Is there any way to restore the XP appearance for windows explorer? I prefer the old tree appearance, icons and indentation. The vista version is too hard to see -- there is not enough indentation, I can't tell where I am. I also miss the "up" button.

Vista 32 When I attempt to bring up 'Sysem Restore' via the Programmes-Accessories route, it takes ages for the window to appear! Is this normal?
View 4 Replies View Relatedwhen I right Clicked a short cut, file or folder within Windows Explorer. It caused Windows Explorer to Hang/Not responding. Then Idecided to do an update to the Vista, so I ran the Upda5te option. My problem of right clicking appeared again? I went back into Safe Mode to find and re-do the System Restor from Sept 24th and it no longer exist? the select older than 5 days was grayed out.
I did not delete or do anything (that I'm aware of) to remove it. It was the last one on the list. Was it deleted automatically due to storage size allowed? In any case, is there a way to get it back? I need to fix this problem - of right clicking something and having Windows Explorer hang/not repond. Do I have to do a Vista Repair from my DVDs to get rid of the problem?
In Windows Vista the window title and icon has been removed in all instances of Windows Explorer. The result is a blank space in the window that just does not look good where the window title normally is placed.
Using a cool free utility called AeroBar you can restore the window titlebar title and icon. To use the utility visit Outils (http://www.psscript.net/utils.htm) and download AeroBar.exe (http://www.psscript.net/AeroBar.exe).
Install is a snap. Just copy the utility to the Start Up folder of your start menu. If you want to also show the folder icons, just rename AeroBar.exe to AeroBarIco.exe ...
running Vista Home Premium (32-bit). When you log into Windows, you immediately get the error "Windows Explorer has stopped working". Then it says explorer is restarting, restarts your desktop, then is ok for about 3 seconds. The error then pops back up and it is stuck in that loop.
It started when he clicked on some popup he shouldn't have. I removed a trojan identified by Mcafee as exploit-byte verify. I have also disabled all startup programs and services (except windows services) through msconfig. However, I am still getting this error popup. Unfortunately, he had previously turned off the system restore option and got rid of the recovery partition.
I dont know what has happened but evertime i turn my computer on the appearance has changed to windows standard, I change it back to Windows Aero and click apply and ok. I turn my computer on and its back to Standard.

I know it is possible to change the appearance of text on Vista, I believe it is called clear? I only suffer feint text (looks like ink is running out on printed paper) on certain things ie. The Spybot home page or some windows when down loading stuff from the net. Is there a tweak that brings ALL text up clean and clear?

After several months of fairly satisfactory operation apart from the normal unexpected shutdowns there is now a more serious problem. When online the fonts in drop down boxes are so small as to be almost unreadable. On the Google start page the "Google Search/I feel lucky" text is very small as is the text when I type in the search box. I thought this was a browser problem until I came to use Excel today and found the column widths had closed right down and the column letters and row numbers were very small.I have checked in "Advanced Appearance" and all the settings seem correct. The computer is not one I normally use but it seems to me that the whole appearance of the display is rather unusual, but this may be because I am used to XP.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI have MS Vista Basic Home Edition with service pack 1 and all updates current up to 6-1-2008 (there are today 6-4-2008 two updates waiting to be installed, but now I am afraid to install them due to the following problem). I have MS Office Home and Student 2007. My computer is a PowerSpec 32-bit with 2 GB of RAM and my monitor is an Acer 17? All of this was purchased about four months ago.
On 6-1-2008, when I turned on my computer I was notified of two MS updates (I do not use automatic updating), and installed them:
* Update for Windows Vista (KB947562)
* Definition Update for Windows Defender - KB915597 (Definition 1.33.9770.6)
My computer installed and then automatically shut down and re-started........
I wasn't quite sure if IE8 was the culprit, but it became apparent once I removed it. Internet Explorer 8 interferes with the functionality in Windows Explorer for Vista. Say for example: With IE8 installed, open up "Computer". Close it, then open it again. It should be instantaneous. But its not. A window will take over to 10 seconds to show its initial contents. Once its open though, its very fast because the instance is already running. But once it closes it will take another 10 seconds to open again. Internet Explorer 8 itself opens up very slowly even after the first opening. Can any Vista users verify this?
1. Install IE8
2. Go: Start > click Computer
3. Close that Window.
4. Repeat step 2.
Is it an instantaneous opening or does the window take more than 5 seconds to populate? Repeat those steps with opening Internet Explorer. Is it the same? If so, welcome to the club. Does Microsoft have any way to report this bug to developers?
Why can't I use system restore to restore back to certain restore points? I was only successful twice with it. When my laptap was new and when I used it after re-formatting my hard drive. On all occassions after those two instances I can never restore back to any restore point. It always says that "unspecified error" line. If Microsoft doesn't know what happend, how could I. Why did they bother putting system restore if it doesn't work all the time anyway. It gives you a false sense of security.

Also, same thing with Internet Explorer...I'm getting real sick of Vista's shoddiness..
I've been experiencing some problems with both Windows Update and Windows Restore, and from what I've seen, they appear to be related. The issues started (or were made apparent) when I tried to install an update a few days ago. WU was stuck at "Preparing installation / Creating a restore point..." (probably not verbatim since I'm on a Danish Vista) - and I really mean stuck, as I even tried leaving this overnight. This seems to happen consistently with updates, except when they're ones that don't make a restore point. In this case, however, the computer doesn't want to shut down. It simply gets stuck at "Do not shut down or power off your computer / Installing update 1 of 1...", with no HDD activity whatsoever (also tried leaving this overnight).
I can of course force it to turn off by holding down the power button, but this is hardly optimal since I still don't get the updates installed. Now, the other problem; I naturally wanted to try and roll the computer back a few days using Windows Restore - however I've found that this doesn't work either. I open the application, UAC prompts me, but the window never opens. -rstrui.exe- keeps running, but I don't get the restore window up.............
After installing SP2, on 5/25, System Restore seems to have stopped creating automatic restore points every 24 hours. I checked the Task Manger and it is set for 24 hours. It shows a restore point being created on 5/26. System Restore shows the last Restore Point being created on 5/25 about 1 hour after downloading.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a recent problem installing Windows updates on Vista Ultimate as the update process stays on 'creating restore point' forever. I've let it run as long as 7 hours in this state, with no change. It looks like the system is unable to make a restore point sucessfully. I know it has worked in the past, as I'm fairly up-to-date on Windows updates. Reading some other threads, I've tried using Disk Clean-up to remove all by the most recent restore points, and then try to disable/re-enable system restore - this part without success. When I check the system properties for System Restore, the System Restore button is greyed out. I've attached a screenshot of the screen for reference. I've checked the group policies to verify the System Restore is not disabled there.

1)Clock does not show on Add Gadgets, but there is a Clock.Gadget in "C:Program FilesWindows SidebarGadgets"
2)Also, under the Windows Sidebar Properties
a) "Restore gadgets installed with Windows" is disabled
b) "View list of running gadgets" shows me two instances of Notes,

I have a Dell XPS 420 desktop with a 750gb hd and a 1tb hd, 4 gb ram . I created playlists in windows media player. I tried to burn a dvd yesterday with ROXIO but couldn't figure it out. so I used Windows dvd maker. Then I tried unsuccessfully to add music. I did burn the picture slideshow successfully however most of my music won't open. I have some pictures in my music files and some music in my video files. Everything is messed up.
