I have an HP Compaq nx7400 laptop running Vista Business. I have run the Windows 7 Upgrade advisor. My system passes all tests except that I have to uninstall the HP ProtectTools Security Manager 2.00E4 security programme. When I try I get an error message: Error (-5004: 0x8007007e) I have already successfully uninstalled HP Credential Manager for ProtectTools.
View 4 RepliesMy flat mate set up a security thing called Drive Encryption for HP ProtectTools. What this does is, upon start up, before it lets you load windows, you need to enter a password and pin. Clearly, it is anoying, so he handed it to me to get rid of it. It will not uninstall, as it says it is still active, and must be deactivated. I went into services - found it - disabled it. I went into some .msc thing i saw on the HP forums, disabled it. I went into the BIOS - Disabled it. I have disabled every aspect of it, however, it will still not uninstall, and continues to ask for a password and pin prior to windows starting.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI used to have an external hard drive enclosure, and I stored large video files onto its 1 TB capacity. I built a new machine, sold the enclosure and used the same 1 TB hard drive with the UNbacked up files still therein. Obviously I am new to this otherwise I would not have done this. I realized my mistake when I went to install Windows 7 and it said to back up your files.
I read further and discovered the reason was "They will be deleted". I really don't want to loose these files. Is there any way to install the OS without deleting the files. Can I install another OS like Linux, then partition the hard drive, delete linux then install windows 7 onto a partition? WHAT ARE MY OPTIONS! OTHER THAN BUYING ANOTHER HDD ENCLOSURE!
Best Buy lost my copy of MS Office 2003 professional Edition 2 years ago. They gave me MS Office Professional 2007 Upgrade and installed it for on my computer. My computer's hard drive has failed and I purchased a new one yesterday. I need to know how to install my MS Office Prof 2007 Upgrade without a previous version installed on the new PC. Its been doing that on and off for months. My other protection expired some months ago, so I got the update last week which was $89. But the 1st thing it said was to "Uninstall the previous security system". So i let it run, and it was "uninstalling" for 3 whole days and then it just stopped, So i tried to manually uninstall the other program, but again it would not. I am not sure what to do now.

It worked fine but it has been about 9 months since I last used it. I have made sure I have the latest drivers downloaded from vodaphone and when I try the dongle in my sons laptop it installs and works fine. I thought I would uninstall the driver from device manager but when I try to do this it just sits there for hours. I have to end up closing device manager down using task manager. I am running Windows 7 on an HP G62 Notebook.

I was wondering if anyone knows, if I installed Trend Micros internet security 2009 and got the 2010 upgrade, would it all be fixed up or would it be better to buy the non upgrade 2010 one? Just that the upgrade can be AU$40 cheaper than the non upgrade. Anyone know if the upgrade can do a clean install like win 7 upgrade can??
I have a win 7 OEM disk for 32/64 bit and have installed the 32 bit to check it out. As I have not activated the 32 bit am I ok to replace the 32 bit with the 64 bit? Prior to activation can I install the 32/64 on other PC's until I decide which one to activate the copy on?

View 5 Replies View RelatedOnce upon a time I set up a Windows PW so I could have a separate acct for guests. Then I spent time couch surfing and had my PC in a box. When I started using it again, I found I couldn't remember the PW anymore, and after a week of trying to recall it, was forced to do a Factory Reset. I lost ALL of my files, installed software other than what came with the system, and of course - because the guest acct had no Admin privs, I couldn't make a back-up before the factory reset... Is there any way to revert the process to a time say... Before I instituted the Windows PW? So not just roll it back prior to my Factory Reset, but ALSO to a further time in the past (reset 1/21/12, but need to revert to 10/01/11)..??

Music stopped playing and a terrible constant sound is coming out of the speakers (which began a year ago and happens sporadically), no other programs running besides WMP.2. BSOD appeared while the noise kept going, so I held down the power button to turn off the laptop before reading the error message.

I got to the third episode - [URL] and noticed that at about 12:30 into the video, he mentions creating a maximum size partition on the drive before installing windows. What purpose does this serve? Does it merely allocate the full size of the drive strictly to windows, so nothing else can use it?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI back up my files and system image weekly. I move the recorded TV shows (broadcast TV, nothing illegal) before that from my hard drive onto an external drive. Another drive in the same cabinet does the backup. It saves time and I won't want those files after a disc failure anyway.It would be cool to be able to program the computer to move those files (but not subfolders) over at, say 11.05 pm in preparation for the midnight backup. It would be easier to put the recorded TV in a subfolder though I suppose... then no code would have to be written to ignore subfolders, right?

Open a Command Prompt with Administrative Privileges:
Click All programs then click Accessories, then right click on Command Prompt and Run as Administrator.
Click on Continue message on the dialogue box with "Windows Need your permission to continue"
Change directory to the root of C Drive by typing CD from the "C:>" prompt.
At the CMD prompt type attrib -r WAUUPGRD
Type RD /S /Q WAUUPGRD
Warning: Make sure you type it in exactly as shown above.The RD command with the /S option will delete all directories and subdirectories contained within the directory specified. The / Q command turns off the prompt asking if you are sure you want to do this. Once you run this command, you can not undo it. I recently purchased a lenovo laptop for home purpose around 1.5 months back. The laptop was having already microsoft security essentials (MSE) and mcafee antivirus plus software. Unfortunately, yesterday i was facing blue screen on death type of error (BSOD) error. On one forum, I found that it may be due to the mcafee antivirus software. So, I uninstalled the software as per suggestion.Why MSE was not able to detect this bsod error? Moreover, why mcafee, which itself is a anti-virus software, was causing this issue?

When I start windows 7 home premium 64, just before the Starting Windows screen comes on some text flashes and I can't read it. What is that and how can I see what it says, I tried some of the F1, F2 buttons but not all. I might have tried F1 but I could have hit F2 instead so I could be wrong F8 was not a solution.

I recently bought a notebook PC, and was quite annoyed to find that Intel has magically removed the ability to change the Centrino N 130 wireless adapter's MAC address.Before the nutters get in here with accusations of "illegal" activity, I feel obligated to point out that there is nothing "illegal" about changing the MAC address on my own property. Briefly, I want to pose my notebook as a hypothetical attacker, trying to bump one of my other wireless devices off the router by assuming its MAC address. I don't really know what would happen if I did this, because, like I said, Intel artificially crippled the Centrino N 130 through its Windows 7 drivers. Rather paternalistic of them.Another benefit of the proposed experiment: showing the futility of MAC filtering in keeping out the "bad guys." I have been convinced of this for some time, but been simultaneously unable to demonstrate it to my own satisfaction. There is no substitute for actually trying something, rather than just reading about it.
I am also a little annoyed at the Centrino N's (lack of) performance. I have yet to have it connect at greater than 72 Mbit/s, even while sitting less than 10 feet from the router with a clear line of sight.FWIW, my router is a NetGear WNR3500v2. N wireless is enabled. As far as I know, this router is capable of supporting a full 300 Mbit or so 802.11n wireless connection, as long as the wireless NIC on the other end is doing its part (which mine doesn't).With all that in mind, can someone suggest an N-capable wireless NIC that is not purposely crippled by its manufacturer? I would prefer an internal mini-PCIe card, but Intel seem to be the only ones making those. Even a G-capable or USB device would probably serve the purpose, if that's all that's available.
I am installing more RAM in my system, and want to monitor the page file for improvement/reduction in size and use. Other than performance monitor, can I see the page file in either task manager or resource monitor?
