Safe Mode Won't Work

May 4, 2008

I had tried to see if I could use one monitor for 2 computers and now I'm unable to get back to the way it was. In display settings they showed screen 1 and 2. I had asked to few screen 2 and that did it. There are no icons, nothing. Just background. No start either. I am however able to right click and get to the control panel, but some places will not respond like the one I need to get to. (Display settings) Safe mode won't even work. Can't even get to the registry.

Safe Mode Does't Work

Dec 8, 2009

I have a file on my desktop called gv.com.gamesforwindows_640x360.mov. It was a video about gaming. It's 45.5 MB and I can't get it to delete. Right-clicking it and doing Properties doesn't open the Properties window. If I move it to the recycle bin (with the keyboard delete button or the mouse, or Shift and Delete) the "Calculation time remaining" delete dialogue comes up and the progress bar keeps on flashing, but it never deletes the file. The file does not seem to be in use by any programs. Renaming the file or its extension doesn't help. If I try to add the file to Kaspersky Anti-Virus' quarantine, even Kaspersky freezes in a not-responding state. Opening the file crashes the player. Using many force-deletion programs doesn't work either. I have even opened the file with Notepad and deleted the gibberish-text and tried to save it but that crashes Notepad! Safe Mode also doesn't work. Is there any other way to delete this file without attaching the drive to another computer and trying to delete it from there? If I boot with the Vista DVD and enter command prompt through it's Repair centre, what do I enter to delete it from there?

Normal And Safe Mode Won't Work

Nov 24, 2009

Normal & 'Safe mode' won't work for me, 'Repair...' either, so before I restore, I'd like to backup via C:/. Commands such as 'copy' & 'xcopy' copy files & folders to another location. I have an 8GB SD, but I don't know what drive is the reader. I've tried to access Vista by typing 'Windows' @ the C:/, but this messags returns: 'WINDOWS' is not recognized as an internal or external command' Windows is listed @ the 'Dir' command! What are the advantages of the C:/ anyway? Is C:/ the same as DOS?

Sleep Mode Doesn't Work

Oct 19, 2008

Because my computer goes to sleep but will not wake (I talked about this before -- don't want to go over that again -- nothing works), I've been leaving it on all the time. I don't trust hypernation, since the sleep mode doesn't work properly. This problem may be caused by surges/glitches occuring via the cable modem (altho I really don't know what is causing it). This morning I worked on it for bout 1/2 a hour (it was working fine) but I came back a couple hours later to a frozen comp that I had to force boot via the surge protector (could not turn it off any other way). Luckily, I have Acronis backup which has saved this machine two times now within 4 months. I was able to boot using the Acronis rescue disk and restored a backup. is there any reason why I should not shut down everynite or when I am away from the machine for any length of time? I know shutdown is not recommended because Vista does things on its own like update programs such as Defender and Norton ISecurity (I turned off the auto d/l and install feature in windows -- I want to see what it plans to d/l and install, etc.) but I can do all the updates manually.

Blue Screen At Startup, Safe Mode Does Not Work?

Apr 8, 2009

I've got this major bluescreen issue. Two days ago, I just restarted my pc for no particular reason, and when it was about to start it gives me this bluescreen. It starts up, I get the loading bar, but then bluescreen. I tried to chose any of the safe modes, but none of them work, just gives me the bluescreen again. To sum all this, I can?t start my computer due to a bluescreen issue, not even with safemodes. It gives me alot of text, but the screen dissappears after a few seconds so I can?t even read two lines. I'm running a HP Pavilion m8055.sc with Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit

X64 New Install: Slow Internet Connection In Normal Mode; Fast In Safe Mode

Oct 12, 2009

Using my ISP (Roadrunner Carolinas) speed test site; I get around 200 to 400 kbps download speeds using IE in normal mode. If I boot to Safe Mode, I get around 3500 to 4500 kbps, which is what it should be (this is what I used to get in normal mode before I re-installed Vista). Running the same speed test with Firefox, I get around 1500 to 2000 kbps in normal mode, but if I try to download a file it ransfers at only the 200 to 400 kbsp rate (if I'm lucky). Here's more detail about the system and what I've done so far:

Installed all updates including SP2.
Using Windows Firewall, no anti-virus.
Updated network drivers directly from NVidia (Chipset is nForce750i)
Updated graphics card drivers directly from NVidia
Disabled all LAN protocols except for Client for Microsoft Networks and IPv4
Connected via ethernet cable directly to cable modem, no router.
I've deliberately refrained from loading anything but the basics until I can get this sorted out..........

Does anyone have a solution to my problem?

Windows Mail Does Not Show Message

Why, in Windows Mail newsgroup, 'Microsoft Communities', (at the bottom of the screen/window) does not show the total number of message and the number of unread messages plus "Working Online"? It does show,'Downloading/Refreshing Metedata...' but then when it finishes and refreshes, most (not all) groups, all messages are gone.

Windows Needs Gaming Boot Mode

Jan 1, 2010

Windows needs a basic bootmode for gaming that stops all unnecessary services and processes from loading in the RAM and running in the background. Like in MSCONFIG you select GAME BOOT then restart your machine with networking to play these more sophisticated games like Battlefield series or flight simulators or whatever.

It would be so nice of Microsoft to make an update to Win Vista to allow such a boot from MSCONFIG. ( WITHOUT CHARGING MORE THAN THEY ALREADY DO WHICH IS ALMOST THE SAME PRICE AS A MACHINE ITSELF )

Mail and not a new message with the email address and subject (as Outlook does when I use it in Win XP).

New Message Window Opens Windows Mail

Jul 29, 2009

I had no issues with Windows Mail as my default client and a new message window would open when I clicked mailto links. Earlier today I clicked a mailto for the first time in a week or so, and it tried to open Microsoft Outlook 2003, which is also installed on my machine, but not the default mail handler. Going into the Mozilla Firefox options, I found that for some reason it was defaulting to Outlook. I changed the setting to Windows Mail, but now instead of opening the new message window, it just opens Windows Mail.

Disable The Stealth Mode In Windows Firewall

is there any way to disable the Stealth mode "feature" in the Windows Vista (Seven, Server 2008, Server 2008 R2)? Here {url} the MS says:

"Stealth mode is enabled by default", but nothing about disabling. This behavior is against RFC and dramatically slows down security scanners installed in our network. So, is there any way of using windows firewall and being nice RFC compliant boy?

Windows Mail Won't Download Load Message Server

Mar 23, 2008

Again. Last time this happened, everyone blamed McAfee, so I killed McAfee and installed AVG Free which is good because it is free. But now I have exactly the same symptoms:

a) Won't download load messages from the server, tries, but eventually times out
b) Happens with Windows Mail, Windows Live Mail and Outlook 2007

I've now uninstalled AVGFree re-booted and the mail client(s) still stick at "downloading measage 1 of 65" then timeout after 180 seconds. here do I look next? Webmail is fine.XP and McAfee was rock solid problem free for years - Windows Mail performance is shocking even when working properly? My son bought a new Dell laptop last month with Vista , he has ripped out Vista, installed XPSP2 (he used MY spare licence!) and he works grief free. I've been using Vista for 6 months now - is time to quit and return to XP peace and stability?Oops I'm using an Acer 5630 laptop with 2GB of RAM Vista Home Premium, Intel Core Duo 1.66G CPU. At idle Vista is grabbing just less than1GB of RAM (I've only the standard gadgets running + IM, A/V is uninstalled while I try to get eMail working again. Is it me, but isn't an O/S that needs 2GB to run a basic suite of MS office applications reasonably well, a bit out of hand?
