Boot Failure 'Windows Failed To Start'

Jun 30, 2008

I'm currently having some serious problems with my main desktop pc Q6600, 4gb Ram, Vista 64 Ultimate where when I turn the machine on I get a message saying: 'Windows failed to start, A recent hardware or software change might be the cause File: WindowsSysWOW64DriversPxHelp20.sys Status 0x0000359 info: Failed to load because a critical system driver is missing or corrupt.' This problem started after I ran windows update a few days ago. its asked me to try putting the vista dvd in and run a repair, but that failed miserably. other things I would like to point out is that I am running a Raid (Stripe) on my system drive, so I cannot just take the discs out to recover the data. Is there anyway I can solve this issue whilst keeping the operating system intact? finally i'm running the OEM version of vista....I'm feeling pretty fed up as most of my important data is on these drives and ironically I was going to purchase a larger backup disc this month when I get paid.....

Windows Failed To Start: Boot Critical File

Feb 13, 2009

I lost power to my home and my battery backup gave out before I got home to safely shutdown (I don’t normally lose power long enough to wipe out my backup). When power came back on I rebooted Vista 32Bit and was able to login but there were errors (which I did not record). Vista informed me there were errors and suggested I reboot and run CHKDSK. I tried to run chkdsk next time windows load but after my bios loaded I had nothing but a Black screen. I waited for 8 hours and still black screen. So I booted from my Factory Dell CD and Vista was unable to repair automatically.

Boot critical file C:Windowssystem32driversWdf0100.sys is corrupt
Boot critical file C:WDFLDR.SYS is corrupt.

Repair: Windows Failed To Start

Dec 19, 2009

I have a dell 1525 running vista home premium 32bit. Just a few minutes ago I was transfering music from my hard drive to my external hard drive, while on the internet looking at videos. I noticed that the file transfer process was taking a while so i decided to cancel the process. Some error message popped up after a while, being stupid I didn't write them down and kept watching my videos. My desktop disappeared and i cou;dn't start task manager so i decided to restart my computer... When I restarted I was greeted with "Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:

1. Insert your Windows installation disc and restart the computer.
2. Choose your language settings and click next.
3. Click "repair your computer"

It also gives me the following options:

4. Safe Mode
5. Safe Mode with networking
6. Safe Mode with Command Prompt
7. Last known good configuration
8. Start Windows normally

When I restart booting from the reinstall dvd from dell and i get to the repair my computer part, vista isn't listed in the options to repair. And I can't browse my main hard drive. Also when I start into safe mode, all the driver load then I get a quick flash of a blue screen which says(i video tapped it then slowed it down to read the message): A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.........

Windows Failed To Start, System Restore

Dec 29, 2008

My laptop (Advent 8117 running Vista if that helps) has been working fine, then this morning things went pear-shaped. To begin with things worked as usual - Everything seemed to load up as normal, I left the room for maybe 5-10 minutes and when I returned there was a black screen. I waited a while and nothing happened so I restarted. It comes up with 'Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause.' From there I can either start normally or run a repair. It doesn't seem to matter what I click here because I get a 'Techguys' support thing come up either way but now nothing on it works. To begin with I ran the Repair Environment, but it couldn't fix it. I also got to try a System Restore but I seem to have no points to restore to. Now I can't get the Techguys page to do anything. So I tried running in Safe Mode but once again I'm faced with the unmoving Techguys page, and the same goes for when I try and load from the Last Know Good Configuration. I desperatly don't want to have to lose everything.

Windows Failed To Start, Status: 0xc00000e9

May 2, 2008

I am building a brand new system and bit the bullet and am attempting to install Vista Ultimate 64 with SP1 (Brand Spanking New DVD with SP1 on it). Everything boots up just fine, memory is okay (4 Gb), install runs fine and after the reboot, I get the following: File: Windowssystem32toskrnl.exe

Status: 0xc00000e9

Info: Windows failed to load because the kernel is missing, or corrupt. (I purchased all parts and software from Newegg) When I go to the MS Support site and put in the Product Key, it tells me that it's in an invalid format. 5 - 5 - 5 - etc is what I have, however, Microsoft is wanting 5 - 3 - 5 -etc. format. I have pulled out EVERYTHING and disconnected EVERYTHING except the DVD, HD, and vid card, so I'm running it as barebones as I can.

