Update Portable Programs And Maintain Settings I've Changed?
Nov 22, 2012
I have a few portable programs on my computer. How do I update them without losing any settings etc. that I have changed? Do I move ".ini files" and/or ".cfg files" and/or "whatever" out of the old version of the program and into the new?
I did an update and got a BSOD. Message said "Check disc"' After completion, all my programs and settings are lost. I have done Acronis backups, but they are gone. I tried to do a restore, but only date it gives is today's. Can I use the Windows 7 disc to do a repair or will I have to do a complete re-install? Also, after screen came back, I kept getting a "Windows Validation Failed" even though I clicked Validate online and it said "Validation complete".
I use my 4gb USB2.0 flash drive not only in order to save valubale documents, but also for portable programs. Since I got summer job in which my work-computers is changed frequently, I started using portable programs from my usb flash drive. Sometimes my work-pc's do freeze and I am unable to remove USB drive safely, so I corrupt my portable applications very fast.Maybe you know any tricks and tips on how to use flash drive as safely as you can in order to lose that risk of data corruption?I use NTFS file system, would FAT32 or FAT format be any safer in my case?
On my new PC with Windows 7 I logged in as administrator, created a folder "Portable Programs", installed my portable programs and data into it, set up Synctoy 2.1 to synchronise it with whatever portable device I like to use (sometimes I need a portable harddisk, sometimes a USB stick is more practical).
When I connected my portable device to an XP Home computer (in desperate need of data) the "Portable Programs" folder was there but it looked empty. XP was not able to run chkdsk.
Back home I saw that there was a lock symbol on this folder. I looked into the security settings, saw System and Administrator with limited rights and no other user or guest rights. All files inside the folder looked still disappeared. After changing access rights they were back and fully accessible... but will they still be on any other computer. I'd like to be sure before any next unpleasant surprise.
BTW I get the impression that MS is using Windows 7 in a secret battle against portability. So far none of my thinstalled programs run on Windows 7, Sandboxie is a real struggle.
i ran the program speedbit video accelerator and ever since then my computer notifies me that my browser settings have been changed. It does it more frequently at times and not so frequent at other times. Iv had another program on my computer for a few months that has run great everyday of the week up until today. Iv always run this program from the desktop shortcut, it has a system check and it always goes good except now when i try and open it from the desktop shortcut the system check looks like what i attached its supposed to have all green check marks. i can run the program now but i have to open it thru my internet explorer. and the desktop icon changed for the programs shortcut.
I recently installed an old game. I'm running Win 7 Pro x64 and the game was for XP. I messed with the compatibility settings and I think something went wrong. The folder icons have changed everywhere but on the desktop. The desktop shows the regular aero styled icons. Everywhere else the folder icons are some dumbed-down picture that looks low tech even for XP. Its bright yellow and has no 3D effects. To make it even more frustrating, it only does this when the view is set to details, list, or small icons, which are the only views I ever use. What button did I push and how can I fix this?
I have been incredibly stupid and changed the settings in my BIOS setup. What is even more stupid is I did this by making it "Load Optimal Defaults" so I dont actually know what has been changed. As a result of this windows 7 now cannot start, it brings you to the error fixing part where it searches for errors, cant find any and offers you some more options including system restore. Ive done a system restore but that has also not fixed it. I have little idea how to fix this, windows 7 was working perfectly until I changed the BIOS, but not knowing what was changed means I cant change it back. The BIOS version is: 4core1600twins-p35 p1.40.
my computer was getting too hot i went into the BIOS and changed a few things like turning off the auto-controlled fan sensors, FSB i put down to 200 and the CPU voltage I changed to 1.0Volts. I started up windows again. This time though, the option for "hibernate" had disappeared. So i looked up how to put it back on. and changed the power settings to "never" allow "hybrid sleep". So now i have the option to hibernate again. But the strange part was this. When I put my computer to sleep now. It apparently shuts down fully. (no more blinking light) then i turn it on and it re awakes from sleep. It's actually nice to have it this way. I tested it to see if i could disconnect the power fully and then still restore it back from sleep. Sure enough it lets me disconnect the power for up to 5 seconds then i plug it back in and it will still restore back from sleep. I guess my question is. Is the computer using even less power now to keep the information on the RAM. I read somewhere that on average your computer uses about 6 watts while in sleep mode.
My Acer Aspire one D257 will not restore. Error code is 0x8007191. All desktop icons when clicked go to "notepad" and "notepad" showing for everything to the left except for internet explorer. I have tried restore 6 times but it just comes back with. Bottom right hand icons still normal...files can be accessed through start docs. pics, etc. I have backed up to a remote drive all files for safety but just cannot get system or files to restore.System restore did not complete successfully. Your computors files and settings were not changed.Details System restore failed while restoring the registry from the restore point. An unspecified error occurred during System Restore (0x80071a91) The error code has just changed to the above.
