Does anyone know if there's some reasonably easy way to get hold of all the windows updates for Vista x64 since service pack 1? I'm working on a slipstreamed disc and would like to include them, but it seems like it'll take HOURS of clicking.. And I *really* don't feel up to THAT task.
View 5 RepliesI've just upgraded to a new pc with vista and windows mail from Xp & outlook express (with virgin). To save my files and emails etc I used windows easy transfer software and copied the files to an external hard drive and then loaded it to the new PC. I initially had problems as my modem didn't install but virgin sent me a wireless connector and all seemed OK. However, when I click on send/receive mail I get an error message 'some errors occured while processing the requsted tasks - please see details below.' But there are no details! I have 3 email addresses.
If I click on the little arrow next to send/rec and then click on each email separately there is no problem. Equally, if I click on 'receive all' there is no problem. When I click on send/rec the first time I open windows mail there is no problem, but thereafter always the error message. I've had Virgin remotely controlling the pc for 90 minutes and they can't suss it!
Also, bizarrely at the top of the page it says inbox - outlook express provided by virgin net even though I appear to be running windows mail (it certainly isn't the usual outlook I have on my old pc). Did I inadvertently load outlook as well as my emails on top of windows mail and they've kind of merged?
I'm running Vista Home Premium on a 2 month old HP. There are 3 harddrives --- the original one from HP, the old one from my old computer(both internal), and a drive that is external, connected via USB, thatI use to hold my backup disk image files.For a few weeks, no problem. Lately, every time I double click on theexternal drive in Windows Explorer, Windows Easy Transfer startsrunning. If I right-click instead and then click on "Open", there'sno problem (Easy Transfer does not open). Any ideas on how to stop this unwanted loading of Easy Transfer?

I decided to use Windows Easy Transfer and for the most part it was easy except for Outlook. It seems to have replaced my existing Outlook 2003 OST files with those from my old pc (also Outlook 2003) - does this mean that I have lost the last 3 months of emails or is the file I am missing been transferred somewhere that I can't see anymore. When I try to access local settings the UAC tells me that I don't have permission?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have gone back to Vista after using Win 7. I used Windows Easy Transfer (WET)and loaded up an external drive. I found that Vista SP2 seems to have a slightly different WET gui and have not been able to xfer any data at all. I can get to the point of selecting path and password but then cannot get a path that the Vista version of WET will recongnize even though it shows up and can be selected the WET that is on the external drive. Went back to Vista to get ready for the release of the retail version of 7 and did not want to mess with the RC and eventual clean install next year.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI am trying to use Windows Easy Transfer to transfer documents and settings from a Window XP machine to a new Vista Professional machine. I am trying to do this over our network (SBS2003 if that's relevant). Windows Easy Transfer seems to be working fine to a point, but then it gets stuck on a particular file (on the XP machine) and doesn't continue. A flashing icon appears near the top right, but there are no options to skip a file or anything like that. I have tried deleting what I believed was the offending file, only to have WET stop on a different file. If there was a way to skip a problem file, that would be great, but the only time I see a prompt suggesting that I can do that is after I have already cancelled the transfer (on the XP machine).

Before uninstalling Office 2003 I stored some Outlook pst-files (e-mail, contacts and archive files). How can I import these files into Windows Mail/Contacts on my new laptop (Windows Vista/MS Office 2007 H&S). I tried Windows Easy Transfer, but it didn't work.
2. How can I import Mozilla Thunderbird files (e-mail, contacts) from the old laptop into Windows Mail/Contacts on the new one? The wizzard does not give the opportunity to select Thunderbird files.
If I decide to upgrade to Win 7 and do a clean install, could I use Easy File Transfer to retain my Outlook, Web Settings and Files? I have two internal hard drives, not raid, and an external eSATA drive. All 3 are the same size, 500GB. So I think I have the resources, I just don't want to lose data, favorites, contacts, files or emails. Having never used Easy File Transfer, how should I proceed? Store my easy transfere to my second HD "D", format C, install Win 7? I guess I need to buy a version of Win 7 that will read my Vista Easy File backup...duh... Is Win 7 Pro able to read Vista Easy File Transfers? I have two accounts on this computer, mine and my wife's, so there another issue too.

Rebooted a few times and still get the same error. I got tried chkdsk at reboot time and 'Repair your computer' using vista DVD instal disk.

Ive tried to send files, and it finds and recognizes the files i want to send... but when go to transfer them, hte flashes the disconnected sign near the exit button. I am advised by Belkin that their Easy Transfer Cable for Windows Vista is not 100% reliable for this purpose and they do not have a cable or software to do this job.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI like the simplicity of Paint, even with it`s limitations. But the one draw back that is really frustrating is its low dpi resolution. When I try to print image on to a larger format, usually paper poster, the image just does not hold up. The pixel becomes distorted and image is unrecognizable. I want to be able print my drawings on to much larger mediums. Whats the solution? Is there an upgrade version of Paint. Or can anybody give me an other solution. I already know about Photoshop, Corel etc...but I am a simple illustrator.

