I recently setup a Home Server to have Windows 7 automatically backup. The home server has a 1TB HD and I've set full permissions for everyone in my network but the problem is Windows 7 will go so far with backup and then all of a sudden it will stop and say it can't be completed.
Then if I click Details it just comes up and says Access denied. Whats up?
I have Win 7 Home Premium SP1. For the past year and a half, I've been using the Win 7 backup about once a month without any problems. My hard drive is partitioned into drives C and D, and I back up onto an external hard disk, which appears as Drive I when connected. (The external hard disk is partitioned into drives G, H, I, but there is plenty of space on drive I).
In addition, more often, I back up my important data folders (using MS Synctoy) on a USB flash memory which appears as Drive F. Yesterday, I backed up to the flash memory. Then I did the Win 7 backup to my external hard disc, but I forgot to remove the flash memory from the USB port, which I always do. When the Win 7 backup finished, I got an error message from Windows Backup: "Windows Backup did not complete successfully. The backup completed but some files were skipped."
When I looked at "View Skipped Files", it said "Windows Backup skipped F:Music because it cannot be found on drive F:." (There is no "Music folder on drive F). So I took out the USB flash memory and tried Win 7 Backup again (twice). Same result. Then I shut down the PC for the night. This morning I turned it on again. Everything else seemed to be working. So I did Win 7 Backup with the same result.
I looked at "Restore all users' files" in the Backup Window, and there I see that I have only a folder called "Users" backed up from the C Drive, and only a folder called "Music" backed up from the D Drive. I have many other folders in these drives, and even these folders only show a small portion of the files in those folders on my PC. It also shows that there is an empty F:Music folder backed up. Just to remind you - there is no F Drive once I remove my USB flash memory.
Looking at "Manage Windows Backup Space" I see that on Drive I (the backup drive) I use 26.6 GB for Data File Backup, 95 GB for System Image, with 64 GB of free space on the drive. Since my C and D drives have a total of 74 GB used space, and I assume Win 7 Backup compresses files, these numbers look reasonable to me. Are my files backed up or not? Why the silly error message? My external hard disk seems fine, as best as I can tell.
Trying to copy "user' folder to a back-up disk drive but informed: "Action can't be completed because this file in open in the system" ???

On a Laptop with 4G RAM and Dual T7250 CPU install time for Clean install of Rc x-64 build 7100 took just over 15 Mins when booted up from a USB stick .
OK I have to install applications and find one or two drivers etc (you always have to do that anyway) but the "Base" install really didn't take long at all.
Maybe a USB should be an "Optional" install medium.
Was a great trick to run the "BOOTSECT" command from the "Install" DVD to get the bootsector on to the USB disk.
Now I've got a nice fast portable method of installing from a USB stick.
Now to see if it works on a Netbook with no internal DVD drive.
-- It does -- but beware there's no Prompt on the boot so if you re-boot during the setup it will start again from scartch so remove the USB stick after the first boot and insert it again quickly before the setup continues. I.E insert the USB stick again at the boot splash screen.

I bought a version of W7 Home Premium. I was running XP before, put in windows 7, backed up my files on external USB, formatted my drive and proceeded with a fresh install. After installation and first startup, I see the windows 7 load screen, then all I see is a blank screen.
I've tried to run a repair but it can't fix it. I've tried running in Safe Mode but it won't because it says it hasn't completed installation yet. I've unplugged all USB devices except for my KB and mouse. Still just a blank screen. Can anyone help?
I have a number of pre-printed forms with many blank spaces to be filled in. Rather than completing them all by hand, I would like to scan them into some software, like MS Word, then fill them in on the computer and then print them. I have Windows 7 Ultimate and an Epson Photo R200 printer.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI was trying to format my computer, I had installed the OS of Windows 7 Ultimate x32 bit, and decided to take the opportunity to install a new one, but this time of x64 bits, this was my first time formatting my computer but apparently didnt finish good.
1: When first restart the computer to finish installing the OS, it Said That "The intallation of windows could not be completed. To finish installing Windows, restart the installation"
2: I try to do what it say, but when I try to restart the installation with the OS disk in, I get to the same window (not sure if that's what meant by what I just explained).
3: When I turn on my computer says something like: "select the operating system you want to use", and I get the "Windows 7" option twice.
I just found out according to format the computer i had to delete the partition that was the old OS and create a new one, but I cant get to that window, because as explained in section 2 always get the same message from section 1.
3 month old HP Dv6 Laptop with Windows 7 Problem Windows 7 desktop icons freeze after startup has completed. I have gone through all 106 posts about Windows 7 freezing at startup but I have not as yet found one that fits my problem exactly. The following problem is intermittent at switch on, and when it happens the only way out of it is to power down then switch back on again, maybe once or maybe 3 or 4 times before it is O.K. In the past couple of weeks, after switching on Windows 7 it boots up as normal to the desktop, but the first icon you try to open whether it be a desktop Icon which will highlight or a toolbar button at the bottom or even the 'Start' button which will depress the computer will not open these items. View 6 Replies View Relatedi was working on w7 ultimate x64 (i had xp 32 before, but due a hardware upgrade i wanted to try an x64 os) when an automatic upgrade from windows poped up(i was pretty sure i disabled the option before, but.. whatever). The thing is the upgrade never completed ( 2 hours freezed on the final step) and i had to reboot(i know, my mistake).from here, i tryed to boot but i did not sucess. the first issue apeared when i turned on the pc, and the boot recovery windows poped up, to check if there waserrors on the HDD. but wont never ever complete (6 or 7 hours running)i started to search on the web for a solution and i found a bunch of similar cases (a failed update and a failed boot recovery) but no clear solutions.never the less, the moest of the cases pointed at the same spot: "the bootmgr file" and i started to try a few steps posted on forums.first of all, i put the w7 dvd instalation and accesed to the console prompt.i followed these steps to delete and reinstall the bootmgr, or at least, that was what the post told me [CODE]well, i am about of exploding or jumping from a roof... seriously, i have some unfinished works to deliver in the begining of the week and i will not succes if ineed to blow up my D: and reinstall.

