I have been reading that the amd phenom 9600 and vista 64 bit do not work very well together.I want to go to vista ultimate but if it is just a waste of money I am not going to do it with a broken 64 bit system.My mainboard is a phoenix technologies with a nvidia mcp61 rev a3 chipset and will there be a bio's update in the future to correct some of the problems and this is a gateway 7020

WinRAR = 454 w/TLB fix diabled Avg scores for my system 1,100
Call Juarez = 30 FPS Avg score = 45
Dont know whats wrong. Could it be a dead core? How can I check?
1) My WinRAR score with the TLB fix enabled is a sickening 80!!! vs 454 disabled. So I am certain that the fix was disabled at my score of 454.
2)Regarding number of active cores:
a) When I run task manager I see only ONE window for CPU in performance.
b) Running CPU-Z V1.49 shows ONE Processor ONE Core
c) CrystalCUPID V 4.15 shows only ONE of One cores (Code name Agena?) I should see 1/FOUR
d) In Vista Sidebar using mCPU Gadget: Shows Four cores HOWEVER
only ONE ever displays activity. I tested it by really loading up applications and Never saw activity of the other three cores!!!
I think I have a REAL Problem here. help

As a result of manufacturing defects and the inevitable fallout from it, it seems that Nvidia has gone from enjoying a few beautiful years on top to actually losing money recently. In particular, Nvidia saw a decrease in revenue for the second quarter of this year, resulting in a financial loss for the company.
In total, they lost over $120 million, and recent cuts in sales haven’t helped them out either. They outright admitted that they underestimated AMD, but nobody can really blame them for that. Yesterday, it was speculated that there were manufacturing defects in the G92 and G94 chipsets, on top of the already known bad parts in the G84 and G86 series. Nvidia may have tried to avoid blame here and there, but ultimately it is coming down on them and they have been stuck with warranty replacements galore. Even if the newer chipsets are fine, it doesn't do anything to remedy the mass amounts of defective ones already sold..........

The Phenom II are AMD's answer to Intel's newest chipset, the Core i7. Hoping to compete in the market with the Core i7 the Phenom II line of quad-core processors will be AM2+ compatible. The first two models to be released will have a clock speed that starts at 2.8GHz. However, one of the key bragging areas for AMD's line of Phenom processors is its overclockability.
AMD claims a 30-40% reduction in power consumption under full load thanks to their transition to a 45nm fab process. AMD has also stated that in addition to the 30-40% power consumption reduction that consumers can expect, they should also expect a 30-40% increase in performance over previous Phenom models.
In a demonstration, AMD displayed the overclocking power of the Phenom II X4, showing it hit 4GHz stable at 1.55v on air cooling with a temperature of 32?C. With water-cooling the CPU broke the 4GHz barrier with a 39?C temperature. For kicks and giggles the Phenom II was shown running stable at speeds higher than 5GHz on nitrogen cooling and even booted at speeds that were higher than 6GHz.
It's too early to say whether or not the Phenom II's can match the power of the i7's as we'll have to wait until benchmarks are released to do so, but the competition seems anything but idle. "

how can i overclock my cpu (AMD Phenom II X3 710 & Ecs Gf8200a Phenom-2 X4 Quad Core Mboard)? I do have Frequency / Voltage control in the bios. But i have never overclocked before so not sure how to do it correctly.

Does this mean we can't have 3 2GB sticks in the slots and we should get one more to even things up? (we had originally bought a 3 pack and I don't know if we can buy a single stick of that type here). View 5 Replies View RelatedI have been wracking my brain for weeks now, trying to play C&C First Decade with Red Alert 2 Yuri's Revenge over the LAN, it will only run on IPX networking which I could setup with 2x XP machines, I have Vista Ultimate on my PC, and XP on another, I found some drivers for IPX to work on Vista, didn't work ... So I loaded Hamachi which had built-in IPX support. Now when I open RA2, it no longer says IPX unavailable, it shows 00 00 00...
So it can see my Hamachi adapter with IPX support, great! The other XP machine has Hamachi installed, and they are both VPN'd (Connected) on the same Hamachi Network. They don't see each other... The XP machine shows a few IPX networks, I have tried switching to them all, even put the Hamachi adapter and the LAN adapter to the top of the preferred networks list. This was sort-of a breeze with both XP, but with Vista it's looking to be a bit tricky. I have no firewalls running on either machine and I am pretty cluey when it comes to networking (TCP/IP that is).
I recently tried to upgrade from Vista Basic to Vista Premium but the activation key didn't work. So I recovered Vista Basic from the windows.old file but there is still a corrupt version of Vista Premium on my hard disk. how to remove it?
View 9 Replies View RelatedMy eight year old Dell finally bit the dust and bought a new Gateway preloaded with Norton AV. I have a paid subscription through 01/09 with Windows One Care that I have used for three years with my Dell and never had problems with it. I have always disliked the hoggy Norton and McAfee AV's and will uninstall Norton on the new pc using the uninstall download from Symantec and probably some manual removal as well.
My question is : will WOC work with Vista?? Or should I use some of the free AV's ie Avast, AVG free, etc etc. My pc is only two days old and I don't want to spend days attempting to download new programs and fight with firewalls and potentially messing up new pc.
I have tried everything possible to get my HP PSC 500 to work with Vista, I had no problems with XP. The driver is there, but it presents an error when I go to print. I have contacted HP and they tell me because my machine, which is in perfect working condition, is 5 yrs old it will not work with Vista. I find this totally unacceptable and would like to find a solution to this other than spending more money unneccessarily to get a 2nd printer that I don't want
View 6 Replies View RelatedI've been dealing with this horrendous excuse for an email program for about 2 months now (thus my display name. my new computer came with Home Premium VISTA. I'm seriously thinking of getting my old original copy of XP installed back in my computer at some point. I'd do it myself, but I want to make sure I don't lose anything in the process. I've lost enough because of this fiasco already.
1) I can no longer use a rather expensive program that I bought to build web sites for small businesses (so therefore this also had a direct impact on my income as well as my frustration level). It won't work with Windows VISTA (because it's not a Microsoft product, of course).
2) I receive most email, but I have to check the spam folder constantly -- since I work online from home, and receive a good bit of business email at home that will often contain links, etc., VISTA reads it as "phishing" email and dumps it. And some it seems to dump in there for absolutely no reason at all...........
Has anybody tried this program with Vista & does it work well? Also, I'm not sure what I should shut down in the back ground. I don't want to mess my computer up.

