After Windows Update Got BSOD - All Programs And Settings Lost
Nov 20, 2012
I did an update and got a BSOD. Message said "Check disc"' After completion, all my programs and settings are lost. I have done Acronis backups, but they are gone. I tried to do a restore, but only date it gives is today's. Can I use the Windows 7 disc to do a repair or will I have to do a complete re-install? Also, after screen came back, I kept getting a "Windows Validation Failed" even though I clicked Validate online and it said "Validation complete".

I have a few portable programs on my computer. How do I update them without losing any settings etc. that I have changed? Do I move ".ini files" and/or ".cfg files" and/or "whatever" out of the old version of the program and into the new?

Suddenly on Friday 13th July (is this merely a coincidence) my user profile - and I am the only user on this laptop vanished. Fortunately I had backed up 99% of my files BUT I have lost all my E-mail history and all my Firefox Bookmarks. I have rebuilt from what I have but am suffering still from vital lost information. Is there any where I can get it back without I hasten to add losing the new version I have built and worked with since 15th July!

I have a user that has a problem with the printer settings being reset every time she logs in to one PC. She has a Win7 Roaming profile. Both PCs are running Win7. It works fine on her PC, but when she roams to the front desk the label printer always has the wrong paper type. We can change the paper type and it works fine the rest of that session, but the next time she logs into this PC it is the wrong paper type again. The label printers are identical and installed locally at each PC.

I recently did a fresh install on my gf's computer as it was suddenly unable to establish an online connection. The error showed in the connection status as the small yellow warning icon at the top left of the connection status icon, not the big red X that appears when the machine isn't connected at all.
Here are the specs:
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate x64
Mobo: Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R Rev.1
CPU: Intel i7 950
RAM: 12GB Corsair Dominator GT 2000mhz
The system is also not overclocked.
After trying many things (reinstalling network drivers, flushing DNS, trying a different ethernet cable, restoring all network settings to default) I gave up and did a fresh installation.
After installation, I installed all the usual official drivers, then performed a Windows update, but only the important updates. The connection was back! I then decided to install some optional stability updates, and after reboot, the network problem was back.
I did a system restore to before I installed the optional updates, but the problem persists. I have no idea which optional update is causing this, or which one to remove first to avoid creating more errors.

Ever since I've updated the Intellipoint software to 8.01, I've fallen prone to this random reset to factory defaults from my current custom button settings on my Trackball Optical. The funny part is that the functions will return to default but when you open the settings control panel, they still show the custom settings as shown in the picture below. My exact custom settings:

I seem to have lost admin rights/privileges on my account, even though it says I am an admin. I can't use windows update because of the following message. UAC is off. I created another account and swapped admin privileges to that, and everything was ok, but as soon as I swap the privileges back to my original account, i get various 'this action requires admin rights' etc. I don't want to keep logging into another admin account just so I can use windows update.

So my son was in the middle of one of his blood bowl league games this evening and a popup asked him if he wanted to install a Windows 7 update. He's only 12 and inexperienced enough that he didn't just tell the system to wait a few hours until he could finish his game, so he told it to go ahead and instal. The result was his near-instant loss of internet (as well as his game, as he was timed out and his opponent got the win).
Even more serious, after the update was finished and his computer was restarted, he still cannot get an internet connection. I've tried rebooting, complete shutdown and then reboot, and asking the computer's internet tools to diagnose/fix the problem, all to no avail.
I read about running a system restore (restoring to an earlier version of windows), but when I tried I learned that that aspect of his system had been shut off.
I know there must be SOME way to fix this problem, but I can't think of what it might be. Even if the problem is due to the new Windows version, he has no way to download a fix for it because he has no internet connection.

I have a dedicated media center that has a old dell monitor (to check settings) and a 42" panasonic HD 1080 television hooked via hdmi. I'm using a combination WMC and Boxee. Problem is everytime I shut down (or just sleep) the external monitor settings >appearnace and personalization>Display>Screen Resolution> mulitple displays goes back to "show desktop only on 2" where I want it to be "duplicate these displays". so I change back and click "keep settings" and it never keeps.

I have a Dell XPS 15 (L502X) laptop withIntel Core i7-2630QM processor6 GB DDR3 RAM15.6" Full HD LED Screen2 GB NVIDIA GeForce GT540M with OptimusMy display was a little 'warm'. I mean that what should appear as white didn't appear white, instead it appeared creamy (i.e. according to RGB scheme, the red content in the display was more than what is required.)To fix this, I did thisRight Click Desktop > Personalize > Display > Calibrate Color and then adjusted the red and green bars to make the color settings proper. Now, the display is as I want it to be.The problem is that when the PC reboots or when an UAC window pops up, the settings are lost and again my display becomes 'warm'/creamy. I've tried going to Control Panel > Color Management and doing what this says:

I wanted to install more RAM, but Supermicro support told me I needed to update BIOS (flash it) to enable it to accept higher RAM.After I did this, the BIOS seems to have lost the record that boots my Windows 7 installation. After going through the checks, it just comes up with "Operating System not found."So I thought that, since I have two SATA drives, I could try installing Windows on my redundant disk to see if that might generate a dual boot menu.I was able to successfully install a fresh copy of Windows on the 2nd disk, but it will only boot into that one. It seems my system has completely forgotten about my other, working, installation. Is there a process for recovering the boot information and setting it up such that I can go back to using my other installation?

