USB Thumb Drive Driver..."Data Invalid"
Feb 12, 2005
I just reformated and installed SP2. I've tried two different thumb drives in two different USB ports, and it always tries to install the driver, and then says installation failed, and "Data Invalid". They are two different brands of USB drives too, different sizes, the only thing they have in common is that they are both thumb drives.
I tried putting the Windows CD in and telling to to reinstall and update driver from removable media, and it still doesn't work Still has "Invalid Data"

I recently upgraded my OS to WinXP Pro from WinME, and there is no sound. I right-click My computer, go to properties, hardware, device manager, then there are 2 yellow circles with exclamation points in them under Multimedia Audio Controller (Intel 82801AA ac'91 Audio Controller), and Unknown Device (Microsoft MPU-401 Compatible MIDI Device). I tried to reinstall them, but it says There was a problem installing this hardware: Intel 82801AA AC'97 Audio Controller. An error occured during the installation of the device. The data is invalid.

I have two partitions set up on my usb thumb drive. On the first partition it is a version of Linux (Slax) that I use for emergency boots the fs is Fat16. On the second, I have a standard Fat32 filesystem. But, when I plug in the drive while in windows, only the first partition shows up. I have made both the partitions bootable.

I came across this yesterday. We have two computers set up for use by the public and they are both set up as user1 and user2. The users accounts don't have passwords to them but the admin account on them do. Only two accounts on each computer - user and admin. Someone tried to access their thumb drive but was denied. Dialogue box said something about needing to be logged in as admininstrator to access thumb drive. Not sure what this is about. I was able to use my computer (admin) and access the thumb drive and print his files but still not sure why accessing a password protected drive would not be possible unless logged in as admin.

I was on my gf's computer on the control panel trying to clear unnecessary programs and I thought i was being careful enough... Well i fear i deleted an essential program on the computer and may have ruined it. I removed the Java runtime environment and each of the updates thinking it wasnt necissary. Is this a critical program? The weird thing is as i was removing parts of it it just kept saying computer must restart to complete the removal of the program, and i selected no each time.. all of the sudden the computer turned off and when rebooting it said invalid boot.ini booting from c:windows

This is a fix for if you ever had a "data invalid" problem that nags you while you were installing and swapping out cards with Windows XP. This error appears to be due to a protection problem in the Windows registry and can occur with a variety of drivers (sound cards and SCSI drivers have been reported). To fix this problem, go to Start, Run... and type "regedit" without the quotes to run the Registry Editor. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetENUMPCI and you will see a number of keys of the form "VEN_xxxx", where xxxx are strings like "1102&DEV_0004&SUBSYS_00011103&REV_04". Under each of these folders will be another folder with a long numerical name. Open each folder and look for the "DeviceDesc" which matches the hardware you are trying to install. Right Click on the "VEN_xxxx" for that device and select 'Permissions' and then tick "Allow" for "Full Control". Close Regedit and then continue with the installation of your device. I cannot guarantee it works for everyone,

everytime I insert a USB thumb drive into one of the two USB ports, the computer automatically shuts down.I have tried inserting another USB device into the port, and it works. Therefore I was leaning towards the driver being the problem. In device manager,it says that the device is working properly. The USB thumb drive came with a CD-ROM, but it only has the drivers for Windows 98 on it, as they are not needed for XP.I have since cleaned and re-formatted the computer, taking every back to its orginal state, as it came out of the box.

When I finally finished creating a new Access Database from scratch on my 1 1/2 yr old Acer machine and went to save it to my thumb drive (G drive on the new machine) to transfer it to my wife's machine, I get the message "G is not accessable, access is denied". I had transferred a preliminary version just the day before to my wife's machine using the thumb drive which still works well in her machine.

