Screen Does Not Resume On Resume From Sleep?
Oct 17, 2012
I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium SP 1 64-bit on a HP 620 (just a year old).
Lately, whenever I return to the laptop having left it alone for some time (Power Management set to 'Sleep' after 10 mins), and try to resume, I can hear the it resuming (fans etc.), however, the screen remains completely black.
The only solution is to shut down the system manually and boot it up again.

I'm having a problem where if my laptop is idle and the screen goes black, I can't get it to resume. I try moving the mouse and hitting buttons, but nothing happens. I have to completely shut the PC off and start it again. Also, if I put it to sleep, the same thing happens (it goes black but doesn't sleep or resume). My drivers are all up to date but it still happens.

I currently run Windows 7 ultimate 64bit, 8gig ram, intel i7-2600k cpu, and my OS runs on an OCZ SSD (all specs are in my profile)Sleep mode is set to S3 in BIOS, I have hibernation disabled (so no hibernation.sys file on my c drive)When I put my computer to sleep then immediately wake it up, the login screen shows instantly, I type in my pass and it loads in like 0.5 seconds. When I put my computer to sleep but wait for around 1-2 hrs before waking it, it shows the login screen instantly but after i hit login, it gives me the Welcome spinning circle thingy for like 20 seconds before I can see my desktop. That's like longer than my entire boot-up time excluding POST.Event viewer doesnt show any performance delay, and I dont think my OS drive (OCZ vertex 2) has a cache so I have it disabled. I'm sure all my mobo drivers and graphic drivers are up to date.

I have a Lenovo ThinkPad T400 running a fresh install of Win7 Pro x64 with SP1. I did the clean install as normal, getting necessary drivers from Lenovo and leaving the rest to Windows. In the past this has worked well.
This time I am having an issue where resuming from sleep or hibernate takes longer than starting the system from shutdown. Looking at the event logs it seems to be driver related. I open the lid, press the power button, and I get nothing other than a power light, no HDD access light as usual. This usually takes quite a while. Once I get to the logon screen, it is unresponsive to both password and fingerprint reader. It sits like that for a while and than after logging on everything works fine.
The machine has ran Norton Internet Security 2012 from day 1 and I have no reason to believe that this is malware related.
I have saved the "Diagnostics-Performance" section of event viewer an EVTX file which should be attached to this post. It will open in event viewer.
EDIT: It says I am not permitted to upload this kind of file? I have uploaded it to MS SkyDrive instead. [URL]

Every time I put my computer to sleep or hibernate and wake it up, the computer resumes to a screen stating "Windows failed to shut down correctly" A recent hardware or software change might be the cause and I'm asked to choose how to restart.Quite similar to the screen I would get after a crash.

My laptop (Dell Vostro V13) is stuck in some kind of limbo. It went into sleep mode and won't wake up fully! It "resumes" the boot-up sequence right up until the four windows colors do their characteristic swirl animation - then the screen goes black.I can't seem to force a fresh restart b/c every time I power off and back on, the laptop tries to *resume* and gets stuck again.Hitting F2 and F12 allows me to run bios and memory tests, but to no avail. The laptop always attempts a resume. How do I break this sleep-resume cycle and do a fresh restart? Reinstalling the OS is out of the question (too many important files will be erased

Although I found some issues that are almost similar, nothing seems to really solves the issue I have.
Build 7068, x64 freezes after a resume from sleep (S3). The desktop image is visible but the system totally hangs. Only a hard power down works.
I use two USB devices (keyboard and remote) and both can resume the system from sleep. Strangly the system did work for the first day and now even a clean install fails on resume...?
Vista x86, had no issues at all, rock solid operation for almost a year.
System config:
Gigabyte EP45ds4 (BIOS P9), E8400, ATI HD2600pro (this card only works with driver 8.12 in Vista SP2 compatibility mode to enable svideo output), HVR2200.

I have a weird issue with my wireless adapters. I will put my computer to sleep and then resume my work a few hours later, when the computer wakes up both wireless adapters are disabled and I have to go into adapter settings to re-enable them. My adapters are a netgear wna1100 usb adapter and an azio pci card adapter.

I am having some issues with Windows and resuming from sleep. I have an overclock of 4.2 GHz and everything works great, but after I resume windows from sleep, the clock drops to normal Turbo Boost Ratios ranging from 3.4 to 3.8. Naturally after a restart the clock goes back to 4.2 as if nothing ever happened.
Note: I have tried Disabling various power functions in the BIOS such as EIST, C1E, etc.

