Old XP Failed Boot Causing Error On Boot
Jun 8, 2012
I upgraded to Win 7 Ultimate from Win XP Pro after my OEM disk picked up a few more scratches than it needed.During a re-installation it partially installed the windows XP setup with an error message of 'HAL.DLL' missing.I believe the residual setup loader is causing problemS.My PC insists on trying to boot from CD/DVD regardless of what I select. If I select boot from CD/DVD with my new Windows 7 disk I get the SAME message as if I didn't select boot from DC/DVD: Windows failed to start. This could be from a recent hardware or software change.
1.Please insert your windows install disk and click restart
2.Change language setting and click next.
3.Click repair... etc.
If you don't have the disk contact admin....ect.
File$LDR$
Status 0xc000000f
info: Selected entry not added/ application is missing or corrupt.
Enter Escape.
Escape = reboot to error listed above...
Enter = OS choice menu with:
1. 'windows 7'
2 'older verion of windows'
I select the ' older version' and the system gives me the same listed above error...I select 'windows 7' and, well.... here I am, posting this thread from my PC, Windows 7, updated, gageted and all running smoothly...Hibernate sometimes boots and sometimes shows the same error.....Start menu 'Shut down' and 'Restart' also don't work on the odd occasion....I researched and downloaded EasyBCD to delete the 'older version of windows' but it appears to have only 'deleted' it from Windows 7's 'eyes' because ultimately the thing is still showing on my OS choice menu and is evidently causing a few hiccups.

Okay, so this just happened out of nowhere. Nothing seems to have led up to this -- the system booted and shut down successfully, and no software updates or installs were done during the period of time it was on when it was last working. I've attempted many things, but none seem to work. /ScanOs reports no OS detected, while startup repair said the OS was booted successfully. bcdedit also shows no directories linked to "unknown". CHKDSK reports no bad sectors, so such can be discarded. This happens every time I attempt to boot to Windows 7 (Home Edition, x64). I have a copy of Fedora 17 set to dualboot with it

I had Win XP on 1 HDD & installed Win 7 on a different HDD. I think I accidentally did a dual boot install because Win 7 won't boot without the the XP disk connected to the motherboard.
That was fine until my XP drive died yesterday. Now Win 7 won't boot. The first time I tried to repair, Win 7 was not even seen. so I booted into diskpart and made the partition active. Now it could be seen as an OS.
Then I did a startup repair. It did whatever it does & when it was finished I restarted the pc but it didn't boot I went back to diskpart and confirmed the partition was active. I went back startup repair and tried again.
This time it said it could not detect a problem, but it still will not boot. What else can I do? My pc is homebuilt. Right now I have the 1 sata drive, 2.53 ghz cpu, 4gb ram, onboard video & sound

A few days ago, my computer stopped booting up. The splash screen for the mobo showed up, and then I would get a black screen w/ a white flashing cursor and nothing else. I put in my Win7 install disc to try to do a repair, and eventually figured out that if I change my boot sequence in the BIOS so that it goes to the DVD drive 1st and the boot hard drive last, it boots up just fine. I reset to the last recovery point, changed the BIOS back so it would boot from the hard drive 1st, and everything thing worked fine... until it installed the latest Win7 updates. After that, I had the exact same problems. So I changed the BIOS again as a temporary solution, and then I noticed that the computer wasn't sleeping properly. It used to turn off the display, the hard drives, the case fans, etc. Now, it turns off everything EXCEPT the case fans... which pretty much defeats the purpose of putting it in sleep mode.

Asus P8P67Pro
Harware & software build around 6 months old
BIOS, Windows updates and Driver updates applied regularly.
A couple of weeks ago i had a BSOD. Since, when trying to boot, most of the time my monitor turns ON, OFF, ON, OFF, etc...for some time, very rarely leading to a successful boot. No problem accessing Recovery options or BIOS.sometimes (very rarely), it does boot up normally.I have tried everything i can think of (with my limited knowledge).

I had a very strange problem today when I was waking my machine up from hibernation. Here's my set up:
Windows 7 x64
Windows 7 is on a SSD drive
Apple Mac Pro
I also have two other drives in, one for OSX and one with an old Vista x64 on it. I mainly work in Win 7, I never shut this computer off, I just restart sometimes. But today I put it in hibernation. When I was supposed to wake it back up the win 7 drive had just disappeared. I booted in Vista 64 and had a look in the disk manager, it tells me that the SSD drive isn't initialized (see attached screenshot).
As you may guess I can't browse this disk, and it does not show up during boot up. I did try to start from the Windows 7 CD and do a recovery, but it can't find my Windows 7 installation and so I guess I can't repair. What I could try to recover? Since I can boot my old OSX and my old Vista I'm quite sure it's not the rest of the hardware, I figure it's the Windows 7 drive or maybe its MBR.

