'Access Denied' After Copying A Folder From Old XP To Windows 7
Dec 26, 2012
I just did an install of W7 on a new partition. I was trying to carry my Firefox settings from XP to the new install in W7. I followed some instructions I found online and copied the Profile folder for FF and merged/replaced it with the one in W7.Now the Mozilla Profiles folder is read only, and I get an "Access Denied" message if I try to change it. I also can not "take ownership" of the folder or change any of the security options.

I'd like to put a .cmd file in my c:Documents and SettingsAll UsersStart MenuProgramsStartup directory, but Documents and Settings has a lock on it and tells me "Access denied" when I click on it. Is this a job for "Take Ownership" or is there another way? The instructions for "Take Ownership" say not to use it on the C drive, but it's not clear if that applies to the whole drive, or individual files/folders on it.

i have a media server set up where i store all my media files so they are shared with my household. The problem is that when i try and do anything in the shared folder (mapped as a network drive) i get a "destination folder access denied: you need permission to perform this action). All OS's is Windows 7 Pro.single shared(called Shared) folder with sub-folders where the administrator group is owner and the user credentials i use to log on the mapped network drive with are member of the administrator group. every member of the household have a different username.i have tried disabling UAC, adding the user directly to the folder with full permissions and still no dice.i am able to play the media files but if i want to edit a file or make a new folder i get the access denied error.

I copied a folder with C# .NET programs from my Windows XP machine to my new Windows 7 machine. However, on Windows 7 the folder has a lock symbol on its folder icon and I can't use any of the programs in it, although I can browse the folder and subfolders within it.I right-clicked on the folder and checked permissions. They were all grayed out.I added my individual username and selected Full Control, and the check marks for that username are now in full black (not grayed out). I went into Advanced and selected "Replace all child object permissions with inheritable permissions from this object" which is unchecked by default. I clicked "Apply" and "OK." But I still can't use any programs in subfolders, and the root folder still have a lock symbol on it. The propagation did not take effect, as all security checkmarks are grayed out on subfolders.

I have just reinstalled my pc to a dual boot system which has 3 separate hdds. Window xp on one drive windows 7 ultimate on one drive and the other is a slave for backups. On the win7 install I ended up with a folder called "program files" and a folder called "program files (x86)". Since everything was being installed into the "x86" folder, Idecided to move the other one to see if it was needed. When I discovered it was needed and certain programs wouldn't work I put it back. However for some reason I didn't just put it back I copied and pasted it back. so now i have 3 "program files" folders! I now want to delete the duplicate but no matter what I do it won't go, access is denied! I have renamed it and moved it so it is now jus sitting on my win7 desktop, staring at me!
Methods I have tried are:
Reset all permissions/attributes
Boot into xp and delete from there.
Boot from a live xp disc.
Can't move folder onto another drive.
Run as administrator then get message saying "permission from trusted installer needed"
Tried the rd/s/q command in win7, xp and at boot up.
Safe mode.
And have tried various programs, killbox etc.

I just recently moved a folder out of a larger folder. The larger folder was part of the video library. Now when I got to the video library the folder I moved out of it is still there but now it won't let me open it or delete it. I believe it is empty because the new version is where it is supposed to be with no problems but I'd like to get the bad folder out of my video library. The error tells me that the folder is not available and Access denied

I never had this issue with Vista 64, I have my windows 7 always updated to the latest.. heck this even happens on a system that has just been formatted. I have no special access restrictions placed on my system.

I have been a computer consultant for decades ans I have NEVER heard this simple, singular issue addressed with other than MS pros cattily pretending to explain it away in words that mean nothing to the rest of us.I have had to radically emasculate several networks of security issues in order to get beyond this absurd barrier to the transfer of files over even the most simplistic of networks The pompous and non-assistive pretentious BS that MS experts vomit all over the web only adds insult to injury.I have two computers, a desktop and a notebook. Both are running Win 7 Home Premium. They both can see and use the files on the other but I CANNOT COPY OR MOVE ANY FILES FROM ONE TO THE ANOTHER.I would be delighted to have someone tell me how I might accomplish that/ they are even empowered to include in their explanation what a complete idiot I am not to have known how to do that before now.Whip me. Shame me before the world for my inability to understand how I might accomplish a task that should be a basic function of any network connectivity, but stop using such cryptic and unintelligible terms to describe the indescribable methodology as to pretend "the rest of us" might be In case you "experts" haven't noticed, NOBODY GETS IT!!

I can't find this folder, even by search. I have gone into the properties of my user folder (William) and made sure I have all rights, and changed the ownership (security tab, owner tab). All I want to do is be able to backup my data.

