Drivers For IPX To Work On Vista, Didn't Work
Jul 1, 2008I have been wracking my brain for weeks now, trying to play C&C First Decade with Red Alert 2 Yuri's Revenge over the LAN, it will only run on IPX networking which I could setup with 2x XP machines, I have Vista Ultimate on my PC, and XP on another, I found some drivers for IPX to work on Vista, didn't work ... So I loaded Hamachi which had built-in IPX support. Now when I open RA2, it no longer says IPX unavailable, it shows 00 00 00...
So it can see my Hamachi adapter with IPX support, great! The other XP machine has Hamachi installed, and they are both VPN'd (Connected) on the same Hamachi Network. They don't see each other... The XP machine shows a few IPX networks, I have tried switching to them all, even put the Hamachi adapter and the LAN adapter to the top of the preferred networks list. This was sort-of a breeze with both XP, but with Vista it's looking to be a bit tricky. I have no firewalls running on either machine and I am pretty cluey when it comes to networking (TCP/IP that is).

May 11, 2008My eight year old Dell finally bit the dust and bought a new Gateway preloaded with Norton AV. I have a paid subscription through 01/09 with Windows One Care that I have used for three years with my Dell and never had problems with it. I have always disliked the hoggy Norton and McAfee AV's and will uninstall Norton on the new pc using the uninstall download from Symantec and probably some manual removal as well.
My question is : will WOC work with Vista?? Or should I use some of the free AV's ie Avast, AVG free, etc etc. My pc is only two days old and I don't want to spend days attempting to download new programs and fight with firewalls and potentially messing up new pc.
Possible To Work HP PSC 500 With Vista
Mar 23, 2008I have tried everything possible to get my HP PSC 500 to work with Vista, I had no problems with XP. The driver is there, but it presents an error when I go to print. I have contacted HP and they tell me because my machine, which is in perfect working condition, is 5 yrs old it will not work with Vista. I find this totally unacceptable and would like to find a solution to this other than spending more money unneccessarily to get a 2nd printer that I don't want

May 14, 2008I've been dealing with this horrendous excuse for an email program for about 2 months now (thus my display name. my new computer came with Home Premium VISTA. I'm seriously thinking of getting my old original copy of XP installed back in my computer at some point. I'd do it myself, but I want to make sure I don't lose anything in the process. I've lost enough because of this fiasco already.
1) I can no longer use a rather expensive program that I bought to build web sites for small businesses (so therefore this also had a direct impact on my income as well as my frustration level). It won't work with Windows VISTA (because it's not a Microsoft product, of course).
2) I receive most email, but I have to check the spam folder constantly -- since I work online from home, and receive a good bit of business email at home that will often contain links, etc., VISTA reads it as "phishing" email and dumps it. And some it seems to dump in there for absolutely no reason at all...........

May 8, 2009i'd like to put my shadow copies on a different disk. anyone know how? details: event log tells me that shadow copies are having trouble finding space, and getting deleted. my intuition tells me a shadow on its own volume sounds incestuous. better on a different disk. just like pagefile. searching, i found vssadmin add shadowstorage /for=c: /on=t: /maxsize=10g but it doesn't work on vista sp1. what's that about? perhaps it's in the registry somewhere? anyone know...?

Jun 30, 2008I see that Microsoft is not going to offer XP any longer. Do they have any plans to get Vista to work with Outlook? I have Outlook 2000 and I have to enter the password each and everytime i log on, it is aggrivating. I am looking for another email program that has the tasks, that are as easy to use as Outlooks.

Mar 5, 2009I got a computer in Dec of 2006. 3 months later a Vista upgrade disk came in the mail. I have had it ever since. I use this computer to store stuff and try new programs ect. I am wondering how much I will regret upgrading with this free disk. The system has a Pentuim 4 3.1 G CPU and only 512MB of RAM. I would really like to put vista on it but....512 MB of ram is not the 1GB they recommend. Is anyone running a system like this? What will happen? Will it just run slow and not have Aero because the graphics are not up to par either or will there be other problems?