I cannot boot into Windows because it says that the file /boot/BCD is missing with an error code of 0x0000007. If I run Repair from my installation disk and in System Recovery Options, it says that it has detected problems and asks if I want to repair it. The items it wants to repair are: " The following startup option will be repaired:Name: {bootmgr}Identifier: {9DEA862C-5CDD-4E70-ACC1-F32B344D4795}
The following startup options will be added:
Name: Windows 7 Ultimate (recovered)
Path: Windows
Windows Device: Partition=C: (476938MB)
Name: Windows Recovery Environment (recovered)
Path: Recovery9426aa67-30ff-11e0-a348-506313b5e718Winre.wim
Windows Device: Partition=C: (476938MB)
A copy of the current boot configuration data will be saved as C:BootBCD.Backup.0002"If I click yes, it says that it cannot save the current settings for the BCD and refuses to continue. When I choose Startup Repair, it attempts to fix the problem but fails.
The problem details are:
Root cause found:
No OS files found on disk.
Repair action: Partition table repair
Result: Failed. Error code: 0x3bc3
I think that this is because Startup Repair is trying to fix the thumbdrive that I keep my Windows 7 install files in. I am overseas now and as my computer does not have an internal optical disk drive and my external drive is back home, thus using my thumbdrive is the only way to access the repair console.
I tried running a few commands, namely:
bootrec /fixmbr
bootrec /fixboot
bootrec /rebuildbcd
Fixmbr and fixboot work, but when I run RebuildBCD, it detects C:Windows as having a Windows installation, but if I type Y(yes) or A(all), it says that the requested system device cannot be found.

I Installed Acronis Disk Director Suite 10.1 yesterday on my Windows 7 and got this problem when it boots up I get the option to choose OS. Windows failed to start. A Recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:
1. Insert your windows installation disc and restart your computer.
2. Choose your langugae settings, and then click next
3. Click "repair your computer."
Status: 0xc000000e
Info: The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible.
Then I tried to run the Windows 7 installation disk, I go to the cmd prompt and run the
DISKPART
diskpart
list disk
select Disk X (X=disk where I installed all the OS, should be Disk 0)
list partition
select Partition X (X=partition containing OSX)
Virtual Disk Service error:
The pack is not online
and then i run the Bootrec /ScanOS, it came with 0 identified Windows Installations, this is why I come into the cmd prompt as I could not select the installed OS.
I've tried that from bootable cd to repair the install but the partition of windows7 is not recognized still.

I have a laptop I bought a year ago on which a created a dual boot Win 7 (32bit)/Win XP SP3 install, each on a separate partition. It was my first Win 7/XP dual boot install, and my first personal system that I allowed to have a Win 7 install on it at all, so although I have plenty of experience working on pretty much every previous version of Windows, I have very little experience with Win 7 and dual boot configs.
Today about 2 hours ago my audio spontaneously stopped worked for no good reason, so after shutting down each program to see if that cured it (which it didn't), I restarted the system. Out of the blue, for the first time I've ever experienced it, I received the msg "MBR Error 1" - Press any key to boot from floppy. I don't have a floppy of course on my laptop, and if I press any key I simply get the same msg. I turned the system off for a few minutes to make sure it was a good cold boot, but every time I still get the same msg. I tried switching the BIOS setting from IDE to AHCI (IDE is required for XP to boot, AHCI required for Win 7), but I still get the same error msg before I'm even prompted with the OS boot selection, so it made no difference of course.
I looked up this issue and found various suggestions, but none of the ones I found took into consideration a dual boot config., they were all Win 7 specific solutions. I don't what to try and repair the MBR only to have it screw up my dual boot config and be unable to access XP, which is what I use almost exclusively, nor do i want to lose access to Win 7 if at all possible.
I had a backup HD of my complete system that I saved several months ago when I upgraded my HD, and I periodically refresh the most important files on it, so I'm currently running on the laptop in question using my old HD, and it's working just fine. Worst case I can just clone my old HD to my newer HD that's screwed up, but I'll still lose a lot of changes I've made to the OS since I upgraded the HD and have to reinstall and config a number of programs, so that's my last option. I'll also have to back up about 200GB of data from the newer HD which is much larger than my old HD, and then restore it back after the clone, something that will take a lot of time and unncessary effort if I can just fix the MBR.

I'm having a problem every time I power on the system. I'm dual booting vista ultimate with win 7 build 7100; with vista I have no problem, but with 7 every time I start the system the first boot attempt gives me the error 0xc000000e after the boot manager display: "the boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible".;after a reset the system boots 7 with no problems. Win 7 is installed in a brand new hd(seagate barracuda 1.5tb) and vista on a second hd.
I've search the web for people with a similar problem with no success. I've tryed already many solutions but the problem persists(latest bios for the motherboard, latest intel sata drivers, etc). I'm hoping that this could be a bug in win 7 instead of a hardware failure for the hd. Again, the strange thing is that this only happen after the power on. After that first error, no matter how many reboots, the system always boot without problems.

I've recently purchased a used A665-3DV6 Toshiba Satellite Laptop. It had the BIOS password problem. So I've jumped the CMOS and cleared the password. I've initiated the "out of box state" and it went through the whole process. When it was finished I shut down the computer. Then the next morning I booted the computer up and it stated "HDD Boot Failed". I tried running Factory reset again but there is only a blinking cursor on the top left hand corner of the screen.

