Now the screen is massive (I run at 1920 res) and the mouse is just too slow when in XP. Is there any way I can tweak XP to speed my mouse pointer up even more.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI am attempting to get a Zonet wireless 802.11g PCI Adapter work in my desktop with little success. I have wireless loptop presently working through a Linksys Router. I copied the internet settings to a jump drive and transfer it to the desktop. The desktop wireless icon showed that it made connection but when i tried to go online using IE IT ALWAYS show web page not found. Is there some other setting in internet Option or elsewhere that is suppose to be change or set for the adapter to get on line. Using the ethernet card in the desktop i can access the internet easily. but the wireless.... this is my sad story
View 12 Replies View RelatedWay for me to change the logon option setting to Ctrl-Alt-Del? In W2K there was an easy checkbox setting in users from the control panel. And upgrading to WXP kept that setting. With WinXP preinstalled in a notebook, the logon screen comes up immediately from power up. I would like to require the intermediate step of manually pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del keys before the logon screen appears. I'm willing to reinstall W2K first and then reinstalling WXP as I also want to replace the existing notebook hdd with another larger capacity drive if I cannot find an acceptable answer soon.

Outlook express doesn't allow you to filter newsgroup messages by words in the body of the message, so you often have to grin and bear it.If you don't know what I'm talking about then chances are that you don't need this filter.But people who use Usenet have been complaining for ages that Outlook Express doesn't have this capability.There are spammers who change their name 20 times a day and the normal Outlook Express filters are ineffective against that.Anyway, here's the solution.You have to be comfortable playing around in your Windows registry. First, (outlook express), create a normal newsgroup rule, and tell it to filter outany messages with "XYZ" (or whatever) in the subject line, andremember what you called the filter, because you'll need to know that name later.Be sure to specify the newsgroup you wish to apply this rule to, as this is the only thing you won't be able to change after.
Then go into your registry and find that new filter, which will be inHKCU/identities/<your identity>/software/microsoft/Outlookexpress/5.0/rules/news.Once you're there you'll see a bunch of numbered folders, and if you clickon each of them once you can find the one that has the "Name" value that youassigned to the rule you created.Open up that folder, then open up the Criteria folder that's inside that.Now, inside the Criteria folder will be one or two folders labelled 000 and 001.If there is only one (000),left-click it once.If there are two (000) and (001),select the one with the higher number (001).Double click on the word "type" in the right pane, and change the value datasetting to 9.Restart your computer, and you have just created an outlook filter that youcan use to filter out newsgroup messages that have certain words within the body ofthe message, like "buy now", or whatever.
I have two partitions set up on my usb thumb drive. On the first partition it is a version of Linux (Slax) that I use for emergency boots the fs is Fat16. On the second, I have a standard Fat32 filesystem. But, when I plug in the drive while in windows, only the first partition shows up. I have made both the partitions bootable.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI came across this yesterday. We have two computers set up for use by the public and they are both set up as user1 and user2. The users accounts don't have passwords to them but the admin account on them do. Only two accounts on each computer - user and admin. Someone tried to access their thumb drive but was denied. Dialogue box said something about needing to be logged in as admininstrator to access thumb drive. Not sure what this is about. I was able to use my computer (admin) and access the thumb drive and print his files but still not sure why accessing a password protected drive would not be possible unless logged in as admin.

View 8 Replies View Relatedeverytime I insert a USB thumb drive into one of the two USB ports, the computer automatically shuts down.I have tried inserting another USB device into the port, and it works.Therefore I was leaning towards the driver being the problem. In device manager,it says that the device is working properly.The USB thumb drive came with a CD-ROM, but it only has the drivers for Windows 98 on it, as they are not needed for XP.I have since cleaned and re-formatted the computer, taking every back to its orginal state, as it came out of the box.