My screen display is changed after a windows update. It's not as crisp and bright as before but is a bit blurry and hurts the eye.I have re-installed the latest driver of NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS but with no changes...Device manager displays NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS under Display Adapters..I have fiddled with NVIDIA Control Panel with no good result.I tried doing system restore but i did not have any restore points created ever which is a FAIL...Moreover, when I check Screen Resolution, only display option is 1. Display device on: VGA .... Isn't this supposed to include NVIDIA options?Monitor driver SyncMaster 732NW is updated as well..
I just accidentally changed my settings on my grapics card so that I can no longer see my desktop on the monitor connected to my HTPC. My HTPC has a monitor attached to it and it also has an HDMI out from the graphics card going to an LED TV in another room. I accidentally switched it so that the desktop can only be seen on the other TV in the other room.
All I can see on the monitor is the blank Windows 7 logo (no desktop icons) and I cannot navigate back to my AMD control page to undo this. I tried rebooting but this does not work. This is an issue as I don't have a bluetooth keyboard/mouse that I can use in the other room to control the desktop. How do I reset this? I am using a AMD HD 6750 graphics card.
I don't know if anyone else has noticed, but I believe the middle-click (wheel click) has changed behavior on the taskbar. When I used to middle-click on an icon (e.g. Internet Explorer) that's pinned on the taskbar, it used to pop up a new window.
Now whenever I do this, it brings me the alt-tab window selection. I suspect it happened after some update.
I have a Dell Inspiron with Intel Core I5. After Microsoft installed some updates, all the program and file shortcuts changes to a little square with dots. The same thing happens with shortcuts pinned to the taskbar. How can I get the pictures back? The computer ran a system back-up after this happened, but the desktop was already changed. If I restore the original system back-up from the disk will I lose the information I have added to the computer since then?
I was trying to download a trial of adobe photo shop to do my homework and i am on my moms laptop. i went to open the program and a dialog box popped up asking what program i wanted to use to open this file, (i didnt notice the checked box at the time stating it was going to use this option for all files associated with this extension!) and the only available program that was listed was WINDOWS MEDIA CENTER and i needed to use the program so i clicked on it.... wish i wouldnt have. it changed ALL my .exe programs ie; google, firefox, system restore and now anytime i try to run anything the media center comes up!!
I have seen on the web that several other people have done the same exact thing. I was freaking out cause this is not my computer and so i went to accounts and made a new admin desktop, which is what i am on now. i have found involves doing something on the actual desktop that is messed up. but i cannot open any executable files on that desktop ie;command prompt,so i cannot do anything on there.
i know there has to be some way to reverse what i did, i just need someone to walk me through the process so i dont screw the computer up any more than i already have, i am able to open system restore in the new desktop, i but dont think that will have any affect on the change i made let alone have an effect on the other desktop from this desktop. I also went to the place on the desktop to change the default for programs and .exe is not listed.
Is my CPU going bad? Startup error: "Warning! CPU has been changed. Please re-enter CPU settings"It is HomeBuilt, 6years old. ABIT AN8 mobo; Phoenix-Award Bios v6.00PG; Athlon 64 3500+; 4 Gig. Corsair XMS, 400 speed; CoolerMaster 650W PSU; Windows 7 home prem. on 200 Gig Sata HD.I like to shut down every night. Lately, it hangs with this error right after the flash screen of ABIT logo. It gives me the option F1 to continue, Del. to enter setup. If I punch F1, it promptly boots and runs just like always. The same time this showed up, my clock on desktop runs slow. Real Slow.So far I have scanned with MSE, then scanned with MBAM, I pulled the CMOS battery, then moved the CMOS jumper, waited several minutes, then re-set the jumper before I replaced the battery. Oh, yeh, "bout forgot I had a couple of extra hard drive hooked up, one Sata and another Pata, I unplugged both of them, also unplugged my USB flash drive also unplugged USB hub, and unplugged an old USB Zip Drive. I removed all that stuff before I re-set the Bios. Then, of course I reset both the calandar and the correct time.I googled the slow clock and somebody said to go into device manager> IDE ATA/PATA controllers and check the box "enable DMA" on each Channel. I did that.
Under my USER file, I replaced the locations of all the main folders (Desktop, My Pictures, My Documents, etc) to A:UsersMEetc instead of being on C:UsersMEetc. This is something Windows 7 supports really obviously by letting you right-click on "My Documents," then go to "Location," and change it to another location.
However, upon auto-restarting from an update while I was asleep, it decided to "Prepare Desktop..." and then when it was fully booted, my entire user account was blank. There was a default theme, no shortcuts on desktop or start bar, all program history wiped from Start menu.
I restored the locations of everything in my User folder, but there are still problems. I can't drag files between folders -- I can CTRL+C then CTRL+V, but I can't actually just drag them. One of the programs in my task bar (Norton) won't open when I click it, only when I navigate through the start menu.
Also, after restarting once, the desktop loaded as completely black, with no images, and going to Personilize, I cannot choose ANY windows themes. It says "This theme cannot be applied to the desktop. Try clicking another theme." I can't get it to display any desktop images.
