I have a folder that I'd like to periodically mirror to an external hard disk. How can I easily copy the source to the target, deleting files now deleted in the source, updating files that have been changed in the source, and adding new files to the destination. Would an XCOPY with the appropriate set of switches do the trick - maybe something like
xcopy c:sourcedir d: argetdir /e /h /o

View 6 Replies View RelatedI've just recently realized that copying folders to a backup hard drive resets their "created" date. Should my computer ever crash, all my backup files will state to have just been created on that certain date. Me, being the organize-freak I am, have been looking for a solution so my backed up files can have the same time stamps as on my computer right now. I've done a little searching, and have found that people always recommend Robocopy. Problem is, I can't understand a word of the tutorials. How to run Robocopy to carry out what I want? And also just for the heck of it, is Robocopy the only solution? Is there some sort of back up program on Windows 7 that can do that?
View 3 Replies View RelatedLast week I've reinstalled my Windows 7 because my notebook was slow and I wanted to went back to the factory setting. I've picked my Seagate external HD (2TB) and moved everything I had into a folder called "[Acer]".
Well, I had some problems with external hard drives this year, I've lost many information from an external HD, and I found out that it was because I've connected this HD in a Macintosh. I really DON'T KNOW WHY, but every folder that I had opened in my Macintosh went CORRUPTED in Windows 7, with no chances to repair the files.
Since then, I haven't plugged my external hard drives into my Macintosh.
I don't know if it's a Windows 7 problem or a problem with my Seagate HD, but the quantity of issues that I had with this external HD since then was crazy. Every time I disconnected this HD and then connected again, Windows asked me to repair and scan the files. And the amount of time to scan everything was, like, one and a half hour... so it was bugging me a lot. But the real problem is: yesterday I've plugged my external HD and my backup folder (called "[Acer]" simply disappeared from the drive. I've tried to run "chkdsk E: /F", with no success.
Now I'm running a "chkdsk E: /R", and it will take me a lot of time, and I'm really not positive to recover my backup folder.
All the old folders are there, everything is fine, but this folder disappeared, only this folder (and everything that were inside of it) disappeared.
I've also tried Recuva (Recuva - Download) to recover my folder, but it haven't found it.
I have a 500 GB SimpleTech hard drive (outboard) that I recently discovered to be full. Upon exploring its contents, I discovered many backup files and have no idea how/why they were created. I deleted several of the older files to make room for files I wished to store, and then explored further. On the hard drive, I find one folder named HPLAPTOP01 and another named WindowsImageBackup, between them holding many GB worth of files with names: Backup Set yyyy-mm-dd xxxxxx. Is Win 7 creating these backups, or is the SimpleTech drive doing it?

View 2 Replies View RelatedWhen I access a certain folder in my hard disk, after 2-5 seconds I get a dialog box saying "windows explorer has stopped working" and I get two options "check online" and "restart windows explorer" then I copied that folder to another destination and I could access it but the following days the new destination also started giving the same problem. I used tools like "scan disk" and "defragmentation" but nothing worked. I use Windows 7 64 bit unlimited.
View 34 Replies View RelatedI have a system Image Backup of my C drive. It is located on a USB portable drive. I want to rename this backup. If I do rename it and later need to use it will I have problems?
That is, I renamed the folder from WindowsImageBackup to WindowsImageBackup_2009_11_03. If I ever needed to use it to restore a file, I'm supposing I can just change it back to WindowsImageBackup and all will be well. But this is a supposition on my part. I would like to find out now if there are problems, rather than later.
I am a little concerned because Windows 7 seems to be picky about the MediaID file. I wonder, for example, if I mount the backup after giving the WindowsImageBackup the new date specific name, I say, I wonder if this is going to affect MediaID. My nightmare is to think I am set up in case of an emergency, only to find that something like this is not in place.
My current problem is that it occasionally gives off a clicking noise, I am assuming that the problem is the HDD because there is nothing else that's moving in the computer (besdies the BD-ROM, but it doesn't count). I look onto the event viewer and every time this happens it shows an error in the log files. [code]

