I shouldn't be surprised but here goes....I checked today for SP1 on windows update.. According to my computer no updates available however updates were last installed on 03/13/08 and yet when you look at installed updates it shows a windows defender update installed today. I have been reading several posts on this problem and have noticed that Carey Frisch posted a link to troubleshoot and now here is a problem and that is none of these apply to me... Once again Go figure!! Running Vista Business 32bit here in the good old USA and of course the English versionVista is and has always been updated right on schedule....

Windows Vista Home Premium. I used to know but forget... Can someone tell me where Windows stores newly installed updates? I want to uninstall the damned browser choice notice now being presented every time I boot. I just wish that unelected, corrupt bunch of crooks in the EU Commission would butt out. It was they who forced Microsoft to punish us this way. Although it would also have been sensible for Microsoft to add a 'Do Not Show Again' button.

The last two weeks have been the worst in my life: I just got a new DELL XPS M1530 with VISTA HOME PREMIUM. How I wish I had not...The following is a copy of the logbook of my problems. Some of you may find my workarounds useful. I got most of the tips from random googling. As it took a while to fix each problem, I thought I should summarize some of the tricks, for reference. The following outlines all the steps I followed since getting the new machine two weeks ago......
Fix the following problem.
Windows Update error 8024402C
If you receive Windows Update error 8024402C while checking for updates, you might need to do one of the following: If the computer is connected to a network at work, contact a network administrator. You probably receive updates using Windows Server Update Services (WSUS), a service that enables network administrators to deploy and manage updates for all computers on a network. For more information about WSUS, go to the Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) website. If your computer is usually connected to a network at work (for example, if you use a mobile PC but you are currently using it at home or at another location), you probably receive updates using WSUS and can not receive updates by connecting directly to the Internet or to another network, such as a home network. To solve the problem, connect to the network at work and try checking for updates again, or contact a network administrator. If the computer is connected directly to the Internet or to a home network (and never connected to a network at work), you might need to set Internet Explorer to automatically detect local area network (LAN) settings so Windows Update can go online to obtain updates. To do this, follow the steps below.....

HP customer service hasn't been able too in 5 attempts. Here's my problem: I'm running Vista Home Premium on an HP Pavillion dv9000 laptop. I was prompted to download the latest updates a few days ago and one of the updates was an option upgrade to Nvidia Display. Once I downloaded these updates, my computer hasn't been the same. My display is very fuzzy and hard to read, not to mention my icons are much much larger. I called HP, whom first told me to just do a system restore to the prior date. I did this and my computer indeed worked fine. For one day. At this point, all of the troubles started again when I started my computer up.
I again called HP, who instructed me to uninstall the nvidia driver and reinstall. I did this, twice...to no avail. It was at that point when I was in my device manager under "Display Adapters" that there is a yellow warning icon?? signaling trouble on the Nvidia GeForce GO 6150 that is installed. I click on this and the following message occurs: "This device cannot find enough free resources that it can use. (Code 12)".

I installed a few MS updates on my laptop running Vista Home and now when I go to a web site I can move the curser around but it does not let me click on any links. Can't even click on the X in the top right of the screen to get out of IE. I must Ctrl, Alt, Del, to get out of it. Was told to reinstall IE but how is that done?

I'm getting the message E_FAIL(0x80004005) when attempting to install Vista SP2. I've concluded that this is due to the custom boot manager I have installed. I've decided it would be too much trouble to un-install this boot manager, install SP2 and then re-install my boot manager. My question is, will future Vista updates be picked up correctly without SP2 being installed?

I bought this computer last Dec, 2008 with Vista Home Premium installed. It's had a full time DSL connection the entire time. It automatically receives the Windows Updates when the are available. In fact, it received a bunch of updates last night (6/11/08).I just checked "Welcome Center" again and it does not show SP1. I thought SP1 was supposed to be installed through these auto updates over the last month or so. Am I wrong? I'm sorry to say that Vista has been disapointing and very flakey. I was hoping that the SP would correct some of the bizarre behavior. Should I wait for the Sp1 auto update? Should I download it from MS? Should I skip SP1?

