Safe To Install Windows Updates From Standard User Account?

Nov 25, 2008

is it safe to install Windows Updates logged into the machine as standard user (as opposed to a Computer Administrator)? Up until now I have always logged into the machine as the Computer Admin specifically to install updates - but is this necessary?

Admin Account Added Standard User Account Will Not Open

Mar 23, 2008

I use a admin account on my computer but when I added standard user account it will not open some web pages for example when I go to my yahoo mail it will show the email but when I click on it, it will not show any text, but when I use the administrator account the web page works fine, I can see and read all emails. Another example is when I go to ask.com and search under the standard user it comes up as a blank page but will show search results under the administrator account. I have windows vista home and 7.0 explorer.

Standard User Account Logs Off.

Apr 13, 2009

When I my son signs on it comes back with logging off and logs him off. I am setup as an administrator and can log on without any problems, my son's account is setup as standard user account with parental controls turn on. I have deleted his account and created a new one as a standard user, I tried turning off parental controls and I still get the same problem. The only way around this I have found so far is to make his account an administrator. Which is not something that I want to keep this way.

Reset Guest Account To Standard User?

Mar 23, 2008

I managed to change the Guest account to administrator type. Tried to amend the type back to standard user with other administrator accounts without success. Even tried the hidden administrator account. The Guest account does allow the standard user option to be selected but nothing happens when this is applied, it remains as an Administrator. Anyone have any idea how to reset the Guest account to a standard user

Block Certain Programs On The Standard User Account

Sep 22, 2008

As a Mac OSX user I am trying to configure Vista Business and coming up against an apparent lack of functionality with regard to configuring user accounts. I say 'apparent' cos frankly I'm new to Vista so I'm not sure. Basically I have an admin user account and a standard user account. I wish to block certain programs (such as IE) on the standard user account.

Install Application As Standard User

Jun 28, 2008

I need to convert my old InstallShield project to work under Vista for Standard User account. But I really don't know how to perform simple tasks like create some keys in HKEY_CURRENT_USER or install/delete files to My Documents for user running installer. There is Admin rights UAC prompt at the beginning and all actions now are related to this admin account. But i need user account registry path and user documents path. Not admin's. What can I do? How can I access registry and directories for current user?

Create An Account For Another User I Cannot Create One, Either Admin Or Standard

Sep 13, 2009

I am running Windows Vista Home Premium 32 (system specs: laptop 2.1 Ghz core 2 duo, 4 gb RAM, 500gb hd (about half full) nvidia 8400M GS, Avira Premium Security Suite). I have had the computer for about a year running fine with 1 main admin account. Now when I need to create an account for another user I cannot create one, either admin or standard. When I create it, using either the control panel or command prompt, it creates the user picture, making the account visible on the control panel user accounts screen, and on logon screen. However, when trying to log into the new account I am greeted with the error "User profile service failed on logon. User profile cannot be loaded." The standard fix for this from various forums is to edit the registry key of the account. However, on going to regedit I see that no key even exists for the account. On further investigation I discover that no user files have been created either. I attempted a system restore, but discovered that all my past restore points were gone, and intruigingly, the computer had stopped createing 24 hour checkpoints. I cannot say for definite whether it was this issue or another one that caused system restore to mess up, as I don't check my system restore all that often. Either way, system restore is not an option. There have been mentions of a full Vista reinstall, though if at all possible I would like to avoid this.

Stuck In A Loop After Updates, Can't Get Into Windows OR Safe-mode

Aug 9, 2008

I believe I have a (Vista Ultimate x64 RC-1? Already has SP1) cd. I can install it fine. I can then install the correct drivers for my hardware. And all works well, until... I use windows updates and select the 'important' only updates. After that, I'm stuck in a boot-loop. And by boot-loop, I mean I can't get into windows OR safe-mode. I have done this 2 times so far. It definitely only happens when I run the updates (can work perfectly fine for days w/o the updates). It's like I'm just now allowed to have an updated version of Vista. I made a restore point prior to the updates, so I can get back to where I was, but I obviously can't run an outdated OS all the time.

Why Standard User Able To Replace Folder Ownership With Admin?

Jul 27, 2009

I have 2 accounts on my Vista Home Premium machine. One is an admin account with password and the other is a standard account without password (UAC off). I have multiple internal hard drives some of which has folders that I want only my admin account to access. I have denied all permissions for the standard account to these folders.

When I login as the standard user and try to open these same folders I get a pop up message saying that I don't have permission to access them and to click “continue” for access. Then I get a second message saying the same thing but there is a clickable link at the bottom to the "security tab" and it's suggesting to use to gain access. Once I click on that I get another "You don't have permission to change security setting" message in the folder properties window under the security tab.

At the bottom of that window it's also suggesting to click on the "Advanced" button for special permissions which will lead to taking the ownership from the admin account under the "Owner" tab by clicking "Edit", thus allowing full access to the contents of those folders. Does that make sense to anyone? I also noticed that the standard account has the ability to change the type to an administrator account from “User Accounts” in Control panel, is that normal?

Repair Install: Windows Updates Won

May 23, 2009

I have Vista Home Premium 32-bit, on Dell Inspiron 6400. After a repair install, I now have two problems: - Although there are 75 Windows Updates in the list, I have tried several times over the last two days to install these. So far, only a few are marked "Successful". The great majority are marked "Failed". - There is no SP1 available in the list of updates.

