I installed a few MS updates on my laptop running Vista Home and now when I go to a web site I can move the curser around but it does not let me click on any links. Can't even click on the X in the top right of the screen to get out of IE. I must Ctrl, Alt, Del, to get out of it. Was told to reinstall IE but how is that done?

According to my computer no updates available however updates were last installed on 03/13/08 and yet when you look at installed updates it shows a windows defender update installed today. I have been reading several posts on this problem and have noticed that Carey Frisch posted a link to troubleshoot and now here is a problem and that is none of these apply to me... Once again Go figure!! Running Vista Business 32bit here in the good old USA and of course the English versionVista is and has always been updated right on schedule....
View 9 Replies View RelatedWindows Vista includes a great little utility that allows users to finally make soft and hard file system links in the file system. This can be very useful from a software compatibility standpoint as well as a great way to organize your computer. Unlike a shortcut, a link is at the file system level and can be used to create an alias for a file or folder that is in a different location. For example, you can create a hard link (Directory junction) called c:win that points to c:windowssystem32. After the link is created, you can open up command prompt or explorer and browse to c:win and you will see the contents of c:windowssystem32. This is not a new technology, it has actually been a core Linux and Unix feature for as far as I can remember but it is nice to finally have it in Windows Vista....
View 0 Replies View RelatedHP customer service hasn't been able too in 5 attempts. Here's my problem: I'm running Vista Home Premium on an HP Pavillion dv9000 laptop. I was prompted to download the latest updates a few days ago and one of the updates was an option upgrade to Nvidia Display. Once I downloaded these updates, my computer hasn't been the same. My display is very fuzzy and hard to read, not to mention my icons are much much larger. I called HP, whom first told me to just do a system restore to the prior date. I did this and my computer indeed worked fine. For one day. At this point, all of the troubles started again when I started my computer up.
I again called HP, who instructed me to uninstall the nvidia driver and reinstall. I did this, twice...to no avail. It was at that point when I was in my device manager under "Display Adapters" that there is a yellow warning icon?? signaling trouble on the Nvidia GeForce GO 6150 that is installed. I click on this and the following message occurs: "This device cannot find enough free resources that it can use. (Code 12)".
For the past week or so, Windows Updates list some updates, but when I click INSTALL, it then state PREPARING TO INSTALL, and after a few minutes it just gives me an error that SOME UPDATE WERE NOT INSTALLED, and it is all the updates that are not installed. When it is for Defender I can always go downloaded them manually, but the others I can not because I do not know how to find them, so I would like to

I'm getting the message E_FAIL(0x80004005) when attempting to install Vista SP2. I've concluded that this is due to the custom boot manager I have installed. I've decided it would be too much trouble to un-install this boot manager, install SP2 and then re-install my boot manager. My question is, will future Vista updates be picked up correctly without SP2 being installed?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI bought this computer last Dec, 2008 with Vista Home Premium installed. It's had a full time DSL connection the entire time. It automatically receives the Windows Updates when the are available. In fact, it received a bunch of updates last night (6/11/08).I just checked "Welcome Center" again and it does not show SP1. I thought SP1 was supposed to be installed through these auto updates over the last month or so. Am I wrong? I'm sorry to say that Vista has been disapointing and very flakey. I was hoping that the SP would correct some of the bizarre behavior. Should I wait for the Sp1 auto update? Should I download it from MS? Should I skip SP1?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have Vista Home Premium 32bit. A few weeks ago I tried to install a number of updates for Windows. After installing the updates, my computer tried to restart. On restarting, the system seemed to stall on a page that said completing install 1 of 3, 0% completed. After about 15-20 seconds, the computer shut down and then restarted. This continued to happen over and over and over. Finally, I manually shut down the computer by holding the power button for 10 seconds. Then I restarted the computer and was able to find my way to a system restore. I've tried several times to install the updates but I have run into the same problem. View 4 Replies View Relatedso i just got internet to my computer after almost 2 years of it being out of commission, it still worked and we were able to play games like solitaire and the sims but there was no internet hooked up to it. it installed all kinds of updates and one night i was listening to music via wmp and the next day i went to listen and it said "no audio output device is installed"
i tried updating the device and it said that my driver was up to date.
i also tried uninstalling it and rebooting my computer and that didn't work.
i don't see any error messages in the device manager, i clicked the icon with the little magnifying glass and nothing showed up.
i don't know what else i can do, besides take my computer and throw it into traffic.
i have alot of music on this computer that i listen to on a daily basis and would hate to have to switch it all to a new computer, or even buy a new computer for that matter just because my speakers aren't working.
Windows Vista Home Premium. I used to know but forget... Can someone tell me where Windows stores newly installed updates? I want to uninstall the damned browser choice notice now being presented every time I boot. I just wish that unelected, corrupt bunch of crooks in the EU Commission would butt out. It was they who forced Microsoft to punish us this way. Although it would also have been sensible for Microsoft to add a 'Do Not Show Again' button.
View 9 Replies View Relatedmy friend's email is thru gmail. she has a links button (looks like chain links) that she uses to provide links to websites *without* showing the website address. it simply highlights a word she has typed and the mail recipient clicks on that word to go to the website. i think several words (a phrase) can be highlighted as well as just one word. so she might say, 'click here for more info' and the word *here* will be highlighted and contains the link. does windows vista mail have this feature? i cannot find it.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a microsoft wireless keyboard and mouse which work really well but when I reboot, the keyboard shortcuts that I have programmed don't work until I go into properties and click on them and then click ok. The keys then work ok until I reboot again.Is there any way that I can programme the changes so they are the default programmes whenever I reboot. The software loaded fine and I clicked on apply and save when I originally set the keys.....I have a HP Pavilion DV6700 Laptop with windows visa home premium which is about one month old.