How do I find out which program it is so I can close it and move the folder to another location?

I apparently downloaded a virus. Now no programs will work. Windows will boot up fine (although it takes a long time), but I cannot run any programs. Whether I click on a program icon or right click on it and choose "Open," nothing at all happens. I tried running fix_exe.reg and regfix.reg as recommended elsewhere in this forum, but nothing has changed. I tried doing a system restore to restore to factory defaults, and the computer reboots, but it is unchanged. I was able to remove the virus using the Linux-based Trinity Rescue Kit, booted from a CD, but still can't get any programs to run. Task Manager will open, and under "services," more than half of what is listed shows "stopped" under "status." If I right-click any of them and choose "start," I get the error message, "The operation could not be completed, Access is denied"

I saved the image on a network shared folder.I then went to the Advanced Recovery Methods in Windows to restore my image...that I just created. It restarts the computer and goes into recovery mode, I point to where the image is located, I entered the network credentials and it give me an error. The files I'm talking about are files that get altered by appending stuff at the end of the file, e.g. log files or mailbox files, so it's generally possible to split a new version of the file at the exact point where the old version stopped, purely by file size.
Specifically, I want to back up Thunderbird and SeaMonkey mailboxes without having to create additional subfolders within those programs. I understand that if something had changed near the beginning of the file, then the whole file will have to be backed up, unless the backup program is capable of some very clever searching, but mostly the files will change only by having data appended to it.
Which backup software to backup Pictures/Documents/Videos so that when you do a fresh install you don't loose anything.apart from your programs of course, just the documents backed up what do you use?

I just got it back from the warranty repair center, where they replaced the hard drive and graphics fan & heatsink, and reloaded the factory windows version. Before I sent it out for repair, I used Windows Backup to create a backup of all my files on a Toshiba casio 500GB external USB drive (I had over 300 GB of files, so it was easier to use Windows Backup than drag and drop all the files, at least at the time). Now that I have the laptop back, I'm having trouble restoring my files. When I go to Control Panel-> Backup & Restore, a message appears in the restore section, saying "Windows could not find a backup for this computer." I've tried reconnecting the drive as well as restarting my computer, but to no avail. I can see and explore the files in My Computer, so I know the hard drive is properly connected.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI backup 100GB of data with Windows Backup and over the time where I do all my backups there is like only 30GB of data which changed from those 100GB and also new files were added. Now my external drive is full. When I now delete the very early backup, the first one where the 100GB of data was saved, will it delete then ALL those 100 GB, or will it just delete the previous versions of the files which were modified AFTER that time, which are in this case the 30GB I talked about? Because otherwhise I would then have in the end an uncomplete, messed up backup.

With Win XP, I was able to schedule multiple backup jobs, which makes things easier since I have 116 GB of data. I like to backup my documents, email files, etc. every week, but my photos, MP3s, etc. don't change as frequently so once a month is fine for that. Not surprisingly, the media collection takes much longer to backup, which is another reason I try to separate it from my "regular" backup.Unfortunately, Win 7 backup only seems to allow one backup job to be scheduled, which seems awfully limited. Am I missing something? Are there other free backup utilities that would work better, or do I need to shell out some cash?

From time to time at any old time of the day (randomly it seems in other words) I'll go in and try to arrange, rename, or get rid of files and I'll get "The action can't be completed because the file is open in Windows Explorer. Close file and try again". Except that the file ISN'T open anywhere.