View 7 Replies View Relatedi dunno if i had a bad shutdown, a BSOD, or whatever, but every time i start up Hold 'Em, it always asks if i want to resume my saved game. it's always the same hand, same standing, and hence i can't advnace my stats. not much of a big deal since it's just and "extra", but the issue intrigues me. i took a quick look around the file system and was not able to find any directory for the game - i was hoping to delete the save file if i could find it.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI am attempting to transfer files & settings using the Belkin Easy Transfer cable from an XP computer to a Vista computer. All starts well by showing that the two computers are connected. But after finding the files and settings and providing the amount of data to be transferred, it starts gathering information but then shows a flashing disconnection icon in the upper right of both computers' transfer windows and freezes. This happens at a different place each time, but early in the procedure (after about 10 minutes). Would anyone have any advice? I have done everything by the book, as far as I'm aware.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm running Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit edition Dutch Version, updated with SP1 and all the patches/updates until today. However, I have encountered two problems lately, that might be related. During one of the last Windows update sessions, one of the recommended updates was KB940157: Windows Search 4.0 for Windows Vista for x64-systems (11,8MB).
The update downloaded succesfully, created a restore point, but then during installation of Search 4.0, windows update stops and announces an update fail error:
Failed: 1 update
Errorcode: 800F0900
I've been googling this particular error code in combination with KB940157, but it doesn't bring up any entries. Then later on, I discovered that when I go into the Windows Components window (via Control Panel, Add/remove software), the entire windows stays blank (first it says "Wait a few moments..."). This only lasts a few seconds then shows a complete empty window.
I can get the good old Windows Update interface back, somehow the interface as changed for something that is less usefull and easy to find what update I need to do or not.

i installed service pack 2 and other updates on this computer and now when i log into the computer the vista sound freezes and it will do a memory dump. It did this twice one at boot up and installing updates. I have never had any problem like this before and i'll put all the information about the error and the computer i am using.

Desktop PC will be one year next month. I did not renew the Microsoft Office after trial period that came as a package w/ no future intention of acquiring it. I'm using the free Open Office program - word processing mostly at this time. Is there anything in the list below that is of importance? I only have a basic PC with DVD player for movies, etc. No scanner, printer or fax. Not even external hard drive or usb flash drive. Otherwise, I understand that I can just choose to hide the updates, so it will not keep reminding me. Also, I choose to keep my OS w/ Srvce pk 1 and MS IE version 7 for as long as I'll be able to. I had too many probs with Srvce pk 2 and MS IE version 8. Your opinion, if any, is welcome.......

When I view update history when trying to install KB982536, I get the information - Microsoft.NET Framework 3.5 SP1, Windows Vista SP2 Failed.
2. I also get on Startup - "Error loading C:users.......CNMSS" Specified module could not be found.
The ribbon at base of screen states "Run DLL"
Are these two problems connected? ...
My windows update is unable to check for updates, an whenever I manually check for updates, Install now shows up, once the installation process begins, a couple of minutes go by and windows returns to checking for updates, and I am right back to Check for updates for your computer. I've checked the history, and so far KB948610 has failed 4 times, and KB953733 once in the past (windows apparently never tried again).
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've tried everything to fix my Dell Inspiron 1545 running Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit and I can't seem to work out what to do anymore. My laptop automatically did some updates earlier today and I rebooted as advised, unfortunately it failed to load up at all and I got a screen telling me windows has failed to start. Problem could be due to a recent change of hardware or software. The only recent change being the updates. I've tried to do a system repair, which hasn't worked. All it does is load a blank screen with, eventually a movable mouse cursor, nothing else happens after. I've tried to load from the boot cd also, but I have the same problem.
The white bar loads, message saying windows is loading files then as soon as its passed the blank screen and mouse cursor come up. I can't load anything in safe mode as it just comes up with the windows failed to start message. I'm at a loss, I think. And if I can't reinstall windows then it looks like my laptop is messed up completely. All I haven't tried is perhaps loading safe mode with command prompt and trying to do a system restore, and Repair Install For Vista this, which I'm not quite sure I understand fully. I might have had SP1 installed already. Anyone got anything they can chuck my way to advise me to do? I haven't had the laptop all THAT long.
I work as a computer repair technician on a college campus and had a question about windows updates. A little background, we do anywhere from 1 to 10 Vista installs a day, any version, mostly 32bit. We do have a program that will automatically install the OS for us and even some programs that we preconfigured. Pretty much we just enter the key and come back when the desktop appears. The install already contains SP1 and SP2. The problem comes when we go to update Vista, it takes FOREVER it seems like.
So my question is, is there any harm in downloading the Vista updates as standalone and having our Installer Program install them when the OS finishes installing. Is there a certain order that they have to be installed in? I also noticed that the Windows Update program installs some updates, has you restart, and then installs some more updates, and restart again. Would we have to restart in between update installs?
I've searched this forum and all over google and the only thing i can find is slipstreaming SP1 and SP2. We are just trying to make the install process faster so we can return the student computers back to them.
