View 0 RepliesI have just changed from XP Pro to Windows 7, and after 'Fighting' the computer to install my Software and Hardware, (Good job I'm not a tecno-novice)I have most of it installed, however the thing I cannot find is an easy way to do searches.I run 4 hard drives and often plug in different USB drives. ON XP there is no problem in searching all drives and folders or searching for documents, video's etc, but this seems to be missing in Windows 7, or have I missed it somewhere.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI can't locate the executable for paint. I typed paint in search while in C: (system drive) with no success. Instead, it could find hundreds of files matching odd criteria, like if "paint" appeared in the name of the containing folder or in the file description, which is too advanced for a basic search.
And guess what -- the file with the actual name wasn't found. I checked in Organize > Folder and search options > Search > When searching non-indexed locations > Include system directories but in vain. It happened with files created by me as well. So, 2 questions arise, as simple as they can be:
1. How can I check the options to search for a file regular/hidden/system in regular/hidden/system directories?
2. Options for input words location: name/content (not interested in others), regardless of indexations (I don't want to change location indexations for these options to work).
Windows 7 SP1 NTFS..I'm trying to create an image as I did with Norton's Ghost in XP and later when I used Norton's Save & Restore in Vista where the entire contents on my C: drive was backed up.In Windows7 Backup & Restore it's a little ambiguous where it saves in steps. I've viewed all options which are: I selected " Create an Image" on the left side of the first dialog box. This gives me these selections which are pre-selected and can not be changed: I don't want to do incremental backups where data is added automatically later. All I want is a one time only backup which creates an image of my entire C: with... Program Files, Registry, System Files, Boot sector, Partition table, etc..

View 7 Replies View RelatedToday I dual booted Windows 7 and Windows 8. Everything was fine, until I decided I wanted to point my music collection in Win8 to my Win7 music folder (turns out you can't do this right now anyway in the music app). I wanted to make sure that win8 didn't screw with any files so I changed the whole drive permissions in Win8 to have read access, but not write access of my Win7 drive. I did the vice versa for Win7.When I restarted my system I got a "windows created a temporary paging file..." error message and figured out its because I screwed with my file permissions. To fix it I just need to change the permissions back, however now they are all greyed out (even in the (hidden) Administrator account) and I can't figure out how to change the permissions back.

Usually it was more around 1 second so I guess this is slightly alarming. I would like to know if there is anything that can be done about that. [code]
View 1 Replies View RelatedI was trying to disable the 'Network Access: Do not allow storage of passwords and credentials for network authentication' since it was enabled which meant I couldn't save passwords. When I right clicked it and opened properties, the options of enabled and disabled were grayed out. Also, there is a padlock on the icon of the Security Settings tab and so does its subtabs. I am on an administrator account but it still doesn't allow me to change the settings.

Recently I opened the folder and the look has changed. On the general tab I no longer see "home page", "temporary internet files", etc. I only see, browsing history and appearance options. I wanted to change my home change in the address box, but it doesn't appear. How can I change it back to the way it use to look? I've scanned my laptop for potential viruses using AVG-anti-virus and Malwarebytes anti-malware....both came up clean.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI had a problem with my pc so I did a system restore. Since then my folders of pics etc are all light grey and are now ''share with nobody''. I have admin rights and I have changed the ''swn'' to ''share with specific people'' and named myself and admin but the padlock is still there. It always defaults back to ''swn''.I am logged in as admin, I have taken ownership, I have used a tweak to give me extended admin rights, but still it defaults back to the padlocked icon and no sharing.

View 0 Replies View RelatedOutlook 2007 Task search versus Windows7 computer wide search.
I enter the same keyword (one of the words contained within the title of a completed task) in the Outlook Task search box as I do the Windows 7 orb 'search programs and files.' The Windows 7 search returns the correct search result (along with a lot other results having the same keyword) practically immediately whereas Outlook is still searching...and searching.
If I have index options set to include the C: drive and Outlook, what's going on with Outlook?
some specifics and pinpoint the differences (or maybe a good website) that would pinpoint the differences between the Windows 7 search and the outlook 2007 search? I know the outlook search searches through email but are there other difference I am overlooking between the two?

View 11 Replies View RelatedI began having an issue with my laptops ATI Radeon graphics driver not working properly. It is fixed now, but the other issues I was having at the same time was not being able to view indexed files through the "search programs and files" and "windows explorer search" box. The screen goes blank or does not produce any results. Also, one of my downloaded software disk programs will not open--error. This particular program, Logos Bible software, index its files quite often. Even when I am not using the program. I also cannot change my desktop background to any picture except solid colors. I think my laptop has a corrupted file somewhere, or it is infected with malware.

View 9 Replies View Related"windows cannot find 'search:query=XXX'" error I have been experiencing lately.
The problem is similar to the one I described previously (here: Windows could not start the Windows Search service on Local Computer)
...namely, I am running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit, and have experienced the same error message ( windows cannot find 'search:query=XXX', where XXX is my search query) when attempting to initiate a search via the Windows start menu search box. Unfortunately, my previously proposed solution (of removing a network search location from Windows Search Index list) does not resolve it.....and so finally I resorted to using Samhrutha's proposed solution of modifying the registry to reset Windows Search back to default (which DID work...but ended up removing all the search index customizations I had made).
However, when I then modify the search indexing options to include indexing of my C: drive, I get the "windows cannot find 'search:query=XXX'" error message.
If I then uncheck the C: drive box in the search in the search indexing options, the error message does not occur....so I then went thru a tedious process of trying to identify which folders on my C drive were causing the issue, and from what I am able to tell, the "windows cannot find 'search:query=XXX'" error message seems to always occur when the indexing options include at least one folder WHICH IS OWNED by TRUSTED INSTALLER (e.g., program files folder, program files (x86), c:, etc.). This wasn't a problem previously, so my guess is that MS Update recently (e.g., w/in the last few months) changed some security setting which now prevents Windows Search from being able to index/access folders owned by TRUSTED INSTALLER, resulting in the "windows cannot find 'search:query=XXX'" error message.
I wouldn't go so far to say, I'm totally computer illiterate, but not far from it.. If there's anyone out there, who's up for a challenge I'm running windows 7. I am the administrator. Someone I don't trust at all, used my PC a while back. After he (did whatever he did) I noticed I couldn't access several files. I get a "access denied" or you don't have permission to view this file, owner info etc.. I can see a lot of the files, but their either empty now or I can't view them. I have used restore many times in the past, but now I get a message " no restore points".. I don't know what he did, or if he did anything.. It could be one of my kids changed properties by mistake, before I wised up and created a basic user acct w/ limited access for them.. I almost forgot. When I go into file properties there is a red x by my user name (administrator) Not in every property, but several.. Sometimes there is a red x by other user names, as well, but mostly mine.

View 7 Replies View RelatedOK, so a couple of days ago, my HP desktop crashed and then went through the whole System Recovery loop(I couldn't login to Safe mode, wouldn't let me past the System Recovery Screen). Well I backed up the entire C drive using Backup your files in the menu. Then it shows you all the file types it will back up; i.e photos, videos, e-mails and bookmarks. So I did that to an external hard drive and it comes out to 143GB.Now comes my problem. I've been able to copy everything from the external hard drive using RecoveryMgr.exe which opens the WIM files and saves them to my C: hard drive under System Recovery Files. However it does not seem to work when it comes to putting in my old Thunderbird e-mails, contacts and such or in Firefox to restore my bookmarks, saved passwords.
