Windows Failed To Start: Shutdown And Install Updates In Vista

Oct 6, 2009

last night before bed I clicked shutdown and install updates in Vista. I woke up this morning and my computer will not turn on. It leads me to this: Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:

1. Insert your windows installation disc and restart your computer.

2. Choose your language settings, and then click "next"

3. Click "repair your computer"

If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assisance.

File: BootBCD

Status: 0xc000000f

Info: An error occured while attempting to read the boot configuration data.

problem I have is that I do not have vista installation dvd. I am currently studying abroad in Rome and will take more time than I have to receive the dvd in the mail. None of my friends here have one either, but they all have the same make and model computer that I do. Is it possible for one of them create a installation dvd that I could use? Or could they make a recovery disc that could as least get me to the system recovery options screen?

Why Too Many Windows Updates While Shutdown?

Oct 8, 2009

The initial configurations done as per the setup and wizard instructions provided by hp. After some time, suddenly the system performace was too slow and it has given me a huge shock and made me think like i've wasted my money! BUT after installed the windows updates, it's performance increased tremendously. There is always the alert which shows install Windows updates. Even when i tried to shutdown the system, it pops up 'Install Updates and shut down'.

So i've installed the updates almost every day otherwise it will not allow me to perform any operations. Is this expected behaviour? Can't we work without installing any windows updates atleast for a month? I am afraid may be some performance issue on this model! Due to these every day installation of windows updates, its killing my hard drive like anything.. Intially, in C drive, the free space was 243 GB of 260GB, now its reduced to 225GB of 260GB. I am loosing my memory because of this updates.

When I try to perform a wndows update, my 9 month old HP notebook keeps getting hung up or says the download failed. It just says it's downloading the updates but continually says 0 KB total and 0% complete, that goes unchanged for HOURS! I eventually have to stop the download but have several important updates that are waiting to be installed. I dont know what to do. HP says I must remove all saved document and file data and reinstall the whole operating system.

Updates After Boot And Shutdown

Nov 28, 2008

Sometime after 24/11/08 I installed about 4 vista updates, after which boot and shutdown times greatly increased. By which I mean, when you get the green sliding bar when booting, pre-update I would get between 6 and 11 bar progressions, after update I got 50 to 51, before completing the boot. I've now turned off updates completely and system restored back pre- 24/11/08, and alls well again. From looking at these forums it seems I am not along with update issues. I'll leave updates turned off I think.

Updates Configuring 3 Of 3 - 0% // Then Shutdown" And Repeat

Apr 5, 2009

First of all I would like to say I love this forum if it wasn't for this forum my Desktop/HDtv(as my monitor) would have a keyboard stuck in it. Why you might ask, well I was stuck on "Updates Configuring 3 of 3 - 0% // then Shutdown" and repeat. Also I'm a new Vista owner and so far its been shaky but I plan on over coming it. NOW!, To why I'm here, I keep my desktop empty and use the Dell Dock (Mac style Dock that came with my Dell). I cleaned out and disabled most of the stuff on the startup I don't need. So the problem I'm having is that the Dell Dock is the last thing to load after my antivirus and firewall and spyware programs. My question is, is there anyway to make the Dell Dock load first? Is there anyway to do this even with registry hacking? I want the Dell Dock to load up before most of the other startup programs.

Dec 19, 2009

I have a dell 1525 running vista home premium 32bit. Just a few minutes ago I was transfering music from my hard drive to my external hard drive, while on the internet looking at videos. I noticed that the file transfer process was taking a while so i decided to cancel the process. Some error message popped up after a while, being stupid I didn't write them down and kept watching my videos. My desktop disappeared and i cou;dn't start task manager so i decided to restart my computer... When I restarted I was greeted with "Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:

1. Insert your Windows installation disc and restart the computer.
2. Choose your language settings and click next.
3. Click "repair your computer"

It also gives me the following options:

4. Safe Mode
5. Safe Mode with networking
6. Safe Mode with Command Prompt

8. Start Windows normally

When I restart booting from the reinstall dvd from dell and i get to the repair my computer part, vista isn't listed in the options to repair. And I can't browse my main hard drive. Also when I start into safe mode, all the driver load then I get a quick flash of a blue screen which says(i video tapped it then slowed it down to read the message): A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.........

Windows Failed To Start, System Restore

Dec 29, 2008

My laptop (Advent 8117 running Vista if that helps) has been working fine, then this morning things went pear-shaped. To begin with things worked as usual - Everything seemed to load up as normal, I left the room for maybe 5-10 minutes and when I returned there was a black screen. I waited a while and nothing happened so I restarted. It comes up with 'Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause.' From there I can either start normally or run a repair. It doesn't seem to matter what I click here because I get a 'Techguys' support thing come up either way but now nothing on it works. To begin with I ran the Repair Environment, but it couldn't fix it. I also got to try a System Restore but I seem to have no points to restore to. Now I can't get the Techguys page to do anything. So I tried running in Safe Mode but once again I'm faced with the unmoving Techguys page, and the same goes for when I try and load from the Last Know Good Configuration. I desperatly don't want to have to lose everything.

I am building a brand new system and bit the bullet and am attempting to install Vista Ultimate 64 with SP1 (Brand Spanking New DVD with SP1 on it). Everything boots up just fine, memory is okay (4 Gb), install runs fine and after the reboot, I get the following: File: Windowssystem32toskrnl.exe

Status: 0xc00000e9

Info: Windows failed to load because the kernel is missing, or corrupt. (I purchased all parts and software from Newegg) When I go to the MS Support site and put in the Product Key, it tells me that it's in an invalid format. 5 - 5 - 5 - etc is what I have, however, Microsoft is wanting 5 - 3 - 5 -etc. format. I have pulled out EVERYTHING and disconnected EVERYTHING except the DVD, HD, and vid card, so I'm running it as barebones as I can.

