The last two weeks have been the worst in my life: I just got a new DELL XPS M1530 with VISTA HOME PREMIUM. How I wish I had not...The following is a copy of the logbook of my problems. Some of you may find my workarounds useful. I got most of the tips from random googling. As it took a while to fix each problem, I thought I should summarize some of the tricks, for reference. The following outlines all the steps I followed since getting the new machine two weeks ago......
Fix the following problem.
Windows Update error 8024402C
If you receive Windows Update error 8024402C while checking for updates, you might need to do one of the following: If the computer is connected to a network at work, contact a network administrator. You probably receive updates using Windows Server Update Services (WSUS), a service that enables network administrators to deploy and manage updates for all computers on a network. For more information about WSUS, go to the Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) website. If your computer is usually connected to a network at work (for example, if you use a mobile PC but you are currently using it at home or at another location), you probably receive updates using WSUS and can not receive updates by connecting directly to the Internet or to another network, such as a home network. To solve the problem, connect to the network at work and try checking for updates again, or contact a network administrator. If the computer is connected directly to the Internet or to a home network (and never connected to a network at work), you might need to set Internet Explorer to automatically detect local area network (LAN) settings so Windows Update can go online to obtain updates. To do this, follow the steps below.....
Will I still get Windows Updates if I don't install the Service packs for Vista & XP? If that happens won't my system be obsolete? remove "nospam" in order to email me.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have Vista Home Premium 32-bit, on Dell Inspiron 6400. After a repair install, I now have two problems: - Although there are 75 Windows Updates in the list, I have tried several times over the last two days to install these. So far, only a few are marked "Successful". The great majority are marked "Failed". - There is no SP1 available in the list of updates.
Here is the history:
- My laptop was pre-loaded with Vista (no SP1). The OEM DVD was also SP0.
- I installed SP1 when it became available.
- A few days ago, I neede to do a repair install. So I uninstalled SP1, and did a repair install as specified in Brink's tutorial:
Repair Install For Vista
- As far as I know, the repair completed successfully. There were no "Files discarded by Windows Upgrade" (Maybe this is important!). I was not asked for my product key, or asked to activate Vista.
- Immediately after the repair, I launched Windows Update, and found the two problems noted above.
BTW: To the best of my knowledge, my laptop is working fine. The minor glitches that prompted the repair install have disappeare.
if their updates don't come through after installing sp1? If so, I have windows 32 bit os and it is set to install automatically at 3 am, but my compuer is always asleep then, but when I wake it up in the am, I used to get a windows symbol at the bottom right telling me there is an update avail.! Now, it won't do that after the update to sp1? I just recently changed the time to auto. update at 1 pm, when my computer is turned on, so I am waiting to see if it will do that. I have checked the options and they are set right, I just think that after the install of sp1 my os now does not recognize when there is an update avail.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have configured my computer to automatically install Windows Important and Recommended Updates. Most Important and Recommended updates are installed automatically. Occasionally when I check Windows Update I get a message that an important update is available and I guess I would have to manually install it. For example, now important update Office Genuine Advantage Notifications is available for me to install. Why are most Windows important updates automatically installed and an occasional Windows important update is made available for me to manually install?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have had many update problems with windows update (including windows vista sp1) due to "Code 80070246." I have tried many things (not including reinstalling OS)...including
Stop error when you try to download updates from Windows Update on a computer that is running Windows Vista: "0x80070246"
However when i tried following those steps, i got to step 6 and the Windows AIK Command Prompt said it "cannot find the path specified." I'm pretty sure i have the same error as that one though, meaning a corrupted GlobalInstallOrder.xml file. I don't think it can find that file because I'm using a 64-bit system. Should i try doing the same thing as the microsoft site except replace Windowswinsxsx86_microsoft-windows-servicingstack_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6000.16386_none_07289f4cca5f6990 with Windowswinsxsamd64_microsoft-windows-servicingstack_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6000.16386_none_63473ad082bcdac6 or do i have to do something else?
Maybe the problem isn't with GlobalInstallOrder.xml? I'm not really sure what to do.
I am running Windows Vista Home Premium on my laptop. For last few days I have not been able to install windows updates. I get the error with code 80070641. After wandering through different forums and suggested solutions, I followed this path - control panel > system and maintenance > administrative tools > services > windows installer (double clicked and saw that the start-up type is 'Automatic'). When I clicked on the 'Start the service' button in the left panel here, I got the following message:
Windows could not start the windows installer service on local computer. Error 3: The system cannot find the path specified. Can anybody help me resolve this problem and bring the Windows Installer back on track?.....
I can't install Windows updates, every time I try I get this error code - 80246008. All suggestions from Microsoft refers to the BITS service, but this service is not listed in services list, so I really don't know what to do