I use this computer to store stuff and try new programs ect. I am wondering how much I will regret upgrading with this free disk. The system has a Pentuim 4 3.1 G CPU and only 512MB of RAM. I would really like to put vista on it but....512 MB of ram is not the 1GB they recommend. Is anyone running a system like this? What will happen? Will it just run slow and not have Aero because the graphics are not up to par either or will there be other problems?

It just seem to be my pc, is there any setting. I've tried different software and drives on my pc and have tried a life cam from microsoft and still no luck. Both pc are more then capable to cope with the job at hand.

Here is my situation: I have an HP Pavilion 6716 laptop with Quanta 30CC 79.26 mother board with a bus clock of 533 Mhz. I currently have two DDR2 PC2-5300 1 GB sticks of RAM in the machine (from factory) and all is well. I confirmed with HP that my machine can handle 4GB so I got two DDR2 667 2GB sticks of RAM (Kingston). If I put either one of the new sticks of RAM in I have no problems (first or second slot, makes no difference). But if i put both in I get the BSOD and first a PFN_LIST_CORRUPT error, then a reboot and then a IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL error and that's all she wrote. Put back the original RAM and all is well. I've read all about the MS KB929777 and I've uninstalled the patch then re-installed and it made no difference. Is there anything anyone can tell me or am I just shafted at 2GB RAM?

The BIOS was extremely out of date and could have been contributing the issues I had been dealing with. The download of the BIOS update came with WinPlash that would not work on this Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit OS. After going many round with ACER both online and over the phone I had to seek other help. I went ahead and tried using biosagentplus.com along with their tech support at www.esupport.com and eventually they were able to provide me with a version of WinPhlash that would work on my OS. Here is a couple of links to the latest versions of WinPhlash...... I hope this may help someone that is dealing with the same frustration as I did in getting a BIOS updated. It is always good to keep your BIOS updated! It assures compatibility with your OS, driver updates and it helps to extend the life of your PC or Laptop! It is a very simple matter to do and most new systems have utilities that will download software packages that all you need to do is follow the instructions. You do need to have the proper utility for your OS and BIOS that is on your system and websites Otherwise don't do it yourself unless you know what you are doing and getting yourself into or you could render your system unusable. Even if you are a tech like myself, it a BIOS flash utility doesn't seem to work right on your OS, don't force it and get a newer version. You made need a newer version then what the manufacturer of your system is providing just because you have kept current on OS updates and they have not with the BIOS flash utility.

I have a USB Logitech mouse. For reasons too lengthy to get into here, I want to hook it up via PS2.
So, I hooked it up with an adaptor. On bootup, the computer appears to recognize the mouse, as PS2 detection is enabled in the BIOS and the mouse's red light comes on.
However, when I get to my login page of Vista, the mouse doesn't work to control the pointer, and the red light is off. Even when I used the keyboard to just hit enter and log in as the "guest," the pointer will not respond when I got to the desktop.
Do I need to 'activate' the PS2 in Vista somehow?
I cannot get the Godfather game to work in Vista, It just wont load and says the program had to close due to a problem.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have been trying to install Vista for days now on my new gaming machine but it just won't work. I have a Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R Rev 2.1 mobo, Gigabyte 8800GT graphics card, 2 Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 320GB drives in RAID 0 and 4GB of TEAM Xtreem Dark PC2-6400 CL4 ram. I have been into the BIOS and enabled RAID and setup a RAID array in RAID BIOS. I have also downloaded the correct RAID driver from the Gigabyte website and I load it when windows prompts me. Here is what's happening.
Everything good during windows install until it gets to completing installation part. Computer restarts as it says and then continues to install windows. Screen goes black and I lose power to mouse, keyboard and all usb ports. If it is my RAID array being incorrectly setup what would it be that I have done wrong? The BIOS seems very simple so I don't quite know how I would have made a mistake. The only thing I can think of is the stripe size part which I left at 128KB.
I have 4GB of ram in 4x1GB sticks which came in pairs. I put one pair in one colour slot and the other pair in the other colour slot. Could this be an issue? I haven't done anything with the ram in the BIOS. In the BIOS do I need SATA AHCI Mode enabled? It's currently disabled. I put my drives in the yellow SATAII0 and SATAII1 ports and my cd drive in the SATAII2 port. Is this correct?
