i am try 2 put things on 2 a usb device but it keeps coming up say this can not copy the disk is write protected remove the write protection is there anyway i can fix this thanks
View 11 RepliesI have an IDE drive housed in an external USB enclosure. When I connect it to my XP Pro (SP2) desktop it is recognised, and I can browse the folders and files. However when I try to copy a large number of files from the drive to a local hard drive on the desktop I get a "resource no longer available" error, and the external drive is no longer visible to the PC. I can then disconnect and reconnect the drive but only get back into the same loop.
View 14 Replies View RelatedMy hard drive recently crashed and I reinstalled windows xp, the copy i brought with the product key turns out to me fake or blacklisted by Microsoft, the problem is i scanned the disc used for installation and it contain more than a few adware programs and viruses. My PC is operating noticeably slower than before the crash, I scanned my RAM with MemTest. There is also a couple adware programs that comes up in processes, only bitdefender blocks it from popping up when using the internet. Also my Primary IDE channel is using PIO Mode instead of DMA, ive heard this can be because of viruses, should I reinstall windows?Could this mean the windows has been modified and what should i do?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI start my computer in normal mode and it starts loading fine.when it gets to the desktop the mouse icon moves but it doesn't allow me to click on anything. No response from the keyboard.Ctrl – Alt-Del doesn't work.I think it gets hung up in the boot ( possibly loading drivers?)I have rebooted several times with the same results. Starting in Safe mode everything works OK. When starting in safe mode it lists various drivers as it progresses; I don't know how many there should be – or if this is any help because safe mode works OK.

I have now an empty D: drive on my slave drive (I used to store my documents there, which I now moved to an external drive). Now I want to move everything from my C: drive to my D: drive. I know how to switch the jumbers so that the slave drive becomes the new master drive. But how do I move the system, files, everything, so that the System boots from current D: Drive (which will become the new C: drive). I do not want to reinstall everything anew, so I am not looking for a clean install, just a move of everything from C: to D:

View 5 Replies View RelatedI built a new computer w/ XP Pro. Its has a ASUS P4C800-E Deluxe MB w/ a 3.2 Mhz cpu. with a raptor hard drive. I set it up by installing the raptor alone, after xp was up and running I put the seagate 40gb in. It was running fine, when I took it out to put it back in the old system it was in it would not even start the check of IDE's. If I removed power from the HD it would say no IDE's found. I have award BIOS v4.51pg and when I hit delete I can't enter setup. (?) The only thing new to the old system is another video card (I put the old one in the new computer) I also removed the cd burner and dvd plyer and put it in the new computer, and a old dvd player was put back in the old computer. No setting were changed. I have tried to put the 40 gb back to the new comp and I get an error message w/ options to continue starting windows, start in safe, safe w/ com prompt, etc.

Based on the fact that this is a newer drive, and on my own experience using the computer, I'm pretty sure the new drive is a lot faster than the original one. I'd like to make the best use of this additional speed, and was thinking about moving Windows and most of my program files to it. The older, 40GB drive could then be used for backup/archives.I've done some initial searches, both here and on MS's knowledge base, but couldn't find instructions for doing what I want to do. I do a Cut/Paste and XP starts to move my folders, showing that it will take say, 1 hour to complete.I come back an hour later and find that after a few files have been moved, the process paused because it ran into some "Read Only" or ".exe" file and it asks me if I really want to move it. This happens almost every time I move a bunch of folders.Is there some way to tell XP when you try to "Cut/Paste" not to keep stopping and asking if you really want to move certain of the files?
View 17 Replies View RelatedI have a Compaq Presario 900 which doesn't have a working CDrom drive.I took my harddrive out and put it in my friends Dell Inspiron B130 and installed Windows xp SP2. Now that all works fine but(there is always a but ....) when I tried to put the harddrive back into my laptop(Presario 900) Windows will not boot, even if I go to safemode first thing. I thought maybe I could install Windows from the USB port but my BIOS doesn't have a BOOT FROM USB option. Also there is no Bios update that will give me that option.I have tried deleting and installing all the drivers for the Presario then trying to boot like that but it still gets stuck.

