Slipstream Windows Updates? Not SP1 Or SP2.
Dec 16, 2009
I work as a computer repair technician on a college campus and had a question about windows updates. A little background, we do anywhere from 1 to 10 Vista installs a day, any version, mostly 32bit. We do have a program that will automatically install the OS for us and even some programs that we preconfigured. Pretty much we just enter the key and come back when the desktop appears. The install already contains SP1 and SP2. The problem comes when we go to update Vista, it takes FOREVER it seems like.
So my question is, is there any harm in downloading the Vista updates as standalone and having our Installer Program install them when the OS finishes installing. Is there a certain order that they have to be installed in? I also noticed that the Windows Update program installs some updates, has you restart, and then installs some more updates, and restart again. Would we have to restart in between update installs?
I've searched this forum and all over google and the only thing i can find is slipstreaming SP1 and SP2. We are just trying to make the install process faster so we can return the student computers back to them.

I'm wondering if vLite can be used in the same way in this tutorial to slipstream SP1 & SP2 into Office Home and Student 2007 and create an installation disk.
Could I follow the tutorial doing the exact same steps to accomplish this?

bxIHA.4848@TK2MSFTNGP05.phx.gbl> I've burned a new Vista Ultimate install disk slipstreamed with SP1 using Vlite. However...it will only perform a clean install, and not an upgrade on the existing Home Premium with SP1. I want to ?upgrade to Vista Ultimate. Running install with the slipstreamed Vista Ultimate w/SP1 I get these statements: "Upgrade has been Disabled" The upgrade cannot be started. To upgrade cancel install, then choose to upgrade to a version that is more recent than currently running" Is it because my current Vista Home Premium w/SP1 has been upgraded to the latest updates? And the slipstreamed DVD files are older, even with the downloaded SP1 files from Microsoft?

I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit edition Dutch Version, updated with SP1 and all the patches/updates until today. However, I have encountered two problems lately, that might be related. During one of the last Windows update sessions, one of the recommended updates was KB940157: Windows Search 4.0 for Windows Vista for x64-systems (11,8MB).
The update downloaded succesfully, created a restore point, but then during installation of Search 4.0, windows update stops and announces an update fail error:
Failed: 1 update
Errorcode: 800F0900
I've been googling this particular error code in combination with KB940157, but it doesn't bring up any entries. Then later on, I discovered that when I go into the Windows Components window (via Control Panel, Add/remove software), the entire windows stays blank (first it says "Wait a few moments..."). This only lasts a few seconds then shows a complete empty window.

Is there an "official" procedure to slipstream Vista SP2? I've seen various 3-party apps to do this, and even leaked downloads, but I'd rather do it the legitimate way if possible.

Just wondering why anyone would turn OFF the Windows automatic updates? The
update options give the user that choice and I just don't see why anyone
would choose that. Isnt the whole idea of automatic updates to keep your PC
up to date with important Microsoft information?

Desktop PC will be one year next month. I did not renew the Microsoft Office after trial period that came as a package w/ no future intention of acquiring it. I'm using the free Open Office program - word processing mostly at this time. Is there anything in the list below that is of importance? I only have a basic PC with DVD player for movies, etc. No scanner, printer or fax. Not even external hard drive or usb flash drive. Otherwise, I understand that I can just choose to hide the updates, so it will not keep reminding me. Also, I choose to keep my OS w/ Srvce pk 1 and MS IE version 7 for as long as I'll be able to. I had too many probs with Srvce pk 2 and MS IE version 8. Your opinion, if any, is welcome.......

My windows update is unable to check for updates, an whenever I manually check for updates, Install now shows up, once the installation process begins, a couple of minutes go by and windows returns to checking for updates, and I am right back to Check for updates for your computer. I've checked the history, and so far KB948610 has failed 4 times, and KB953733 once in the past (windows apparently never tried again).

I've tried everything to fix my Dell Inspiron 1545 running Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit and I can't seem to work out what to do anymore. My laptop automatically did some updates earlier today and I rebooted as advised, unfortunately it failed to load up at all and I got a screen telling me windows has failed to start. Problem could be due to a recent change of hardware or software. The only recent change being the updates. I've tried to do a system repair, which hasn't worked. All it does is load a blank screen with, eventually a movable mouse cursor, nothing else happens after. I've tried to load from the boot cd also, but I have the same problem.
The white bar loads, message saying windows is loading files then as soon as its passed the blank screen and mouse cursor come up. I can't load anything in safe mode as it just comes up with the windows failed to start message. I'm at a loss, I think. And if I can't reinstall windows then it looks like my laptop is messed up completely. All I haven't tried is perhaps loading safe mode with command prompt and trying to do a system restore, and Repair Install For Vista this, which I'm not quite sure I understand fully. I might have had SP1 installed already. Anyone got anything they can chuck my way to advise me to do? I haven't had the laptop all THAT long.