Windows Failed To Start: Bootmbr Missing

Jun 18, 2008

I boot up my computer today and up pops a message about my bootmbr being missing. I, figuring this was quite bad, stuck in the ol' vista installation disk to run a startup repair. It does its thing, says its successful and tells me to reboot. I do, and get a new message at startup, saying,"Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause...
File: Windowssystem32
tkrnlpa.exe
Status: 0xc0000428
Info: Windows cannot verify the digital signature of this file"

So I figure I'm getting somewhere, load the disk repair, and I get "Startup repair could not repair the problem." along with other steps i should take to "send it to microsoft"() So now i run commands like chkdsk /p,bootmbr,bootfix (I've done this before). NONE of these do a darn thing to solve my problem. (Ive done the F8 thing with the load drivers w/o signatures; didnt work.) So, I figure i should take matters into my own hands. So i open up a CMD, and copy a ntkrnlpa.exe from my install disk and replace it with the one on my hard drive. Logical? I thought so. But same results. Except for one thing, when the repair thing runs again, the details say that the file "pshed.dll" is corrupt. I replace this one, doesnt work, and then says the ntoskrnl.exe is corrupt too.... I replace this one as well, but this one has remained corrupt. I sometimes get a new message when running the startup repair. System volume on disk is corrupt. But other times I get "Boot status indicates that the OS booted successfully." So Ive pretty much used all I can think of, short of booting BartPE and copying my important files and reinstalling. One more thing that happened. Last night (when everything was running smoothly) diskeeper did a boot time defrag. I think something went wrong and this is what is causing all this trouble.

Boot Failure 'Windows Failed To Start'

Jun 30, 2008

I'm currently having some serious problems with my main desktop pc Q6600, 4gb Ram, Vista 64 Ultimate where when I turn the machine on I get a message saying: 'Windows failed to start, A recent hardware or software change might be the cause File: WindowsSysWOW64DriversPxHelp20.sys Status 0x0000359 info: Failed to load because a critical system driver is missing or corrupt.' This problem started after I ran windows update a few days ago. its asked me to try putting the vista dvd in and run a repair, but that failed miserably. other things I would like to point out is that I am running a Raid (Stripe) on my system drive, so I cannot just take the discs out to recover the data. Is there anyway I can solve this issue whilst keeping the operating system intact? finally i'm running the OEM version of vista....I'm feeling pretty fed up as most of my important data is on these drives and ironically I was going to purchase a larger backup disc this month when I get paid.....

Repair Install: Windows Updates Won

May 23, 2009

I have Vista Home Premium 32-bit, on Dell Inspiron 6400. After a repair install, I now have two problems: - Although there are 75 Windows Updates in the list, I have tried several times over the last two days to install these. So far, only a few are marked "Successful". The great majority are marked "Failed". - There is no SP1 available in the list of updates.

Here is the history:

- My laptop was pre-loaded with Vista (no SP1). The OEM DVD was also SP0.
- I installed SP1 when it became available.
- A few days ago, I neede to do a repair install. So I uninstalled SP1, and did a repair install as specified in Brink's tutorial:
Repair Install For Vista
- As far as I know, the repair completed successfully. There were no "Files discarded by Windows Upgrade" (Maybe this is important!). I was not asked for my product key, or asked to activate Vista.
- Immediately after the repair, I launched Windows Update, and found the two problems noted above.

BTW: To the best of my knowledge, my laptop is working fine. The minor glitches that prompted the repair install have disappeare.

Windows Updates Not Working After Sp1 Install

If so, I have windows 32 bit os and it is set to install automatically at 3 am, but my compuer is always asleep then, but when I wake it up in the am, I used to get a windows symbol at the bottom right telling me there is an update avail.! Now, it won't do that after the update to sp1? I just recently changed the time to auto. update at 1 pm, when my computer is turned on, so I am waiting to see if it will do that. I have checked the options and they are set right, I just think that after the install of sp1 my os now does not recognize when there is an update avail.

Windows Failed To Start: Boot Critical File

When power came back on I rebooted Vista 32Bit and was able to login but there were errors (which I did not record). Vista informed me there were errors and suggested I reboot and run CHKDSK. I tried to run chkdsk next time windows load but after my bios loaded I had nothing but a Black screen. I waited for 8 hours and still black screen. So I booted from my Factory Dell CD and Vista was unable to repair automatically.

Windows Update Problems - Cannot Install SP1 And Various Other Updates

Jun 18, 2008

I have had many update problems with windows update (including windows vista sp1) due to "Code 80070246." I have tried many things (not including reinstalling OS)...including
Stop error when you try to download updates from Windows Update on a computer that is running Windows Vista: "0x80070246"

However when i tried following those steps, i got to step 6 and the Windows AIK Command Prompt said it "cannot find the path specified." I'm pretty sure i have the same error as that one though, meaning a corrupted GlobalInstallOrder.xml file. I don't think it can find that file because I'm using a 64-bit system. Should i try doing the same thing as the microsoft site except replace Windowswinsxsx86_microsoft-windows-servicingstack_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6000.16386_none_07289f4cca5f6990 with Windowswinsxsamd64_microsoft-windows-servicingstack_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6000.16386_none_63473ad082bcdac6 or do i have to do something else?

Maybe the problem isn't with GlobalInstallOrder.xml? I'm not really sure what to do.