View 3 Replies View RelatedThis is really a question more than a problem. I'm running a PC with 2 HDs. I am changing the boot drive C: for a larger disk. Now ordinarily I would use a backup program like Ghost or whatever. Now my situation is slightly different in that most of my startup programs are installed on my second HD E:, the C: drive being the boot drive with XP installed.
What my intention is. Is to take out drive E: Then replace that with my new drive. Then I was going to boot in Safe Mode and use the Windows Files & Transfer wizard to copy the C: drive to The new drive. The last thing to do then is swap the C: with the newly installed drive and replace the original E: drive. I hope that all makes sense.
I am unable to copy and paste files on my laptop that has had XP SP2 re-installed. Whewn I try to paste the option is inactive. My laptop is a Toshiba Tecra.
View 11 Replies View RelatedWhen booting from an old Windows 98 bootdisk to install Windows XP (with slipstreamed SP1) I allways got this message: "Setup was unable to copy cdrom.sys".The problem was known at Microsoft (knowledge base) and they even got a solution for it (dude!).In the config.sys on your disk there will be a line somewhat like this: "device= /d:cdrom" simply change the cdrom to something else like : "device=..... /d:DVDRAM" and it will work.

And eventually reinstalled XP, that didn't correct the issue and then I had to get a new product code because I was in the "you have 30 days to activate" loop even though my copy of XP was already activated.So called Microsoft, got new product key and started to install again. This is when I first got the "Unable to copy files" error. I tried 2 different copies of XP but got the same issue, with the same files, with each disk.I've talked to Microsoft for hours, and finally had a guy tell me it was my motherboard (now this is after having swapped out my memory with the manufacturer). I just received my replacement board (M7NCD by Biostar) and I am still getting the same error. The gist is that at the dsound3d.dll, I start to get "unable to copy file" errors. I attempt to retry the copy, which works occasionally, but eventually I get an error (normally a memory error) Microsoft had said that even with those errors, it wasn't my memory but my motherboard that was the issue

I searched high & low at Microsoft Support & all over the internet, but everthing I do to try to fix the problem only brings me to another error message or another function that does not work properly. I don't think I have a virus or any other malicious software because I scanned my computer a day or 2 before this happened & it was clean.
My taskbar/start menu has disappeared, system restore won't work, I am unable to make any chages to my system services, safe mode is working just as bad as regular startup, many programs do not work properly including internet explorer and more. I am almost surprised I am able to post this. I have pretty much given up on trying to restore my necessary service(s) or restore my computer to my last restore point. I decided to burn some files/folders to my disk drive and then re-format my computer. But I have run into another problem. I am unale to cut, copy, paste, drag, drop, move or send files/folders to another location on my computer, including my CD-R drive. I am able to select cut, copy, sent to, etc, but nothing happens after I do.
i have an hp 532w, It came with windows xp home edition on it. recently I used a Dell version of Windows XP Pro and installed it over my hp home edition. I lost my sound and when I look at my device manager i see a little yellow flag by my multi media controller. If I try to Upgrade the driver I get the blue screen of death. I tried to reistall my origanial operating system, from my 8 recovery disks it won't let me. I trie booting from it and it won't let me. It sez I'm missing (windowsroot) system32hal.dll.

Loads of room but it just comes up with 49 minutes left and keeps going. If I look at the properties of the file on the harddisk it's the right size as if it's been copied. The problem is that it never seems to finish and if I cancel the file disappears.

Yesterday while looking at EBAY, the screen went black, and the computer locked up.Thru trials, I ended up reformating the HD and starting from scratch. XP starts the installation and at 37 minutes left to install, everything freezes. I have to restart and XP installation begins again at about 47 minutes left to install, then at 37 minutes left to finish, the system locks again, and again, again, and again, at 37 minutes to finish.

View 6 Replies View Relatedcomputer started to run very poorly: lagging, freezing up, windows end task etc finnaly one day it would not go into desktop. would only give option to start in normal mode or safe mode. so i tried starting in both but would only restart into the same option screen.I decided it was best to format harddrive and reload windows. insert windows disk and proceeded to format partition and reinstall windows. it formats all that way to 90 % and then states cannot format partition further, harddrive problems and to trouble shoot manual. tried quick format and repair but still nothing.tried restarting without reinstall disk. says cant access OS of course!

I tried several times to reformat and reinstall xp, but I have only succeeded in removing the operating system and reformating both the hard drives. I have the OEM xp disk that came with it but I have tried 15 times to install xp and I can't. Is there anything I can do to fix this?

I thought I may have had a repair utility in Add/Remove programs but IE is not EVEN listed in there NOR OE. I am beside myself I never did this before, I have reformatted but never fooled around with IE.