After spending a lot of time trying to find a solution, here is the way I have solve the problem. Now the sidebar is just working fine. This behavior is observed if the XML registration is missing in the system. To fix the problem, use the following steps:
* Close Windows Sidebar. To do so, right-click on the Sidebar icon in the Notification area and click Exit
* Open an elevated Command Prompt window. To do so, click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator.

Desktop PC will be one year next month. I did not renew the Microsoft Office after trial period that came as a package w/ no future intention of acquiring it. I'm using the free Open Office program - word processing mostly at this time. Is there anything in the list below that is of importance? I only have a basic PC with DVD player for movies, etc. No scanner, printer or fax. Not even external hard drive or usb flash drive. Otherwise, I understand that I can just choose to hide the updates, so it will not keep reminding me. Also, I choose to keep my OS w/ Srvce pk 1 and MS IE version 7 for as long as I'll be able to. I had too many probs with Srvce pk 2 and MS IE version 8. Your opinion, if any, is welcome.......

I feel like something is wrong with the update system. I reinstalled Vista and disabled automatic updates. However, after a while I started to get the same problem. As ive read on other topics, I think its a driver issue, but I just dont know what to do. I will try another fresh vista install tomorrow and get the vista updates quickly to see whether that helps the situation. I have ensured it isnt overheating like it did initially when I bought the system, and it is now a safe and low temperature in a running state. Ive re-installed, windows, and it froze after I installed the chipset driver. I contiuned, and found a sound driver wasnt digitally signed. However it still crashes. I have got the latest drivers for it. For it to crash, all i did was open recycle bin, from idle state.
let me start this nightmare story i had just done a fresh restalled and spent hours on getting everything installed on pc all was fine working perfectly untill that is i installed vista service pack 1 from windows updates the update process crashed halfway through so i had the only option to restart my pc then came the blue screen of death and it metioned if you have any new hardware installed make sure all drivers are installed etc etc of course i know it wasnt hardware it was because of me restating my pc half way threw the service pack 1 and the full files not been installed threw the update process crashed was the reason for the blue screen but the blue screen had notes advising me to clear shadow memory in the bois and any other memory so i stupidly assumed this was channel mapping and bank mapping and put them all to zero please see jpeg of what i changed i basically disabled everything that was enabled and put all the mapping channels and bank channels to zero and now when i switch on my laptop i get a blank screen with no post no ...........

View 4 Replies View RelatedWhen I click on a web link in an application, it opens the url in MS Word, not Firefox (default bowser).
For example:
In CCleaner if I click the 'check for updates' link in the bottom of the window, Word will open up, a download box will appear and then it displays the website as a document.
This happens for all apps, however it doesn't happen if I click on a .html/.url document from explorer, that will launch Firefox just fine.
Since few days, links are blocked in my messages and the windows mail help talk about one information bar but I can't find it !

At first I thought this was an IE7 problem but after installing Firefox the problem exists there as well.
Problem:
Most of the links on web pages will NOT connect from this machine. For instance, using any Search Engine (Live search, Google, Ask.com etc) I can NOT connect to any of the sponsored links. When I copy and paste the named web address for that link then I connect without a problem.
I've posted in the IE and Firefox groups without even getting a suggestion.I had even uninstalled spybot and adaware and stopped the firewall and kaspersky but the problem remained.It looks to me like a security setting but I don't know where else to look.
You can no longer drag a url link from an email and drop it on an I.E. window. This used to be a good way of opening a webpage in a specific IE window instead of clicking the link which would open in whichever window it felt like - which might be over the top of a web page you want to keep open. Is this a problem with Vista mail or IE7 and is it likely to get fixed properly?

When I put the mouse pointer on any of the links a box pops up showing the link but with "blocked:: at the beginning. When I click on the link I get the following error box: "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Creat an association in the Set Associations control panel". None of this makes any sense. Disabling my antivirus/spyware had no effect, and the same message was ok on another computer.

View 7 Replies View RelatedSomehow, the submenu in the Start menu, where the shutdown/restart links are, doesn’t display the links (illustration is attached). I also have the same problem with the Quick Launch; when I click on the arrow to expand more icons, the submenu come up showing only a vague outline of the submenu box and no list. However, when I turn on my computer under Safe mode, the submenu is actually working fine and is showing all the links. For now, I just do Ctrl-Alt-Del to restart or shutdown. Everything else seemed to work alright. I have Windows Vista Home Premium SP2 32bit.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI love the 'Recent Places' link in the common file dialogs in Vista. I'd really like to add it to the 'Favorite Links' list in windows explorer.20 The following three links are added programmatically to all common file dialog boxes:=20
. Desktop=20
. Recent places=20
. Computer=20
These three links are not .Ink files in the Links folder. Therefore, the links cannot be removed from the Favorite Links list in common file dialog boxes. Additionally, these three links do not appear in Windows Explorer. This is a huge dissapointment, that doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Is there some registry hack or other technique that will effectively add 'Recent places' to explorer's favorites list?
