Sep 8, 2012When I try to delete a few videos on my desktop it will not allow me by saying that they are use by another program. The other program has been uninstalled a little while back so I am not sure how to fix. I've checked several places and it's not on my computer any longer.

May 27, 2011I have a new machine running Win 7 Home Premium 64, which came preinstalled with Office 2010 Starter. I'm trying to uninstall all Office software, but Office Click-to-Run 2010 won't uninstall.When I try to uninstall it from the Programs and Features screen, I get an error message that reads, "The action could not be completed. Try the action again. If the action continues, contact Microsoft Product Support."I have tried the Microsoft Fix it for Me wizard (How do I uninstall Office 2003, Office 2007 or Office 2010 suites if I cannot uninstall it from Control Panel?) to no avail, and I've tried Revo Uninstaller, which removes Office Click-to-Run from the Add or Remove Programs screen but does not uninstall it cleanly.There are two other Office 2010 entries in the Programs and Features list: Microsoft Office Starter 2010 - English and Microsoft Office 2010. These uninstall without any issue, but Office Click-to-Run 2010 won't budge.

Jun 3, 2012My wife has a two month old Lenovo ideapad with Windows 7. We are now getting alerts that the D partition is near full. Is this system taking multipul backups of the harddrive C and storing them all? What are my best options to have a safe backup, but not overloading the D partition? I do see in; Computer>System>Device Manager>Disk Drives>D Drive General tab that there are two options at the bottom.
option one, (not checked in my case) "Compress this drive to save disk space". Option two, (checked) "Allow files on this drive to have contents indexed in addition to file properties" If this system is saving a snapshot of D over and over, it will only be a matter of time when option one will be overcome. SO, I would think that there has to be a setting that will let partition D delete older backups...right?
Would it be a combination of selecting option one and changing a setting that would enable older backups to be automaticaly removed?

Oct 27, 2011Dell Studio 1747 with I7, 4 core processor, 8GB ram, Win 7 Pro. When I try to back up my user folder, I get the msg-You must have administrator rights to change this folder (CardSpace). I can't find this folder, even by search. I have gone into the properties of my user folder (William) and made sure I have all rights, and changed the ownership (security tab, owner tab). All I want to do is be able to backup my data.

Windows 7 Backup Completed But Some Files Were Skipped
Feb 17, 2012I have Win 7 Home Premium SP1. For the past year and a half, I've been using the Win 7 backup about once a month without any problems. My hard drive is partitioned into drives C and D, and I back up onto an external hard disk, which appears as Drive I when connected. (The external hard disk is partitioned into drives G, H, I, but there is plenty of space on drive I).
In addition, more often, I back up my important data folders (using MS Synctoy) on a USB flash memory which appears as Drive F. Yesterday, I backed up to the flash memory. Then I did the Win 7 backup to my external hard disc, but I forgot to remove the flash memory from the USB port, which I always do. When the Win 7 backup finished, I got an error message from Windows Backup: "Windows Backup did not complete successfully. The backup completed but some files were skipped."
When I looked at "View Skipped Files", it said "Windows Backup skipped F:Music because it cannot be found on drive F:." (There is no "Music folder on drive F). So I took out the USB flash memory and tried Win 7 Backup again (twice). Same result. Then I shut down the PC for the night. This morning I turned it on again. Everything else seemed to be working. So I did Win 7 Backup with the same result.
I looked at "Restore all users' files" in the Backup Window, and there I see that I have only a folder called "Users" backed up from the C Drive, and only a folder called "Music" backed up from the D Drive. I have many other folders in these drives, and even these folders only show a small portion of the files in those folders on my PC. It also shows that there is an empty F:Music folder backed up. Just to remind you - there is no F Drive once I remove my USB flash memory.
Looking at "Manage Windows Backup Space" I see that on Drive I (the backup drive) I use 26.6 GB for Data File Backup, 95 GB for System Image, with 64 GB of free space on the drive. Since my C and D drives have a total of 74 GB used space, and I assume Win 7 Backup compresses files, these numbers look reasonable to me. Are my files backed up or not? Why the silly error message? My external hard disk seems fine, as best as I can tell.

From time to time at any old time of the day (randomly it seems in other words) I'll go in and try to arrange, rename, or get rid of files and I'll get "The action can't be completed because the file is open in Windows Explorer. Close file and try again". Except that the file ISN'T open anywhere.