I think it may be a security policy setting on the PC. The issue is that I had to change some settings because we access a UNIX server for our old ERP, a Windows Server2008 for our new ERP, and use Windows Server2003s for our VPN, File and Domain controllers. For workstations we have a mix of XP, and Win7 machines. The only computers having issues are the Win7 machines. We use Dell Vostro 460's, doubt the stats are really necessary. But they run Win7 Professional 64-bit.So I had to flip the following settings to communicate with the UNIX server:Network security: LAN Manager authentication level = Send NTLMv2 responses onlyNetwork security: Mininum session security for NTLM SSP Based (both on the client and server) = No minimum (from 128-bit default)Network security: Restrict NTLM: Add remote server exceptions for NTLM authentication = I input the domain IP addresses and server nameNetwork security: Restrict NTLM: Add server exceptions in this domain = I input the domain IP addresses and server name
The only other system changes I made were dropping the User Account Control Settings to the second to the lowest setting (Notify me only when programs try to make changes to my computer...) because the constant pop ups are annoying. I also set the network user login as an administrator on their local computers when I set up their accounts on their computers.A few different scenarios play out:
1. When one of my employees is trying to access a network file (excel), she is unable to. The program will launch, but the file cannot be opened from her workstation. IN the lower right hand corner of the Excel window I will see the progress bar move, then it does nothing. The program will hang and has to be force closed. This file is on a shared drive on a Win2003 server (completely open to all domain users.)
2. When trying to save an IE9 file, the user is not able to change their target location, and when they do, it freezes IE9.
3. When trying to attach a file to an e-mail, the users are not able to browse their computers to find the files they want to attach.

I just accidentally changed my settings on my grapics card so that I can no longer see my desktop on the monitor connected to my HTPC. My HTPC has a monitor attached to it and it also has an HDMI out from the graphics card going to an LED TV in another room. I accidentally switched it so that the desktop can only be seen on the other TV in the other room.
All I can see on the monitor is the blank Windows 7 logo (no desktop icons) and I cannot navigate back to my AMD control page to undo this. I tried rebooting but this does not work. This is an issue as I don't have a bluetooth keyboard/mouse that I can use in the other room to control the desktop. How do I reset this? I am using a AMD HD 6750 graphics card.

I have tried rolling back the update, system restore etc but no joy. I can still see the shortcuts to the picture folders in recent places but cannot access the pictures.
Im not sure if this is an apple issue or a windows issue ill timed? Does anyone have any advise of how I might be able to access these pictures again? Ill try anything and of course i dont have a backup! (no one buys a house alarm until you get robbed!)

Under my USER file, I replaced the locations of all the main folders (Desktop, My Pictures, My Documents, etc) to A:UsersMEetc instead of being on C:UsersMEetc. This is something Windows 7 supports really obviously by letting you right-click on "My Documents," then go to "Location," and change it to another location.
However, upon auto-restarting from an update while I was asleep, it decided to "Prepare Desktop..." and then when it was fully booted, my entire user account was blank. There was a default theme, no shortcuts on desktop or start bar, all program history wiped from Start menu.
I restored the locations of everything in my User folder, but there are still problems. I can't drag files between folders -- I can CTRL+C then CTRL+V, but I can't actually just drag them. One of the programs in my task bar (Norton) won't open when I click it, only when I navigate through the start menu.
Also, after restarting once, the desktop loaded as completely black, with no images, and going to Personilize, I cannot choose ANY windows themes. It says "This theme cannot be applied to the desktop. Try clicking another theme." I can't get it to display any desktop images.
Lastly, I cannot change the default desktop items (My Computer, Network, Recycle Bin). No matter what I do, all of the icons are there and cannot be turned off.
Under "Previous Versions" on my C: drive, it will let me explore previous versions of the past two days, but it won't let me restore them entirely. I'd like to do this, given my whole computer is freaking out for unknown reasons. I'm doing a virus and spyware scan, but I don't think that's what went wrong. I don't want to reinstall right now

This may be difficult to troubleshoot because I have very few details about the computer in question. A friend called me because I am fairly good with basic computer problems. I'm not sure of the hardware specs, but it's a 2010 or 2011 model PC with Windows 7 installed. They did a Windows Update, and let it update just fine - they did not restart or shut down at all during the update. Once the update completed however, they can't open anything up.
Every time they try opening a program, they get an error message. Also, he mentioned that at first after the update, it wouldn't even boot up. He would get a message saying that he needs to restore to system defaults. Somehow, they got the computer to boot but it wont open any programs. How do you reset a Windows 7 computer to factory settings?

if this BSOD is anything for me to be concerned about. OS is Win 7 Pro x64 and the laptop is a HP 8740W. The system is rock solid as far as I know (it's stress-tested very often) and this is the first BSOD I've managed to get out of it. Win 7 was freshly installed around 2 weeks ago on the system and everything was updated. When the BSOD occurred I wasn't really doing anything except changing the Windows Appearance settings.I didn't manage to grab what it said on the BSOD screen except Win32k.sys.

I currently have an HP Pavillion G70 that has some broken hardware (hinges for screen) but other wise works fine. It's running Windows 7, Ultimate - 32 bit.
I'd like to buy a used version of the same PC model and simply swap the hard drive from mine into the purchased PC.
Will this retain all the programs, settings and files? Or are there some things that are tied to the motherboard or other hardware devices.