I have Vista Home Premium 32bit. A few weeks ago I tried to install a number of updates for Windows. After installing the updates, my computer tried to restart. On restarting, the system seemed to stall on a page that said completing install 1 of 3, 0% completed. After about 15-20 seconds, the computer shut down and then restarted. This continued to happen over and over and over. Finally, I manually shut down the computer by holding the power button for 10 seconds. Then I restarted the computer and was able to find my way to a system restore. I've tried several times to install the updates but I have run into the same problem. If anyone has any idea how to fix this problem so I can download the updates,

so i just got internet to my computer after almost 2 years of it being out of commission, it still worked and we were able to play games like solitaire and the sims but there was no internet hooked up to it. it installed all kinds of updates and one night i was listening to music via wmp and the next day i went to listen and it said "no audio output device is installed"
i tried updating the device and it said that my driver was up to date.
i also tried uninstalling it and rebooting my computer and that didn't work.
i don't see any error messages in the device manager, i clicked the icon with the little magnifying glass and nothing showed up.
i don't know what else i can do, besides take my computer and throw it into traffic.
i have alot of music on this computer that i listen to on a daily basis and would hate to have to switch it all to a new computer, or even buy a new computer for that matter just because my speakers aren't working.

I have this problem with Vista64. After every updates from M$ I get this error: The file /windows/system32/hall.dll is broken and the error number 0xc00000e9. If I am a standard user I would have no chance to recover it. Sometimes it helps to put the install dvd in the drive and wait what happens. But sometimes I must recover this file directly from DVD with another computer and copy it to my system. Finally after approx. 2 hours of playing my system alives, but with the fear what the future brings. Has anybody same problem? If yes how do you solve it?

My vista keeps locking up after various amounts of time, no matter whether its just idling, or im making the computer work hard. As ive read on other topics, I think its a driver issue, but I just dont know what to do. I will try another fresh vista install tomorrow and get the vista updates quickly to see whether that helps the situation. I have ensured it isnt overheating like it did initially when I bought the system, and it is now a safe and low temperature in a running state. Also, it only detects 3.5Gb of the 4Gb of RAM I have in my system. PC Spec:
Ive re-installed, windows, and it froze after I installed the chipset driver. I contiuned, and found a sound driver wasnt digitally signed. However it still crashes. I have got the latest drivers for it. For it to crash, all i did was open recycle bin, from idle state.

while back I had a Windows XP PC but it got dumb and crashed. So I just got my new Tower Which is Windows Vista-x64(Home Premium.) On my old machine I had a game I new and loved called Rayman 2 that isn't compatible to Vista. So my only option was to install it under Microsoft VPC 2007. It did Install but It wouldn't play. Here is the issue: I go To play the game and an error pops up that said I need to install DirectX 6.0 so I did. It didnt matter tho cuz I still had the error. So then I realized the error as telling me to configure the Graphics so It had another error when I Opened The "GXSetup."
Which was this: error1.jpg It Didn't Really matter because it still let me open the exe. But HERE IS WHERE THE REAL PROBLEM STARTED. The program successfully opened! But This is what it contained: MajorError.jpg My only thought was what the f*ck I am going to scream. Because from what it looks like Virtual PC Wasn't Detecting Much or anything at all to do with Graphics (the dropdown arrows contain absolutely nothing).