From somewhere, somehow, a folder named "24cd9e4542d29590bce925ec30" has been created in my W7x86pro root dir. Trying to look inside, I had to "permanently get access". But then inside it, there are a whole lot of folders named things like 1025, 1028, 1029, etc, ending with 3076, and 3082. What's in those folders, I have no idea, since every time I try to open one, I first get the "You don't currently have permission to access this folder" dialog, and then when I click Continue, I get "You have been denied permission to access this folder".
Also inside the "24cd9e4542d29590bce925ec30" folder, there are files, like "Setup.exe" and "NDP40-KB2473228.msp" and "SetupEngine.dll" and some *.bmp and some other files. I guess that NDP40-KB2473228.msp gives away that this folder has something to do with some .NET framework update, but AFAIK, there's no .NET-anything installed on this computer. I want to remove the "24cd9e4542d29590bce925ec30" folder, but there seems to be no way I can get permission to do that. trying to get ownership or set access rights, all I get is "Access denied" or similar.
1. What those folders and files are doing there?
2. How do I remove them?

When I login I get the following:
"Recycle Bin"
<!> The RecycleBin on C: is corrupted. Do you want to empty Recycle Bin for this drive?
If I say "Yes"
"Folder Access Denied"
<!> You'll need to provide administrator permission to delete this folder.
It show the name of some hieroglyphics w/ "Date created: 4/3/2011..." -"Continue"- -"Skip"- -"Cancel"-
If I continue, it changes -"Continue"- to -"TryAgain"-
I notice that in the note it says "You require permission from <<my computersubfolder>> to make changes to this folder."
But I already have permission: I'm logged in as that person. I change to name to "corrupted" and tried to delete but won't work...

I'm having trouble getting my Documents & Settings folder to copy into my external drive for backup purposes. The external drive already has this folder in place and the proper files and folders within D/S as I have been routinely backing it up for the last few years. However, now when I try to Copy Folder To the external drive, I get the error message that access to the J drive (external drive) is denied. As you can see from the pic below, the D/S folder on my hard drive is apparently locked. I don't recall locking it and how do I unlock it so that I can copy to to the external drive?

My laptop is not letting me copy anything onto USB flash drives. I'm using windows 7. I have already tried system restore and uninstalling the drive in Device Manager and Disabling write protection in the registry but to no avail. I am able to format the pen drive and also access files on it and copy files from it. But I am not able to paste files from my laptop onto the pen drive. It says "Destination folder access denied" and "You need permission to perform this action". I am running an administrator account. Also I am able to do everything normally in the case of a external HDD but again face the problem when trying to paste something to SD cards. I have taken ownership, run as administrator and also tried to drag-drop but to no avail. This not for just 1 particular file/folder. I am not able to copy anything to the USB and at the same time I am able to copy anything to the external HDD.

I have one PC running Vista (home basic), one running XP (professional) and one running Windows 7 (home basic). There is a printer connected to the Vista box, which is shared.
On the XP box I can both see and use the printer on the Vista box (i.e. a "net view \vistabox" shows the printer, and under "printers and faxes" I can install and use it).
On the Windows 7 box, however, I can see the Vista box (i.e. a "net view" shows it in the list of available PCs on the network) but a "net view \vistabox" gives me an "access denied" error.
The Windows 7 machine has a password on it, the Vista and XP machines don't. All machines are on the same workgroup name (which is "WORKGROUP"). On the XP box I don't need a password to access the shared printer on the Vista machine; it just works.
Extensive Googling has failed to render enlightenment, nor has browsing this forum. I'm sure it has something to do with security and passwords, somewhere, somehow, but I have no idea in which direction to look for it, let alone fix it. I have also read some things about workgroups and homegroups not being the same in Windows 7, but I'm not sure if this is correct (and if so, relevant).

copying a file to a Web Folder in Windows 7.I am able to connect to the web folder and see the subfolders. I am able to copy a local folder to the web folder as well. The only I am facing is when I am trying to copy a file. I am getting the error 0x80070057(The Parameter is incorrect). I have checked with fiddler and it does not look like its a server side issue. And I have also tried stopping most of the services as I read on the net that having 'Kaspersky' enabled and running interfered with the I/O for webdav.

I am working in Windows 7 XP Mode, trying to install and run a Microsoft utility called: WT1230: Batch File Converter for PowerPoint for Windows 95. (See WT1230: Batch File Converter for PowerPoint for Windows 95). Yes, the utility is intended for Win95, but I'd like to see if I can get it running in XP Mode. The utility installation instructions ask that I copy 2 files to the "Windows/system" folder. Of course, these instructions were written for Win95, not XP, let alone XP Mode. Still... if I copy the files, the core executable runs fine, but it can't find the 2 files that should be in "Windows/System". So, I gather XP Mode must have its own Windows/System folder.