I am using windows 7 ultimate and facing great problem. Whenever I put my PC to sleep, on resuming it crashes giving a blue screen of death message. I am never able to put my PC on sleep which quite inconvenient. Actually my video card does not support windows 7 aero or there are no WDDM drivers available for my card which is ATI RADEON 9250. I am ready to upload any crash minidump files or any other log files. Also tell me if any WDDM drivers are there for my video card as I am not able to get them anywhere. Is this video card the only reason for the problem

Have a Windows 7 PC working fine for 6 months, now fails to resume from sleep every time. On attempting to resume the PC appears to go through a powering up loop (Hard disk and fan spin up) which then goes off and repeats indefinitely till you force the power off by holding town power button. When changing 'allow hybrid sleep' in Power Settings to disable; it cured it for a few days. The issue came back, so tried enabling this setting - same result. Disabled again, same result.Update Intel Graphics Drivers to latest. Fixed the issue again, just for a few days.

I installed Windows 7 x64 on my HTPC and have found that after resuming from S3 sleep, my media drive (1TB WD 10EACS) is missing. The drive is not seen in Disk Management and is not discovered when I scan for new hardware. The only way to get the hard drive back is to reboot. Power and data cables are secure. This exact build did not have this issue when running Vista. Win7 is the only change. If I enter S3 and then immediately wake the system the HDD is still there. The problem seems to occur when the HTPC is in standby for a longer period. like overnight.
This is on a GA-MA69GM-S2H motherboard with the SB600 SATA controller running the latest drivers in AHCI mode. I switched to IDE mode and the problem has not occurred for two days. (/crosses fingers)
This is a critical flaw for HTPC use since S3 sleep is a must. My HTPC missed several TV recordings because when it woke up my media drive was gone and I'd like to prevent this from happening again. (This really reduces the WAF!)
I posted on the TechNet forum with others having the same problem here: HDD not waking from sleep Windows 7 RTM?
I thought I'd open the topic for discussion here at Tom's since the forum here is more robust. Anyone else observing this behavior in Windows 7? Does anyone know of a fix for AHCI mode?

I have Win7 on my desktop PC, and sometimes when I start up the computer, it won't have any internet access. On more rare occasions, it will do the same thing when I resume from Sleep. Windows usually solves the problem by itself, but it that takes about a minute or so.
I know it's not the modem or the router, becuz other computers on my wi-fi network can access the internet even when the main PC can't. I did a search and found a few things about reinstalling Office 2010 or disabling IPv6, but that doesn't work for some people. Those posts are also 3-4yrs old, so it seems like there should have been patches

i have a bit of "weird" problem, that is, my netbook cannot resume properly from sleep BUT hybernation works fine. and the strange thing is, it was a while, lets say couple of months i didnt use sleep mode which used to work perfectly, all latest security updates have been done, etc etc...the computer goes properly into standby (hard disk saves files to memory?) and then the standby led blinks correctly. when i hit any key, the hard drive loads something for about 3-4 seconds, then Caps lock and Scroll Lock lights on the keyboard turn on (as if it was the check when you boot the pc) and then they stay stuck on and everything is idle, i have tried to leave the computer there 5 minutes, nothing happened, those 2 lights are stuck on... to get the pc back on i have to long press the power button so forcing a reset, when comp boots, it will detect something went wrong asking me what i want to do, i choose "boot normally" and is back up, this is what i have in the admin error log if that can give any hint, in referse order (newer first): 0 Your computer was not assigned an address from the network (by the DHCP Server) for the Network Card with network address 0x22224330DF61. The following error occurred: 0x79. Your computer will continue to try and obtain an address on its own from the network address (DHCP) server.
1 The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load: cdrom
2 Engine and VDF could not be loaded from installation directory. Engine and VDF will be loaded from a backup copy. >> AVIRA
3 The print spooler cannot start because the PrinterBusEnumerator could not start. Error code 0x490. This can occur because of system instability or a lack of system resources.
4 Audit events have been dropped by the transport. 0
5 The driver DriverWUDFRd failed to load for the device USBVID_147E&PID_10005&9195cc&1&1. Warning, Kernel PnP
6 The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly. CRITICAL, KERNEL POWER
7 The previous system shutdown at 07:28:23 on 09/03/2012 was unexpected.so perhaps keyboard problem? see below: the ONLY relevant hardware change i did recently was to swap keyboard with an OEM one as the stock one was kaput (though i still have it for a test which i have to do this evening). i am talking about the very onboard keyboard, not an external one, i purchased a OEM compatible one that works perfectly but to be precise is not the original.on startup i have avira, battery care (beta version) and the wireless utility, always had them.i have tried the following which haven'ty made ANY difference:
- changing Power options, restored "defaults", changed hybrid sleep on/off
- BIOS is useless as there's no power management options, is a netbook.
- roll back / reinstalled Nvidia video drivers
- my netbook has 2 onboard video cards, an nvidia and an integrated intel, i tested both configurations but the problem is IDENTICAL therefore i would skip the "video card problem" if that makes sense...