A little over a year ago I purchased a used IBM Thinkpad laptop from ebay for my wife. It came with Windows 2000 Professional installed and everything worked fine. No CDs or floppies came with the computer. A couple of months later, it was stolen by one of her business associates. It eventually was recovered, but the thief had installed Windows XP along with the OS that was already installed. In trying to remove XP and return the machine to its original state, I somehow managed to eventually not be able to use either OS. As it stands now I have no OS and cannot even access my hard drive. When I boot from a floppy then try to change to C: drive, I get the error message: Invalid media type reading drive c: Abort, Retry, Fail?

I have a laptop with a partitioned HD. All of the data (operating sytem, documents, etc...) are on the small partition, and now I'm out of space. What's the easiest way to:
1. transfer everything on the smaller partition (operating sys included) to the larger partition and boot from there - OR -
2. make an exact copy of the smaller partition, reformat the drive without a partition, and replace the data. I'm running Windows XP Professional.

The other day on boot up I received an "lsass.exe error, invalid parameter" screen. Clicking "OK" just continued the boot up and error message in a loop. This has been a common problem for folks. Although I could not determine (due to the state of the system) if in was a virus or a corrupt file, I was finally able to coerce, after many varied attempts, an overlay install of XP Pro. However, all that was on my hard drive dissapeared (programs, settings, files).
Although, when I went to reinstall some items (Adobe Acrobat, for example) it stated that it was still resident on drive. Further, when I went to do a defrag, it stated that it was not needed (probably because of the small amount of recent installation) but the graph showed 20 gigs of space taken up (my original 18+ gigs and the new install). So, the original installed volume is still on the drive yet I can not see it or access it.

I have recently added a 160Gb Maxtor 6 P160PO drive in an external hi-speed USB housing connected via a 4 port USB-2 card. I have tried copying large amounts of data (13-20Gb) but after a few minutes, I get "The drive is not ready" and it disappears from My Computer. If I disconnect it and re-connect it, it will reappear. The same happended with a 20Gb drive I swapped in, so it seems that it's not the drive. I have tried a different port to no avail.

Why do my thumbnailed folders (with a folder.jpg inside of them) display random images that I never assigned to them? Is there are way to correct this behavior or is this just an XP glitch? Using Tweak UI I increased the amount of folders for XP to store in memory to 10,000 thinking that may solve the problem, but it hasn't.
It's especially frustrating since I spent many hours organizing my Music folders so that they display the correct cover art.For example, why does my Radiohead folder, which should display an image of the band (which is in the Radiohead folder as "folder.jpg") assign an image of Cindy Lauper, which is in another folder?

Tomorrow I will be picking up a corrupt fat32 drive containing video files, an incident happened which would have been recorded on the drive, while trying to review the video the the dedicated software reported fat32 corruption, please re-format !I am going to try and mount the drive as a slave on my system if this fails I intend to run spinrite still no go then fsck (XP still has fsck for fat32 - right ?) If all else fails could you guys recommend any (preferably free) software to retrieve files from a corrupt fat 32 drive I have heard there is software that will scan the drive right down at a byte level and retrieve particular types of files ie jpeg or avi identifying them from their byte structure

I am new to this site and I come here today to ask a question, perhaps someone here will be able to offer a bit of advice.I have a toshiba laptop, running xp pro sp2, 80GB hard drive.Hard drive inoperable due to bad sectors. My hard drive was partitioned into several sections with the C: section containing the os and the D: section containing my data. I could not boot my system so I tried reinstalling os on C: section again, it required a format. I formatted the C: section and then attempted to reinstall os, no luck!Using a third party diagnostic CD I see that my data on the D: partition is still available and intact. The diagnostic disk creates a makeshift os which allows for very limited manipulation of information on hard drive. Since I can not install os onto bad hard drive section C how can I transfer data from the section D: partition to either a new hard drive or to a storage medium?

I am running Windows XP SP2 with a Silicon Image SATARaid card running a 150GB mirrored volume. The fee space indicated by windows explorer indicates I have 19GB but when I add all the directory sizes together it only comes to 90GB. I have checked "Show hidden files and directories" and also ran a virus scan.I remember reading an article about how hackers can use disk on remote hosts and hide the data but have no idea how to check this, also I may be barking up the wrong tree.
