I dont know what has happened but evertime i turn my computer on the appearance has changed to windows standard, I change it back to Windows Aero and click apply and ok. I turn my computer on and its back to Standard.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have MS Vista Basic Home Edition with service pack 1 and all updates current up to 6-1-2008 (there are today 6-4-2008 two updates waiting to be installed, but now I am afraid to install them due to the following problem). I have MS Office Home and Student 2007. My computer is a PowerSpec 32-bit with 2 GB of RAM and my monitor is an Acer 17? All of this was purchased about four months ago.
On 6-1-2008, when I turned on my computer I was notified of two MS updates (I do not use automatic updating), and installed them:
* Update for Windows Vista (KB947562)
* Definition Update for Windows Defender - KB915597 (Definition 1.33.9770.6)
My computer installed and then automatically shut down and re-started........
All of my picture icons were changed to standard-generic icons when I had my computer restored to the factory direct setting. Now they don't display anything except a flower, house, ect. My question is: How do I change the picture icon setting back so I can see a tiny preview thingy for each icon, instead of having to click on each one to see what they really are?

View 3 Replies View RelatedVista Home Premium, 32bit: I've read the tutorials here on how to enable DEP (Data Execution Prevention), but there are a few problems. First of all, there are two locations where different DEPs applications can be changed or turned off/on. The first one resides in the 'Advanced System Settings' > 'Performance' > Data Execution Prevention' tab. The two choices here are: Use DEP for Windows programs & Use DEP for all programs. Mine was set by default to the former, but when changed to the latter, web pages would no longer load ("server not found" or "unable to load..." So I had to reset to the default level. Q: What causes the problem? Is there a solution? Isn't my comp. better protected with DEP enabled for all programs? DEP's second residence is in IE > 'Internet Options' > 'Advanced' tab under 'Security.' The options here are to check or not box saying 'Enable memory protection to help mitigate online attacks.' The tutorial here tells me to right click on the IE7 exe. file, but I can't find it. Right clicking on IE in menu brings up 'Run as Admin' prompt then redirects/connects to 'hp.desktop.aol.com.' But by the time I get to the 'Enable memory protection...' box, it's grayed out & won't let me check it. Research says this is disabled by default. This is a new desktop. Shouldn't this DEP be enabled as well? .

View 6 Replies View RelatedBoth apart is quite straightforwad. Go to Options and select which you desire. But I am NOT able to achieve both. Tried two approaches: First I made a BMP-file with my signature and logo and used the stationary wizard to put that on left bottom of my messages. In the wizard I can also change the font and size. Easily done. But ... when I compose a mail the bitmap doesn't go down with the text which makes this approach quite useless.
Secondly I made a HTM-document with Word and again placed my signature and logo on the bottom. In Mail itself I tell to use font Calibri 12. The HTML-text scrolls nicely down when I compose a mail but it KEEPS typing in dull times New Roman 12. The 2nd approach is closest to what I desire apart from the font. Maybe there is a 3rd approach which I haven't found. Maybe there is a simple solution.
I just installed SP1 on my OEM Windows Vista Home Premium HP A1654n. After completing the installation, Aero is gone and is nolonger listed in the Windows Color and Appearance dialog. It was working perfectly minutes ago..

View 6 Replies View Relatedi'm kinda desperate atm. My laptop has this annoying habit of reverting back to windows standard/classic theme after almost every restart. I said almost as after 2/3 and sometimes even more, my aero theme correctly appeared. After another restart right after that, the problem occurs all over again. The search function in the start menu and windows explorer also 'failed to initialize' when in the said windows standard/classic mode.
I figured that this might have something to do with my user profile as I have the 'User Profile Service service failed the login. User profile cannot be loaded' problem once very recently but I've fixed it using the tutorial in this forum. The windows standard/classic theme problem had been on for quite a while back, before the user profile problem. Before all this happened, I've had this 'C:WindowsSystem32configsystemprofileDesktop refers to a location that is unavailable...' problem. I fixed that by copying all my files and folders in my C:Users[Username] folder to the location above and replacing all the files including desktop.ini. It is only after this that I've had the windows standard/classic theme problem.
I couldn't help but wonder if somehow my user profile has got something to do with it? Windows system restore could not fix this problem. By the way, I'm using a modified aero theme at the moment, using TuneUp Utilities 2009 on a Vista Home Premium 32bit Acer 5920G laptop.
is it safe to install Windows Updates logged into the machine as standard user (as opposed to a Computer Administrator)? Up until now I have always logged into the machine as the Computer Admin specifically to install updates - but is this necessary?

Now, I noticed that I can't change the color of any actual windows, and the icons are slightly different. Old "X" button icon: Mythical new X button icon:
I went into the control panel and noticed I couldn't find the menu that usually lets you change the color of the windows and such. All I can see is this: What the eff is going on? And I did virus scans with two different programs - they found nothing.
"A system change was made by a known application...change type: application execution...C:windowssystem32mswsock.dll". This happens when I connected to the network/internet and also disconnected from them. When I checked through Event Viewer, I found some errors:

I did a clean install of Windows Vista Home Premium and the system operates faster than with my previous set-up with XP. After updating some of my drivers from Windows update, I am satified with VISTA so far except that I noticed that Windows identifies my video card as a standard VGA. When I down loaded the Nvidia driver from Toshiba (QG20disp-7882), it seemed to install and operate correctly however Internet Explorer would not start after the installation. I tried several times with the same results. To get the internet working again I had to Restore the sytem to the previous standard VGA set up. This standard VGA set-up limits the ability to see videos with Media Center. Has anyone run into this problem and how can I solve it. Incidentaly the
NVIDIA card has 128 MB dedicated memory so it should be able to run AERO but it is not available.
Have bought a new laptop and changed to windows mail (Vista HP), have set up email using mhy existing email address. I can send emails ok but cannot receive. I get no error message and have copied server settings etc from previous laptop (XP H.E.).

When I changed it back, the Send/Receive window that shows incoming and outgoing mail popped up far to the left of the Windows Mail window, instead of right above it where it has always been. I re-started the computer, but that did not fix the problem. I want to get the Send/Receive window to pop up where it used to--it is currently nconvenient for viewing.

After several months of fairly satisfactory operation apart from the normal unexpected shutdowns there is now a more serious problem. When online the fonts in drop down boxes are so small as to be almost unreadable. On the Google start page the "Google Search/I feel lucky" text is very small as is the text when I type in the search box. I thought this was a browser problem until I came to use Excel today and found the column widths had closed right down and the column letters and row numbers were very small.I have checked in "Advanced Appearance" and all the settings seem correct. The computer is not one I normally use but it seems to me that the whole appearance of the display is rather unusual, but this may be because I am used to XP.

After restart, the computer entered the win vista logo, green brick running, then blank screen with mouse pointer, HDD working for 20-30 seconds, then NOTHING. I have tried, restore (from the installation disk) and Last good known configuration. I tried safe Mode, but still nothing.

Why would this be? I am forced to press the power button and wait from 5 to 10 minutes to reboot normally. View 7 Replies View RelatedI recently upgraded my graphics card from a Radeon 9600 to 3650 and that is where I struck problems. The standard VGA adaptor isn't working or became corrupt and when I installed the Radeon driver, the system froze after a short while. I have tried deleting adaptor, but that also removes "Display Adaptors" from the Device Manager, so even if I install the 3650 driver, it won't appear as installed. I have tried doing a clean install of Vista but the same thing occurs. On the other hand I have no problem with Windows 7 RC1 where everything works perfectly. What purpose does the VGA serve anyway since I still have a display without it working?