Is Vista SP1 necessary or recommandable before upgrading to Windows 7? Many people these days is upgrading from Windows Vista preinstalled on the PC to Windows 7. In case of a complete recovery it's necessary to reinstall Windows Vista and then upgrade to Windows 7 (if you have bought an upgrade and not a complete Windows 7 version).
Yesterday I did a complete recovery and did a reinstallation of Vista Premium. After installation of Windows Vista I have so far done approximately 100 Windows Vista updates and is now continuing with SP1.
I have a Windows7 upgrade and plan to upgrade Windows Vista to Windows 7. Could I had saved time upgrading directly from Windows Vista in the original edition without all the other updates before upgrading to Windows 7, or was, and is it correct to take this detour?

The initial configurations done as per the setup and wizard instructions provided by hp. After some time, suddenly the system performace was too slow and it has given me a huge shock and made me think like i've wasted my money! BUT after installed the windows updates, it's performance increased tremendously. There is always the alert which shows install Windows updates. Even when i tried to shutdown the system, it pops up 'Install Updates and shut down'.
So i've installed the updates almost every day otherwise it will not allow me to perform any operations. Is this expected behaviour? Can't we work without installing any windows updates atleast for a month? I am afraid may be some performance issue on this model! Due to these every day installation of windows updates, its killing my hard drive like anything.. Intially, in C drive, the free space was 243 GB of 260GB, now its reduced to 225GB of 260GB. I am loosing my memory because of this updates.

Wondering if you guys can offer up some good advice. I have had my pcfor about 8 months, all was working fine until a couple of months ago when after some automatic updates and a reboot, windows failed to load. I got a black screen with the following message
file name : NTOSKRNL.exe
status : 0XC0000098
Windows failed to load because a required file is missing or corrupt: Then it advised me to reboot from the cd and repair the program. Which i did, and then instantly turned off automatic updates, as i didnt want to risk the same thing happening again. And it seemed to be working fine, for about 2 months i guess............

I received 4 updates today and all 4 installed however one update KB961371 showed error 800703F9. While configuring updates it would show Stage 1 of 3-0%complete. Then it would show updates not configured propertly. I tried this several time, same results. I did a system restore and then tried installing only the security update, same results. After this I reinstalled the other 3 update with no problem. This is the first time I have had a update not to install. I am using AVG Internet Security 8.5 version, however I don't think this is the problem as I have received over 130 windows updates inthe past. I do have windows set to install updates automatically every day. I have contacted MS with this information but have not received a answer. To tell the truth I trust the forum more. I look up some information and this update applies to 2008 windows server Itanium-based system. I have a HP Pavilion s3120n with AMD 64 live processor.

The last time windows update found anything new to download was 4 weeks ago on Sept.9.I manually update at least three times a week. When I try to update it goes through the normal 30 second or so search routine but all I ever get is No New Important Updates Are Available For Your Computer statement.
I have gone to hidden updates and was able to download an update that was about 2 months old with no problem.I have Malwarebytes and VIPRE security so I normally have Windows Defender turned off,but on two seperate ocaisions I have turned Windows Defender back on and Windows Update searched and found updates and I had no problem downloading and installing them.It even found the update for the newer Windows Update that I agreed to and insalled.
My computer is a VISTA Ultimate 64xbit and is kept up to date as much as possible.

Vista Ultimate PC that is not downloading and installing Microsoft Updates. If a manual check for updates is initiated the user gets the error "Windows Is Unable To Check For Updates". One update, Office 2007 SP1, has been downloaded but if the user tries to install it Microsoft Update hangs. This problem appears to have come about because the PC is connected to an ADSL Modem/Router which hasn't been able to connect for three months. The ADSL problem has now been resolved. BITS and the Windows Update service are started and set to Automatic. I don't have easy access to this machine.

I have Vista Home Premium 32-bit, on Dell Inspiron 6400. After a repair install, I now have two problems: - Although there are 75 Windows Updates in the list, I have tried several times over the last two days to install these. So far, only a few are marked "Successful". The great majority are marked "Failed". - There is no SP1 available in the list of updates.
Here is the history:
- My laptop was pre-loaded with Vista (no SP1). The OEM DVD was also SP0.
- I installed SP1 when it became available.
- A few days ago, I neede to do a repair install. So I uninstalled SP1, and did a repair install as specified in Brink's tutorial:
Repair Install For Vista
- As far as I know, the repair completed successfully. There were no "Files discarded by Windows Upgrade" (Maybe this is important!). I was not asked for my product key, or asked to activate Vista.
- Immediately after the repair, I launched Windows Update, and found the two problems noted above.
BTW: To the best of my knowledge, my laptop is working fine. The minor glitches that prompted the repair install have disappeare.

Does anyone know if there's some reasonably easy way to get hold of all the windows updates for Vista x64 since service pack 1? I'm working on a slipstreamed disc and would like to include them, but it seems like it'll take HOURS of clicking.. And I *really* don't feel up to THAT task.