I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit edition Dutch Version, updated with SP1 and all the patches/updates until today. However, I have encountered two problems lately, that might be related. During one of the last Windows update sessions, one of the recommended updates was KB940157: Windows Search 4.0 for Windows Vista for x64-systems (11,8MB).
The update downloaded succesfully, created a restore point, but then during installation of Search 4.0, windows update stops and announces an update fail error:
Failed: 1 update
Errorcode: 800F0900
I've been googling this particular error code in combination with KB940157, but it doesn't bring up any entries. Then later on, I discovered that when I go into the Windows Components window (via Control Panel, Add/remove software), the entire windows stays blank (first it says "Wait a few moments..."). This only lasts a few seconds then shows a complete empty window.

update options give the user that choice and I just don't see why anyone
would choose that. Isnt the whole idea of automatic updates to keep your PC

Desktop PC will be one year next month. I did not renew the Microsoft Office after trial period that came as a package w/ no future intention of acquiring it. I'm using the free Open Office program - word processing mostly at this time. Is there anything in the list below that is of importance? I only have a basic PC with DVD player for movies, etc. No scanner, printer or fax. Not even external hard drive or usb flash drive. Otherwise, I understand that I can just choose to hide the updates, so it will not keep reminding me. Also, I choose to keep my OS w/ Srvce pk 1 and MS IE version 7 for as long as I'll be able to. I had too many probs with Srvce pk 2 and MS IE version 8. Your opinion, if any, is welcome.......

My windows update is unable to check for updates, an whenever I manually check for updates, Install now shows up, once the installation process begins, a couple of minutes go by and windows returns to checking for updates, and I am right back to Check for updates for your computer. I've checked the history, and so far KB948610 has failed 4 times, and KB953733 once in the past (windows apparently never tried again).

I've tried everything to fix my Dell Inspiron 1545 running Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit and I can't seem to work out what to do anymore. My laptop automatically did some updates earlier today and I rebooted as advised, unfortunately it failed to load up at all and I got a screen telling me windows has failed to start. Problem could be due to a recent change of hardware or software. The only recent change being the updates. I've tried to do a system repair, which hasn't worked. All it does is load a blank screen with, eventually a movable mouse cursor, nothing else happens after. I've tried to load from the boot cd also, but I have the same problem.
The white bar loads, message saying windows is loading files then as soon as its passed the blank screen and mouse cursor come up. I can't load anything in safe mode as it just comes up with the windows failed to start message. I'm at a loss, I think. And if I can't reinstall windows then it looks like my laptop is messed up completely. All I haven't tried is perhaps loading safe mode with command prompt and trying to do a system restore, and Repair Install For Vista this, which I'm not quite sure I understand fully. I might have had SP1 installed already. Anyone got anything they can chuck my way to advise me to do? I haven't had the laptop all THAT long.

I work as a computer repair technician on a college campus and had a question about windows updates. A little background, we do anywhere from 1 to 10 Vista installs a day, any version, mostly 32bit. We do have a program that will automatically install the OS for us and even some programs that we preconfigured. Pretty much we just enter the key and come back when the desktop appears. The install already contains SP1 and SP2. The problem comes when we go to update Vista, it takes FOREVER it seems like.
So my question is, is there any harm in downloading the Vista updates as standalone and having our Installer Program install them when the OS finishes installing. Is there a certain order that they have to be installed in? I also noticed that the Windows Update program installs some updates, has you restart, and then installs some more updates, and restart again. Would we have to restart in between update installs?
I've searched this forum and all over google and the only thing i can find is slipstreaming SP1 and SP2. We are just trying to make the install process faster so we can return the student computers back to them.

Is Vista SP1 necessary or recommandable before upgrading to Windows 7? Many people these days is upgrading from Windows Vista preinstalled on the PC to Windows 7. In case of a complete recovery it's necessary to reinstall Windows Vista and then upgrade to Windows 7 (if you have bought an upgrade and not a complete Windows 7 version).
Yesterday I did a complete recovery and did a reinstallation of Vista Premium. After installation of Windows Vista I have so far done approximately 100 Windows Vista updates and is now continuing with SP1.
I have a Windows7 upgrade and plan to upgrade Windows Vista to Windows 7. Could I had saved time upgrading directly from Windows Vista in the original edition without all the other updates before upgrading to Windows 7, or was, and is it correct to take this detour?
