Complete Antivirus 2008 Removal

Jun 21, 2008

A few days ago, the Antivirus 2008 pop-up appeared on my friend's new computer. It stated that he had 41 infections. HIs access to the internet was blocked, as well. In order to remove them, he had to pay for the service. After a bit of research, I discovered that it was a scam and attempted to remove it from his computer, via standard means (control panel, programs and features, uninstall). It appeared that some files were removed, but some were left behind. Those that remained still indicated that he had 41 infections and blocked his access to the internet, by indicating that the websites posed a threat........

Dual Boot Removal

May 15, 2010

I was attempting to do a fresh reinstall my vista operating system and instead of installing it on the same partition as the original one so it would replace it. I installed it on a different partition. Now when i start the system up i have two vista operating systems to choose from. I was wondering how to remove the unwanted system?

I tried command prompt logging in as administrator and BCDEDIT/enum to get the boot info. And I read about how to delete the unwanted system by typing bcdedit/delete{identifier}/cleanup but that didnt work. Please forgive my ignorance because i am not familiar with this stuff at all. I finally did get my operating system installed/restored properly but still have the other partition that i would like to get rid of.

Taskbar Toolbar Title Removal

Sep 18, 2008

For toolbars started in the Vista taskbar, how do you remove the Title? The option doesn't seem to exist any longer.

i.e. under older windows you could:

If you add one or two toolbars to your Windows taskbar, regain some space. Right-click on your created taskbar and on the popup menu that appears, uncheck "Show Title." This removes the title description for your taskbar. If you know the programs on the taskbar by their icon and don't need to see the names of the programs, uncheck "Show Text" as well.

Does this no longer exist in Vista and that I can no longer reclaim the space?

CD-ROM Drives Bluescreen On Startup/use/removal

Mar 31, 2008

When I use the CD drive, it would open and bluescreen the comp. This is a new issue, it only happened today. I restarted and then tried to update drivers(they were the newest and vista compatible drivers, and they have worked fine for months) to no avail. I then un-installed the drives and tried to reinstall them. Vista bluescreened right away not allowing me to re-install them. On every start-up try from then on, it would get to the welcome screen and then bluescreen right away. Safe mode is the same way, loads the drivers then blue screens. I had to remove the cd-roms to boot and then check for any soultions.

Freezing Post-SP2 Installation (and Removal)

Jun 11, 2009

I recently replaced a bunch of things in my computer - basically everything other than the drives and sound card. Reactivation was a pain but seemed to go smoothly. I updated all the drivers in ths OS (Vista Ultimate, 32 bit) and let it "burn in" for a couple of days by running Prime95 and keeping an eye on temperatures, stability, etc. Everything worked fine - no apparent problems with hardware or drivers and things would chug along quite nicely.

I notice that SP2 is lurking in Windows updates, so figure what the heck - improve performance and stability a bit. So I went ahead and installed it. Unfortunately, to my dismay, there was a background installation of an updated version of Avira Antivirus that I had forgotten about. Something blew up and I had to hard reboot. SP2 had not been completely installed it (did not go through the part with the reboots). In any event, I tried it again and this time it did finish - no installation problems at all with SP2. Also completed the Avira installation, which also went fine...................

Freezes After Factory Reinstall And Removal Of Win7 Install

May 15, 2010

I own a Gateway NV52 that I purchased almost a year ago. Last month, I installed Windows 7 64-bit on it since I missed having Best Buy do the free upgrade. After the install, I re-downloaded and re-installed my old programs and somewhere during the process, the laptop keep freezing - just a black screen. It tended to happen when I plugged in my wireless mouse.

After trying to fix the issue for Win7, I gave up and re-installed Vista 64 from the Gateway recovery disks. After this fresh install, my USB mouse still seemed to be the issue, so I stopped using it. It seems to not be the problem, however, since it freezes randomly while in the middle of working in programs or idle and nowhere near transitioning to screen saver.

I've run antivirus and antispyware software and come up empty. I'm unsure what to do next, since Gateway tech support seems to be stumped as well. Are there any options I should check before breaking down and shipping this out?

Malicious Software Removal Tool (MSRT) Works.

Nov 24, 2008

I have started using the MSRT to clean PC's infected with Malware. My experience to date is that this tool does a better job, albiet much slower, than others available. An advantage is that unlike Spyware Doctor and Spy Huntwer it DOES NOT remove system files as malware, and I have found it will detect more spyware variants and remnants that other programs, including Malwarebytes leave behind. "The Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool does not replace an antivirus product. It is strictly a post-infection removal tool. Therefore, we strongly recommend that you install and use an up-to-date antivirus product.

The Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool differs from an antivirus product in three key ways: The tool removes malicious software from an already-infected computer. Antivirus products block malicious software from running on a computer. It is significantly more desirable to block malicious software from running on a computer than to remove it after infection. The tool removes only specific prevalent malicious software. Specific prevalent malicious software is a small subset of all the malicious software that exists today. The tool focuses on the detection and removal of active malicious software. Active malicious software is malicious software that is currently running on the computer. The tool cannot remove malicious software that is not running. However, an antivirus product can perform this task." The Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool helps remove specific prevalent malicious software from computers that are running Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003, Windows XP, or Windows 2000............

SP2 RC For And Server 2008 Goes Public

Mar 4, 2009

Microsoft today released the Release Candidate build of Service Pack 2 (6002.16670.090130) for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 to the public. You can grab the standalone installer package from the Microsoft Download Center for 32-bit five languages and 32-bit all languages, 64-bit five languages and 64-bit all languages, as well as Itanium five languages and Itanium all languages. If you have Vista in English, French, German, Japanese, or Spanish, download the five languages package, otherwise get the larger "all language" version. There is also a five language and an all language.iso image available, as well as a patch that will allow you to get it via Windows Update. While this is a public release, it is still a Release Candidate, and Microsoft is recommending that the average customer "wait until the final release prior to installing this service pack" and reminding testers that "a Service Pack is not a feature release—we are not looking for new feature suggestions, only SP2 regressions, crashes, and confirmation of fixes we've made will be considered for this milestone."
