Firewall Advanced Setup
Feb 11, 2009I'm looking for some help with some Windows Firewall advanced settings. I've already downloaded Vista Firewall Control to simplify the firewall setup, and its really doing what I want (asking me for any inbound and outbound connections), but the free version doesn't allow control over general network access (at least not that I can find so far). I need to get my Windows 7 computer to recognize my WinXP in the network screen, something that I can't seem to do without making some special rules in the firewall settings.
I've already turned off "password protected sharing" and set the "send password" option in gpedit.msc to enabled... settings which worked well in a previous install (AVG removed my access to folder options so I had to reinstall), but I can't seem to get to work now that I've installed VFC. So I guess I need to know what "rules" I need to set up to retain the strict control over inbound/outbound connections that I've got with VFC, but still allow easy network access between the 2-3 computers on my router.
Advanced Firewall Block All But IE And Firefox
May 14, 2009I have blocked all outbound traffic in the advanced firewall window and have tried to make a rule to allow Internet Explorer and Firefox through but with no joy. I have looked through previous posts but couldnt find an answer.
I have tried the Sphinx software but I don’t really need that or really want it. I just want to let browsers, anti virus and windows update through. I used to let windows update on vista through by allowing svchost through but only allowing the update service.
I allowed TCP port 80 through but that just let’s most things through.
The process I did was create a new outbound rule, choose program path, choose allow (not block by default), apply to all profiles and then name the rule. But it just wont go through so I am wondering what I am doing/not doing?!
I have also tried the normal firewall window (control panel, windows firewall) and let firefox through but still didnt work for me.
Advanced Firewall Can It Inform Me Of Outgoing ?
Jul 27, 2009I just realized the firewall software is installed on Windows 7 is a vast improvement on the old XP day's! I was looking to use comdo or zone alarm however it looks like everything I would use is included in this built in firewall.
However I would like to know if anyone can tell me a way to have the firewall software PROMPT me each time any application tries to connect outside of my PC?
So I can set a rule and say yes allow this or deny this?

Like Rodney Dangerfield, Windows Firewall just don't get no respect. It didn't evolve appreciably in the transition from XP to Vista. It does its simple job well, but its lack of ambition makes it a punching bag for reviews of other, better personal firewalls. Mar 28, 2011Recently I got a Antivirus Antispyware virus on my computer, I ran Rkill and then Malwarebytes and it found the virus and I removed it. However now my Windows 7 Security Center firewall and my McAfee firewall will not turn on. With my Windows 7 Security center, when I try and turn it on it prompts me with a message that says 'Action center cannot turn firewall on, turn windows firewall on manually' so I click on that and I click the recommended settings and it gives me a message saying 'Windows firewall can't change some of your settings. Error code 0x80070422'. My McAfee fire wall will turn on for a second and then automatically turn off. I have tried many things and seeked for many solutions but so far none of them have worked.

May 9, 2009So I have started to use windows7 RC and it's build in firewall. Until now i was on win xp with eset firewall. Everything is ok so far except two things:
1.) There doesn't seem to be anything like learning mode for Windows 7 firewall, or is there? How em I supposed to make a rule for application if I don't know what port it needs to open? I know, one can use google, but this can get pretty annoying after a while. Log file also doesn't help much because it doesn't list application names. Is there some kind of 3rd party simple app which would monitor attepts for connection and tell me which port a specific application just tried to use so i could make a rule in windows firewall?
2.) It seems that Windows 7 firewall is creating inbound rules automatically (at least for local applications), can i turn this behavior off?
Current Security Settings Not Allowing To Open
Oct 10, 2012I ran Combofix without any problems and removed multiple items.I started my McAfee to run behind it this morning and it ran extremely slow.I ended up stopping it and attempted to go back to run combofix again tonight and even tried a few other downloads.I keep getting a message that my current security settings will not allow.I have already did a temporary shut down of McAfee to make sure that it was not interferring.I know that I still have atleast some sort of problem because the google search is still acting up.

