Windows Not Shut Down Properly, Give Safe Mode Option
Mar 26, 2008i bought a 64 bit version of vista and i have built a new system with an asus p5e mobo 4gb of ram 8800 gt graphics and everything shows to install at the complete installation time it reboots and it then tells me windows did not shut down properly and and give me the safe mode option or boot windows normally when i hit safe mode it says it cannot boot into safe mode and when i hit boot normally it says the computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected problem and cannot proceed. to install press ok to restart and start the whole installation process over again.

When I try it says that no codec is installed. what I need to download, preferably for free, to either get WMP to play DVDs, or a free player that's not too obnoxious with ads. I tried installing the K-Lite Standard Codec pack, but either I did it wrong or it isn't enough.

I tried using vista glazz to patch it back. I tried restarting multiple times. I tried switching to classic theme and back. Nothing works. I have Vista Ultimate 64. Here's a screenshot.

Apr 30, 2010This could start at any time apparently but once it does my whole computer freezes up for 9 seconds exactly, then it's fine for about 50 seconds or so, then frozen for 9 seconds, etc. This will repeat until I reboot the computer. I somehow manged to fix the problem and had completely forgotten about it until the other day.
I wanted to hibernate my computer but the options weren't there so I found this page and entered the commands into the Command Prompt: How to Re-enable Missing Hibernate Option in Windows Vista? - Tweaking with Vishal
It sort of fixed my hibernation, now the Start Menu power button would hibernate, but more importantly the 9 second freezes started up again. I quickly ran the Hibernation File Cleaner in Disk Cleanup which is apparently what removed the hibernation option in the first place, but no luck, hibernation was now gone and the freezes still continued....................
Restore XP Appearance For Windows Explorer?
Feb 6, 2009Is there any way to restore the XP appearance for windows explorer? I prefer the old tree appearance, icons and indentation. The vista version is too hard to see -- there is not enough indentation, I can't tell where I am. I also miss the "up" button.

Apr 26, 2009i'm kinda desperate atm. My laptop has this annoying habit of reverting back to windows standard/classic theme after almost every restart. I said almost as after 2/3 and sometimes even more, my aero theme correctly appeared. After another restart right after that, the problem occurs all over again. The search function in the start menu and windows explorer also 'failed to initialize' when in the said windows standard/classic mode.
I figured that this might have something to do with my user profile as I have the 'User Profile Service service failed the login. User profile cannot be loaded' problem once very recently but I've fixed it using the tutorial in this forum. The windows standard/classic theme problem had been on for quite a while back, before the user profile problem. Before all this happened, I've had this 'C:WindowsSystem32configsystemprofileDesktop refers to a location that is unavailable...' problem. I fixed that by copying all my files and folders in my C:Users[Username] folder to the location above and replacing all the files including desktop.ini. It is only after this that I've had the windows standard/classic theme problem.
I couldn't help but wonder if somehow my user profile has got something to do with it? Windows system restore could not fix this problem. By the way, I'm using a modified aero theme at the moment, using TuneUp Utilities 2009 on a Vista Home Premium 32bit Acer 5920G laptop.

Mar 26, 2008I was trying to change the appearance (using Vista Basic), have not idea what I did, but now all my text windows are light gray, the text is somewhat blurry and has a gray show tail after everything making very hard to read on my homepage and in Microsoft Mail. System Reboots Safe Mode Option Screen
Jun 21, 2008I have done a clean install of Vista Ultimate (64), and since then, everytime I start my computer, it fails to boot correctly. It passes the BIOS page, starts the animated bar at the bottom of the page, and a few seconds later, the screen goes blank, and my VDU gives the messgae, "NO SIGNAL" After about a minute, the system reboots to the BIOS page again and continues up to the animated screen, and stops again. After it self boots for a second time, I get the SAFE MODE option screen. If I leave it on START WINDOWS NORMALLY, and leave it to complete the 30s count down, It boots again, and then completes the boot into Vista. If at the count down screen, I press enter, it goes into a boot loop that doesn't stop until I press the reset button on my box.? I have done a re-install twice and problem continues.

This feature is very annoying, as right button dragging to a folder and selecting move will also deselect sorts as well. This is something I do all day long, and I have to click the name header to re-activate sorts after every file I move or copy. Why does explorer have this unsorted ability? Can it be disabled and act like XP? The Start - Computer - properties - option does not show it under Windows Edition as described in one post. I go to Windows Update and cant find it listed there as installed updates. Pretty sure now that its not installed. go to the download page and it directs me to Windows update for single PC downloads, WU takes over and says I am fully up to date! Advice in other posts says to let WU take care of it and it will download and install SP1.

Apr 29, 2008running Vista Home Premium (32-bit). When you log into Windows, you immediately get the error "Windows Explorer has stopped working". Then it says explorer is restarting, restarts your desktop, then is ok for about 3 seconds. The error then pops back up and it is stuck in that loop.
It started when he clicked on some popup he shouldn't have. I removed a trojan identified by Mcafee as exploit-byte verify. I have also disabled all startup programs and services (except windows services) through msconfig. However, I am still getting this error popup. Unfortunately, he had previously turned off the system restore option and got rid of the recovery partition.
XP Mode Under Windows 7

I'm currently running Vista Home Premium but thinking of changing so as to be able to do this. I've looked but haven't yet seen this application on a W7 compatibility list.

Like in MSCONFIG you select GAME BOOT then restart your machine with networking to play these more sophisticated games like Battlefield series or flight simulators or whatever.

"Stealth mode is enabled by default", but nothing about disabling. This behavior is against RFC and dramatically slows down security scanners installed in our network. So, is there any way of using windows firewall and being nice RFC compliant boy?

Aug 9, 2008I believe I have a (Vista Ultimate x64 RC-1? Already has SP1) cd. I can install it fine. I can then install the correct drivers for my hardware. And all works well, until... I use windows updates and select the 'important' only updates. After that, I'm stuck in a boot-loop. And by boot-loop, I mean I can't get into windows OR safe-mode. I have done this 2 times so far. It definitely only happens when I run the updates (can work perfectly fine for days w/o the updates).It's like I'm just now allowed to have an updated version of Vista. I made a restore point prior to the updates, so I can get back to where I was, but I obviously can't run an outdated OS all the time.

Mar 11, 2009I try to retrieve my mail, but Windows Mail remains in Offline Mode, and when I use the connection in the box, (the same one I am connecting to), it will disconnect me from the internet, and then give me an error stating that I canceled the retrieval. If I choose not to select a connection, it tells me also that I canceled the retrieval.
I have set IE to its defaults, and not to dial a connection, as well as Windows Mail is also set not to dial a connection, but it tries to dial anyway, as well as remain in OFFLINE MODE. HELP, I would like to retrieve my email some day.