I try to copy to a folder named Backup on Drive D, but it wants to copy only files that have changed since my last copy.I have tried doing a 'send to' to Documents but it does the same thing. Now, I did not lose any data at all (the account's folder still exists, untouched, in the /Users folder), it is just the user account picture and log in information that are gone. I have no way (that I know of) of re-referencing it so that it appears on my log-in screen again.My issue is that I effectively lost some programs and all configuration files that were exclusively associated with that account. Which is years of config data that I would HATE to have to do again. My questions are as follows (which are two sides of the same coin really).
Is there some way to re-reference this user account so it shows up and loads up like normal on windows login once again? (The system displays it as "User Unknown")f not, is there something that I can do with the /AppData folders of the new (recently created) and old ("deleted") accounts to make my new account be just like the old one?
I just want to share my problem regarding with the folder copying with the same permissions. Here's the scenario I installed domain server in my company and create a users ofcourse and in client pc we make 2 partitions in it(hard drive) C & D on drive D I make a folder Users with the permissions.
- C Drive OS Installed and basic programs
- D Drive (with Users folder)
This is where I want to put the profiling on every users login on a client pc. My problem is:
1. How can I copy the Users folder in every client pc with the same permissions so I don't need to set in one by one on a client pc.
2. If there's a software or simple program that can do such thing transferring a folder to another pc over network with the same permission.
First off, hopefully everyone's not too "Windows 7 student upgrade" questioned out (I've been lurking and reading for a while)... I sort of have one more, which I haven't seen addressed here or elsewhere.
My download and installation of Windows 7 worked just fine, but I neglected to create/burn an ISO boot disk before running the upgrade. I ran a backup and created a system disk DVD in Windows 7, but I've been told that's different than a boot disk and I should make one of those too.
My question is, can I just burn a friends copy of the Windows 7 Upgrade DVD and if so, how? (again, 7 is already installed on my computer and running great...)
I'm trying to transfer my boot drive/c: drive to another disk (actually, a raid 0 array of x2 500Gb disks) by creating an image of it, and i'm having trouble doing it using the system image recovery profram within W7. Can this actually be achieved or do I need to use a third party program?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI just did an install of W7 on a new partition. I was trying to carry my Firefox settings from XP to the new install in W7. I followed some instructions I found online and copied the Profile folder for FF and merged/replaced it with the one in W7.Now the Mozilla Profiles folder is read only, and I get an "Access Denied" message if I try to change it. I also can not "take ownership" of the folder or change any of the security options.

I want the files to remain in their original location, but have some kind of folder or structure where I can group the folders so that when I need to copy them, it is a simple matter of selecting one folder and copying it to the USB drive. (See WT1230: Batch File Converter for PowerPoint for Windows 95). Yes, the utility is intended for Win95, but I'd like to see if I can get it running in XP Mode. The utility installation instructions ask that I copy 2 files to the "Windows/system" folder. Of course, these instructions were written for Win95, not XP, let alone XP Mode. Still... if I copy the files, the core executable runs fine, but it can't find the 2 files that should be in "Windows/System". So, I gather XP Mode must have its own Windows/System folder.

I know I can clone the drives onto two separate partitions of my new drive, and then do a partition merge and resize to fill up all the free space. Or I can turn on view hidden and system files and simply drag & drop the contents of both drives to my new one.
View 2 Replies View RelatedFor some reason, the transfer rate on my 2TB Western Digital internal hard drive has dropped through the floor. I'm not sure what has happened but when when I try to copy files on HD I'm only getting a maximum transfer speed of 4MB/second, which is abysmal. For example, as I write I'm doing a test copy of a folder (to another folder on the same drive) containing 90 gig of misc. files. Windows is reporting that this transfer will take around one day to complete!
I error checked the drive and it came up healthy, and in all other areas, it seems to be working fine. All these problems seem to have started since I decided to reformat the hard drive and reinstall Window, a job which I've done on this particular setup at least a couple of dozen times before with no problems at all. I must say though that installing Windows was SLOOOW this time though, a lot slower than normal, and I'd say it took about 3 times as long to do as normal.

its been a long time since i last posted about my bsod and after i fixed them i began to get more of these. the only way i can replicate the problem is when i move or copy+paste files in the computer, mostly if it is from my computer to a external hardrive or usb... i attached the latest minidump file i got 021412-15958-01.zip

I Image my C drive on the 2nd partition of the same drive. I then copied the image to an external drive. If I lose my drive that my C drive is on and then replace it with a new drive can I Image from my external drive to the new Hard drive and it will be the same size and make? The reason for this question is my image will be coming from a different drive than it was image to.