GIS Mapping Program Download - Open File Security Warning
Oct 21, 2012Trying to download a GIS mapping program from Purdue Univ. Seems to download to my "Dwonloads" file. When I look at the Download folder it shows an icon with correct title, but I can't see any files when I double click on it. This is not a "file folder" icon. I get an "Open file Security Warning" pop up. Shows run or cancel. Hit run it brings up "Win Zip Self Extractor" pop up. I have already supposedly unzipped this into the downloads. Have been through the issues of downloading Google Earth and think I have worked this out.

Jan 22, 2013So my laptop was working fine last night, woke up this morning and this issue appeared. I'm guessing it's a virus (stupidly, I haven't installed an AVP on this machine yet). Anyways, I can't open anything. Doesn't matter where I try to open the program or file from. The load icon appears but nothing happens. I also can't access the task manager or shut down/log off/etc. from the start menu, I get a "Failure to display security and shut down options" error msg. I'm in safe mode with networking right now, which is allowing me to open programs. I've already tried a system restore but it didn't solve the problem.

Jun 9, 2011Everytime I restart the computer it boots into a repair mode,attempts to repair my computer, and then tells me "startup repair cannot repair this computer automatically". Why it's doing this I don't know,the system was working fine an hour ago.The only change I made was to attempt to make my RAID work, I rebooted, entered BIOS and changed my "Sata Operation Mode" to "RAID",then the problems started happening. I tried turning it back, even resetting BIOS defaults, but no go. During the boot up though I turned my comp off during the middle of windows loading, I wonder if that could have caused the problem?I know it's not recommended but it's something I've always done and never had a problem with.I've been trying to access my Advanced boot menu to start windows normally(perhaps it's stuck in some kind of repair cycle?) but pressing f8 does nothing, I've tried a thousand times.
I put in my Windows 7 disk and attempted a repair through there which halfway worked. When I boot up now it gives me two OS options to choose from, Windows and Windows 7 Home Premium (Recovered).The latter one boots up windows fine but all of my files are gone and it's telling me my copy of windows is not genuine! I had the majority of my data so it's not a huge deal to do a clean install but I would like to avoid that if possible.I'm using an asrock 890fx mobo with AMD processor.

Basically I have many computers in my home and I seem to have an issue with encryption and compatibility.I have.My Works PC - Dell Dimension 1100 Windows XP Pro My Works Laptop - Compaq Presario Windows XP Pro My Rig - Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit My Tablet PC - Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit My Partners Laptop - Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit My iPhone 4 My Rooter - D-Link DSL-2640R With the default settings in the rooter (Mixed WPA, WPA2) My iPhone, Works PC and Works Laptop connects to the wireless network no problem, it appears they are using WPA mode whilst connected. However my Windows 7 machines are all seeing the network as WPA2. When I attempt to connect to the network it fails on all Windows 7 Machines.I can only seem to connect the Windows 7 machines if I change from "Mixed WPA, WPA2" to "WPA2 Only" which then knocks out all the Windows XP machines However if I disable wireless encryption, which I don't particularly want to do. All the machines work correctly with no problems!I do have a function for "Guest Network" which broadcasts a 2nd separate SSID, but you cant use encryption on it. That could run the Windows 7 Machines but the problem is I don't know how secure it is.

Sep 15, 2012I'm currently in safe mode in my windows 7 laptop which I can only access this computer by. The reason is because when i try to boot windows regularly, I get past the login screen then to be pwned by some black screen with my cursor only displaying. I downloaded a software from IOBit called Advanced system care, then I ran a full system clean. I came back later to reset my laptop and encountered an update, I let it update. When the update was finished, I started getting the Black screen of death.
Things I tried:
- System restore (It couldn't find a restore due to the update)
- Uninstalling updates (No difference was made)
- The CTRL+ALT+DEL then some link for the fix (CTRL+ALT+DEL doesn't work)
- Start up repair (Nope, no difference)
- The /sfc command (It worked but, still no difference)
I'm think pretty much stuck as I don't have a Windows 7 CD, although I have a formatted USB, I'm considering downgrading to XP. But, I'm getting problems with that as well.
