA0)'
This repeated several times. I ran the diagnostics and it told me the hard drive could not be found (error code 0146, 2000-0146). Essentially, it's a Dell laptop (I know) and I am not bothered about recovering the hard drive.I would, however, like to install Windows 7, or alternatively Linux, onto my external hard drive. But I just can't seem to get it to work.I have extracted a Linux iso to the external hard drive I want to install on, onto a cd, onto a FAT32 8gb usb stick, but it has given me the bootmgr is missing error every time. I have tried it with the interal HDD in and removed.I am no longer concerned about the internal HDD, i can use it for a door stop for all I am concerned, I just want to load ANY os onto my external hard drive so I can get the laptop working.

Win 7 Professional with all current updates an patches that Windows update wanted installed. IE 9 stopped working, it would just flash on and then off.
Followed a MS guide that was to FIXIT and the program failed. Tried Method 2, manual reset of IE options, In the control panel I clicked 'Interent Options' nothing happens. Never get to the reset button I was to click.
uninstall IE9. Could not do it via the Windows Update as this was installed as part up the original installation. Followed the other open to turn off IE 9 which is suppose to remove IE9 and then Windows Update can reinstall it. That worked and I now had a flashing IE8. The Update failed though. MS forum says to go to the IE9 site and download it myself. That failed.
Now was told do a recovery. That failed, not surprising as it was a restore point created by one of the earlier attemps to fix the problem. An older backup from March was also an option and and that failed saying is was missing files needed.
Tried a number of other suggestions and something via msconfig that I have forgotten now. It was 2 AM and was getting rather loopy and frustrated. I decided to follow the steps again that seemed to at least get me IE 8 and did the turn off again. That failed and now I cannot boot as it is stuck trying to revert the computer back to the state it was in before I tried the function. Safe mode said it did a restore and had me started though. I tried to restart normally and I was right back at the reverting problem again.
I REALLY DO NOT want to do a system reinstall but I am at a lose where to go next.

how tricky it is to keep a clean install on Windows I'm wondering if i could ask some advice?
I will have the OS and programs on the ssd, let's call that c: and data on a regular hd, d:
If after time my c: has become bloated with appdata, unused folders in the users folder etc. How can I revert c: back to it's original state without changing d: ?
Can I do this with a restore point, or do I need another piece of software?

I had Win XP on 1 HDD & installed Win 7 on a different HDD. I think I accidentally did a dual boot install because Win 7 won't boot without the the XP disk connected to the motherboard.
That was fine until my XP drive died yesterday. Now Win 7 won't boot. The first time I tried to repair, Win 7 was not even seen. so I booted into diskpart and made the partition active. Now it could be seen as an OS.
Then I did a startup repair. It did whatever it does & when it was finished I restarted the pc but it didn't boot I went back to diskpart and confirmed the partition was active. I went back startup repair and tried again.
This time it said it could not detect a problem, but it still will not boot. What else can I do? My pc is homebuilt. Right now I have the 1 sata drive, 2.53 ghz cpu, 4gb ram, onboard video & sound

I have a computer I am trying to refurbish. The old hard drive failed. I purchased a new hard drive. The CD/DVD player on the computer does not work, but I am able to boot from a USB. I was able to install Ubuntu from USB with no problems and now have a new copy of windows 7, 32 bit (computer is also 32 bit). I have tried to boot from the windows copy on the USB drive using many different tutorials as well as using the windows USB/DVD download tool. Each time I boot from the usb stick, a screen comes up that says windows failed to start. It says it may be due to a hardware problem. All other solutions to this involve using the recovery CDs or partition which I am not able to because the CD/DVD drive is broken, and I would like to not have to buy another one.