Windows Failed To Start: Bootmbr Missing

Jun 18, 2008

I boot up my computer today and up pops a message about my bootmbr being missing. I, figuring this was quite bad, stuck in the ol' vista installation disk to run a startup repair. It does its thing, says its successful and tells me to reboot. I do, and get a new message at startup, saying,"Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause...
File: Windowssystem32
tkrnlpa.exe
Status: 0xc0000428
Info: Windows cannot verify the digital signature of this file"

So I figure I'm getting somewhere, load the disk repair, and I get "Startup repair could not repair the problem." along with other steps i should take to "send it to microsoft"() So now i run commands like chkdsk /p,bootmbr,bootfix (I've done this before). NONE of these do a darn thing to solve my problem. (Ive done the F8 thing with the load drivers w/o signatures; didnt work.) So, I figure i should take matters into my own hands. So i open up a CMD, and copy a ntkrnlpa.exe from my install disk and replace it with the one on my hard drive. Logical? I thought so. But same results. Except for one thing, when the repair thing runs again, the details say that the file "pshed.dll" is corrupt. I replace this one, doesnt work, and then says the ntoskrnl.exe is corrupt too.... I replace this one as well, but this one has remained corrupt. I sometimes get a new message when running the startup repair. System volume on disk is corrupt. But other times I get "Boot status indicates that the OS booted successfully." So Ive pretty much used all I can think of, short of booting BartPE and copying my important files and reinstalling. One more thing that happened. Last night (when everything was running smoothly) diskeeper did a boot time defrag. I think something went wrong and this is what is causing all this trouble.

None of my friends here have one either, but they all have the same make and model computer that I do. Is it possible for one of them create a installation dvd that I could use? Or could they make a recovery disc that could as least get me to the system recovery options screen?

Boot Failure - Dual Boot Situation

Mar 23, 2008

I have more or less completed all the driver upgrades and windows updates but I keep getting repeated boot failures of Vista. I can always get into Safe mode but in Normal mode the boot fails just after the first spash screen at the point when the screen goes blank to be replaced by the small circular Vista logo. After 2 or 3 attempts it succeeds to load but then the problem seems to reoccur, particularly when I have been back to XP for a while.

I had a similar problem with XP but that seems to have sorted itself out. I have tired looking in the logs for faults and failures but no clues there. I am running an ASUS P5E MB with Intel Quad 6600, 4Gig RAM, GeForce 8800GT and 2x250Gig HDs.

Windows Boot Up :5-10mintues To Start Up

Nov 12, 2009

I know there on serveral topics on this however I have tried a few methods already.sorry if i am indeed repeating a issue already addressed just slap the link on me please but anyway back to my problem. Apparently one day after i installed a Windows Update, my computer went haywire. It just wouldnt start up and made a couple beeping sounds. I took my ram out and put it back in and my cpu started up however the boot time took 5-10mintues to start up, i didnt exactly time it but it took much longer then my usual 30secs - 1min startup when my cpu was fine. I tried to fix it by changing the number of processors running and changing my startup programs but nothing worked. Now i leave my cpu on hibernate where it would be much quicker to logon rather then shutting my cpu down and going through that whole process. I decided to factory restore it and it still took 5 - 10mins.is it my hardware?

Windows Failed To Start "loading Windows Files"

Apr 26, 2009

When I switch my laptop on, I get the following message: "WINDOWS FAILED TO START. A RECENT HARDWARE OR SOFTWARE CHANGE MIGHT BE THE CAUSE...". I then have the option to launch system repair or start windows normally. Either choice I make has the same consequences...a screen launches saying "loading windows files" Then I am taken to windows loading screen with little green bar. Then the screen goes black. Not off, just black. If I try and do a system recovery, I go through the same steps via f11 but then I get the 'blue screen'. I didn't create the boot disks that one is supposed to do when they get vista.

Boot Failure - Never Gets To Login

Mar 28, 2008

I have a 3month old PC - clean installed with Vista Home Prem OEM. As of 8 days ago will not finish booting - simply ends with a mouse pointer on a black screen (pointer moves when mouse is moved). Have tried - everything - full memory diagnostics, chkdsk /r, System restore (found no restore points), all SAFE modes, Last good config. In place upgrade is disabled as it is an OEM build. Intel P35 chipset MB, E6850 CPU. No new hardware installed. No bug check codes displayed (no blue screen). Was fully up to date with WU, and drivers - and was running well since built. It is as if the profile is corrupt - but there was no indication of a problem. If this was Win XP I would do a Repair Install. Obviously no way to do that in Vista. This was before SP1 came out this week. The drive has been fully scanned for virii and spyware (HDD added to a clean working system and scanned), came up clean. I do not want to give up and clean install - there has to be another way. I have been a PC tech since 1986 - and VERY RARELY give up.

Dual Boot Failure With XP

Aug 28, 2008

I am an XP user but wanted to try Vista. I bought a retail copy of Vista Ultimate. I used the latest copy of Acronis Disk Director to create a second partition on my Sony Vaio. I then installed Vista on that partition. So far, no problems. The bootloader appears to be on the XP drive. While trying to get the proper drivers installed on Vista, the hard drive got corrupted, rendering it useless. I chose to delete the partition with Acronis. My XP partition is back to the normal size (I used Acronis to get it back). But the bootloader remains. I have a continued option to select Windows Vista (which of course is not there). How do I get rid of this option and boot directly into XP? It would seem that the XP MBR is hosed in some way. I understand that Vista no longer uses boot.ini. I don't think I want to proliferate the problem by re-installing Vista. I believe that I will just go out and buy a new notebook with Vista pre-installed. But I would like to fix my current XP installation.
