some specifics and pinpoint the differences (or maybe a good website) that would pinpoint the differences between the Windows 7 search and the outlook 2007 search? I know the outlook search searches through email but are there other difference I am overlooking between the two?

Outlook 2007 Task search versus Windows7 computer wide search.
I enter the same keyword (one of the words contained within the title of a completed task) in the Outlook Task search box as I do the Windows 7 orb 'search programs and files.' The Windows 7 search returns the correct search result (along with a lot other results having the same keyword) practically immediately whereas Outlook is still searching...and searching.
If I have index options set to include the C: drive and Outlook, what's going on with Outlook?

I began having an issue with my laptops ATI Radeon graphics driver not working properly. It is fixed now, but the other issues I was having at the same time was not being able to view indexed files through the "search programs and files" and "windows explorer search" box. The screen goes blank or does not produce any results. Also, one of my downloaded software disk programs will not open--error. This particular program, Logos Bible software, index its files quite often. Even when I am not using the program. I also cannot change my desktop background to any picture except solid colors. I think my laptop has a corrupted file somewhere, or it is infected with malware.

"windows cannot find 'search:query=XXX'" error I have been experiencing lately.
The problem is similar to the one I described previously (here: Windows could not start the Windows Search service on Local Computer)
...namely, I am running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit, and have experienced the same error message ( windows cannot find 'search:query=XXX', where XXX is my search query) when attempting to initiate a search via the Windows start menu search box. Unfortunately, my previously proposed solution (of removing a network search location from Windows Search Index list) does not resolve it.....and so finally I resorted to using Samhrutha's proposed solution of modifying the registry to reset Windows Search back to default (which DID work...but ended up removing all the search index customizations I had made).
However, when I then modify the search indexing options to include indexing of my C: drive, I get the "windows cannot find 'search:query=XXX'" error message.
If I then uncheck the C: drive box in the search in the search indexing options, the error message does not occur....so I then went thru a tedious process of trying to identify which folders on my C drive were causing the issue, and from what I am able to tell, the "windows cannot find 'search:query=XXX'" error message seems to always occur when the indexing options include at least one folder WHICH IS OWNED by TRUSTED INSTALLER (e.g., program files folder, program files (x86), c:, etc.). This wasn't a problem previously, so my guess is that MS Update recently (e.g., w/in the last few months) changed some security setting which now prevents Windows Search from being able to index/access folders owned by TRUSTED INSTALLER, resulting in the "windows cannot find 'search:query=XXX'" error message.

Windows 7 - Service pack 1 Problem started 3 days ago. Updates are set to automatically download and install new ones. I keep getting Windows Update error 80073712 and while looking at the installed updates section in Control panel there are "No updates installed on this computer"
I did some reading and I tried some solutions with no luck: 1) Run System Update Readiness tool from Microsoft. 2) Run the System File Checker which could not run giving me a "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation" message
I also looked in my Windows/logs/CBS/CBS file and I found several errors with mainly " Failed to get CSI store"

Is it possible to do a full search for a document through my entire computer system including both external drives? If so where do I start from. I tried by going to Computer from the Start menu then selecting the C: drive but was wondering if that done a full search of the other drives.

So, I've been trouble free on Windows 7 for a long time. Today, while searching for a document containing the word "audit" I realized that my Windows 7 search is not returning correct results.I open up the Documents library link, and I see all of my files. I see files with the name audit in them. I go to the top and put audit into the search field and it comes back with 2 files...and misses handfuls of other files that contain the word. I then search for .xlsx (as this is a spreadsheet) and I cannot find that either. I can find other .xlsx files, but not a good handful of them.I've cleared the index and rebuilt it, but that didn't resolve the issue. My results are the same as they always were.

Today a message came up saying that windows could not check automatically for updates and after clicking it to search manually I got the thread title as an error(error 8008005). (might be related) Some days ago windows tried to install some updates but failed several times. Every time I restarted the PC it said the updates failed to install and then I had to re-download them. I didn't give much attention though, so I'm not sure if they did install after all. So I can't use windows update to search for new updates at the moment.

My Dell 1100 notebook has Windows 7 Starter installed. I know that in this system the search function works in the form of a search box which appears when clicking the start icon. However, the box has never appeared. I have been suggested by some acquaintances that the search box is not pre-installed in Windows 7 Starter. But, as a matter of fact, I have seen that it is indeed as you can gather from visiting the Microsoft page.

Can't see how to sort the results of a "Windows Search" - the search you launch from the Start button, not the search you do in Windows Explorer. I've tried menus, and right clicking everywhere.

I am having an issue with Windows Search Service. Almost every time I boot (in the morning), the Search service is disabled. Either I have to repair the function, or go into Services and restart it. Each time I do, I set the Windows Search service to start automatically. Sometimes it does, and sometimes not. This has been going on for several months. It got so bad; I installed another search program that worked just fine. But in the end, I actually reformatted my HD and reinstalled all apps and restored Documents. For a couple of weeks, everything was fine. Now it has started again.
I have tried every fix that seemed reasonable and that I found online. My virus software (AVG) finds nothing. I checked all the Windows components and they are correct. No repair needed.
Here is my SysInfo data:

OS Version: Microsoft Windows 7 Professional, Service Pack 1, 64 bit
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2720QM CPU @ 2.20GHz, Intel64 Family 6 Model 42 Stepping 7

The initial Win7 install to now (about 9 mo), search worked fine and I love it, but I may have done something that broke it. Searches appear to only find stuff on C and then only system related stuff. None of my files/folders and nothing on any of my 3 drives. For example, it finds my Desktop folder but no contents. I went into the Indexing tool and enabled all drives and did a re-index with no improvement. I can't find any settings that control where it searches.

I am puzzled by how to search for special characters in W7. I have some files that start with the Greek letter t I don't seem to find a way to make WS recognize characters like these for searches. When I type get no results at all. I have already tried with the advanced query filename:without getting any results. When I use Total Commander for searching for et all the results I am looking for, and I know that all these files are included in the Windows Search Index because they can be found if using some other parts of the file name, like for example searching for torrent it finds files with the name torrent.