I'm currently running a WD 500g with Windows 7 Ultimate x64 and a Seagate 250g with Windows XP Home Edition. I recently changed my BIOS boot order from the WD to the Seagate to see if I could still run XP. Turns out I can. My problem is that now I can't load Windows 7 back up on the other hard disk.Bear in mind that I have no other OS' loaded on any other partitions, and these HDDs are separate. The Seagate is IDE and the WD is Sata.I can load perfectly fine if I set the Seagate to load, but I get the infamous "Bootmgr is missing, Press Ctrl Alt Delete to restart" error msg when I try to boot win7.
I'm running a custom PC with a Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R mobo
nVidia GeForce GTS450
Seagate 250g Windows XP
Western Digital 500g Windows 7

I upgraded to Win 7 Ultimate from Win XP Pro after my OEM disk picked up a few more scratches than it needed.During a re-installation it partially installed the windows XP setup with an error message of 'HAL.DLL' missing.I believe the residual setup loader is causing problemS.My PC insists on trying to boot from CD/DVD regardless of what I select. If I select boot from CD/DVD with my new Windows 7 disk I get the SAME message as if I didn't select boot from DC/DVD: Windows failed to start. This could be from a recent hardware or software change.
1.Please insert your windows install disk and click restart
2.Change language setting and click next.
3.Click repair... etc.
If you don't have the disk contact admin....ect.

I select the ' older version' and the system gives me the same listed above error...I select 'windows 7' and, well.... here I am, posting this thread from my PC, Windows 7, updated, gageted and all running smoothly...Hibernate sometimes boots and sometimes shows the same error.....Start menu 'Shut down' and 'Restart' also don't work on the odd occasion....I researched and downloaded EasyBCD to delete the 'older version of windows' but it appears to have only 'deleted' it from Windows 7's 'eyes' because ultimately the thing is still showing on my OS choice menu and is evidently causing a few hiccups.

Long ago i updated my bluetooth adapter driver, and the caused malfunction. I downloaded the driver from Dell Support website (apparently there are 3 under 'Network', and i get a lucky shot) and the bluetooth is fucntioning once again. however i checked through the device manager and found '!' marks on Bluetooth Peripheral Device. something is not right. Recent windows update (automatically) has failed to install over and over again, hence prompting to redownload the same update every time i turn on the laptop. Specifically, its is 'security update for the .NET Framework 4 on Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7, and Windows Server 2008 R2: January 8, 2013 (KB2742595)'.. There is another update coming (also tagged as Important) but come to fail as well. So currently there is 2 pending updates. While im having these problem, the boot time has increases noticeably. Long black screen appears before the login page turn up. Some says this is related to device/driver error. im not sure myself. Very recently i have my Avast Antivirus not working (turned off) and every time i ask it to turn on or resume, nothing happens. It remain not-functioning and so, i uninstall Avast and adopt AVG Antivirus. i think this is around when i was installing the bluetooth driver from Dell.

I just wanted to document my ordeal here for two reasons: 1.) in order to share my experience and 2.) beacause after 36+ hours of attempting to find a solution to my problem I could NOT find one and did a few things myself to remedy and fix the situation. This experience needs to be shared in case someone else goes through this and like me, NONE of the suggested fixes work. After a failed windows 7 install using an upgrade disc (clean install, no previous OS - this is possible with the right sequence of installation, google it). I continually recieved the error "Bootmgr is missing press ctrl+alt+delete+ to restart".There are many walkthroughs on the internet detailing how to remedy this problem BUT all of them are assuming Windows has been successfully installed and that you can repair it using the install disc and clicking "repair" when putting it into the disc drive and loading it before booting. My problem of course was that the OS was not successfully installed, therefore I had no way to access the repair options.I removed the hard drive and put it into a working PC and it was detected; reformatted the drive, scanned it using Western Digital's (it's a WD Caviar Blue 500gb) software to check for drive health as I assumed the drive was bad. The drive was reformatted successfully and the long test revealed no issues, the drive was healthy. I put it back into the new rig, checked cables, replaced sata cords, powered on and "Bootmgr is missing press ctrl+alt+delete+ to restart"
Went into BIOS and made sure boot order was correct - it was.Used a piece of software meant to fix bootmgr issues (url...) - no luck.I went ahead and performed memtest86+ 4.21 and detected tens of thousands of errors in the ram. This narrowed it down. I replaced the ram with ram I know has no errors and booted up. "Bootmgr is missing press ctrl+alt+delete+ to restart".This is when I realized that it must be connected to the bad install and that before tossing this PC out of the window of a moving car, I should wipe the drive completely and start over, as something on the drive must be corrupted, despite the reformat and health of the drive. Using DBAN Boot and Nuke (http://www.dban.org/download) I wiped the drive completely (took 10 hours or so). I prayed this would solve my problems and guess what: IT DID! At this point after restarting after Boot and Nuke and putting in the upgrade disc and went forward with my installation NO "Bootmgr is missing press ctrl+alt+delete+ to restart" and the install went perfectly.

