Once upon a time I set up a Windows PW so I could have a separate acct for guests. Then I spent time couch surfing and had my PC in a box. When I started using it again, I found I couldn't remember the PW anymore, and after a week of trying to recall it, was forced to do a Factory Reset. I lost ALL of my files, installed software other than what came with the system, and of course - because the guest acct had no Admin privs, I couldn't make a back-up before the factory reset... Is there any way to revert the process to a time say... Before I instituted the Windows PW? So not just roll it back prior to my Factory Reset, but ALSO to a further time in the past (reset 1/21/12, but need to revert to 10/01/11)..??

I have imaged my neighbours Netbook with Macrium Reflect. Since it has no DVD burner, I want to create a bootable Macrium (Linux) recovery media on a thumb drive. Not sure how to proceed.

Attempting to restore an image to my dad's computer as a test in case of a crash. He is running Win 7 Pro 64bit and I have made the Macrium rescue CD which finds the images and reports a successful operation. However, when I try to start the new disk, it gets to the windows flags screen and goes nowhere for an hour or more.
I have used the exact same procedure with my Win 7 Pro 32bit computer and it all works fine.

HP Compaq Presario CQ57, Windows 7 Home Premium SP-1 64 bit A month ago I bought an HP Compaq Presario CQ57 notebook (laptop), which comes installed with 2 x 1GB RAM modules. It functioned fine. A couple of weeks ago, I upgraded the RAM by replacing one of the 1GB modules with a 4GB one. When I restarted Windows, yes, it did blue screen momentarily, but recovered with another start and then things went well for a week. Then, upon attempting to reboot, it failed. On the Windows Welcome screen, it flickers briefly before it fails and goes to a blue screen.Using the HP Recovery Console, after trying a recovery that didnt work, I tried the option of restoring to factory condition. Then, it still produced blue screens, giving error messages like IRQL less than equal and Page fault in non-page area.
I replaced the new RAM with the original 2 x 1GB RAM and tried a restore to factory condition option again. This time it worked. However, the hard drive partitions are odd.Disc Management As you can see, Disk 0 is divided into System 199 MB, C 75GB, not labled 133.34 GB, Recovery D 19.38, HP TOOLS E 3.97 GB.Ignore the CD ROM below.Isnt System supposed to be on C? And the 133.34 GB unallocated space isnt supposed to be there either.I ran the restore to factory again and it produced the same disk partitioning. I consulted HP customer service, and they sent me a Windows disk and wants me to try restoring from that rather than from the Recovery provided on the hard drive.

I have a win 7 OEM disk for 32/64 bit and have installed the 32 bit to check it out. As I have not activated the 32 bit am I ok to replace the 32 bit with the 64 bit? Prior to activation can I install the 32/64 on other PC's until I decide which one to activate the copy on?

I used to have an external hard drive enclosure, and I stored large video files onto its 1 TB capacity. I built a new machine, sold the enclosure and used the same 1 TB hard drive with the UNbacked up files still therein. Obviously I am new to this otherwise I would not have done this. I realized my mistake when I went to install Windows 7 and it said to back up your files.
I read further and discovered the reason was "They will be deleted". I really don't want to loose these files. Is there any way to install the OS without deleting the files. Can I install another OS like Linux, then partition the hard drive, delete linux then install windows 7 onto a partition? WHAT ARE MY OPTIONS! OTHER THAN BUYING ANOTHER HDD ENCLOSURE!

Partition 3: home partition for his mother
Partition 4: home partition for his sister
Partition 5: home partition for his other sister
Partition 6: shared partition for some photos.

I have a Lenovo B560 with Windows 7 x64. Sequence of events: Played music from a WD external HD with WMP. Music stopped playing and a terrible constant sound is coming out of the speakers (which began a year ago and happens sporadically), no other programs running besides WMP.2. BSOD appeared while the noise kept going, so I held down the power button to turn off the laptop before reading the error message.

I am installing windows on a new computer, and was watching the series of videos newegg has on the matter. I got to the third episode - [URL] and noticed that at about 12:30 into the video, he mentions creating a maximum size partition on the drive before installing windows. What purpose does this serve? Does it merely allocate the full size of the drive strictly to windows, so nothing else can use it?

