Windows 7 Search Options Missing?
Oct 18, 2012
I have just changed from XP Pro to Windows 7, and after 'Fighting' the computer to install my Software and Hardware, (Good job I'm not a tecno-novice)I have most of it installed, however the thing I cannot find is an easy way to do searches.I run 4 hard drives and often plug in different USB drives. ON XP there is no problem in searching all drives and folders or searching for documents, video's etc, but this seems to be missing in Windows 7, or have I missed it somewhere.

I can't locate the executable for paint. I typed paint in search while in C: (system drive) with no success. Instead, it could find hundreds of files matching odd criteria, like if "paint" appeared in the name of the containing folder or in the file description, which is too advanced for a basic search.
And guess what -- the file with the actual name wasn't found. I checked in Organize > Folder and search options > Search > When searching non-indexed locations > Include system directories but in vain. It happened with files created by me as well. So, 2 questions arise, as simple as they can be:
1. How can I check the options to search for a file regular/hidden/system in regular/hidden/system directories?
2. Options for input words location: name/content (not interested in others), regardless of indexations (I don't want to change location indexations for these options to work).

Running Win7 and certain programs do not display options. For example... if I run msconfig.... it pops up but there's nothing there... just a blank GUI... If I try to install a program... the install wizard pops up... but it's just a blank GUI... same with Task Manager. I can run CMD though. I tried to run a Outlook export and the export wizard is also just a blank GUI. And then in Chrome when I try to browse websites it's like 90% of the CSS doesn't work. I think I might have a virus but Kaspersky couldn't find any issues... I also tried some online scanners. I want to install some more serious software but I can't get through the wizards because the options don't exist.

I have an Acer Aspire 5532 laptop running Windows 7. As of yesterday, my touchpad started acting up. The tap option that allows you to click by tapping the pad rather than clicking the button keeps toggling on and off by itself. It also lost the scroll function. The sensitivity is also out of whack.I went to the control panel to try to readjust the settings and for some reason they are missing. The Control Panel does not have any options for the touchpad. It doesn't even acknowledge that it exists. I have tried downloading drivers that were supposedly going to fix the problem, but nothing has changed. How can I gain access to the touchpad options and get it back to the way it was?

After doing a clean install but saving files in 'Windows.old' Wingdings 2 & Wingdings 3 fonts have disappeared. They aren't in the the fonts folder and I need them. PC started acting inappropriately during searches. Press Window Key, press W key to get Wordpad and it would show things like Calculator, VLC Player or Irfanview. Or press Window Key, press I for Internet Explorer and it shows Notepad, Paint or Word.

Today, I noticed my search bar was missing from both the start menu and folders. I had just reinstalled Windows 7 yesterday, and also installed MS Office 2007 then as well.Btw, I have already tried the "Turn Windows features on and off" thing, and Search is already checked off, but there is still no search.I've also checked through gpedit, and made sure disabling search was disabled, but that didn't work either

I have recently reinstalled (via recovery) my 64-bit Win 7 Home premium . Every thing else is fine, except for office 2007. The program was installed successfully but office files didn't show their respective icons. For the first time for every office file (e.g Word or Excel document) I have to chose the program to run the file. Now though on clicking any office file they opened in the respective office program but still their icons are like office is not installed.

In IE8, typing in the search bar generated a list of previous search queries starting with the same characters. In IE9, I don't get the same. According to the Privacy Statement, Quote: AutoComplete collects and stores in the registry on your computer the data you type in ...the Address bar. This is a very useful feature of IE8, making it possible to re-use complicated search strings like g site:gloucestershire.gov.uk - all I had to do was type g and this string would appear as the first result. Substitute keywords for the g, select a provider and watch the results stream in.how do I make autocomplete in the Address Bar show previously-entered search strings as well as URLs and page titles?

I recently purchased a lexmark printer and installed the driver and software. After installation I tried to import some pictures off of my sd card using the card reader on my laptop. previous to the lexmark software install I had several options for importing the picture, I usually chose "import using windows". Now that option is gone along with all other options (that I rarely used) and it has been replaced with the lexmark productivity center. I looked at my autoplay options and all the old options are still there for importing videos, but pictures have only productivity studio and general options. So I uninstalled the software and rebooted, the productivity option is gone, but the old ones have not returned.Lastly I tried to do a system restore, but it hangs up on initializing for hours and never completes.Any ideas on how to get my old autoplay options back? I assume it is a registry setting.

Outlook 2007 Task search versus Windows7 computer wide search.
I enter the same keyword (one of the words contained within the title of a completed task) in the Outlook Task search box as I do the Windows 7 orb 'search programs and files.' The Windows 7 search returns the correct search result (along with a lot other results having the same keyword) practically immediately whereas Outlook is still searching...and searching.
If I have index options set to include the C: drive and Outlook, what's going on with Outlook?

I began having an issue with my laptops ATI Radeon graphics driver not working properly. It is fixed now, but the other issues I was having at the same time was not being able to view indexed files through the "search programs and files" and "windows explorer search" box. The screen goes blank or does not produce any results. Also, one of my downloaded software disk programs will not open--error. This particular program, Logos Bible software, index its files quite often. Even when I am not using the program. I also cannot change my desktop background to any picture except solid colors. I think my laptop has a corrupted file somewhere, or it is infected with malware.

"windows cannot find 'search:query=XXX'" error I have been experiencing lately.
The problem is similar to the one I described previously (here: Windows could not start the Windows Search service on Local Computer)
...namely, I am running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit, and have experienced the same error message ( windows cannot find 'search:query=XXX', where XXX is my search query) when attempting to initiate a search via the Windows start menu search box. Unfortunately, my previously proposed solution (of removing a network search location from Windows Search Index list) does not resolve it.....and so finally I resorted to using Samhrutha's proposed solution of modifying the registry to reset Windows Search back to default (which DID work...but ended up removing all the search index customizations I had made).
However, when I then modify the search indexing options to include indexing of my C: drive, I get the "windows cannot find 'search:query=XXX'" error message.
If I then uncheck the C: drive box in the search in the search indexing options, the error message does not occur....so I then went thru a tedious process of trying to identify which folders on my C drive were causing the issue, and from what I am able to tell, the "windows cannot find 'search:query=XXX'" error message seems to always occur when the indexing options include at least one folder WHICH IS OWNED by TRUSTED INSTALLER (e.g., program files folder, program files (x86), c:, etc.). This wasn't a problem previously, so my guess is that MS Update recently (e.g., w/in the last few months) changed some security setting which now prevents Windows Search from being able to index/access folders owned by TRUSTED INSTALLER, resulting in the "windows cannot find 'search:query=XXX'" error message.

Windows 7 SP1 NTFS..I'm trying to create an image as I did with Norton's Ghost in XP and later when I used Norton's Save & Restore in Vista where the entire contents on my C: drive was backed up.In Windows7 Backup & Restore it's a little ambiguous where it saves in steps. I've viewed all options which are: I selected " Create an Image" on the left side of the first dialog box. This gives me these selections which are pre-selected and can not be changed: I don't want to do incremental backups where data is added automatically later. All I want is a one time only backup which creates an image of my entire C: with... Program Files, Registry, System Files, Boot sector, Partition table, etc..