I get the message: (every time I try and open a folder on my c/drive - Can't access Windows Explorer folder on the taskbar and any other folder or file by double clicking it. I can open them by right clicking, then open)

I can open applications. But, I can not open the folder for them lets say in c:/program files -- the only way to open them is by rightclicking, then open. If I double click, I get the above error message. (same issue with "my documents", "My pictures", etc).
Included with the above problems: I now, can not access User Accounts. When I go into Control Panel, click User Accounts.. I can not manage existing ones, nor can I "Add or remove user accounts". I click the link and nothing happens.
I have someething built into the computer called "Dell DataSafe Backup". Its a recovery partition/part of the HDD that saves all my files for a recovery. However, I can NOT access it. I click the "Dell DataSafe" in my taskbar and nothing happens..

Feb 18, 2012A twist on the creation of user folders on a drive other than C: in Win 7 Ultimate. Does anyone know if one could designate a user folder location such as E:Data instead of using the users name and being a subdirectory of "Users". I am the ONLY one on my computer - and it would seem much easier to look to the top folder in the E drive than clicking thru E:, users, name, documents, project. I fully realize that I can set up shortcuts, but when you are in an application that wants to place a file somewhere else and presents you with an explorer windows it is a pain. The only method I thought of is using redirection with symbolic links.

Nov 4, 2009I have a system Image Backup of my C drive. It is located on a USB portable drive. I want to rename this backup. If I do rename it and later need to use it will I have problems?
That is, I renamed the folder from WindowsImageBackup to WindowsImageBackup_2009_11_03. If I ever needed to use it to restore a file, I'm supposing I can just change it back to WindowsImageBackup and all will be well. But this is a supposition on my part. I would like to find out now if there are problems, rather than later.
I am a little concerned because Windows 7 seems to be picky about the MediaID file. I wonder, for example, if I mount the backup after giving the WindowsImageBackup the new date specific name, I say, I wonder if this is going to affect MediaID. My nightmare is to think I am set up in case of an emergency, only to find that something like this is not in place.

Nov 23, 2010I've just recently realized that copying folders to a backup hard drive resets their "created" date. Should my computer ever crash, all my backup files will state to have just been created on that certain date. Me, being the organize-freak I am, have been looking for a solution so my backed up files can have the same time stamps as on my computer right now. I've done a little searching, and have found that people always recommend Robocopy. Problem is, I can't understand a word of the tutorials. How to run Robocopy to carry out what I want? And also just for the heck of it, is Robocopy the only solution? Is there some sort of back up program on Windows 7 that can do that?

Mar 22, 2012I made a really dumb mistake last night while setting up a VPN. Long story short I deleted my user account. Now, I did not lose any data at all (the account's folder still exists, untouched, in the /Users folder), it is just the user account picture and log in information that are gone. I have no way (that I know of) of re-referencing it so that it appears on my log-in screen again.My issue is that I effectively lost some programs and all configuration files that were exclusively associated with that account. Which is years of config data that I would HATE to have to do again. My questions are as follows (which are two sides of the same coin really).
Is there some way to re-reference this user account so it shows up and loads up like normal on windows login once again? (The system displays it as "User Unknown")f not, is there something that I can do with the /AppData folders of the new (recently created) and old ("deleted") accounts to make my new account be just like the old one?
Copying Folder Over Network With Same Permissions
Jul 29, 2012I just want to share my problem regarding with the folder copying with the same permissions. Here's the scenario I installed domain server in my company and create a users ofcourse and in client pc we make 2 partitions in it(hard drive) C & D on drive D I make a folder Users with the permissions.
- C Drive OS Installed and basic programs
- D Drive (with Users folder)
This is where I want to put the profiling on every users login on a client pc. My problem is:
1. How can I copy the Users folder in every client pc with the same permissions so I don't need to set in one by one on a client pc.
2. If there's a software or simple program that can do such thing transferring a folder to another pc over network with the same permission.
Copying Upgrade Disk
Oct 27, 2009First off, hopefully everyone's not too "Windows 7 student upgrade" questioned out (I've been lurking and reading for a while)... I sort of have one more, which I haven't seen addressed here or elsewhere.
My download and installation of Windows 7 worked just fine, but I neglected to create/burn an ISO boot disk before running the upgrade. I ran a backup and created a system disk DVD in Windows 7, but I've been told that's different than a boot disk and I should make one of those too.
My question is, can I just burn a friends copy of the Windows 7 Upgrade DVD and if so, how? (again, 7 is already installed on my computer and running great...)

I followed some instructions I found online and copied the Profile folder for FF and merged/replaced it with the one in W7.Now the Mozilla Profiles folder is read only, and I get an "Access Denied" message if I try to change it. I also can not "take ownership" of the folder or change any of the security options.

The utility installation instructions ask that I copy 2 files to the "Windows/system" folder. Of course, these instructions were written for Win95, not XP, let alone XP Mode. Still... if I copy the files, the core executable runs fine, but it can't find the 2 files that should be in "Windows/System". So, I gather XP Mode must have its own Windows/System folder.