I back up my files and system image weekly. I move the recorded TV shows (broadcast TV, nothing illegal) before that from my hard drive onto an external drive. Another drive in the same cabinet does the backup. It saves time and I won't want those files after a disc failure anyway. It would be cool to be able to program the computer to move those files (but not subfolders) over at, say 11.05 pm in preparation for the midnight backup. It would be easier to put the recorded TV in a subfolder though I suppose... then no code would have to be written to ignore subfolders, right?

I had a problem with my pc so I did a system restore. Since then my folders of pics etc are all light grey and are now ''share with nobody''. I have admin rights and I have changed the ''swn'' to ''share with specific people'' and named myself and admin but the padlock is still there. It always defaults back to ''swn''.I am logged in as admin, I have taken ownership, I have used a tweak to give me extended admin rights, but still it defaults back to the padlocked icon and no sharing.

I read that system restore hurts the performance of your SSD (as well as takes up valuable space), however I still would like the feature as I am constantly tweaking and don't want to lose everything.I have a 64 gig boot drive ssd and a 1 tb HDD. Can I disable my system restore on the SSD and create a system restore on my HDD where space is a non issue?

I can't seem to change my wallpaper, either by going to Personalization nor Right clicking on my wallpaper picture. It happened after I performed a System Restore.
I have tried googling it for hours almost, and tried different troubleshooting techniques, with out luck of course!
* Regedit - Made a new DWORD (Or something) With NoChangingWallpaper to 0 value
* "Ease Of Acess" tab in control panel. (There were some other mroe advanced options that had me cooncerned about mucking up, so I cautiously steered away )

I just installed an Intel 330 120G SSD in my netbook. Macrium Reflect worked brilliantly to clone and resize the partiions to fit from a larger 250G hard drive to the new 120G SSD.After swapping in the new SSD, I wanted to make an image of the completed install but Reflect balked for the C: drive with an "MFT error" and a suggestion to run ChkDsk.I did as instructed and ChkDsk returned a bunch of errors but I suspect they are not really errors but rather unexpected results from an SSD. There were about ten of these...CHKDSK is verifying files (stage 1 of 3)... 0 percent complete. (0 of 151808 file records processed)Attribute record (128, "") from file record segment 1536 is corrupt.

I've wanted to clone a drive. I have just installed a WD20EARX (J:/), but after only a couple of seconds, I get the following Error message: Failed to prepare operations. Error code: 10 'File system error is found' with extended code: 458,774 'Block bitmap corrupted'" module="10" time="1318002352".I've checked out the FAQs and that's not helped.I have also tried using Macrium, but get the message: Clone failed - - VerifyFileSystem failed.I have checked through Device Manager and all appears to be OK in there. Ithe new drive is showing up in there OK, but when I check up in Start > Computer, it's not showing up in there.Anyone any idea what it all means and simple step-by-step instruction of how to get around it. I am using Windows 7 and the new drive, 2TB, is formatted to NTFS

my son set up a backup strategy. He has a Seagate GoFlex 2TB network drive that he planned to do backup with. It comes with software to backup files and folders, but not the system image. He has Windows 7 home which apparently can't do backup to a network drive. I see Macrium is recommended here. Can the free version backup and recover a system image to a network drive?

previously I used Macrium Reflect to do an image of my HP laptop's hard disk, and yesterday, i tried to recover using the image, everything was successful, however, I cannot access the recovery partition anymore. Pressing F11 while booting does not boot into Recovery Manager anymore like it previously did, instead it went straight into booting windows... and i tried to access the folders inside the recovery partition, it says that the files are corrupted and unreadable.

At the moment I have two Sony Vaio laptops. My old one has an 80 GB hard drive partitioned as a C and D drive and has Windows XP. My new one has a 320 GB hard drive in one partition C running Windows 7 64 bit. I have several backups on a Freecom 320 GB external hard drive created with Macrium Reflect free edition.
The latest back-up I have on the Freecom is the complete contents of my new computer ammounting to about 72 GB.
Would it be possible for me to copy what is on the Freecom to my old computer in order to create a clone of my new computer? I basically want to have this as a backup in case the new laptop croaks. If this is possible would I have to prepare the old drive in any way such as wiping it clean or re-partitioning it or would the stuff on the Freecom do that as it copied?
