Thumb Drive With Password - Cannot Log In

May 18, 2006

I came across this yesterday. We have two computers set up for use by the public and they are both set up as user1 and user2. The users accounts don't have passwords to them but the admin account on them do. Only two accounts on each computer - user and admin. Someone tried to access their thumb drive but was denied. Dialogue box said something about needing to be logged in as admininstrator to access thumb drive. Not sure what this is about. I was able to use my computer (admin) and access the thumb drive and print his files but still not sure why accessing a password protected drive would not be possible unless logged in as admin.

Auto Shutdown When Insert A USB Thumb Drive Into A USB Port?

Jul 28, 2005

everytime I insert a USB thumb drive into one of the two USB ports, the computer automatically shuts down.I have tried inserting another USB device into the port, and it works. Therefore I was leaning towards the driver being the problem. In device manager,it says that the device is working properly. The USB thumb drive came with a CD-ROM, but it only has the drivers for Windows 98 on it, as they are not needed for XP.I have since cleaned and re-formatted the computer, taking every back to its orginal state, as it came out of the box.

Won't Recognize CD Drive Or Thumb Drive

When I finally finished creating a new Access Database from scratch on my 1 1/2 yr old Acer machine and went to save it to my thumb drive (G drive on the new machine) to transfer it to my wife's machine, I get the message "G is not accessable, access is denied". I had transferred a preliminary version just the day before to my wife's machine using the thumb drive which still works well in her machine.

USB Thumb Drive Driver..."Data Invalid"

Feb 12, 2005

I just reformated and installed SP2. I've tried two different thumb drives in two different USB ports, and it always tries to install the driver, and then says installation failed, and "Data Invalid". They are two different brands of USB drives too, different sizes, the only thing they have in common is that they are both thumb drives.

I tried putting the Windows CD in and telling to to reinstall and update driver from removable media, and it still doesn't work Still has "Invalid Data"

Moving OS To A New Hard Drive

Oct 10, 2010

I am running Windows XP on my PC. I have two WD hard drives. My C: drive is getting full (on my master drive). I have now an empty D: drive on my slave drive (I used to store my documents there, which I now moved to an external drive). Now I want to move everything from my C: drive to my D: drive. I know how to switch the jumbers so that the slave drive becomes the new master drive. But how do I move the system, files, everything, so that the System boots from current D: Drive (which will become the new C: drive). I do not want to reinstall everything anew, so I am not looking for a clean install, just a move of everything from C: to D:

MOVING Installation To Another Drive

Jun 29, 2008

Let me be clear on this: I want to put in a larger drive than the old one, have Windows completely move itself to the new drive, and leave the old one blank - all without Windows' security hackles raising and saying, hey you changed something so you need to re-activate(I don't want to clone. I've done this and Windows has been a POS about it. I want to MOVE the installation.)Perhaps someone has some secret information that this is in fact possible?

Moving Hard Drive To Last Computer

Jun 15, 2004

I built a new computer w/ XP Pro. Its has a ASUS P4C800-E Deluxe MB w/ a 3.2 Mhz cpu. with a raptor hard drive. I set it up by installing the raptor alone, after xp was up and running I put the seagate 40gb in. It was running fine, when I took it out to put it back in the old system it was in it would not even start the check of IDE's. If I removed power from the HD it would say no IDE's found. I have award BIOS v4.51pg and when I hit delete I can't enter setup. (?) The only thing new to the old system is another video card (I put the old one in the new computer) I also removed the cd burner and dvd plyer and put it in the new computer, and a old dvd player was put back in the old computer. No setting were changed. I have tried to put the 40 gb back to the new comp and I get an error message w/ options to continue starting windows, start in safe, safe w/ com prompt, etc.

Moving To New Hard Drive On Same Computer

Aug 21, 2005

I have a Dell Dimension 8200 with a Pentium 4, 1.8 GHz. A while back, I installed a new ~75GB hard drive as the secondary drive (slave is the term, right?). Based on the fact that this is a newer drive, and on my own experience using the computer, I'm pretty sure the new drive is a lot faster than the original one. I'd like to make the best use of this additional speed, and was thinking about moving Windows and most of my program files to it. The older, 40GB drive could then be used for backup/archives.I've done some initial searches, both here and on MS's knowledge base, but couldn't find instructions for doing what I want to do. Also review www.michaelstevenstech.com, found the Move XP section, but still didn't seem like an exact match.

