MS Update On 6-1-2008 Changed Settings And Appearance

Jun 5, 2008

I have MS Vista Basic Home Edition with service pack 1 and all updates current up to 6-1-2008 (there are today 6-4-2008 two updates waiting to be installed, but now I am afraid to install them due to the following problem). I have MS Office Home and Student 2007. My computer is a PowerSpec 32-bit with 2 GB of RAM and my monitor is an Acer 17? All of this was purchased about four months ago.

On 6-1-2008, when I turned on my computer I was notified of two MS updates (I do not use automatic updating), and installed them:

* Update for Windows Vista (KB947562)

* Definition Update for Windows Defender - KB915597 (Definition 1.33.9770.6)

My computer installed and then automatically shut down and re-started........

Default Settings Mistake And Changed The Folder

Jun 10, 2009

I recently messed up real bad. I was playing Tiger Woods PGA Tour 08 for PC. And I went into the documents folder to try to delete the last saved game. When I did I made a mistake and changed the folder with a GCF file in it to open the GCF files with adobe reader. Now I can't figure out what program it originally was suppose to open with. So my question is: How do I change the GCF file folder back to it's default settings so it will open with the program that it's suppose to open with?

Windows Didn't Logon: Security Settings Changed To Default For File

Aug 14, 2008

My windows didn't logon after the following: checkdisk for inconsistency, followed by the message: "the security settings changed to default for file ___(counting)" <cannot remember exactly the words>. all this in blank screen, win vista logo.
battery emptied so the operation could not be copleted.

After restart, the computer entered the win vista logo, green brick running, then blank screen with mouse pointer, HDD working for 20-30 seconds, then NOTHING. I have tried, restore (from the installation disk) and Last good known configuration. I tried safe Mode, but still nothing.

Update Changed Desktop, New Icons And Wallpaper

Nov 26, 2009

1. Windows Vista Home Premium wanted me to update so I did.
2. Update changed my desktop giving me new icons and a new wallpaper. But my files in My Pictures and My Documents were missing.
3. I used the Start Search to locate them and cut-pasted them into the My Pictures and My Documents folders in the new interface.
4. I shutdown my computer after I was done using it.
5. I turned on my computer again and Windows reverted back to the older (pre-update) interface.
6. I checked and to my luck the My Pictures and My Documents folders were empty again........

Windows Update: Cannot Use Or Change Settings

Mar 5, 2010

I cannot use or change the settings of Windows Update in any way. I've tried reinstalling the Windows Update Agent, but nothing changes. I have found no way of uninstalling it either. This alone is not the biggest problem, but the program has set itself to default and downloads hundreds of MB's of useless updates daily, which forces me to wait 30 minutes before the laptop turns on, and another 10 minutes of "reverting changes" because they "were not configured properly". Is there any way to fix this besides reformatting or reinstalling the OS? Install missing files? Somehow disable the agent? Uninstall it?

Whole Appearance Of The Display Is Rather Unusual

Mar 27, 2008

Problem is with an Acer 5103 laptop running Vista Home Premium. After several months of fairly satisfactory operation apart from the normal unexpected shutdowns there is now a more serious problem. When online the fonts in drop down boxes are so small as to be almost unreadable. On the Google start page the "Google Search/I feel lucky" text is very small as is the text when I type in the search box. I thought this was a browser problem until I came to use Excel today and found the column widths had closed right down and the column letters and row numbers were very small.I have checked in "Advanced Appearance" and all the settings seem correct. The computer is not one I normally use but it seems to me that the whole appearance of the display is rather unusual, but this may be because I am used to XP.

Anyway, ever since I got it back to normal, the views in folders keep changing randomly. In my documents I always have the view as small icons. But now that's gone and it's just got them lined up in a single line. How can I fix it? SP2 RC For And Server 2008 Goes Public

Mar 4, 2009

Microsoft today released the Release Candidate build of Service Pack 2 (6002.16670.090130) for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 to the public. You can grab the standalone installer package from the Microsoft Download Center for 32-bit five languages and 32-bit all languages, 64-bit five languages and 64-bit all languages, as well as Itanium five languages and Itanium all languages. If you have Vista in English, French, German, Japanese, or Spanish, download the five languages package, otherwise get the larger "all language" version. There is also a five language and an all language.iso image available, as well as a patch that will allow you to get it via Windows Update. While this is a public release, it is still a Release Candidate, and Microsoft is recommending that the average customer "wait until the final release prior to installing this service pack" and reminding testers that "a Service Pack is not a feature release—we are not looking for new feature suggestions, only SP2 regressions, crashes, and confirmation of fixes we've made will be considered for this milestone." Office Accounting 2008

Sep 7, 2009

I got this with my office ultimate steal deal from Microsoft. First the deal, any one with and edu suffix email (valid) can get office ultimate 2007 for $59.95. Yes that part is true, I got it for the wife who is a teacher with and edu email address. Now my problem comes in with accounting 2008 that MS through into the deal for free. So I loaded it and love it. Here is the problem, every time I open my MS outlook which now has Business Contact Manager loaded into it, I get a pop up that wants me to back up my contact manager database. So I backed it up and the next time I open MS Outlook, same pop up asking the same thing. My only choice is a snooze tab which I can change and the max for that is 2 hours. It still pops up. Any body have a fix or work around for this?

Complete Antivirus 2008 Removal

A few days ago, the Antivirus 2008 pop-up appeared on my friend's new computer. It stated that he had 41 infections. HIs access to the internet was blocked, as well. In order to remove them, he had to pay for the service. After a bit of research, I discovered that it was a scam and attempted to remove it from his computer, via standard means (control panel, programs and features, uninstall). It appeared that some files were removed, but some were left behind. Those that remained still indicated that he had 41 infections and blocked his access to the internet, by indicating that the websites posed a threat........

Slow, Visual Studio 2008

Nov 29, 2009

I've been working for days to speed up Vista performance, have been through all the usual performance tweak tutorials (appearance/performance, start-up apps, etc) and am frustrated... In general Vista is not too bad performance-wise, but is very slow to open Internet Explorer and to find the first web page (OK after that), and is verrry sloooow to bring up or close Visual Studio 2008. Intellisense and typing in a project is nearly unusably slow. I have to type a few characters, wait several seconds for intellisense to finally pop up, type a little more, wait again (and again and again.) This box is my new dev box and I'm going to drop it over a cliff rather than work with it the way it is (not! But the temptation is there...)

In googling around, I don't see a lot of other folks having similar issues so I'm assuming that there is a setup or config or software or services or 'some' type of issue that is specific to my machine that can very likely correct the issue and get me back on track. I don't know where to start however, and am seeking some advice on where to start. As stated, I've already disabled all the startups (start up menu, msconfig) that I can, I think, and have already played with the appearance settings, and have even tried raising the priority on visual studio to 'Real Time' via the task manager And yes, things are better than they were, but the slow response time for Intellisense and typing in VS08 is killing me