I'm wondering if there is a simple way to take your Vista Installation Disc and use it to create a custom installation disc that also includes updated drivers and updated hotfixes. The goal would be that during a clean install, those updated drivers and Windows Updates are installed automatically.
For a specific example, I use a USB Wireless Adapter. If I could create a custom windows disc that includes those drivers, then I my USB Wireless Adapter would be recognized and I could therefore allow Windows to connect to the Internet during Setup to see if there are any hotfixes and updates.
last night before bed I clicked shutdown and install updates in Vista. I woke up this morning and my computer will not turn on. It leads me to this: Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:
1. Insert your windows installation disc and restart your computer.
2. Choose your language settings, and then click "next"
3. Click "repair your computer"
If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assisance.

problem I have is that I do not have vista installation dvd. I am currently studying abroad in Rome and will take more time than I have to receive the dvd in the mail. None of my friends here have one either, but they all have the same make and model computer that I do. Is it possible for one of them create a installation dvd that I could use? Or could they make a recovery disc that could as least get me to the system recovery options screen?
is it safe to install Windows Updates logged into the machine as standard user (as opposed to a Computer Administrator)? Up until now I have always logged into the machine as the Computer Admin specifically to install updates - but is this necessary?
View 7 Replies View RelatedA friend's Vista SP1 PC is failing to install Windows Updates and also some other updates such as those for Itunes. The symptom is that the updates get downloaded but the installation phase never finishes (he's left it for 12 hours!). In the case of the Windows Updates, there are several updates that try to install themselves as the PC is shutdown or even restarted, but the message "Installing 1 of 6" never advances: the only recourse is to switch the PC off.
As I was looking at the PC, I noticed one thing which may have a bearing on this and may even be the cause: the System Restore applet (windowssystem32 strui.exe) fails to run. It displays an initial User Account Control window but the "Restore System Files and Settings - choose a restore point" window never appears. No error message is displayed and there are no entries in any of the Event Log logs.
It occurred to me that if System Restore is buggered, this might prevent any updates working if the first thing they try to do is to create a restore point before installation begins. I can't find any reference to System Restore failing to open its initial Window - I've looked on support.microsoft.com and done a general Google search for "Vista System Restore fails". All the info seems to describe possible problems if you get slightly further and select a restore point which then fails to install properly.
iam new to windows vista and I have the latest build, but I have a widescreen 1440x900

Microsoft says I need some updates to Silverlight. I can't use the updates (error code 64C), I can't uninstall or Install it (the feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable.) What should I do?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have this problem with Vista64. After every updates from M$ I get this error: The file /windows/system32/hall.dll is broken and the error number 0xc00000e9. If I am a standard user I would have no chance to recover it. Sometimes it helps to put the install dvd in the drive and wait what happens. But sometimes I must recover this file directly from DVD with another computer and copy it to my system. Finally after approx. 2 hours of playing my system alives, but with the fear what the future brings. Has anybody same problem? If yes how do you solve it?

When i check the installed updates, they all show as failed.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI noticed that several weeks ago Microsoft changed the old good Updater to the new buggy one. Sometimes I cannot install updates because I cannot select them! I cannot fix by myself because I have no source code of Updater (Microsoft does not publish source code of their products for unknown reason).

View 4 Replies View RelatedI've tried numerous times to Install Vista Sp1, but without success. The install appers to go well, reaching 100% at stage 3, but then the screen reports the SP did not successfully install, and proceeds to roll back. On Checking the message in Windows Update, the install failed with error 80004005. I've raised the issue directly with MS, but the advice to install the SP in Safe mode has not helped. I've also trawled various forums and cannot find any reference to the specific error code.
I own a Sony Vaio VGN-FZ1. A number of forums seem to suggest it might be a hardware issue, and I have tried disabling / uninstalling various devices to
see if this helps, but this also has not got me any further. Has anyone else experienced this? Does anyone know what this error code means? Is there a way to force the SP to install despite this error code (it does get to 100% at stage 3 after all, so maybe it does install, but one of the packages check routines is picking up an error which doesn't really exist???)
I desperatly try to install this update (Security Update for Windows Vista for x64-based Systems (KB948590)) and the SP1 but i always get the error message,Update failed Code 80073712.
I have tried to install in safe mode but no luck,it seems all the other updates are all ok just these 2 giving me trouble.