Moving Folders To New Drive Or Location

Jan 11, 2007

I have 3 hard drives in my pc, and have been trying to move files and folders from one location to another. I do a Cut/Paste and XP starts to move my folders, showing that it will take say, 1 hour to complete.I come back an hour later and find that after a few files have been moved, the process paused because it ran into some "Read Only" or ".exe" file and it asks me if I really want to move it. This happens almost every time I move a bunch of folders. Is there some way to tell XP when you try to "Cut/Paste" not to keep stopping and asking if you really want to move certain of the files?

Moving Hard Drive And Booting Xp On Different Computer

Aug 6, 2009

I have a Compaq Presario 900 which doesn't have a working CDrom drive.I took my harddrive out and put it in my friends Dell Inspiron B130 and installed Windows xp SP2. Now that all works fine but(there is always a but ....) when I tried to put the harddrive back into my laptop(Presario 900) Windows will not boot, even if I go to safemode first thing. I thought maybe I could install Windows from the USB port but my BIOS doesn't have a BOOT FROM USB option. Also there is no Bios update that will give me that option.I have tried deleting and installing all the drivers for the Presario then trying to boot like that but it still gets stuck.

Thumb Nailed Folders Displaying Wrong Images

Jan 29, 2008

Why do my thumbnailed folders (with a folder.jpg inside of them) display random images that I never assigned to them? Is there are way to correct this behavior or is this just an XP glitch? Using Tweak UI I increased the amount of folders for XP to store in memory to 10,000 thinking that may solve the problem, but it hasn't.
It's especially frustrating since I spent many hours organizing my Music folders so that they display the correct cover art.For example, why does my Radiohead folder, which should display an image of the band (which is in the Radiohead folder as "folder.jpg") assign an image of Cindy Lauper, which is in another folder?

Moving Cursor While Typing

Nov 2, 2007

searched previous forums for similar issues, and saw others complaining of moving cursors while typing. The only response I saw to this was maybe the pressure on the touch pad from wrist was causing. Not the case with me.On 10/30/07 I had (i believe) a backdoor trojan creep in. I have since removed and fixed all errors (allegedly) the only lingering glitch is that while typing, (Word, Powerpt, Search bars, etc.) the cursor repositions itself either ahead or behind my typing. This is making my work take twice as long! This happens at either fast or slow typing speeds. It really is frustrating. To be a little more specific, the movement of the cursor is not visible. It happens between flashes. One flash, it is before the next letter; with the next flash of the cursor it is behind by a paragraph (or more or less).

Moving Favorites To New Computer

Mar 8, 2005

My daughter bought a new computer (DELL with WIN XP) She asked me to take the files from her old (hardly working) computer, which had WIN 98, and get them onto the new computer. This didn't prove as easy as it sounded. The floppy drive didn't work on the old one, and no CD burner.I zipped the folders and mailed them to her Yahoo email (which can be openned on my computer and her new one), then openned and unzipped them on MINE and burned them on a cd.This worked good, but the FAVORITES folder couldn't be burned on a cd, it kept saying the file names (urls) were too long and if burned it wouldn't work after. So, I left that unzipped in her email. Today, she unzipped it, and (as I suggested) copied and pasted the folders/url links from the old favorites folder into the new one. This works, they open in the folder (in MY DOCS) but they don't show on the desktop, like START>FAVORITES I think in XP there is a different way of showing this (I haven't looked at it much and have never used anything over 98SE, myself).Anyway, is there a way of getting the favorites (urls and those in folders) into the favorites on the new (XP) computer so they show up like the new ones she is putting in? I looked in google and one place said to export the old FAVORITES folder to a floppy (I couldn't do, it didn't work) and then IMPORT it in the new one.If it has to be imported (and not dragged, or copy/pasted) can't it be imported from the unzipped folder or somewhere else?

Is it too late to save on a floppy (from the unzipped folder on the new computer) and import it, if it has to be done that way? I have been thinking of it like fonts. you can install fonts, but you can also unzip them and drag them into the fonts folder and they seem to go in and work just as well. Can favorites (links) be dragged or copy/pasted into the FAVORITES folder on the new computer and have them show up in FAVORITES on the desktop? Maybe it has to be shut down and restarted first? Maybe I'm missing something. I've never done this before, but putting the old FAVORITES in the new FAVORITES folder seemed like it would work. The original files/folders have been deleted from the old computer. They are in Yahoo mail as a zip file and can be unzipped and are all there. Can they be exported to a floppy from there? Then imported into the Favorites folder, if it has to be done that way?