My PC had a single hard drive with 300Gig. (I will refer to it as original HD64) Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit installed. Worked fine for a year or two. Eventually started crashing randomly, attempted lots of fixes but was reliably informed that it could be my hard drive. I decided I would be best with a new HDD and a fresh install. Bought a new hard drive. 250Gig (Will refer to it as new HD32). Unplugged originalHD64 from sata cable and power. Plugged in newHD32 into sata cable.
Inserted bootable USB flash drive with windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit on it. Went through full install including partition creation etc. Install crashed part way through but I think the dog knocked the power lead. Restarted install. Everything seemed to install fine. Plugged in original HD64 into second sata slot. Changed boot priority to New HD32. Booted fine.
Clicked on >Computer and found new HD32 as C: drive and Old HD64 as D: as I wanted it to be.
So far so good. But on next boot the CHKDSK thing ran. Then it booted ok. CHKDSK ran on next boot also. Then I managed too boot normally but realised there were a couple of things not working properly in the fresh install. Things like Windows Picture viewer would not open anything at all and a couple of other issues. And it was especially annoying that CHKDSK kept running. I asked for advice and was told that I should probably just format the new HD32 and resintall from fresh incase the install had somehow gone wrong.
So, I changed the boot order to Old HD64 and logged into my old windows OS which I had left installed in case anything went wrong. From there I navigated to disk management and formatted and repartitioned the NEW HD32 disk. Now I unplugged Old HD64. Plugged in bootable USB flash drive and tried to follow the exact same steps as I followed last time. But instead of going through the windows install I just get ... "The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible" (and some other text viewable in the following link).
Here is an example image of the screen I get... The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible error 0xc000000f on HP Notebooks - Tricks Guide
So I reboot.
Press F8 to select boot device.
Choose USB flash drive.
I have unplugged the New HD32 and plugged in the old HD64 and done the same thing just to test if its a HD issue but I get the same problem.

I'm having a peculiar problem that just started yesterday out of the blue. Suddenly when I boot up in Windows 7 (64-bit), there's always an open dat file titled "win403700" that greets me on my desktop. It's of no use to me, since it's filled with lines and lines of code that are completely encrypted in notepad. After running CCleaner to clean out my registry and hard drive, followed by over two hours of sytematically uninstalling programs, disabling startup items, and then finally moving on to msconfig items under the services tab, I was able to determine that "Windows Event Log" is what causes this to pop open with each new startup. (I assume everyone has it enabled under msconfig > services.)Would anyone know why it is doing this? If I can just disable it and forget about it I will, but based on what I'm reading here, it appears to be an essential process for updating Windows: Windows Event Log - Process and Service wiki?

I have a HP G71-329WM running Windows 7 and I believe it recently updated windows via windows update. I attempted to turn on my computer and it would not boot, freezing on the start up screen. I managed to resolve this initial problem by going through safe mode and doing a system restore to a previous state. However, the laptop now boots up but does not recognize any networks and the wireless adapter cannot be recognised, meaning it only connections VIA ethernet cable. I have tried re-installing the drivers for the wireless adapter but this has not resolved the issue. Short of re-formatting (which I really don't want to do) I'm lost for how this can be resolved.

I have a computer I am trying to refurbish. The old hard drive failed. I purchased a new hard drive. The CD/DVD player on the computer does not work, but I am able to boot from a USB. I was able to install Ubuntu from USB with no problems and now have a new copy of windows 7, 32 bit (computer is also 32 bit). I have tried to boot from the windows copy on the USB drive using many different tutorials as well as using the windows USB/DVD download tool. Each time I boot from the usb stick, a screen comes up that says windows failed to start. It says it may be due to a hardware problem. All other solutions to this involve using the recovery CDs or partition which I am not able to because the CD/DVD drive is broken, and I would like to not have to buy another one.

Long ago i updated my bluetooth adapter driver, and the caused malfunction. I downloaded the driver from Dell Support website (apparently there are 3 under 'Network', and i get a lucky shot) and the bluetooth is fucntioning once again. however i checked through the device manager and found '!' marks on Bluetooth Peripheral Device. something is not right. Recent windows update (automatically) has failed to install over and over again, hence prompting to redownload the same update every time i turn on the laptop. Specifically, its is 'security update for the .NET Framework 4 on Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7, and Windows Server 2008 R2: January 8, 2013 (KB2742595)'.. There is another update coming (also tagged as Important) but come to fail as well. So currently there is 2 pending updates. While im having these problem, the boot time has increases noticeably. Long black screen appears before the login page turn up. Some says this is related to device/driver error. im not sure myself. Very recently i have my Avast Antivirus not working (turned off) and every time i ask it to turn on or resume, nothing happens. It remain not-functioning and so, i uninstall Avast and adopt AVG Antivirus. i think this is around when i was installing the bluetooth driver from Dell.