Lastly, I cannot change the default desktop items (My Computer, Network, Recycle Bin). No matter what I do, all of the icons are there and cannot be turned off.
Under "Previous Versions" on my C: drive, it will let me explore previous versions of the past two days, but it won't let me restore them entirely. I'd like to do this, given my whole computer is freaking out for unknown reasons. I'm doing a virus and spyware scan, but I don't think that's what went wrong. I don't want to reinstall right now
Im running windows 7 premium,im getting another pc running windows ultimate,is there a way i can transfer all my programs over with there plug-ins installed and all the settings etc rather than install them all again one by one?
is there a way to backup my programs and settings and such so that I can restore them after a clean install? I've been having some problems with Windows 7, so I'm just going to start fresh. I don't want to be too fresh though =P I have a SSD and a HDD, so I'll be backing them up to the HDD.
For years I could open Task Mgr, and there were Tasks, Processes, etc, etc. all on tabs. Handy for looking at unlabeled tasks and seeing the processes that were running wild. Now, Task Manager has only that: Tasks. No tabs, no processes.
My offline files seems to work offline all the time, even when it shows me being online. I sync most of my business files to my laptop for working at home at night. When I edit a file from my Win 7 (pro, 64-bit) laptop, then go to edit it again, I get the version I had changed, but no one else does. This is causing huge difficulty, because my employees will start working in a sales forecast spreadsheet after I reconnect to the network and supposedly sync, but they don't get the latest version. Even doing a manual sync seems to make no difference.
I think it may be a security policy setting on the PC. The issue is that I had to change some settings because we access a UNIX server for our old ERP, a Windows Server2008 for our new ERP, and use Windows Server2003s for our VPN, File and Domain controllers. For workstations we have a mix of XP, and Win7 machines. The only computers having issues are the Win7 machines. We use Dell Vostro 460's, doubt the stats are really necessary. But they run Win7 Professional 64-bit.So I had to flip the following settings to communicate with the UNIX server:Network security: LAN Manager authentication level = Send NTLMv2 responses onlyNetwork security: Mininum session security for NTLM SSP Based (both on the client and server) = No minimum (from 128-bit default)Network security: Restrict NTLM: Add remote server exceptions for NTLM authentication = I input the domain IP addresses and server nameNetwork security: Restrict NTLM: Add server exceptions in this domain = I input the domain IP addresses and server name The only other system changes I made were dropping the User Account Control Settings to the second to the lowest setting (Notify me only when programs try to make changes to my computer...) because the constant pop ups are annoying. I also set the network user login as an administrator on their local computers when I set up their accounts on their computers.A few different scenarios play out:
1. When one of my employees is trying to access a network file (excel), she is unable to. The program will launch, but the file cannot be opened from her workstation. IN the lower right hand corner of the Excel window I will see the progress bar move, then it does nothing. The program will hang and has to be force closed. This file is on a shared drive on a Win2003 server (completely open to all domain users.)
2. When trying to save an IE9 file, the user is not able to change their target location, and when they do, it freezes IE9.
3. When trying to attach a file to an e-mail, the users are not able to browse their computers to find the files they want to attach.
i accidentally switched my default setting for opening all programs to 'windows photo viewer', but the programs are not opening now because of this. what is the default setting of windows for opening all the programs, and how do i restore it to the original settings.?
I changed a user from admin to standard after creating a new admin account. When I boot into the standard user, I am prompted by UAC for the admin password for 4 programs to start. All the programs are ASUS utilities that came with mymotherboard.I have checked the permissions of the programs and the User group has full control. Also, these programs do not show up in the MSCONFIG startup tab. I want the utilities to run but do not want to have to authenticate every time I boot
I have read several posts about issues with this already.I had an ECS P4M800 Pro-M V 2.0 with a Pentium 4 2.88. I had a primary and secondary hard drive as well as a DVD RW on it. My brother-in-law originally build the computer some years ago. I got the dreaded call the other day, "Honey, the computer won't turn on."DOA, fried MOBO. I ordered a Biostar A880 G + MOBO with integrated graphics, audio and LAN cards. Popped in an AMD Athlon 2 X 3 3.3G and two DDR 3 2G Ram sticks.Fired that puppy up on my old hard drive. It ran through some system checks, and nada. I keep getting back to nothing.I had a system backup set up to run, but the destination drive ended up being full, (without my realizing it) and now I'm up shit creek becuase the drive won't boot. I've got some important business stuff on that drive, which I know I can recover, but I would just like it to get up and run.
I currently have an HP Pavillion G70 that has some broken hardware (hinges for screen) but other wise works fine. It's running Windows 7, Ultimate - 32 bit.
I'd like to buy a used version of the same PC model and simply swap the hard drive from mine into the purchased PC.
Will this retain all the programs, settings and files? Or are there some things that are tied to the motherboard or other hardware devices.
I m using win 7 home premium . is there any sw available to maintain our personal details .. details like mail id , website , driving licence no or scanned driving license copy , Account number (not password) , blood group , etc., simply want to maintain every records and details of myself in a single file ..