Feb 13, 2008I've done a lot of searching tonight so I know I'm not the first one to have this issue, but I haven't found any kind of satisfactory solution. Here is my situation: I have an HP Pavilion 6716 laptop with Quanta 30CC 79.26 mother board with a bus clock of 533 Mhz. I currently have two DDR2 PC2-5300 1 GB sticks of RAM in the machine (from factory) and all is well. I confirmed with HP that my machine can handle 4GB so I got two DDR2 667 2GB sticks of RAM (Kingston). If I put either one of the new sticks of RAM in I have no problems (first or second slot, makes no difference). But if i put both in I get the BSOD and first a PFN_LIST_CORRUPT error, then a reboot and then a IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL error and that's all she wrote. Put back the original RAM and all is well. I've read all about the MS KB929777 and I've uninstalled the patch then re-installed and it made no difference. Is there anything anyone can tell me or am I just shafted at 2GB RAM?

The BIOS was extremely out of date and could have been contributing the issues I had been dealing with. The download of the BIOS update came with WinPlash that would not work on this Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit OS. After going many round with ACER both online and over the phone I had to seek other help. I went ahead and tried using biosagentplus.com along with their tech support at www.esupport.com and eventually they were able to provide me with a version of WinPhlash that would work on my OS. Here is a couple of links to the latest versions of WinPhlash...... I hope this may help someone that is dealing with the same frustration as I did in getting a BIOS updated. It is always good to keep your BIOS updated! It assures compatibility with your OS, driver updates and it helps to extend the life of your PC or Laptop! It is a very simple matter to do and most new systems have utilities that will download software packages that all you need to do is follow the instructions. You do need to have the proper utility for your OS and BIOS that is on your system and websites Otherwise don't do it yourself unless you know what you are doing and getting yourself into or you could render your system unusable. Even if you are a tech like myself, it a BIOS flash utility doesn't seem to work right on your OS, don't force it and get a newer version. You made need a newer version then what the manufacturer of your system is providing just because you have kept current on OS updates and they have not with the BIOS flash utility.

I have a USB Logitech mouse. For reasons too lengthy to get into here, I want to hook it up via PS2.
So, I hooked it up with an adaptor. On bootup, the computer appears to recognize the mouse, as PS2 detection is enabled in the BIOS and the mouse's red light comes on.
However, when I get to my login page of Vista, the mouse doesn't work to control the pointer, and the red light is off. Even when I used the keyboard to just hit enter and log in as the "guest," the pointer will not respond when I got to the desktop.
Do I need to 'activate' the PS2 in Vista somehow?

Feb 8, 2008I have been trying to install Vista for days now on my new gaming machine but it just won't work. I have a Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R Rev 2.1 mobo, Gigabyte 8800GT graphics card, 2 Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 320GB drives in RAID 0 and 4GB of TEAM Xtreem Dark PC2-6400 CL4 ram. I have been into the BIOS and enabled RAID and setup a RAID array in RAID BIOS. I have also downloaded the correct RAID driver from the Gigabyte website and I load it when windows prompts me. Here is what's happening.
Everything good during windows install until it gets to completing installation part. Computer restarts as it says and then continues to install windows. Screen goes black and I lose power to mouse, keyboard and all usb ports. If it is my RAID array being incorrectly setup what would it be that I have done wrong? The BIOS seems very simple so I don't quite know how I would have made a mistake. The only thing I can think of is the stripe size part which I left at 128KB.
I have 4GB of ram in 4x1GB sticks which came in pairs. I put one pair in one colour slot and the other pair in the other colour slot. Could this be an issue? I haven't done anything with the ram in the BIOS. In the BIOS do I need SATA AHCI Mode enabled? It's currently disabled. I put my drives in the yellow SATAII0 and SATAII1 ports and my cd drive in the SATAII2 port. Is this correct?

The message is you are dumber than a three year old if you cannot get Vista to work properly. This ad is an insult to all levels of Vista users that reflects the hostility and contempt Microsoft's current regime has toward its customers. I don't think Bill Gates at his worst was that hostile to customers, just business competitors, which is an entirely different mindset. It must be Balmer. He is going to run Microsoft right into the ground. It hardly matters. If the future is in the clouds, and it likely is, then the OS is irrelevant anyway and it is just a matter of time before Google swallows Microsoft. I think Google would do a better job of running Microsoft than its current regime which seems to have the mentality of General Motors in the 1970s: they'll buy what we make regardless of quality or reliability.

I am using an ethernet to ethernet cable which has previously worked with my old XP PC and the same work PC. For some reason, I cannot get my Vista PC to allocate any IP addresses (you can tell I'm not very good with network settings...).
I don't have a router to use as a DNS, the PCs have been in the same workgroup but it made no difference. I can ping localhost on the Vista PC. There is no nice wizard to set up a wired connection on Vista, just wireless, dialup, VPN or connect to the internet. Grrrrrr.