Is there are way to correct this behavior or is this just an XP glitch? Using Tweak UI I increased the amount of folders for XP to store in memory to 10,000 thinking that may solve the problem, but it hasn't.
It's especially frustrating since I spent many hours organizing my Music folders so that they display the correct cover art.For example, why does my Radiohead folder, which should display an image of the band (which is in the Radiohead folder as "folder.jpg") assign an image of Cindy Lauper, which is in another folder?
I booted my computer the other day and got this message: THE SYSTEM HAS REACHED THE MAXIMUM SIZE ALLOWED FOR THE SYSTEM PART OF THE REGISTRY. ADDITIONAL STORAGE REQUESTS WILL BE IGNORED. Then when I tried to do anything on my desktop, nothing responded. So I re-booted and there was no error message this time, and everything worked fine. BUT...every other time I start up my computer, I get the same message -- and when I re-boot, then the message is gone and my computer works fine.

I want the basic Windows XP system files and drivers on my "C" drive and then I want to accumulate data files (word processing, spreadsheets, photos, music files, etc.) on the new partition which in this case has been labeled the "G" drive. The difficulty I am having is getting getting the "Documents and Settings" to move over to the "G" drive. So that when I want to load photographs from my camera to the computer it goes for C:Documents and SettingsMy NameMy DocumentsMy Pictures. Instead I would like it to go to G:Documents and SettingsMy NameMy DocumentsMy Pictures. Using Windows Explorer I changed the file name of "My Documents" to 'Windows XP old path My Documents" and then I was going to set up a new path to the "G" drive through Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Computer Managment>Disk Management.
However I noticed that when I clicked on Start in the bottom left hand corner and it puts up that little window that "My Documents" which was listed now had the new title 'Windows XP old path My Documents' which I believe means I haven't gotten to the proper place to change the main configuration for Documents and Settings. Long way of saying how do I change the basic configuration for where Document and Settings are stored to a new location.
I use Windows XP SP2. Recently noticed that when I left-click on any of the icons of the Hard-disk drives and/or Devices with Removable Storage within 'My Computer', the 'Search' Option opens up by default instead of the 'Open' option, like in other folders. Likewise, when I right-click on the said icons, the 'Search' option is topmost & the 'Open' option has been relegated to second position. I would like the Search option to come first. Can't remember whether this was so from before or changed recently.
I have used Norton Partition Magic 8 recently to resize my partitions.
I recently reloaded windows XP and there is no button on the Start Menu to allow me to log out and swap to another user.

I've tried two different thumb drives in two different USB ports, and it always tries to install the driver, and then says installation failed, and "Data Invalid". They are two different brands of USB drives too, different sizes, the only thing they have in common is that they are both thumb drives.
I tried putting the Windows CD in and telling to to reinstall and update driver from removable media, and it still doesn't work Still has "Invalid Data"
I am using a DSL connection with a maximum download speed of upto 2MBPS but i usually recieve it for about 1-1.5MBPS. I have tried using Download Accelerator softwares to increase my speed but wuth those some spam also come into my computer so i am not using it anymore. Is there any way by which i can increase my internet speed by doing some changes in Windows internally. Also while using sharing sites my speed tends to fall to about 45KBPS.

Once you have downloaded and installed it you must update it and customize the scanning properties so that it scans more thorough.Once it’s installed click on the icon on your desktop and open it to the main screen. You will need to be online to update it, so if you are using a 56K connection you must first connect to your ISP. Now click were it says Check for updates now”, this will connect you to Lavasofts servers and update your definitions. This is the same as updating your antivirus definitions.Now that everything is up to date you need to customize your scanning properties to get the best protection.Now that you are at the main screen click the “Scan now” button, this will take you to a screen that says “Select a scan mode:”, select "Customize" and check "Scan within archives" then "Proceed". Then select "Select" and check all of your drives, "Scan volume for ADS" should be checked now. Now just select "Next".Ad-aware should now be scanning ALL of your drives for any know spyware/malware in its database. Once it has finished scanning it will give you list of everything that it found, REMOVE ALL THAT IT FINDS. Place your cursor on the list of items it finds and right click with your mouse and choose “select all” then click “remove selected items”. This will remove all spyware/malware from your pc. If Ad-aware prompts you to scan on your next reboot you should do so, this may happen because some spyware/malware is in use during the scan and could not be removed properly, Ad-aware will then schedule a boot time scan and remove these items on your next reboot.