Here is the history:

- My laptop was pre-loaded with Vista (no SP1). The OEM DVD was also SP0.
- I installed SP1 when it became available.
- A few days ago, I neede to do a repair install. So I uninstalled SP1, and did a repair install as specified in Brink's tutorial:
Repair Install For Vista
- As far as I know, the repair completed successfully. There were no "Files discarded by Windows Upgrade" (Maybe this is important!). I was not asked for my product key, or asked to activate Vista.
- Immediately after the repair, I launched Windows Update, and found the two problems noted above.

BTW: To the best of my knowledge, my laptop is working fine. The minor glitches that prompted the repair install have disappeare.

Windows Updates Not Working After Sp1 Install

Apr 16, 2008

if their updates don't come through after installing sp1? If so, I have windows 32 bit os and it is set to install automatically at 3 am, but my compuer is always asleep then, but when I wake it up in the am, I used to get a windows symbol at the bottom right telling me there is an update avail.! Now, it won't do that after the update to sp1? I just recently changed the time to auto. update at 1 pm, when my computer is turned on, so I am waiting to see if it will do that. I have checked the options and they are set right, I just think that after the install of sp1 my os now does not recognize when there is an update avail.

Windows Updates Genuine Install

Why are most Windows important updates automatically installed and an occasional Windows important update is made available for me to manually install?

Windows Update Problems - Cannot Install SP1 And Various Other Updates

Jun 18, 2008

I have had many update problems with windows update (including windows vista sp1) due to "Code 80070246." I have tried many things (not including reinstalling OS)...including
Stop error when you try to download updates from Windows Update on a computer that is running Windows Vista: "0x80070246"

However when i tried following those steps, i got to step 6 and the Windows AIK Command Prompt said it "cannot find the path specified." I'm pretty sure i have the same error as that one though, meaning a corrupted GlobalInstallOrder.xml file. I don't think it can find that file because I'm using a 64-bit system. Should i try doing the same thing as the microsoft site except replace Windowswinsxsx86_microsoft-windows-servicingstack_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6000.16386_none_07289f4cca5f6990 with Windowswinsxsamd64_microsoft-windows-servicingstack_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6000.16386_none_63473ad082bcdac6 or do i have to do something else?

Maybe the problem isn't with GlobalInstallOrder.xml? I'm not really sure what to do.

Custom Installation Disc: Windows Updates Install Automatically

Mar 26, 2008

I'm wondering if there is a simple way to take your Vista Installation Disc and use it to create a custom installation disc that also includes updated drivers and updated hotfixes. The goal would be that during a clean install, those updated drivers and Windows Updates are installed automatically.

For a specific example, I use a USB Wireless Adapter. If I could create a custom windows disc that includes those drivers, then I my USB Wireless Adapter would be recognized and I could therefore allow Windows to connect to the Internet during Setup to see if there are any hotfixes and updates.

Windows Failed To Start: Shutdown And Install Updates In Vista

Oct 6, 2009

last night before bed I clicked shutdown and install updates in Vista. I woke up this morning and my computer will not turn on. It leads me to this: Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:

1. Insert your windows installation disc and restart your computer.

2. Choose your language settings, and then click "next"

3. Click "repair your computer"

If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assisance.

File: BootBCD

Status: 0xc000000f

Info: An error occured while attempting to read the boot configuration data.

problem I have is that I do not have vista installation dvd. I am currently studying abroad in Rome and will take more time than I have to receive the dvd in the mail. None of my friends here have one either, but they all have the same make and model computer that I do. Is it possible for one of them create a installation dvd that I could use? Or could they make a recovery disc that could as least get me to the system recovery options screen?

System Restore Applet Fails To Open / Windows Updates Download But Fail To Install

Jul 29, 2009

A friend's Vista SP1 PC is failing to install Windows Updates and also some other updates such as those for Itunes. The symptom is that the updates get downloaded but the installation phase never finishes (he's left it for 12 hours!). In the case of the Windows Updates, there are several updates that try to install themselves as the PC is shutdown or even restarted, but the message "Installing 1 of 6" never advances: the only recourse is to switch the PC off.

As I was looking at the PC, I noticed one thing which may have a bearing on this and may even be the cause: the System Restore applet (windowssystem32 strui.exe) fails to run. It displays an initial User Account Control window but the "Restore System Files and Settings - choose a restore point" window never appears. No error message is displayed and there are no entries in any of the Event Log logs.

It occurred to me that if System Restore is buggered, this might prevent any updates working if the first thing they try to do is to create a restore point before installation begins. I can't find any reference to System Restore failing to open its initial Window - I've looked on support.microsoft.com and done a general Google search for "Vista System Restore fails". All the info seems to describe possible problems if you get slightly further and select a restore point which then fails to install properly.

New Email Account: New AOL E-mail Account, Clicked 'Add E-mail Account' At The Bottom Of My 'Windows Live Account'

Aug 24, 2009

I have a Windows Live Mail account and a Yahoo account and they both show up on the left hand side of my Window Live Mail account so I can choose which account I want to use or, for example, which inbox to look in. At the bottom, also on the left hand side of my Windows Live Mail account, it shows 'Add e-mail account', which is what I want to do with a new 'AOL' account and I want it to show on the left hand side like the two other accounts.

So I made a new AOL e-mail account, clicked 'Add e-mail account' at the bottom of my 'Windows Live Account', then I put in my new AOL e-mail account and password where it showed me. Then I clicked next.

The next page was all about my email server. When I did this before with a new e-mail account, it was all filled out automatically for me, but this time, all the blanks were left open and I have no idea what to fill in. I believe once I have this information, the AOL e-mail account will automatically then show on the left hand pane of my Windows Live Mail account below the other two accounts.