My computer was having some problems every time I booted it up. Upon start up, I would receive an error message saying "windows failed to start, a recent hardware or software change might have caused the problem" and would give me some options to pick from like Safe Mode options and Start Normally. I would click "start windows normally" and my computer would boot up normally and run just fine. But every time I turn my computer off, I come back the next day with the same error message. I tried running the windows repair option but it would never find anything.
I decided I would just perform a clean install and just be done with it, but after doing that, I tried booting my computer to have the SAME error message. Same thing happens, I just click start normally and it works fine. It's just a total hassle to have to deal with this error message every time I try turning my computer on. Since I performed the clean install, I have very little things re installed to the computer like Java and what not. I wouldn't think it would be Java because I have had that the entire time I have owned the computer and only recently got the error messages.

I had a dual boot with Windows 7 and Win8. I wanted to remove Win8 cause I was bored and didn't need it. I did everything right.
Dual Boot - Delete OS
But the boot manager failed. When I restarted I got an error saying that their is some invalid information. I didn't have the Win 7 disc, so I put the Win 8 disc and installed it in the partition that had win 8 before, hoping that it would recognized Win 7. But hasn't. So now I have a partition of Win 7 but it is not getting recognized.

So it all started last night. My computer was unresponsive, and after clicking "shut down" a few times to no avail, I decided to do a hard reset. I didn't think anything would happen, but afterwards it just wouldn't boot back up. It goes to the windows logo and stays there. I don't get any errors, it just hangs there. I have tried many things, so far nothing has worked.
I have tried booting into safe mode. This does not work, it gets stuck at classpnp.sys and stays there. I have tried booting from the windows 7 disc. This does not work, after it loads the disc it will hang at a black screen. I have tried switching from IDE to AHCI. This has worked, but not fixed the problem. When booting into safe mode it will crash instead of hanging.
When booting from the windows 7 disc I can almost reinstall windows, however I get the error "Windows could not format a partition on disk 1. The error occurred while preparing the partition selected for installation. Error code 0x80070057." When attempting to restore windows to a restore point I get the error "The system image restore failed. Error details: Windows backup failed to read from the recovery volume. (0x8078002F)"
I have tried connecting the SSD to a different windows 7 computer in a attempt to reformat it, however just plugging it in would give the same problem to that computer. So, is my SSD toast? Did I mess it up beyond repair? Now system repair will not hang on IDE, but still gives me the same errors. Also, now it says missing operating system. Not sure how that happened.

Just got a new Asus Zenbook UX31E and am having a certain problem where if I plug my external drive (Samsung S2 1TB, USB 3.0, 2.5") into the 3.0 port windows tries to install a driver for the new device but fails. Now the drive powers on when connected but wont load up as an accessible drive and is not found is disc management.I've tried the HDD successfully in another laptop with USB 3.0 and it works fine on my Zenbook's USB 2.0 port so I'm guessing there's no problem with the HDD itself. Also I have tried a small flash drive in the Zenbook's 3.0 port which worked fine.I have tried updating the USB 3.0 driver to the latest version via Asus' driver database but have got the same result.I would of thought with such a prestigious laptop someone else would of run across this problem but all my googling has turned up ziltch.

I have a pc that has been running windows 7 pro fine for a couple of years. Today it wont boot stopping with the message: "Windows failed to start.A recent hardware or software change might be the cause."
To fix the problem:
1.Insert windows installation disc and restart your computer
2.Choose your language settings and then click "next"
3.Click "repair your computer".
If you do not have this disc contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance.
Status: 0xc000000e
Info: The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible.
This machine has only one dvd drive and one hdd. I have checked the boot list in the bios settings and the cd drive is first then the hdd second. If I insert the windows 7 cd and press any key to boot from cd when prompted I still end up at the "windows failed to start " screen. At this point I have the option to select "Launch startup repair" or "start windows normally" but I cant select them, the machine just counts down and continues to try to launch startup repair and fails with the 0xc000000e error.