Occasionally, when resume from hibernation/suspend, display brightness control doesn't work. Means that Fn + F2,F3 doesn't work, change from Windows Power Options doesn't work, change from intel graphic doesn't work. If I have to restart some services to get it working? It's occasional and I can't find anything exact in EventLog. My system is HP Probook 4230s with Core i5-2410 with intel HD3000. Latest patches on both Win 7 Pro 32-bit and intel driver. Restart machines solve the problem, re-hibernate or re-suspend machine occasionally solve the problem, but mostly not.

Is it possible to set a welcome screen on resume? I know that on display properties there is an option to set a logon screen on resume, but I would like to get a welcome screen.Actually, I'm pretty sure that my settings were like that till yesterday - after 10 minutes of inactivity my display would turn off, and then on resume I would get a welcome screen.

I'm running windows 7 pro 64-bit and whenever my asus U31F goes into hibernate and i try to system resume, it takes over 5 minutes. The screen freezes on just saying system resume for a minute or two, then as the coloured balls that come in to make the windows logo - they come in frame by frame, pausing for ages on each frame. This whole process means i have to hard reset my computer if i need it quickly and is really really starting to annoy me. Is there anything i can do???Note: On further inspection - i've realised that the drive doesn't start spinning while the screen is freezed, and then when it does that's aboutwhen they balls start to come into the screen.

I just installed windows 7. I am the only user of this computer, and have disabled the need to enter a password. But I want to get rid of the blue background with my picture, which needs to be clicked on to resume, every time my screen goes black (which happens if I don't use the computer for a few minutes, don't know what does this). Why should I have this blue screen and need to click my picture if I am the only possible user? I did delete an account with some funny name that I did not create, but I can not delete the administrator and guest accounts. When I have to click my picture, it is the only picture.

Whenever my machine sleeps/hibernates on its own, for battery or whatever, the display doesn't come back upon resume. The O/S comes up and I can actually ctl-alt-del and hear myself log in, but I cannot see anything.
I think I am having an ATI Mobility FireGL V5200 driver issues on Windows 7, but I've not seen any updated driver. Also I tried uninstalling the driving and running a less than ideal default windows display driver which works fine, but eventually gets overwritten by windows update with the latest and faulty driver.
I have to power down and potentially lose work to get the display back. If i self sleep/hibernate the machine, it comes back fine. It's only when after some time on battery or if its sleeps due to inactivity that this happens.
I see a bunch of Linux/Ubuntu wikis on workarounds but nothing for Win 7 so far.

My computer wont resume with windows resume loader. Anytime i start the computer from a shutdown or hibernation/sleep it gives me the option of continue with system resume or delete restoration data and proceed to system boot menu. If i click continue with resume it gives a black screen with this "_" in the upper left corner and never loads. It doesn't let me go back to what i was doing upon using hibernate, sleep, or anything that would save what i was doing.

I've been searching for a solution to this one for a while, and many people seem to have similar issues, but with subtle differences.
For me, the are occasions when I can't get windows to resume. Basically, it seems like 3 out of 4 times I can bring the computer from sleep or hibernation just fine, but the fourth time, the monitor will turn on, try and find a video feed, but find nothing, and then just go to sleep. I hold the power button until the comp powers off, then try again.
It again tries to resume, but this time, I only get a black screen with the blinking white cursor. I shut it off again, and this time it asks me if I want to try again or delete the restoration data and continue to windows.
There doesn't seem to be any pattern to this. It SEEMS like every fourth time it does this, but I'm not sure. There are no other major issues with this installation. I have the entire computer hooked up to a surge protector. If I press any keys when I'm trying to get it to resume, nothing happens

I tried hitting the on off button. Says windows is resuming but nothing happens and screen goes black. Hear fans come on. Last night I had recovered a Word Document Office 2010 and not saved it. Son logged off and recovery file was created last night. Was able to get on this morning and recoved the document, but never saved or named it. I may have closed the laptop lid. Not sure if that makes laptop go into sleep mode or hybernate.F2 setup and F12 reboot are available options when the Resuming window come up. Then that disappears and screen is blank. Makes sounds like it will come up but it doesn't.Saw an earlier post that said: If its trying to resume then it should give you an option to either
1) Continue w/ system resume, or
2) Delete restoration data and proceed to system boot
Try option 2.If you are not given this choice, restart the computer manually and start hitting F8 about once a second until you get to a selection screen. Choose to start windows normally and let us know how it goes.I tried hitting F8 and nothing happens. Then I saw another post that said to hit F12 and run the diagnostics... that is what I am doing now. It is in the prediagnostics now and said the next test is 30 minutes. All tests were passed and it is doing memory checks. Other post said it ran all night.Do you need to go through all the diagnostics to be able to use F8?Or will I need to turn the computer off and on again and see the resuming screen and then hit F8?
